Amazing game.

Unique idea and well executed. I think the design of the levels can be improved in a post-jam version, but what's there was enough to prove the concept. It's great!

Great concept!....Allows for fun little puzzles.

Fits the theme very well. Like the art style too :)

Good concept of chosing the right ability, nice job very creative game.

Nice character selection and the skill introduction. My game also have different character skills while did not complete 100%. Your game looks nice in the wall building and the level design. looking forward to play more levels.

A  nice concept, without going overboard with the "only one" theme~
cute visuals too

cool little game

Submitted(+1)

This is very cool! I like how each room has different exits depending on the characters that you chose. I only wish this was long :)

Submitted(+1)

I really enjoyed the artwork in the game and your idea was really cool, but after recruiting the key it felt like I could just walk him over to the side of any level, unlock the door, and leave without any challenge. I also felt like I didn't need any of the other guys I recruited since I never needed to jump over, burn, or freeze anything in order to beat the level. Overall I enjoyed the experience but it wasn't difficult at all. Great job, though!

Developer(+1)

Yeah, we needed to work more on making it so levels weren't just possible with a single rogue, maybe by putting enemies in front of doors or something. Some levels were balanced for this, but  a lot were not.

Chairish Games with comments again. But this time from a different computer and a different member of the team.

Music: awesome but I'm not sure if it fits this game and this art style.

Art style: awesome. no buts. I really like the way the simple funny look helps quickly recognize everything. Especially the thief. I know I said no buts, but maybe... the walls could be made to look more in line with the other parts of the game. I mean they're good fit at this point already. The question is can they be better?

Enemies didn't really present a significant obstacle in this which is ok. They've served their purpose as a minor detriment that makes you both choose your route more carefully and think about timing a bit.

And now for the big stuff: the idea behind making a game with a dungeon party consisted of this simple characters is fresh (at least to me) and I'm a sucker for party RPGs and have been watching Adam Millard's latest video on genre mashing. I think you've mashed puzzle and dungeon crawler party very well.

What I think this game lacks is post jam development with more levels and perhaps bigger levels. You cleverly used tricks to make relatively simple labyrinths into enjoyable entry level puzzles. But I like this concept. And I want more of it. I want levels where it will take more than 10 seconds to see where and how I need to go. I want you to make it so that I have to think do I want my party to be full of different characters, or do I maybe want 2 thieves in it. With so little levels combating enemies wasn't even an option because I got the guard at a later stage and the guard can only hit once so I didn't even think about using him.

In conclusion: more. make it.

EDIT: I chuckled a bit reading your game description because it felt like you were uncertain if your game fit the theme so you had to point out in more than one place that it was ONE color, ONE hit and so on. We had the same problem but just decided to ignore the theme in the end and hope that someone will think we fit it. My point is don't sweat it so much. Who cares if you fit the theme you made a cool well designed game with a bunch of potential

THank you!!!!!!!!!!!! <3
This is very useful critique, thank you very much.

I really loved the mechanics and the fact that each character has its own ability. It was really fun! But  (maybe I'm wrong), the fact that the monster had the key, it made it so that  you HAD to chose certain characters for it to be beatable (or I didn't think enough to find a solution). For example, on the second level, it seemed like youhad to have the fire guy because without it, you can't get past the bushes and then save an attack for the monster. Apart for this little detail, I loved the game and the design was original. I loved the arcade-style design. your characters were well made and I really like the art style. Great job with this game!

Developer

We started out by planning a branching tree system, so we always knew from any one level which possible classes you had, and could make the levels possible with everyone. But then time started to run out, and we had to make all the levels converge on a single final level, which was only possible with a thief, or a combination of combat classes. The thief makes that final room ridiculously easy.

But I think we did a fairly okay job at presenting the potential of this idea if we'd had a bit more time to touch up the levels. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!

I LOVE your art! Super cute, clear and effective! I get BaBa is you vibes from this! This wasn't one of those one and done games for me! The replay was there and progression felt good! You could really polish this out and make a killer full game! I'd love to play it for sure!

Would love if you could check mine out too! Or not, no pressure ;) https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/462672?after=20#post-876644

Really fun game with a lot of replay value! I would love to see this expanded to some sort of Metroidvania where you collected new recruits/powers along the way.

The game got pretty easy once I got 3+ recruits. I'd be interested in seeing how the game would play if there was a limit on how many recruits you had. It could add a nice resource management aspect maybe?

One last thing is that I was a bit sad that I couldn't recruit the enemies.

This is my favorite game this jam and it really got my gears turning. Really inspiring! Great job! I'd throw money at a full version of this.

Thank you xx

I started with the theif and it made the game very easy, maybe the levels need some work to work better with the character sets?  I bet it's really hard to balance the later levels for any set of 3 / 4.

Submitted(+1)

I'd like to try it as it sounds promising but for some reason the space bar doesn't change the character for me =/ gonna try again later on a different computer!

Submitted(+1)

It was a little difficult for me at first to figure out how to change the character. But over time, everything became clear. Interesting  mechanics. I think that the levels are a little simple, but this is enough to try the game.

Good job!

The idea is definitely there! The levels were a bit straightforward, but I can see how it can become a nightmare to design them for that many different character combinations. I also would have liked to pick characters via number keys, cycling through them can get tedious with many of them.

Submitted(+1)

Good game overall.

Drop shadows would've been a good idea. Also that bush maze shown in the screenshots doesn't seem like it needed that convoluted of paths. The actual ways to solve it are simple, so most of the level is just pointlessly wasting the player's time

Lovely idea! I included it in my GMTK Game Jam 2019 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :)

Super cool concept. I played a few times and it certainly is better with certain characters - the key guy for instance kinda just lets you skip most of the levels. With some more refinement, this could be turned into a really, really cool game. Great work with this!

Developer

Rogue is totally broken, but we only had time to either fix that character or the bunny and we picked bunny. Before the fix, the bunny could just jump over the outside wall and walk round to the exit on any level. Really glad you liked it!

This game is fantastic! I was surprised by how much variety you got into this game in just 48 hours! It's impressive how you designed your levels for different characters. And it was just as fun to play the second time trying different levels and recruits. Definitely my favourite so far, 5/5! :)
The perspective graphics are nice, though I found it sometimes made judging how many tiles up/down were between your recruits and other things in the scene.

Developer

Yeah, a few people have had problems with judging the depth. (I have to confess I've even misjudged it a few times)

For some reason I decided all the graphics should be fully 3D and then rendered out to look 2D, which caused SO much extra work. But I think the end result is a cool effect, and I'm glad you liked it!
