I maxxed my carrots at the start. Then I could finally play the game and get my rocket parts! Nice work with the procedural generation, it worked well. A simple idea, very clean and polished. Great work.

Very satisfying little gameplay loop. A bit fiddly to dig squares sometimes, especially ones that are already surrounded by other dug squares. Nice sound effects, the variable pitches really add that extra appeal. Its a shame that crops don't grow while you're not on the same screen. Would have smoothed the whole experience out. Excellent work.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

I was aware of that bug with the surrounded squares, but I said "I'll fix it later" and then ran out of time :(

I originally planed to make them grow offscreen, but I guess it would have made the harvesting mechanic easier than it is, maybe I could have made them grow slower offscreen.

Awesome, well crafted game. I have enjoyed it through the end.

On my first run I went full Stardew Valley and started planting carrots. One thing I was struggling with is controlling selecting tile. Some viusal indicator would be great.

Other than that it's great. Pig button in the menu doesn't have to be there, but it is. And it's nice. I love how you changed sfx pitching from random ( I usually go 80%-120%) to step based, from low to high. I think I might steal that, because that seems just brilliant. Hope you don't mind :)

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

That's a good idea, I'll have to limit the farming to the original chunk, but yeah, it'll be better.

Since I did the buttons/ui from scratch, I just repourposed one for the title, so, why not add a sound? :D

All the music is in C, so every sound effect had to start in C in order for them to sound good, from there it was just a matter of finding the proportions of the intervals relative to root C. Surprisingly it wasn't an easy search, so if you want to use it feel free to use this intervals:

Fun game overall really well polished!

That was a fun little adventure! I felt as though the game was torn in two directions with the farming and adventuring as I got excited when I could plant carrots, but it only lead to more ammunition. Maybe if I could grow a different type of attack like a tomato bomb or something. Good job and thanks for making it!!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

You can also heal yourself with the carrots! But I agree, since the farmers are easy to avoid, the carrots are a bit redundant if you can dodge them all. I'll upload a post jam version with some improvements.

Submitted(+1)

That was way more fun than I had expected. Though, the carrot shooting could be refined a bit; aiming is currently a bit clunky. Also, carrots sometimes spawn on tiles with trees, so you can't pick them up. When I died (game over) I was able to revive him. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but otherwise that is a much appreciated bug.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Yeah, carrot's should collide with trees, I think it happens because the initial speed is too high and the physics system I implemented is to basic.

There's a tiny window you can use to avoid death, it's not a bug, it's a feature!

Incredibly well-polished game! The art looks amazing, and the game feels great!
It does feel like the game is kind of pulling in two different directions, the farming aspect and the fighting farmer aspect are somewhat disjointed. I'd love if it took more planning to get through the farmers, so I had to carefully plant on the correct tiles and really ration out my carrots somehow, but even as it stands the game was an absolute treat to play! Really great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Yes, you're right, I've should have added something to prevent hoarding, but you know, time restritions :)

I'm glad you liked it!

I don't think your mac build works(It doesn't even look like it's runnable on mac). I got a mac on Catalina btw, am able to run all the other mac builds in the jam.

Developer

Sorry about that. It's my first time exporting a monogame to Mac and I had no time to test it. Since it seems that nobody can run it, I'll just delete the file if the rules allow it.

Submitted

You can still reupload a working build(it is allowed). What engine are you using?

Developer

I'm using Monogame. The curring Mac build includes some runtimes so you don't require .Net Core to run it. I can compile one that requires it if you want!

Wow, this game is really polished and felt great to play! It has a really nice retro feel to it, and it’s adorable. Even the start menu has a little pig to control and select, it all adds to the charm of the game. Sound effects were on point, even the rocket flying off at the end was cool. While the level structure on normal and hard remained the same, the placement of the trees which create the sections and paths within the level was different and procedurally generated each time, which is awesome. Accomplishing all this in 48 hours is an amazing feat. I like the concept of farming for carrots to be used as an attack and to self-heal too, but yeah, I would like to see more uses for them.

I know this is due to the game jam time limit, but I guess my only criticism is to have more variety in the mechanics and enemies, because right now, changing the difficulty only means bigger level and more enemies; it doesn’t introduce much depth other than the reduced chicken-time. Great work! Would love to see more of it!

Submitted(+1)

Oh yeah, some bug reports. I found that the fullscreen mode on a 1080p screen will make the game stretched. I also encountered a bug where sometimes when first entering a section, the farmers did not chase me and I can move around freely. It was only until I entered a few other sections that the farmers started chasing me. This was on Hard difficulty. This only happens some of the time, so I’m not sure what could have been the problem.

Developer

Are you playing on Windows? I've not came across that bug myself in 1080p!

Farmers only start chasing you after you attack them or after you change section a second time, just to give new players some time to react.

Submitted

Yeah, I’m on Windows 10 64-bit. Ah, I see, that’s a good way to ease pressure on new players!

Developer

Thanks for playing and for tanking your time to write such an in depth response!

I plan to do a post jam update with all the intended features! Poop bomb, proper farmer pathfinding, farmer drops, and generating a proper maze Spelunky style.

This is great. I love the ammo-gardening and all the little niceties like the good SFX and animations. This has a great level of polish and simple but enjoyable core gameplay - plus the general premise is very sweet. Very nice stuff indeed and one of my favorites thus far :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and for your kind words! I'm glad you liked it.

Cool game, it was very well polished and had a lot of charm. I played on easy mode and beat it, so the carrots probably have more use on the higher difficulties. I like the idea of farming your ammo, that is pretty unique. No real criticisms, just a solid, fun game!

Developer

Thanks for playing. I'm glad you liked it.

This was a very cute, polished little game!  The harvesting mechanics were really fun, though I feel not completely necessary.  Everything felt satisfying and had a lot of charm though!  Great work! :)

Developer

Thanks for playing!

The havesting mechanics were originally going to play a much bigger role, but I ran out of time to implement the rest, I'll try to add them post jam.

I run throw the map and collect the ship parts and haven't harvested any carrots. Funny little game. I had fun playing it. :)

Developer

Thanks for playing!

That's the ultimate challenge (if you don't play on Easy), during playtesting many players were unable to beat it without shooting!

Submitted(+1)

As other said, bu just farming tons of carrots at the beginning you just obliterate those farmers lol. But great idea, everything works great!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, hoarding carrots makes it too easy, I'll try and fix it after the jam ends.

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I spend too much time harvesting carrots. I became the ruler of this realm after  having like 200+ carrots.

After that i just speedran my way trough the game and got the ship ahah.

As an idea maybe you can have raids in the middle of the map to interrupt the pig's farming

Fun stuff man!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

That's actually a great idea! If I end up doing a post jam update that's definitely going to be a new feature.

Developer

Hey! I'm glad you liked it.

Easy mode it's very easy I think you can beat any mode without even farming, it just depends on your skills.

Submitted(+1)

Fun and casual game. I think the main two problems are that carrots are too much trouble for what they are worth (I rather just run away) and farmers can insta hit you if they are too close to the edges.
Overral, well thought and enjoyable. Bonus points for procedural map!

Developer(+1)

Carrots were going to be involved in more mechanics, but I ran out of time.

Do you mean that farmers can insta hit you if they were following you, then you moved to another area and came back trough the same "door"? That's semi intentional, I had no time to build a proper maze so having them waiting for you was a way to encourage the use of other routes.

Thanks for playing!

It's a nice game, well rounded. I just wish you would explain about the carrot being used as projectile, I didn't understand right away why I should plant them. But to be honest it feels like most of the game can be done without this feature, just by going through bushes. In conclusion, I had fun :D

Developer

I had planned to use them also as fuel for the rocket but I ran out of time.
I'm glad you had fun!

Don't quite know what to do to make the Mac version run. Tried running StarPig from shell and it didn't work. Tried chmod +x for it and same again. Tried adding the .app extension with no luck for that one either. Any clues?

Submitted

Maybe it's being blocked because it's from an "unknown dev"? You can check on the security settings or run xttra -c to clean it's attributes and try again.

Submitted

Nah, that's not it. That is the usual story in jam games and of course I know how to go around that.

Developer

I'm so sorry, I didn't have time to test the Mac version, I just exported the game for Mac. It's my first time developing a game in Monogame.

Submitted

No big deal, at least you tried. Actually, it looks like quite a lot of the games are mac playable on this jam. Usually it's way less than half. Surprised that so many are web playable.
