I recorded and commented while I played your game. Here's the video for you :)

https://youtu.be/SUSAgqTBWRI (it's still processing at the moment)

My story:

That's it! You are completely lost. One moment you were camping with your friends, the next one a thunderstorm drives you deeper into the woods than you have ever been. When the rain finally stopped you had no idea where you were.
You look around from some clues to find your way out of these woods. Eventually you stumble upon a pathway that you have never been on. You walk along it, any direction seems fine right now.
After a while you reach a crossing. The right path leads down into an even darker part of the forrest, on the left path you can see a small cabin in the distance.
You Go into the woods.
The longer you walk, the darker it seems to get, until you can barely see. You keep on walking until you suddenly suble out into a clearing. In the center of which there is a huge circle of stones, looking like an ancient ritual location.
You can see the path continuing on the other side of the stone circle. Something seems eerie about the huge stones. How did they get here? And how has nobody noticed them before. You certainly never heard about them.
You Go through the circle.
The moment you step into the circle it feels like your are moving through a web of invisible veils. Your vision goes blurry for a second, but then you blink and you can't believe your own eyes. From inside the circle you the stones look like gateways.
There are four gateways, even though the one you just stepped through seems to have closed. Since there is no going back you take a look at the other three. The stones are marked with symbols of the four elements. You came from the earth gateway.
You Go through air gateway.
You step out on the other side of the gateway. Actually you are more falling than stepping, because suddenly you are high up in the air. And you can not believe what you see as you break through a layer of clouds.
You are high above your home town. You can even see the campsite you and your friends went to from here. But before you can enjoy the view you realize that you are getting closer and closer to the ground. You close your eyes and await the inevidable.
It was a calm night when you parents heard the big impact on the roof. It was giant mess. Some huge bird must have crashed right into their home, some local biologists were astonished by the size of the remains, but were unable to identify the species.

Hey, I only just got around to watching your video! You gave some super insightful criticism which I really appreciate. Thank you so much for taking the time to play the game, and even make a video about it!

You're welcome! I'm glad you liked it :)

A very neat idea. I really liked this one.

I enjoyed your game a lot. Too bad it ended that fast ! I also agree on the other comments you had about the choice of your font, you can read the text but the focus needed to read the story kinda takes you out of the immersion. Nice job otherwise !

Love this! Really enjoyed it and it was a nice change of pace from a lot of the other games. My only complaint is the font - I had to focus a bit to read it compared to a clearer one - which slowed me down a bit and I maaaay have skipped a line or two. Sadly I got eaten though :( I hope I was tasty!

Sorry Hans, I tried my best to save you.

I was really engaged with the story and got so immersed that I forgot this was my only shot, I tried to replay it straight after! The writing is great and the visuals really add to the mood. I think this is a really interesting take on the only one concept and makes my version of the story mean something rather than playing through repeatedly and seeing behind the curtain as it were. Great work!

This is really neat, I like that you have one story and that's it, that's your story. It feels special to me. Those damn spiders... Maybe I should have gone to the cabin after all...
Beautiful art in this game. I love the colours you've used. The font was a little hard to read at times but it suits the style and tone of the game that I think the difficulty to read it is worth it. The music goes really well with it too :). Awesome work!

Here's my story for anyone interested ^_^. (I really like that it gives you the option to copy it at the end).

You can see the path continuing on the other side of the stone circle. Something seems eerie about the huge stones. How did they get here? And how has nobody noticed them before. You certainly never heard about them.
You Go around the circle.
You step back into the dark forrest. The ground still feels moist from the rain earlies. And just as you are thinking about how lucky you are that you haven't slipped and fallen yet, you do exactly that. You slide down a slope into utter darkness.
You get scratched and bruised by branches and stones on your way down, until you finally land on a big sticky carpet. As you try to get up you realize that you are really stuck to the carpet. From the darkness you can hear disturbing clicking noises.
You Break free.
You jump up, ripping the carpet. Then you realize that it was no carpet, but the web belonging to the giant spider that is now charging at you with its eight long and hairy legs.
You Run like hell!
You stumble up the slope you came down, the gigantic arachnoid chasing after you. Suddenly you slip once more on the wet ground and everything happens in slow motion as you fall.
You Grab a tree trunk.
You reach for the trunk of a tree, but you barely miss it, fall and hit your head hard on a stone. Everything goes black.
You wake with a major headache, as you are suspended upside-down in mid-air. You are encased in spiderweb and when your eyes finally adjust to the darkness you see them. Crawling all around you are hundreds of enormous spiders.
Before you die in this horrible place you have enough time to think of all the times killed one of them, or had somebody else do the deed for you. This surely is a just ending for you.

I'm curious how much branching story you managed to fit in the 48h. I was eaten by werewolves.

Oh yes please! This is exactly the kind of game I think we need more of. Limiting player experiences, giving them something unique to share.

The only feedback I can give is I wish it were longer, but I understand the constraints of the jam.

A game you can only play once, very innovative! I died pretty early on haha but I like the execution and the idea, really well made :)

The writing is great and the one life mechanic adds to the tension. I got tortured to death.

The writing is superb and the art is gorgeous. My only problem is that I wish I could see more of the story.

Super well written. I included it in my GMTK Game Jam 2019 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :)

I found this one because of Jupiter's video!

I woke up very hungry which is not far from my normal days... lol Text based games tend to be hard for me to stay focus because I want to skip all around the text and only look for snippets of information to know what to do next. lol I think it would be wonderful if  you can add voice acting to it. It might even improve on the atmosphere

Submitted(+1)

Aww, that kinda sad you can only played once. Legit want to know if there is good ending for this game.

Developer

You can always share the game and hear other peoples stories :P

Submitted(+1)

You can only play once, to choose carefully your options :)

That was a nice choose your own adventure type of story and I'm glad I survived at the end. And you have to appreciate the effort to have a fitting music and artworks.

Well Done!

the atmosphere and art was good! the font could be more sharper I feel!

Submitted(+1)

Good spooky atmosphere that really dragged me into story. I like that permadeath makes your choices weight much more. I wish it had more readable font though (i suggest manaspace or yoster island font)

Submitted(+1)

An amazing story, I wish the font was a bit readable

I came back to the campsite safely... or so it seems. It is an amazing game, which will be recommended heavily!

Submitted(+1)

Took my a while to get used to the font. The atmosphere is nice and the writing helps convey the story. I won't share my ending so that i won't ruin any surprises.
