It took me WAY too long to realize this wasn't called "Flight of the Electrodude" haha! I was really digging the music and the gameplay is super addicting! I kept wanting to try again to see if I could go smoother! Really fun game!

Would love if you could check mine out too! Or not, no pressure ;) https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/462672?after=20#post-876644

Developer

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the game! And I already checked yours out, buddy - I did a bad fan art for it!

And I absolutely knew that Haha! Whoops! I'm in such a habit of pasting that now it's just second nature! Btw both I and my buddy loved your art <3

Developer

No worries, buddy, I know how it can be! I'm glad y'all love the goofy art I made!

I have to confess something: I have feelings for Electrodude, the most cutest of the electroduds.

I don't know how you managed it, but you made the cutest game I played this jam without putting a smiley face on anything. Just purely through music, sounddesign and your writing.

At first I focused on getting that voltage win, but it proved too difficult for now so I placated myself with the clearly inferior time win. I'll keep this little gem on my computer so that I may beat it one day.

Developer(+1)

You don't know how many times I almost called this game Flight Of The Electrodude, buddy (and how many times I've almost accidentally called it Electrodad...). But thank you very much, my bud, I'm glad to hear you like the audio and my weird, excessive writing style! And I totally believe in you to get that volt victory. If it makes you feel any better, I didn't get my first volt victory until more than halfway between when I made it and the end of the jam. :D

Submitted(+1)

That does make me feel better!

THAT JUIIIIICE.

Developer(+1)

You gotta J U I C E the T H O O M ! Thank you for playing the game, I'm glad you like it's juiciness! :P

Submitted(+2)

This is really fun. I tried going for the 1 volt win even before reading the description just cause I was curious what would happen if it fills up. Haven't managed to do it though. But I might try again tomorrow cause it's really late now.

Developer

Thank you for playing the game, I'm glad you've enjoyed it so far! The 1 volt win is intentionally challenging; I believe in you to do it, though. :D

I keep loosing. But i'm smiling! It's Fun!

Now I have to go to sleep, but I'll keep trying later!!! Music is very nice!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the game! I believe in you! Thank you for the kind words, and I'm happy you like the music!

Submitted(+1)

Very nice game :D! Loved the description, too :P. And of course the great graphics, music, sound effects and feedback :D!

Some points:

  • Awesome level generation! Apart from sometimes very long single platforms, that is.
  • The game could be much more interesting, if touching platforms wasn't just a way to end a little early, but you played with the idea a bit more - maybe you'd die if you didn't switch platforms for three seconds, or if the requierement wasn't 60 seconds but landing on [insert number] different platforms... It would motivate a more risky and interesting gameplay.
  • Isn't very original in it's current state.

Good luck with this game (if you want to continue making it) and with future projects :D!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for the feedback, I really appreciate it, and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed playing! Apologies for the issues with very long single platforms, I didn't quite code the platform generation the way I would've done it ideally. And apologies again for it not being very original - I was aware of this from the start, but couldn't think of another way to manipulate the environment that I could make in the time given. And those are good suggestions for gameplay changes - I'll keep them in mind if I do expand on the game in the future!

Submitted(+2)

This was way better than i expected it to be! The color swaps, audio and screen shakes etc. sold the game feel. The only thing i would wish for is slightly longer coyote time so my slow reaction speed would feel so bad.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed the game! And I'm genuinely really sorry about the lack of coyote time - I actually did try to program that in, but my spaghetti code was so bad that it just refused to work. If people care enough about the game, I'll definitely try to get coyote time working, because the game is very unforgiving on that front right now, and I want it to be more accessible.

Those things happens in game jams. I managed to survive a minute anyway after a few tries.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad to hear you got through it! Thanks for still trying the game. :D

Submitted(+1)

Quite a fun little game, really enjoyed it. Short and sweet.

Developer

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed playing it!

Submitted(+1)

Very attractive platform design. And This is my first time to see the game using gravity feature. I guess you put more attention on the level design. And honestly, you did it. (Pretty like your background.)

Developer

Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked the game's main mechanic and aesthetics!

Submitted(+2)

Fun game! The electrodud thuds are probably the juiciest effects sound/visual effects in a video game I have ever experienced. The idea of a one-button gravity-change game isn't super new, but it was executed to a very high quality level. The dual voltage/time survived system adds a nice challenge without adding pressure.

On the music:

I expected the theme to be a synth version of Flight of The Valkyries when booting up the game. The music was nice, but it was simple and so I kept expecting it to ramp and add more tracks once I got a certain voltage like how the Bit Trip games do it.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed the game! I know the one-button gravity-change game idea isn't new, I was going to go for a different type of one-button environment-change, but couldn't think of something good enough that I could keep small enough to finish. And I definitely get what you mean about the music - I was going to add more tracks (or make the track last a full minute without needing to loop), but I didn't want to risk going quantity over quality. I spend a fair chunk of time trying to make sure music sounds good before I add it to a game I make, and I didn't want to risk rushing the music and it sounding not great.

Not saying these are excuses, as I know I could've done better, but just providing insight into the development of the game. But I'm glad you still found the game fun overall!

Submitted(+2)

The idea was real nice, and it's perfectly executed. Great job, man!
You'll get a perfect score from me, except for the "Adherence to the Theme" critera. In fact, to me, your game represents more the concept of duality than anything. I mean, there are two ways to win, two ways to lose, and two states the electrodud can take. We're far from "only one", aren't we? ^^'

Developer

Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed the game! I totally get what you mean about it leaning towards duality > only one, that was something I realised midway through development. However, I didn't have time to change anything without totally redoing the game (it's built on the finest bits of pasta... spaghetti code...), so I just stuck it out, hoping the "one minute or one volt, not both, only one" aspect would suffice to not be TOTALLY in-adherent to the theme.

Very good game. Fells extremely polished. Sound track is awesome. Sound effects are dope. First game like this that supports multiple paths. Great game overall!!

Developer

Thank you very much! I'm glad you've enjoyed playing the game, and I'm happy you like the audio and the endings!

Submitted(+2)

The best thing about the game is on the game page you wrote a 475 words essay to describe this simple game!

I really loved how the game plays. It is very intuitive and fun! Thank you for making this game!

Developer(+1)

Me writing an inordinate amount of text to explain a simple game is My Thing™, buddy. Used to be more of a writer before I started working towards game development. :D Glad you enjoyed the game, thank you for your kind words!

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely love the design man. I know you've been told this a lot.......but it would be nice for mobile.

The music just fits the the overall game perfectly as well.

Developer

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the music, and who knows? If it proves to be a popular enough thing and I do my market research right, maybe this'll be a game I port to mobile someday... ;^)

Submitted(+1)

I really loved how you just jump into the game and you pretty much know exactly how to play the game. The effects to switch back and forth were really cool and that screenshake was really juicy. I was surprised how well it worked. The later part of the games almost made me feel like it had a rhythm going on with the music, not sure if that was on purpose but it worked well

Developer

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the game! It was a quiet goal of mine to make the game instantly understandable on the first input, so I'm glad that worked well. And I'm happy that you like the visuals! I noticed the gameplay syncing up to the background music as well, though I admit that part was a happy accident. :D

Submitted(+1)

Loved it! Simple mechanics, super nice audio and visuals. Really fun.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! I'm happy to hear you liked it, and I'm glad my audio and visuals have gone down very well!

(+1)

A really simple game, would make an excellent mobile game due to it's simplicity. Design is brilliant, nice array of colors and catchy music. Well done and keep it up.

Developer

Thank you very much! I'm happy to hear you liked it; I would've done a mobile build, too, but it would've been a bad idea, as I haven't done a mobile port of a game before and was trying to keep things small and simple. And glad you liked the music!

Submitted(+1)

Good game and that wonderful sound ...

Developer

Thank you very much! I'm happy you like the game and liked the sound design!

Submitted(+2)

This was just so fun. Really satisfying visuals and sound that responded very well to controls. As an electrical engineer I like the theme, and going back and forth to create more voltage was pretty fun. I found myself screwing up because I kept trying to maximize the voltage instead of just moving forward.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad the visuals and sound have gone down a treat, and I'm happy you like the theme! I know what you mean about screwing up with the voltage, I did that a LOT when I was testing, even when I knew I was needing to test the victory screen. I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

Submitted(+2)

Another game that is perfect for mobile! short, sweet, and simple. Make this infinite, refine the patterns of platforms, and you got a nice timewaster. (I mean that in the best way possible)

Developer

Thanks very much for your feedback! I would've considered making a mobile build for the jam, but I wanted to keep scope as small as possible, since I was doing the code, sound, and art all myself. I would definitely want to improve the patterns of platforms, yeah. Glad that you like it!
