First two levels I thought the game was trivial. Then the game started to make me think a bit. Nice tutorial.

Now when the real puzzles started I just played and played and suddenly there were no more levels and there was no more morning coffee in my cup. Your game made my morning :)

It's a simple and well thought out concept and I adore this game.

Developer(+2)

How lovely to hear! I'm glad you enjoyed the game.

Thanks for playing!

Very enjoyable game! Different board game concept and I like the strategy involved. The artslyte is awesome, and so is the music: it sets the mood for the game. Having different maps is a huge plus, some are easier so we can learn the main mechanics and some harder to test us! The only complaint I have is: explain your mechanics better in-game (because not everyone will read your page).

Other than, I just have to say that I enjoyed it very much! Good job!

Developer(+1)

Indeed, the lack of an in-game tutorial has by far been the most consistent point of complaint among commenters. Definitely a lesson learned -- we will certainly make time to have a tutorial in the next jam!

Thanks for playing!

How you created this much depth with such a simple mechanic is just incredible. I wasn't expecting myself to go and finish all the levels either. Knife fight was especially clever with its unspoken order of elimination too. Bravo.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words! We also got more into it as we began to realize the potential of the concept. I wish we had more time to explore that depth, but you know how it is with jams!

Thanks for playing!

Developer

Yeah I love Knife Fight, A+ level by Nate haha!

This game is SOOO good! No complaints whatsoever! Its based on a very easy mechanic but with it, you could make so much comlex stuff! For 48 hours, this game is masterpiece, no doubt! The music fits perfectly the theme, the sounds effects are amazing, the gameplay is super fun and challenging! All I have to say it more levels plz ^^

Would love if you could check mine out too! Or not, no pressure ;)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the kind words! We're looking into bringing it to mobile, so hopefully you'll see those 'more levels' soon!

Really nice, polished design, it looks finished.

I loooove it. It made me think of which one move and when. Really a presure :D

If I can say Only One thing, I think it's a bit too easy, once you understood how it works. For a little game and it that state, it's perfectly fine, really. But if you would take it out of the jam for exemple, you'll need to find an idea to add challenge with the time.

Thank you for that experience, amazing <3 I've finished it in about 5-10min

Agreed -- the original intention was to make it more of a puzzler, but some unforeseen roadblocks regarding enemy logic meant that it wasn't feasible to make the AI movement consistent enough for a satisfying puzzle experience. We settled on creating more of a zen solitaire-esque experience using the existing movement logic -- the show must go on, after all!

Thanks for playing!

I ABSOLUTELY CRAVE this. This is great. You definately need to make a full version. It's like a puzzle game, but it's against an AI. Very original, very cool

I could get past three or four levels without knowing that the take-over mechanic exists; I first thought that you can only control this one guy. When I read the game page, I realised there is more to this than I thought.

I really liked the chess-medieval-like atmosphere, and one thing I didn't think I would mention is how good the music is. It's one of those tunes that can *so* easily get stuck in your head. I love it.

Three things I would recommend: a quick way to exit a level, an in-game tutorial for the more lazy of us, and MORE LEVELS!!!

Developer

Thank you so much, you're way too kind! Design/audio person here, so I'm especially tickled haha, I had a lot of fun making that track! I was a big fan of Age of Mythology back in the day so I think I was drawing on that subconsciously.

Our Achilles' heel for this jam has been our lack of in-game tutorialization, we've had many people tell us that they only figured out they could possess any piece like halfway through the game XD

Thanks so much for playing!

I love this game. Gameplay is very polished, fine animations and the excellent idea. Well done!

Developer

Thanks so much, we're really glad you like it!

Submitted(+2)

This is really great! It did take me a bit of time to find that you could possess pieces. I also had to skip to a later level to find that snakes move diagonal and the knights vertical and horizontal becuase I just happened to guess right with the first 2 easier levels that teach you this so I didn't take any of that information in. Everything else is pretty much one core idea, executed to  perfection. Best of luck with this game, great job!

Developer

Thanks so much Sean! Yeah, we definitely wish we had time to slip a little tutorialization in there, but you know how jamming is haha.

Submitted(+2)

Oh, I know, Neil haha. Your welcome

Great game. Well polished and thought.

This chess-like game is well executed and as the best puzzles, challenges you with simple concepts and increments the difficulty as you play.

Here's mine if you can spare some time playing it. Many Thanks:

Thanks so much for your compliments, and for playing! Today is a bit hectic for me but I'll give your game a spin if I can find some time :)

Submitted(+2)

This is really, really good. Well polished, very fun. A little loose on the theme perhaps? I started playing it only possessing once per game to see how that would work and it worked quite well, so I guess I made it even more thematic myself, haha. Nice work here, would be a great game to have on mobile!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing! I like your self-imposed hard mode, idk if you could beat all the levels that way haha XD

Our main claim to the "only one" theme is the victory condition - the goal is to capture pieces until there's only one left on the board. Secondarily, you're only using one piece at a time.

We're considering taking this to mobile, nice to hear that you think it's a good idea :)

Submitted(+1)

I think I can confidently say you can't beat every level this way. xD

I'm gonna follow this project in the hopes i'll be playing it on my phone one day!

Submitted(+2)

I like the game! I like these derivatives of chess! Also the UI is pretty mature! Overall a very nice strategy game! Congrats! Rated! :)

I'm not sure how these types of games work, I've never played one like this before, but great job on the art and music, it looks very polished! Very UNIQUE! - Since I don't know how these games are played, I will be rating you on everything else, like how unique it is, one con I should say, is, if you get people like me, who don't understand how these games are played, a tutorial would be great to add, whether it's a text tutorial or an immersive tutorial level, great job though! The game page has a text description of how to play! We ran out of time to add instructions in-game... :(

Thanks for the kind words regardless!

BigFraudBigFraud here coming from One Shot, One Kill

Really cool game! I thought it was super original. The music choice was spot on! I completed every level

I really liked different cards moved in different ways. The later levels really took me for ride. You could easily add all kinds of cool and interesting cards and make some pretty crazy levels.

I really liked being able to flip cards and become them, but sometimes it kinda felt like cheating because I could just flip to a safe card in a pinch and keep doing that until there was an opening I could exploit.

Other than that it was a cool game! Well done!

Developer

Hey, thanks so much for checking out the game! Yes, I'm really looking forward to sitting down and brainstorming a bunch of new ideas for pieces :)

Submitted(+2)

Nice idea! Looks and feels very polished as well.

Developer

Thanks so much for playing, we appreciate it :)

Stellar game, I forgot I was playing a jam game. I'd have an absolute blast playing this on my phone, it's seriously great and it already looks good enough and plays well enough to be a legit purchase. Seriously fantastic. Clicking the outside pieces to solve the Army challenge was a stroke of genius. My only criticism is that I don't know how well it fits the "only one" theme. I know you only control one piece at a time, but that seems not too out of the norm. That said, this is an amazing entry and I hope to see this on the App Store soon! Also, I'd appreciate a button to quit to the menu rather than having to kill yourself.

Developer

Hey, thanks so much for playing, that's some really kind praise! We're thinking of getting this on mobile...

So our main use of the "only one" theme was that the victory condition of the game is for there to be only one piece left on the board!

Submitted(+1)

Ah, duh, that makes more sense. Sorry, it's late in my time zone and I've been playing dozens of these haha. I'd love if you could check out and rate my game as well, I made a puzzle game too! It's not as beautiful and polished as yours, but I hope you have fun playing it regardless :) https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/460707

Developer(+1)

You got it, no worries haha! Gonna play yours tomorrow :)

This is an well executed puzzle game!

Love the "themed" boards. If you would make a mobile longer version of this I would play it on the bus.

Developer(+1)

Awesome, that's what we're thinking of doing! I like the themed boards the most too, those were the ones my jam partner came up with 👍

Submitted (1 edit) (+2)

Best puzzle game I've played so far in this jam. Had an "a-ha" moment when I realized you could possess tiles outside of the board. Would love to see more levels and enemy types at some point!

Developer

Hey J.J. thanks so much for playing! We definitely plan on doing more levels and enemies :) Possessing tiles outside the board is actually a bug haha, but a lot of people have found it to be really fun, luckily XD

Submitted(+2)

This was a nice calming little experience :)

Thanks so much for checking it out!
