Have a question about the jam? Check below for answers to some of the most common questions! If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reply to this thread.

⭐Do I have to follow the “Beyond Expectations” theme exactly?
✍️You’re free to interpret the theme however you’d like, as long as it’s clear how your game goes beyond what players normally expect. Whether it’s through story, gameplay, or design, your entry must incorporate the “Beyond Expectations” theme to be valid.

⭐Can I start working on my game before the jam begins?
✍️You can brainstorm ideas and concepts beforehand, but actual game development should only start on or after March 20, 2025. If you’re using pre-existing assets, make sure you have the proper rights and credit the creators appropriately.

⭐Can I use commercial or free assets from online libraries? / Are we allowed to use original assets from our previous games or do we have to remake everything?
✍️Yes, as long as you have the legal right to use them and credit the creators properly. No generative AI art is allowed for visuals, text, or audio. Any new content you create for the jam must be made during the jam period. The key rule is that the actual game development (maps, events, coding, etc.) must start during the jam period.

⭐Can I use non-commercial assets for the game jam?
✍️Depending on the creator, any form of monetary gain can be considered as commercial. So we recommend refraining from using such assets.

⭐Is there a limit to how many people can join my team?
✍️Nope! You can work solo or with as many collaborators as you like. However, keep in mind that the prize will only be awarded to the account that submits the game, so make sure you and your team discuss how to split any winnings beforehand.

⭐Is there a minimum or maximum playtime requirement?
✍️Your game should offer at least 15 minutes of playable content. There’s no strict maximum, but keep in mind that judges are only required to evaluate up to one hour of gameplay.

⭐Do I have to provide a Windows build specifically? Can I just upload Mac or Web versions?
✍️You must include a Windows-compatible version for judging. You’re welcome to provide additional builds for other platforms (Mac, Linux, Web, etc.), but judges will only guarantee an evaluation of the Windows version.

⭐Will the judges give priority to the windows version if there is a browser version?
✍️The judges will prioritize the Windows version for evaluation, so you don’t need to worry if the browser version isn’t optimized. You’re welcome to include both, but only the Windows version will judged. A downloadable Windows version is required. HTML5 builds are optional but not a substitute.

⭐What is the judging criteria?
✍️Refer to this topic for more information.

⭐Can I submit my game to another ongoing game jam?
✍️
Yes you can!

⭐Still Have Questions?
✍️If you don’t see your question answered here, feel free to reply to this thread, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

Yello! Could I make a game that was mouse only?

Host

Yes that would be fine!

Thank you!

Judges are only required to evaluate 1 hour of gameplay - meaning that they are required to evaluate ONLY up to 1 hour of gameplay, or if the game is longer than an hour, they are required to evaluate that 1 hour but have the discretion to factor in any additional time played?

Host(+2)

To keep things fair, judges will only evaluate the first hour of gameplay, so please ensure your core content is within that timeframe.

Can you submit more than one game? :o

Host(+2)

Contest participants may be involved in up to two submissions. This can mean creating a solo project and collaborating on another team, contributing to two different teams, or even submitting two solo projects. However, if a team uses your resources but you weren’t directly involved in development (similar to a commission), that does not count toward the two-game limit.

Thank you for the reply!

Submitted

Are we allowed to stuff like downloadable content from steam if you aren't certain how to make something but you wish to have it?

Host(+1)

Sorry I am not clear exactly what you're asking but DLC is ok to use!

Submitted

Thank you and would it be alright to change something like how a system works if there's is a particular type of system you would like to use. As I wish to make the battles within my strategy game similar to the fights in a series called Devil Survivor

Host

Yes, it’s okay to modify plugins.

(1 edit)

Can we use an existing framework such as the SRPG Gear MZ from steam?

Host(+1)

Yep that would be fine!

is there a discord for finding team members?

Host(+2)

We recommend joining the official RPG Maker discord here: https://discord.gg/8TZDDgPked

How strict is the theme? I'm trying to think of concepts right now, and I'm wondering if a concept with a part that is the opposite of what most people normally expect would work? Like a commonly held belief that turns out to be the opposite. I don't know if that works as going "beyond" expectations.

Submitted (1 edit)

Edit: Never mind! I figured out a way to make the game fit the prompt without really only doing that!

Submitted (1 edit)

One final thing (Sorry I have a lot of questions):

Are we allowed to make a horror game? I'm thinking of possibly making a psychological horror game, where there's no strong violence but it's still unsettling.

Edit: The game will probably have dark themes, but no graphic violence shown on screen? It might have some violence though.

Host(+1)

The theme is intentionally broad, so flipping a commonly held belief on its head can definitely count. And yes, you are allowed to make a horror game like you described.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)(-1)

I want to make a game for this jam and I plan too. However the theme feels too strict. I don't know what to do that will go beyond the players expectations. Is there other ways will can use the theme?

EDIT: Never mind. One of my friends gave a few suggestions.

Hello! I never participated in a jam before. I could contribute to a game by making original music :) do I just join? do I then join forces with someone? How does it work? Sorry - never done this before :O

Host

You can join the jam now, and if you decide to team up later, you can add collaborators during or after the jam. To do this, the person who uploads the game should go to the game’s edit page, click on “More,” then “Admins,” and add the other team members as contributors.

Submitted

Hi, what about a plugin that we commissioned before the game jam started? Can we use it, or is it considered a pre-existing asset?

Host(+1)

A commissioned plugin is considered a pre-existing asset and is acceptable.

Submitted

Thankyou so much for your answer

Hey there! I think i won`t be able to join the jam for this year, is it going to repeat for 2026 and the incoming years (or months)?

Submitted

Kewne!!! <3

Host

It’s possible, but there are no confirmed plans for a 2026 jam yet.

Hi, first time jammer here! What amount of planning/writing is allowed before the jam starts? Would stuff like dialogue planning or pseudo event coding be acceptable beforehand?

Host

Planning and writing (including dialogue and pseudo event coding) are fine, but actual game development—like implementing events, mapping, or coding—should wait until the jam begins.

Brilliant, thanks for the reply!

Submitted

Hello! Will the jam accept games in development / early access titles? (As long as they're playable of course!)

Host

We will not. Development on contest entries must begin after the jam starts (March 20).

Submitted

Thanks, I will! But what if I don't get it done in time? Can I still submit the game if it's not finished?

Host

Yes, you can still submit an unfinished game. This is a game jam, so it’s totally expected that some entries may be incomplete. Just do your best to make it playable within the time limit.

Submitted

Thank you very much!

Submitted

I have some questions. Can I make a game that references a game I am currently or have developed? I mean, some of the content references other games I am currently developing.

Host

Referencing your other projects is Ok!

Submitted

Sorry I'm from outside the US and just wanted to double-check: Would a monster catching/breeding game be acceptable? (ie: Monster Legends etc)

Host

Yea that would be fine.

Submitted

Thank you!

Submitted

So we can use commissioned plugins created before the jam, then what about commissioned assets like art and sounds?

I have some quite good art assets made for my original worldview, and Ive started creating game demo a while ago. But the demo is far from complete and doesn't fit the theme. Is that ok for me to participate with a new game project made by those ready made assets?

Host

Previously commissioned assets are acceptable.

Submitted

Awesome, thank you!

Submitted

I understand sometimes concept art/sketching out ideas is acceptable in jams so long as it's not used as is for the jam in some past events. What is the stance for this contest?

Host(+1)

Sketching out ideas and creating concept art before the jam starts is fine, as long as the actual assets used in the game are created during the jam period.

Submitted

Perfect thank you! Wanted to double check

(1 edit)

Hello! This is my first time entering a Game Jam, so I have several questions. Sorry if there are a lot.

  1. How does the prize payment work?
  2. I'm from another country. Does that make things difficult?
  3. If I use assets (music, sprites, tiles) that were not made by me, does that affect my rating?
  4. Do I need to make a cover for the game?
If I have any more questions, I'll ask later. Thanks in advance.

Host

1. Prizes are delivered electronically to the email associated with the submitting account. Winners are responsible for any taxes or fees.
2. As long as you meet the age and legal requirements in your country, you’re eligible to participate. Prize eligibility may depend on local laws.
3. No, as long as you have the right to use them and credit the creators properly, it won’t affect your rating.
4. Not required, but recommended to make your game stand out. A cover helps attract players.

(1 edit)

Thanks!

Here are some more questions.

- Can I use plugins and scripts that modify RPG Maker? For example, ABS.

- Does the game need to be easy? That is, not so difficult that the judges don't spend more than an hour to complete it?

- Does it need to be as linear as possible? Have a very strict path to follow so that the game doesn't take more than 1 hour to complete?

If I have any more questions, I'll ask later. Thanks in advance.

Host (2 edits)

Hello!

- Yes you can use them.

- Difficulty is debatable and it will be up to you as a developer to tackle that challenge!

- There are no strict rules in regards to pacing and or the type of game you make!

Submitted (1 edit)

Does that mean I can't write plugins specially for my game? I like to make plugins for formulas which I otherwise would do with script calls. I'm happy to share them as soon as I wrote them, but most if them would be useless for any other project.

Host (3 edits) (+1)

Also for @arthurfalaschi

There is a slight miscommunication and to reclarify, we do allow custom assets to be reused. If you have an old project that has script calls or old custom plugins, you can reuse them! The key rule is that the actual game development (maps, events, coding, etc.) must start during the jam period.

Submitted

i went use anouther game engine (godot engine)

Host

Only official Maker series engines are allowed for this jam, so Godot is not eligible for submissions.

Does this include Game Maker MV?  I noticed it wasn't on your website.

Host

Pixel Game Maker MV is allowed.

(+1)

I just realized I should ask my question here. I have a pre-existing world for a DnD project I am working on and I just want to know if I could use it legally for my entry in this game jam. I don't have a plot written up for the game already but I do have more lore then what some people would start with in this jam. I figured it would be wise to ask permission to use in when the jam starts before I get too attached to the idea. sorry if this is a stupid question I just never tried a game jam before or even made a complete game with any engine I just really like RPG Maker Engines and wanted to join in the jam to see if I can spark something in me. Thanks.

Host

That’s not a stupid question at all! You’re allowed to use your pre-existing world and lore as a foundation for your game. The key rule is that the actual game development (maps, events, coding, etc.) must start during the jam period.

(+3)

Hello! Is maniac's patch allowed for Rpg Maker 2003 games?

Host(+3)

Yes, Maniac’s Patch is allowed for RPG Maker 2003 games.

Perfect, thank you!

Submitted (2 edits)

I was gonna ask this, how dare you (thanks!).

Submitted

Would it be within the spirit of the event to be creative with the definitions of the theme words?

Example that I’m considering: interpreting “beyond” as a noun, like “the beyond” as in the afterlife or similar (as mentioned here), and so the phrase “Beyond Expectations” would be twisted to mean “expectations about the beyond” (and the subversion thereof).

Host

Playing with an alternate definition of "beyond" and twisting the theme in unexpected ways is within the spirit of the event. As long as your game conveys a clear connection to the theme, this kind of subversion is totally acceptable.

Submitted

Sweet, thank you!

(1 edit)

Hello there! I already know that we can use pre-exsisting plugin and art assets. Then what about map and events from previous project?

Like, if I want to reuse an event-only pac-man mini game that I made earlier, do I have to create a new map and redo those events 1 by 1? Or it is OK to copy paste the whole mapfile?

Thanks for the reply!

Host

While pre-existing assets like plugins and art are allowed, the actual game content (maps, events, etc.) must be made during the jam period. If you want to remake your Pac-Man mini-game, you can use your previous work as a reference, but it should be newly implemented for this project.

Hello! Maybe a stupid question, but I didn't understand the rule "The game must be able to load on Windows". Is it possible to make a Web game that will work on a PC without a download file, or will the game be estimated by download file?

Host

Not a stupid question at all! You can make a web game, but you still need to provide a Windows-compatible download for judging. While additional platforms (like web or Mac) are welcome, the judges will only guarantee evaluation of the Windows version of your game.

Thanks!

Host (1 edit)

For the game jam, you can use music from the MV Trinity Resource Pack or other RPG Maker engines as long as you legally own them and your game is made in an official RPG Maker engine. Since RPG Maker Unite is part of the Maker series, you can use music from RPG Maker XP, VX Ace, 2003, MV, and MZ in your Unite project.

However, regarding using RPG Maker assets in other engines (like Unreal Engine), this depends on Gotcha Gotcha Games’ official terms of use. The clause you referenced suggests some assets may be used outside RPG Maker, but it’s best to check with official GGG support for confirmation on Unreal Engine or YouTube animations.

Submitted

Hello! I have a question. Are we allowed to use original assets from our previous games or we have to remake everything?

Deleted 69 days ago
Submitted (1 edit)

The game is public yet the asset isn't. So I guess I need to remake those. Thanks for clarification.

Host

Hi there, there was a mistake. We do allow preexisting commissioned assets. My apologies.

have a question, Are we to only use RPG mechanics?

Host(+1)

No, you’re not limited to RPG mechanics. While the jam focuses on RPG Maker engines, you can create any type of game—RPG, adventure, puzzle, horror, visual novel, or something else. If you’re aiming for a more action-oriented game, Pixel Game Maker MV is also an option.

Do we need to credit default rpg maker assests? If so how would i go about doing that? Planning on a mix of default and fully original assests.

Host

You don’t have to credit default RPG Maker assets, but it’s appreciated if you do. If you’d like to include them in your credits, you can format it like this: “RPG Maker Default Assets provided by Gotcha Gotcha Games."

(+1)

Hello!

I have a game concept for the jam that relies on simulated gambling as main theme of the game.

The ESRB website mentions simulated gambling in TEEN rated games, but I don't see this descriptor on the Wikipedia page linked on jam's Home Page, so I wanted to ask here if it's okay to use that theme.

Host(+2)

Yes, simulated gambling is allowed.

Any limits to what Unity plugins you can use for a Unite game? Just the default build plugins or anything I have license to use (and credit)? Can we modify the RPGMaker Unite app itself if the mods are made during the jam? I suppose a unity plugin for building assets isn't much different than using aseprite or mspaint but wanted to check.

Good luck everybody

Host(+1)

For RPG Maker Unite, you can use any Unity plugins as long as you legally own the license and credit them properly. There are no restrictions beyond ensuring that all modifications comply with RPG Maker Unite’s terms of use.

I see RPG maker Unite available in Unity asset store, how does it integrate with Unity? Can I use Unity to work on systems I'm familiar with and use Unite for things like map editing? Will it still be valid for the game jam? Thanks

Host

As long as RPG Maker Unite is the foundation of your game, you should be able to use Unity materials with it and submit it to the game jam.

Submitted

Hello, I have another question. A few jams ago I modified a publicly available plugin (which is allowed by the plugin maker as long as I don't share the modified version) for my previous games. Since the modified plugin is not publicly available,  do I need to remodify the original plugin for the jam or am I allowed to use the one I have now?

Host (1 edit)

This will depend on the ToS of the creator! If it's MIT or allows modification, you should be able to use it.

Submitted

If I made a free game for this competition where there is the potential to win some money, that counts as commercial use right?

Host

Depending on the creator, any form of monetary gain can be considered as commercial.

Submitted

1. If winning a prize requires commercial license for assets, if I decline the (potential) prize money, can I use assets with only free license? At least according to my logic, it has nothing to do with 'commercial' then.

2. The rules on your front page say that pre-existing assets are acceptable and for 3 weeks you've replied to all questions in the FAQ that 'previously commissioned assets are acceptable', but now I saw that you've written in this thread that you can use previous assets from your games only if you've shared the assets with the community? What's the deal with that?

Host (3 edits)

1. We recommend refrainining from using non-commercial use assets for this game jam. As long as the contest has prize money involved, individual creators can mistake it as using the assets with intent of commercial gain.

2. There was a mistake in communication with the staff and it has been rectified and clarified in the FAQ :)

Can I use non-commercial use assets?

Host

Depending on the creator, any form of monetary gain can be considered as commercial. So we recommend refraining from using such assets.

(1 edit)

It's a very old script from 2012-2014 so idk if the creator is selling them anymore which is the problem.
Here is the script btw:
https://falcaorgss.wordpress.com/2012/12/02/falcao-pearl-abs-liquid-v1/

Yeah, I decided not to use that battle system,  I have another question though. Am I allowed to put my game on pay what you like and not free?(if I have the legal rights to use the assets)

Host

As long as the assets created allows commercial use (e.g. Donations are considered commercial since the developer gets monetary gain) and the judges and participants aren't required to pay, this should be fine.

Thanks, you guys will be able to tell the difference between pay what you like and pay right?
Itch.io makes it looks like you have to pay as the button to not pay is tiny.

Host

We can tell the difference, but to avoid confusion or making your entry less accessible to others, we suggest keeping it fully free during the voting period.

Voting? I thought there were judges?

Submitted (1 edit)

Hi!  I checked the ESRB Teen rating which says that "aggressive depictions of violence with minimal blood" are okay, if I have an accidental death where the scene cuts off right before any blood or anything would happen but the person obviously died (as in via context, not through graphic imagery), is that okay?

Also, I saw someone say psychological horror (without strong violence) with an unsettling atmosphere and dark themes is fine - is a surgery situation where you don't see any of the parts and are just going off of vague text descriptions okay?  Thx in advance!

Host

It would depend on how graphic the text is. An easy way to tell if something is safe if a creator won't get demonetized from Youtube for example.

Submitted

hello there ggg_gamejam

I wanted to ask if we can use the easy rpg player instead of the rtp.exe on rpgmaker2000/2003 games, thank you!

Host(+1)

Hello, it should be OK as easy rpg player is a supplement for RM2k/3.

Submitted

Thank you for the quick reply!

Hi! Is it okay to submit the game I make for this jam into another game jam? The themes will be there for both and they both jams run the same time frame.

Host

Yep, there should be no problems.

Awesome, thank you!

Submitted

Hi there, just wanted to clarify something that somebody else already asked sort of. I was planning on making a game showing off the mechanics of my main WIP for the jam, is it okay to do that so long as I, for example, use my other WIP's common events as a template rather than copy-pasting? Also just in general is it okay to do a game that is sort of a showcase of mechanics for a future game? It has a separate story and characters, it's just based around the same farming system and world.

Host

Yes, that’s fine! As long as you’re not copy-pasting existing event data and are building everything new during the jam.

Submitted

Thank you!

Hello, it’s my first time participating in this sort of event and I just want to ask about the development rule for the game jam. Since the game must be developed within a one-month period, how will that be monitored. Are participants required to create a game page early in the jam to track progress or is it acceptable to create and upload the game only once it’s finished.

Host

We won’t be actively monitoring development progress, so you’re free to create and upload your game only when it’s finished.

Thanks!

Submitted

Hello. Where can we see the games submitted for this jam? I usually see them on the jam's page and was just hoping to see the works of others. its fine if they wont be displayed here until the end. Thank you for any answers

Host(+1)

The submissions are going to be displayed at a later time near the jam's end.

Submitted (2 edits)

Are you allowed to submit one part of a whole game? If it was the first "Chapter" of the game, would that be breaking any rules? Or would a demo for a game be more acceptable?

Host

Your game does not have to be finished for submission. As long as it's 15 minutes minimum, it should be fine.

Is the use of MKXP allowed?

Host

Yes it is. It does not interfere with normal RPG Maker XP operations.

Submitted

Hello, i have few question about the rules

  • I'm not native English, and my English it's a bit rough, i can use chat gpt / or other websites  to help me for the translation?
  • I can use a free plugin for my jam project? I must credit them? Even though they are super simple and do not change the gameplay of the game?

Thanks :)

Host

Yes, it’s totally fine to use ChatGPT or other tools to help with translation. You can also use free plugins in your project; just make sure you have the right to use them and include proper credit.

Submitted (3 edits)

Hello! I have a question:
Will the judges give priority to the windows version if there is a browser version?

I want to add a browser version ON TOP of the windows one, but RPG Maker is hard to optimize for browser (my last browser project sometimes crashed at launch), so I'm worried the experience might get compromised a little.

Host (1 edit) (+1)

The judges will prioritize the Windows version for evaluation, so you don’t need to worry if the browser version isn’t optimized. You’re welcome to include both, but only the Windows version will judged.

Host(+1)

The judges will prioritize the Windows version for evaluation, so you don’t need to worry if the browser version isn’t optimized. You’re welcome to include both, but only the Windows version will judged.

Submitted

If I don't win the prize or have any monetary gain, my game is considered non-commercial, right? If so, can I use assets that only allows non-commercial use?

Host

If your game does not win a prize or generate any revenue, it would be considered non-commercial. In that case, you can use assets that allow non-commercial use only.

Hello! Just to confirm, are mods that overhaul quite a bit of RPG maker (such as yanfly) allowed (assuming that we follow proper ToS rules)?

Host

Yes, mods like Yanfly’s are allowed as long as you follow the terms of use and properly credit them.

Hello! My team is using RPG Maker 2003, and we were wondering if the use of RPG Maker patches such as the Maniac's Patch or DYN RPG is allowed.
We want to use certain features of the patch to simplify eventing. Would that disqualify us from the Jam?

Host(+1)

Yes, both Maniac’s Patch and DYN RPG are allowed, as long as you’re using them with the official Steam version of RPG Maker 2003.

Awesome! Thank you

Submitted (1 edit)

Hello! 2 questions:

- Can I use http://charas-project.net/charas2/index.php for my 2k3 submission?

- Will the judging process be livestreamed or recorded somewhere? I would love to watch along and see all the submissions in one go!
(I have seen game jam submissions be livestreamed in Discord group call, for example)

Thanks!

Host(+1)

Yes, you can use Charas-Project for your RPG Maker 2003 submission.

As for judging, some of the judges do plan on livestreaming entries. We’ll have more details on that soon!

Submitted (2 edits)

Hi! I also wish to ask regarding the ESRB Teen rating: Are swear words okay? Not excessive, but occasional F words here and there, cursing, or any obscene language for aggressive expressions and such? Of course, nothing that's meant to be derogatory or discriminatory to any group of people.

Host

Occasional strong language, including the F-word, is fine under an ESRB Teen rating as long as it’s not excessive.

Submitted

thank youuu!!

Is it okay to make the art with limited colors like the gameboy?

Host

Yes, using a limited color palette like the Game Boy’s style is totally fine!

Submitted

It says a windows compatible version is required...

Does this mean a downloadable windows versions,
or is a HTML5 game that can be played on windows also allowed?

Host(+1)

A downloadable Windows version is required. HTML5 builds are optional but not a substitute.

Submitted

Yeah, I realized too late that it was a stupid question. :p How is anyone going to check if anyone made this game within the jam if they can't access the files. But it is good to know I can upload both, so that is what I will do. Thank you very much, and have a great jam.

Submitted

Another question GGG_Gamejam

When we submit our games, should the text file(credits) and the folder of our of rpgmaker game be included in some sort of zip or compressed file? Do you have any preference on how these should be packaged?

Host(+1)

Yes, please include your game folder and credits text file in a zip file or compressed folder for submission.

Submitted

Thank you, I will keep in mind!

Are we allowed to use prexisting assets that we made ourself such as visuals and music? :0

Host

Yes you can. Please refer to the FAQ post for more details.

Submitted

Just wondering: considering everyone has different tastes in games and would judge things differently, are each of the games going to be played and scored by multiple judges? Or is the score given by one judge going to completely determine the outcome for a singular game?

Host

Please refer to this topic for the judging details.

Submitted

I don't see anything on the post about how many judges are evaluating each game :(

Host(+1)

The specifics of how many judges play each game are something we’re currently discussing internally, but that part of the process won’t be shared publicly. That said, we’re doing our best to ensure judging is as fair and balanced as possible for all entries!

Submitted

awesome, thank you!

Submitted

Another question, just wanted to make sure it's okay if I have someone help test the game before I submit it other than myself. It would only be one person helping with debugging, so I figure that counts as someone on my team, but I just wanted to make sure since we aren't supposed to distribute the game before judging begins.

Host

The only requirement is that actual game development is done within the jam duration. We do not limit distribution and you can send your game to people to debug!

Submitted

Awesome, thank you!

Hi. Or did I miss it or is it not written, as I understand it, the development of the game should be strictly based on the RPG Maker engine

Host (2 edits)

All allowed engines is posted in the jam page with accompanying images! It's on the first paragraph inside rules and guidelines :)

Engine Requirement: You must use Gotcha Gotcha Game's Maker series engine (Official Site, Steam, Epic Store). Games made in other engines are not eligible for this jam. Each mainline Maker engine has a trial version with full features, while RPG Maker Unite's trial is only available for a limited time.

hi

how can see the other submissions

Host(+1)

Submissions are hidden for now to prevent spam, illegitimate entries, or people using the jam to advertise unrelated games or assets. They’ll be visible once the jam ends and the submission period is over!

cool thx

Submitted

Do judges start playing entrees before the end of the period?

I just fixed a quite important (visual) bug, and hope the judges will see the updated version, instead of the bugged one.

Host(+1)

Judges will not start playing entries until after the submission period is over so you still have plenty of time.

Hello! Was just wondering if using ChatGPT with helping create my plugins ok? The biggest use I had of it was creating a template of what I wanted and then going from there. Most of the time though it's for debugging, like if there are undefined errors and whatnot. Thanks!

Host

Using ChatGPT to help with debugging or to create code templates that you then build on yourself is fine. The restriction is mainly aimed at generating final game content (like art, music, or text) that’s directly used in the game without significant user input.

Appreciate the quick reply and clarification! Thank you! :D

I see that in ESRB Teen rating, partial nudity is part of it. So I have a question regarding this: Is it okay to have a character who's supposedly naked in an art, but his private parts are covered/censored/blurred out?

Host(+1)

Yes, that would be acceptable under a Teen rating as long as the nudity is non-sexual and the private areas are censored.

Awesome! Thank youuuu!

Hello,

I have never submited before, do we have to zip the file? Send it as it normally is when hitting Deployment?

Thanks!

Host

Yes, you should zip your deployed game folder (including all necessary files and a credits text file) into a single ZIP file before uploading it to Itch.io. This keeps everything organized and ensures it can be downloaded and played without issues.

Hi, just wanted to check something. I submitted my game early. If I updated version of my game that's up on itch.io to fix some bugs that came up after I submitted the game to the jam, do I need to resubmit? Or do the games get pulled from the current page at the time of judging?

Host

You can update your game files up until the end of the submission period. Whichever files you submitted last will be the ones pulled.

Submitted

Oh yeah, a suggestion: can you ask the judges to write the scores per category when people get their results? Like in the rpg maker forums someone said that in one of these jams they got the points per category, but in some other jam only the total score. I think seeing the results per category would be fun and if the judges are anyway giving them per category, writing them down takes just a moment.

Host(+1)

You'll be able to see how your game was rated in each category on your submission page once judging is complete!

Will there be community voting in addition to judges? Jams without community voting end up being alot less fun cause there's no engagement after submission.

Thanks

Host

Yes submitters and contributors will be allowed to vote. Only the judge vote will determine official prizes.

Submitted

Hello, is this too much for ESRB Teen?

Host

No that would be acceptable.

Submitted

What's the time expectancy for evaluating the submissions and announcing winners?

Host

We'll be evaluating entries for the duration of the voting period and will announce the winners shortly after.

Submitted(+1)

Looking forward to the results! Just being part of this jam already feels like a win. Even if I don’t win, I feel like I gained something inside.

Submitted (1 edit)

This isn't exactly a question related to the jam process itself, but is using the banner art of the jam for YouTube thumbnails allowed? I was thinking of playing some jam games on stream, so I wanted to make sure first.

Host

Yes that would be fine!

Are we allowed to make new devlog posts (not new file uploads) on our project pages now that the deadline has passed, or do we have to leave the project page “frozen” until after the judging period is over? :)

Host(+1)

You're allowed to update your jam page.

Thank you for the swift reply :)

Hi,I have already delivered my game and I have already been notified of a possible fatal error, I wanted to know if it was allowed to make this kind of changes

Leaving aside that the error affects a frequent mechanic in the game (thought among other things on the Game Jam Theme) and that from the tests its execution is arbitrary so the worst kind of error to solve (I don't think I can solve it quickly) sometimes there is almost immediately, others only very rarely (as of now the error happens to me 1 time out of 7)

So I also wanted to understand if this would make the game invalid according to the criteria (I already made sure that it is also possible to finish it)

P.S. English is not my native language, when I can for my projects I get people who know it better than me to supervise me, but this message was made with an automatic translator, so I don't know how clear it can be

Host(+1)

Now that the submission period is over files are locked and no further changes can be made. If your game is still finishable it won’t be disqualified, but judges may stop playing if the error happens early.

I didn't know this, thanks for the quick reply

I'm using someone else's assets in my game. I have them credited in the end credits but do I need to credit them elsewhere? Should I make a dev post or upload a text document?

Host

As long as the credits are clearly shown in your game then that’s fine. You can also add a credit section to your game’s page now that file uploads are locked.

Submitted

Thanks!

Submitted

I put my credit info into a game event, is that mandatory to have an independent credit file? If so, is there any chance I can upload credit info, or posting credit on game page to meet the requirement?

Host

It’s not mandatory to have a separate credit file, but credits should be included somewhere. An in-game event would suffice, but posting it on your game page would also be appreciated.

Submitted

Got it thanks! I'll add the credit info on game page as well.

Hi there! Quick question about publishing rights. Say I decide against selling the game jam version of my game, but I do want to make an expanded, longer version of it, with better graphics and an enhanced story, do I still need to reach out to Gotcha Gotcha first before trying to sell the revised version?

Specifically, is it the game we submitted that is under contract, or the IP of the game itself?

Host

The publishing rights clause only applies to prize winners, and it covers the IP of the submitted game, not just the jam version. If your game doesn’t win a prize, you’re free to do whatever you like!

Submitted

Thank you!!

Submitted

Sorry if this has been addressed, but am I still able to update this project, or do I need to make a new game page to continue its development?
I just want to make sure I wont be DQ'd if I keep updating the game while its being judged now that the deadline is up. I have no issue waiting until judging is over or even making a new game page and keeping this "Game Jam Edition" untouched.

Host

All jam submissions are now locked and can’t be updated until the voting period is over. Once the voting period is over, you'll be able to update your project again. If you’d like to continue development in the meantime, you’re welcome to create a new project page.

Is there a chance to get a list of the twitch streams and what games are played in those twitch streams?

Submitted(+1)

These are the ones I know, however I don't have a list for either, sometimes I think they publish a list for games they'll play in their communities but dunno if all of them, still a bit behind on following everyone 😅.

Benny https://www.twitch.tv/bennymakesgames he's been streaming. If I'm not mistaken he'll eventually publish each game separate on Youtube.

HawkZombie https://www.twitch.tv/hawkzombie also been streaming, you can check his VODs for now.

Liberty https://www.youtube.com/c/7thlittleleopard7 she will not stream the games due to life stuff, however she's uploading each as videos directly to her YouTube.

RedNova https://www.twitch.tv/annoyednova/ also streaming, already started.

Riggy2k3 https://www.twitch.tv/riggy2k3 also streaming and alread started.

Yumemi Caelestis https://www.twitch.tv/yumemivt https://www.youtube.com/@yumemivt honestly Yumemi is the one I know the least of, their Twitch was active past week so they might do a stream soon.

I see some judges mention a “round one”. Is the process going to be divided in rounds? Any details that you can disclose how that works?

Submitted

I don't know exactly details either but from what I've watched and asked them (?), there's two rounds. You'll have the chance to get two judges every round to look at your game.

So, for example, let's suppose Hawk and Benny play my game in round 1, next round another 2 judges will look at it (for sake of example let's say Libby and Yumemi).

Some things I'm not sure is what each round entails, if they all play all games in both rounds, totaling 4 judges looking at your game. Or if some games are left out from round 2, what are the conditions under which games pass or not pass to round 2.

Host(+2)

Thanks for trying to be helpful. However, we’d like to ask that answers to FAQ and judging process questions be left to the official jam team to avoid any confusion. We’ll continue providing updates directly as needed.

Host

Judging is being split into two rounds. Each entry will have at least two judges play it to ensure it gets a fair evaluation. We’re not disclosing details about how the second round will work, but we're trying to keep it as fair as possible while also balancing the large number of entries.
