Its hard to me to play poker but dude!!! Game looks awesome! Great work!

Developer

Thank you so much! I was thinking about adding more short & optional tutorial npcs, and some in-game references to hand order after the jam's end. Do you think that would help and make the game more fun?

Submitted(+1)

Level of polish, art, graphic effects, story elements (apart from texts during poker games - that was kinda disturbing in rest of super-polished environment) was simply astonishing and kept me playing even regardless I didn't enjoy poker games, since I don't like poker much (so good I had the dog with me).

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah, I'm planning on removing all of those white text boxes that scroll down the page and replacing each with something more interesting. Kudos for beating the game!

I'm not sure if this game somehow balances the cards in the background logic(I think it should). I feel like I played 30 hands, and maybe had some combination in 3-4 of them. This was an issue with the escalating blinds all the time.
I know against the first spider with mittens I only had a pair of jacks once, every other time I won was because both of us didn't have anything and I just had the high card.

I wish I was able to beat a monster so I could cheat more and experience the game fully. But this is a very nice game, it's very moody and the music adds a lot of atmosphere. The part of the story that I was able to experience is good as well and fits into the game making it an all-round very solid entry into this jam.

Developer(+1)

That’s a shame, I’m sorry that happened. Sometimes chance puts you on losing streaks, which is frustrating when you don’t have any abilities.

One slight gameplay spoiler is that spiders never fold. If you try the game again, try waiting until the last community card is dealt and go all in if your hand is stronger. After beating the gloved spider, chance shouldn’t be as large of an issue anymore.

Thanks for playing.

Outstanding level of polish for a gamejam game! I love poker, especially texas holdem. Being able to cheat really changes the dynamics though!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm thinking about new allies to add with different abilities.

Was it possible to hit 50k by the end there? I paid off the bouncer so I wasn't sure. The game acted like I did  anyway.

Anyways, super impressive! The sheer level of polish was mindblowing. The graphics were sleek (The depth of field added so much and I love the character bouncing and the chips rain), the gameplay smooth, music catchy, and writing charming. I guess it wasn't very difficult, but that didn't bother me much. The only real nitpicks I had were that I would like the option to speed up the turns and that the bet slider wouldn't always reset every round (for example, the opponent would make a bet, and I'd fold, but the slider next hand would still be cranked up like I was preparing to call the bet). Other than that I had pretty much no complaints. Excellent work!

This is a fantastic game. It's got the atmosphere, it's got the juice, it's got the feel, the music is wonderful. Well done!

Submitted(+1)

Was really fun! I was really engaged the whole play through and it was also nice to just walk around with my new dog and spider friend.

Really awesome game! I love turning hold 'em into an RPG, and acquiring party members that give you different ways to cheat is really smart design, I like it a lot.
Also, it's super polished. The movement, the art, it all feels really really awesome.
Great work on this!

My only constructive feedback would be that I would have liked it if the hand played itself out once the enemy was all-in (similar to how it works in the real game), because I ended up doing a /lot/ of spam clicking through the checks during those situations.

First of all, nice intro! I loved the idea of a poker game with special habilities, very original. Also, didn't expect that epic music for a poker match :DD

Submitted(+1)

Really impressive! There's a lot of game here and it's all really nicely put together and well polished. Super great job!

Submitted(+1)

Super polished, great vision for the art direction. The whole thing felt wonderfully sleazy. Well done!

I'm bad at poker, so I can't really give any useful criticism I'm afraid.

Developer

Thank you! Do you think it would help if I added a more in-depth poker tutorial for poker-challenged individuals?

Submitted(+1)

Mm, no, I think your tutorial right now is already plenty thorough. Too much more and it's going to delay getting to the meat of the game too much, especially since there's already an intro sequence before that. Maybe have references to the kinds of hands or what beats what? Highlight potential hands you might have the opportunity to build with the cards you can see. That sorta thing. That might take the fun out of playing poker though, not sure.

Whatever you implement make sure it's integrated in to the gameplay well and not like... a button you click that brings up a popup window with some text and images you'll have to memorize. And maybe have an option to turn that stuff off for people who don't really need it? I'm outside of my area of expertise with this because I'm so unfamiliar with the subject matter.

Great game and a really unique concept! The blurring effect for things far away and the UI design are both really good. The animations are also very full of life. The music was fitting and chill

I think the reason this doesn't have more plays is because the profile icon of the game doesn't reflect all of the hard work you put into it. I suggest improving the icon so more people can enjoy this game!

The textboxes falling down the screen all at once also got a little overwhelming to read, so I suggest rethinking how you display that. It was problem a time constraint thing but if you continue working on the game I would suggest improving the font and design of those textboxes.

Overall really well done! Very polished and a cool gameplay concept.

Developer

Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

I think you're right about the profile icon. Another reason might be the lack of an option to play in browser. I replaced the icon and re-engineered some stuff to make a webgl build possible! I hope more people get a chance to play now. :)

You're right about the textboxes being a little overwhelming. I have ideas for how to address those UX challenges in the next release.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Huge improvement on the thumbanil! Although the title doesn't stay on screen long enough to read it, but some gameplay footage is always a nice draw

Developer

I'll have to make a second attempt, haha...

Such a cool concept. Casino games with a story and a battle mechanic. Looks fantastic too.

Now THAT was total atmosphere. Slaying Gobbies is my hobby, so making that bitch explode was great. Webby SUCKS... Or rather I do, I don't know how to play poker (I think this was poker) but I still managed to best everyone *Webby took some trying* Thank God you get 10k from your pooch if you lose. Really really great vibe, from the music to the atmosphere. THIS was 3D pixel art done right.

Fun game!

didn't get to the end yet, but hard alot of fun regardless.
There is potential with the dog to make him do more things in my opinion
(For example, he could show a quick flash of the rival's cards)

Keep it up!

This is a really great game. I have a lot of fun playing it. The aesthetic and sound design are top notch as well, and the game play is... well, it's poker, what more can you ask for!

There's some small complains I have, like the bet amount doesn't reset so sometimes you'll bet money if you click too fast, and all-in doesn't reveals all the community cards immediately (which I guess is good for the security alert cooldown?). I'll say abilities costs are a bit too high, but other than that, really solid game that I can easily see being expands into a full game.

Developer

Thank you so much! I completely agree about the complaints. I think one solution for all-in not revealing the community cards immediately would be to replace Call/Check with a "Showdown" button when someone has gone all in. If you pay off the pit boss, the ability costs are lowered and security alert cooldown goes twice as fast. This should probably be communicated to the player as soon as you pay.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the game!

Insanely impressive for a jam game, I’d seriously consider buying this if it was endless or was longer at least. Everything felt very well polished. If I was going to nitpick, it took a bit to find all the encounters, especially in the right room before the boss, it was rather unintuitive to have to walk back to the left then down and around to get to the boss. Not a huge thing since its not really the main point of the game but I would’ve preferred WASD over click to move. Also would’ve liked to know what paying the 10k to the pit boss actually did for me before paying him off. Those are all really minor though, game is easily 5/5.

I could not figure out how to play this version of poker but nevertheless it was a stylistic game with a fun gimmick of the dog  and a cool setting, I would like to see  more games added in the future like blackjack.

Speed running seems promising

Not gonna lie, I don't even have the slightest clue how poker works and I just checked 24/7. Nevertheless this game was really fun and gave me an Undertale sort of vibe. I especially love the music the battles just get so much more intense. Overall this game could really use a tutorial of sorts especially for a noob like me. Besides that tough amazing game and well done especially the sound design and the use of the art kit in this game looks amazing.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

That's really high praise! I agree, the game definitely needs a tutorial. I'm working on it right now, and I'll try to add it once the jam is over. Thank you so much for playing the game.

Edit: I added a tutorial right before the deadline!
