Hello! I played the game on stream, here's the VOD:
That was a confusing start for me, since I still had to get used on how every piece worked. Though I managed to win on the second attempt.
The game has a pretty good presentation, with a artstyle that matches well with some of the tileset (without considering some RTP pieces there and there), and the drawings have a unique design.
I liked the vibe the game took after the "bad ending", even if I felt like the true ending was very rushed - there were no extra challenge, no climax, just an image and a single textbox. But I can assume it's due to the jam limitation.
I had fun with the game, the strategic side definitely had a lot of possibilities, even if at the end I mostly used pawns since they can attack without getting a counter.
Like the presentation, but like said below, the board graphic is a bit illegible. Gameplay seemed solid, but there was too much info at the very beginning and the very first battle seemed hard for me unless I assumed full defensive position. I like the idea of the story behind the "chess".
I didn't play a ton of this, but I think the basic tactics rpg mechanics work well. I dig the art style (although the actual gameboard was a bit illegible, as other have mentioned). The music didn't work for me, especially with the repetitive nature of it. Intriguing overall, nice work!
If you want additional comments, I put together a 15-minute first impressions video of my time:

This game is definitely not for me, (i am neither good at strategy nor chess) but there were some things I can comment on:
I spoke more during the vid, but overall the main problem for me was conveyance.
so cool. i think you hit the beyond expectations theme super well. as someone who's bad at chess this made me feel a bit better about myself. i'm a big tactics game fan so this is one of my favourite projects of the jam.
Thanks so much!! Glad to see you enjoyed it! I've gotten a ton of feedback of stuff to update so far!
Played this game during playtesting, and played it again now. Again, I really like this game! It's very engaging and fun, and the art direction is awesome. You made something really cool :D
thank you so much for playtesting and leaving your feedback now!! It means so much to know people liked my silly little game! I'm excited to play and rate your entry!
yeah ofc! It's an awesome game and really inspired me to finish my entry >:) Also if u end up playing my game pls read thru the warnings in the description for the bugs T-T
This game have a very good sense of aesthetic feel for its overall design. The chess like black and white look really suit the whole vibe the game was going for.
The gameplay would have benefitted with having a more accessible option for newcomers who aren't good at tactics games. And some enemy placements can be a bit of a challenge. However, overall this game has a lot more potential if it had a bit more meat into its content (story and the lore of the king's reign). There is a chat talk but that doesn't seem to yield substantial change other than an alternate ending. We don't even know why the "object" needed for that ending caused the "ending" in the first place, to put it as non-spoilery as possible.
Hello and thank you so much for the feedback!! I'm actually making some final updates/testing today and tomorrow and was curious about the accessibility option you mentioned? I definitely hear the feedback that the game can be harder for those unused to tactics gameplay, but am a bit torn on how to make things easier. Would a general explanation of how rounds work help?
Thank you so much for your feedback!! I'll be adding a bit more optional story blurbs! (and I do thank you for talking around the spoilers. I'll work to make it clearer why it ends that way).
Editing to say I took your feedback to heart and added an infographic/some additional dialogue!
