Really cool! That  interactive intro/tutorial at the beginning is super slick. Really impressive.

Really nice game, cool use of te assets, reall nice style.

Super fun little idea! I like how you did something unique with the assets instead of just making another dungeon crawler game. It would be nice if there was some way to push the oil back a little bit, as a way to keep playing for longer. Great job!

Developer

Cheers! It took me a day or so to really be happy with my idea before I started, so I'm glad you liked it. Yeah oil pushback is definitely up there on the list of "wish I dids", but hey that's game jam life for you. Thanks for playing :)

Cool polished little game! I love how you recolored the assets. The music was fitting.

I would love to see some time extension items and a leaderboard at the end.

Developer

Cheers luis! I agree completely, time extension items would be great and would help you get a bigger score by strategising when to collect them. A leaderboard was something I wish I was able to put in, I think it would have encouraged competitiveness in players and made them replay!

Relaxing little game. Enjoyed it very much :)

Developer

I am very glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for playing and commenting!

Nice game, good arcade vibes. Importing imags to TIC-80 is a PRO feature only?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for playing Doom. You can import into TIC-80 with the free version, I'm pretty sure. But from what I saw you have to do the entire spritesheet all at once. I ended up just redrawing the sprites one by one as I needed them.

lol must have took a lot of time.

What I mostly love about this game is that it's so polished unlike mine... you definitely deserve all the ratings and comments!

Thanks! I enjoyed this! Specially it's simplicity as a jam game!

Developer

Thank you for playing and for your kind words. I deliberately picked something really simple so I could finish and polish it up, and even then I still had things I wanted to do that I couldn't!

Your game may not feel as polished to you but I'm still glad you made it and submitted it, and that I got to play it :)

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! It's a simple mechanic but it's a polished jam game. The last couple of seconds are redundant tho, the net is too far to the right so you can't save anything anyway.

Developer

Cheers for playing and commenting dkomnen. I completely agree about the end of the game, it's number 1 on my list of things I would have liked to fix up, I was never happy with how it played out as you just have to sit there waiting for the end.

Love the tiny aesthetics, the music was nice but ended up being a bit annoying.

At first I tried to 'rescue' everything ... until I noticed that the oil killed the animals and not the trash ... so I focussed on the animals - felt bad for them to be killed.

Overall great game!

Developer

Hey Oskar, thanks for playing and commenting! I agree with you about the music, I wish I could have created a longer track. I'm glad you focused on saving the animals!

Submitted(+1)

Really charming. Also, cool effect with the oil spill, both visually and mechanically. I found my self distraught over with every sea creature that I couldn’t save.

Developer

Thanks for playing and commenting! I'm sorry you couldn't save them all, the worst for me is when they're on the hook and you accidentally move them into the oil, devastating.

Submitted(+1)

Nice one! I like the shift from collecting trash to saving animals and how you then need to avoid the trash to not waste time. The colors look really nice on the sprites and make them come to life which is essentially why you feel that you really wan to save these creatures haha

I think a little more variation or something fighting with your hook could add a little more variety to the game if you expand on it afterwards. And also fast forward the timer for the last 5-10s, because there is not enough space to save anything :(

Really enjoyed playing this one, good job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing gypynkt! Yeah I wanted to have a bit of a backstory behind why you were pulling animals out of the ocean. I'm glad you liked the colours!

I would love to add some more variety with the hook, I was thinking of a "boss" or more valuable animals where you have to first pull a net or trash off them first because they are stuck, then you can save them. Also, some powerups that make your hook move a bit faster. I agree with the last few seconds of the game, they are not fun at all and I need to think of a better way to end the session!

Thank you very much for playing and for your feedback.

EDIT: I will give your game a try once I'm back on my home PC and can download and run it

Submitted(+1)

power ups could be a really fun way to add to the gameplay, or upgrades for the hook and boat. I like the 'pull something of an animal first to save it' idea also. A boss fight could be fun, but difficult with the area shrinking. Maybe if it's something that can swim through the death zone and tries to take over your hook or something?

Developer

Yeah I think I'd have to change the game to one where you could push the wave back somehow, so you could increase your time playing. I do like the idea of something disabling your hook temporarily, I'm not sure what I could use as I'd like to keep all the animals peaceful. This thing could have an attack that tangles your hook so you have to avoid, then try and hook it at the right time to beat it. Nice brainstorming!

I loved the aesthetic, especially the music increasing tempo as things got more dire.   The people at BP should have to play this game to clock in for work.  ;)

Developer

Hahah that's great, yeah they have done a lot of damage. Maybe my game will make them realise that oil turns animals instantly into skeletons.

Submitted(+1)

I had a lot of fun playing, thanks for making this game :-)

Developer

Thanks for playing Cathrak! You are very welcome, I hope you had as much fun playing as I did making it.

Submitted(+1)

Short and sweet score attack game. Not much to complain about. Perhaps a way to unhook something if you didn't want it?

Developer

Thank you for playing and for your feedback! This was an option I considered but I deliberately left it out so players would try to avoid items they didn't want to hook.

Submitted(+1)

Woah. It was so solid and had a great twist, loved it.

Developer

Thanks for playing and for your feedback Art! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

Very cute and fun little game! The simple mechanics were very easy to understand, and the hook felt great to move. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing billy! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I haven't forgotten about playing Monster Casino either, I'm just unable to play it until I'm on my home PC tomorrow.

What a great little game!  Fun gameplay, great polish -- I liked the scrolling bubble particles and the 'hooked' particles -- and a beautiful color palette!  Also, may I ask what font you used for the title image (the white "Hooked")?  It's gorgeous!

Great job!

Developer

Hey Fowlest, thanks so much for your feedback! I did try my best to spice up the gameplay and make it satisfying to hook something. I will get back to you regarding the font, I can't remember what I used and I won't have access to my dev PC until tomorrow to check!

Developer

Hey Fowlest, the font is called Righteous Regular and is available here https://www.1001freefonts.com/righteous.font

The great news is, it's public domain!

Oh man thank you so much for this!  You are awesome!!

Nice game! I liked that the motivation changed halfway through. It was a nice story point. Also, I have no idea how you created the main character from the sprite pack ... or maybe you didn't! Either way, you used everything really well, especially to make the sand and water.

I liked your intro UI as well. Everything felt very clean and thoughtful in your design.

I also liked how the music tempo increased as the wall of pollution got closer! Dynamic music is always a cool thing. Maybe you could have set it back to a nice slow tempo on the end screen, though :) Great job!

Developer(+1)

Hey Hawkinberry, thanks so much for playing Hooked! My main character was the little dude with the staff in the section with all the different humans, I think he's meant to be a farmer but I used the staff/pole as a fishing rod. Then I just coloured him up and popped him in a boat!

I'm glad you enjoyed the intro, I wanted to make it very clear how to play and what to do without writing it in the description of the game. Nothing wrong with doing that, but it was a challenge I set for myself.

A slower tempo on the game over screen is a good idea, it does leave the player a bit gee'd up once the game is over by leaving it. A funny bug I had was that the tempo kept increasing on this page and eventually overflowed and reset back to extremely slow (so maybe that would have been good to keep in?) Thanks again for playing, I'll play your game now!

fun little game! nice concept and execution. Music was great and it was pretty relaxing. I enjoyed it a lot!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for your comment, I'm glad you enjoyed playing! I'm also very glad to hear that you enjoyed the music, it was my first attempt at composing it, and I had to do it with the fantasy console's tiny little editor/tracker. Thanks once again, and I've got your game on my list to-play. :)

Funny game, I enjoyed it! :)

Developer

Thanks for playing Pato, I'm glad you enjoyed Hooked!
