Very polished game! I liked the subtle camera shakes and background! Amazing work!

Developer

Thank you, those shakes were actually part of an asset pack called Cartoon FX which incorporated the shake into the explosion effect. It really adds juice to the game.

Really enjoyed the game and watching your youtube devlogs (managed to catch them the day before the deadline), they really helped me to understand what other people were thinking at those moments in time where you're rushed with work and trying to get it completed.

Overall I really enjoyed the game, a more modern take on a classic, wasn't too difficult either which I always found Asteroids to be.

Developer(+1)

Thank you, I had to make it easy to play as otherwise I wouldn't have been able to test it lol! Glad you found the devlogs useful too :-)

Great game! Very polished! I was impressed that the asteroids explode into smaller parts you have to either shoot or avoid.

At first I played it safe but then I blasted through like a lunatic and it was super fun!

Maybe you could add an element to "force" the player to drive faster and make more mistakes?

Something like a timer, perhaps! I dunno...

Anyways, excellent game! Have a nice day!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind comments! So many people preferred it more when they were able to go faster! I think I will tone down the collisions so you can blast through without getting stopped in your tracks by every bump.

Submitted(+1)

That was excellent!

I loved the sound design in this one!

Great little game.

Reminds me of Escape Velocity!

Feels nicely polished and feature complete for a 10-day game! Pretty juicy gameplay, and it was fun to navigate.

Had fun blasting those asteroids & deploying that shield-tech! I didn't immediately register where the waypoint arrow was on first glance, so I died a few times wondering where I was meant to be heading.

It was easier to spot full screen, but it might work better as a separate UI window, so it's more instantly readable.

You put a lot of effort into your devlogs and videos throughout the week and I wish you luck on your next project.

Thanks for sharing!

Developer

Thank you for the detailed feedback! Quite a few people missed the waypoint indicator so I'll definitely need to work on that.

Pretty fun space blaster game, bringing back the classics! Love the big space cheese and would hunt those down to shoot them first.

Couldn't tell I had health, only when I got stuck on an asteroid (my fault, should have moved forward more). But got it back on the next planet so it was good.

Fun shooty pew pew.

Developer(+1)

haha those asteroids really do look like cheese don't they? lol! Glad you enjoyed it and yes definitely needs a "shields low" alert of some kind

Submitted(+1)

Great job! Nice colorful asteroids. Maybe some instructions on the control mechanics? The arrow keys don't all work, but the ASWD did.

Submitted(+1)

Well done for making such a well polished fun game AND video-blogging your experience. I was surprised to see that you had only been leaning game development for a few months.

Developer

Thank you :-) Yeah 3 months in, having a lot of fun so far!

Wow, I really enjoyed this one. I have a soft spot for Asteroids games (as you might guess from my avatar here - my GDTV 2022 game). Loved the HUD and voiceover. In fact I went back after winning to see what the failure state was, the ship's computer voice was spot on and made me feel sorry for crashing the ship :) How did you do the voice stuff?

I see you had 12 planets in your pre-release devlogs, but the final product's 6 planets is perfect. Game was pretty chilled although the asteroid belts were slightly on the dense side. Oh, when I found out the asteroids give points I went very trigger-happy, which was fun.

Onto suggestions:  Perhaps the difficulty could ramp up a bit after each planet? As once you've got through one or two you've probably got the gameplay mechanics locked. And as mentioned I'd like to have flown around like a lunatic a bit more - maybe a higher top speed and fewer asteroids?

I have followed you on YouTube and will check out your blogs as I'm quite interested in how you did certain parts of the game. I did a few blog entries for my GDTV 2021 game, I dunno if anyone read them but I had a bit of fun and potential motivation after re-reading them the other day! Well done on producing a good game while also working, I can empathise! (after a 40h work week and 40h gamedev I was a lil tired)

Developer(+1)

lol I wondered if anyone would notice the little death voice I put in there! Yeah I do agree the asteroids are perhaps a bit too much as its annoying to constantly bump into them as there's too many to blast really. So many people said they wanted to fly around faster, I was really surprised by this!

Submitted(+1)

Flying around fast is super fun! In one of my asteroids games I removed the speed limiter and it was pretty insane - I'd added damage scaling based on collision speed so it gave the player plenty of opportunities to wreck themselves :)

Developer(+1)

haha I should try that! I put the max speed quite low but then the damage is fixed based on the size of the asteroid. Maybe if I added in the velocity as a multiplier... that could be fun lol!

Submitted(+1)

a very good game. I like the graphics, music and sound effects and VFX , great job done in the game .

Have a look to my simple game :).

Submitted(+1)

Wow! You've only been doing gamedev for a few months?! Super impressive! Very cool game with great aesthetics and music and a fun little loop. My only constructive criticism is that the controls were a bit difficult to understand. I wasn't sure exactly how to move forward for quite some time. Super impressive altogether though! Looking forward to seeing more!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! In hindsight, I probably should have put in something with at least the keyboard controls!

Submitted(+1)

Great job submitting a game to the jam! You did a lot with just a week of work! I thought the movement was really satisfying. The only thing I would suggest is moving the life % out of the text box because it gets mixed with the text. maybe put it at top left so its easy for player to know what it is for and where their health is.

Developer

Thank you, can I ask what kind of device you were playing on?

Submitted

Sure, I was on a Windows 11 Laptop

Submitted(+1)

A great project for your first jam—very impressive! It took me a moment to figure out where to go :D But once I understood how the UI worked, navigation felt smooth.

Developer

Thank you! I was hoping the tutorial would be clear enough but a few people have mentioned that they weren't sure so I should probably figure out how to make it more intuitive

Submitted(+1)

Nice take on one of my favourite classics :)

Mechanics, music, aesthetic, story: all top marks.

With a little escalation (alien ships? timer before planet destroyed? etc.) this would be a pro quality challenging game.

Well done!

Developer

Thank you! Yeah some enemies would definitely spice things up a bit!

Submitted(+1)

Wow! This is one of the coolest games I've played in a while. Well implemented physics, clear and achievable goal in the game, cool sounds and voice acting, art style!

Thanks for a nice time spent playing your game!

Developer

Aww thanks for the kind works, I'm glad you enjoyed the game :-)

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the voiceover, and the way you casually slipped "tiny worlds" into there haha.

The mechanics are quite satisfying. The little screen shake and feel of blowing the asteroids up is great!
My only critique would be to include some meaningful progression between planets, like better blasters, maybe a temporary invincibility + speed boost, and perhaps have random asteroids careen around at great speeds the farther you get.

But in any case, very nicely done!

Developer(+1)

haha somebody actually noticed the "tiny worlds" slipped in lol! Yeah I certainly would have liked to do a lot more with it, but it was all I could manage in the time. I'll certainly be developing it more in the coming weeks. Are you going to do anything more will Cell Damage after the jam? I love it, still my fave game from the jam!

Submitted(+1)

Fair enough!

To be honest, we're currently undecided on whether or not we'll continue working on it after the jam. Last year, we submitted a game for this same jam that also got moderate praise ("Extinction Denied" if you're curious), and we thought "oh nice, people seem to like this, maybe we should make a mobile build and pursue it seriously." But after about a day of working on it, we kind of just stopped, lol.

I think it's a similar situation here. If we were to pursue it we'd likely pursue it primarily as a mobile game rather than a PC game, and that comes down to how patient we are and how much we feel it may pay off. It's one thing to make a game that's engaging for 10-20 minutes, but another to make one with more longevity and monetization and all that nonsense.

Nonetheless, very glad you enjoyed it! Good luck with this one! :)

Top marks! When I saw in the settings you could change the dialogue volume, I was intrigued. I was impressed with the voiceover. I'm definitely going to check out your devlogs. Really great art, gameplay and sound design. I was impressed by the credits even being read out loud.

My only complaint was the controls. First, there was no instructions anywhere on what they were. Second, they were painful for my hand. Using WASD hurts be, especially when I have to keep hammering the spacebar with my thumb. I saw the arrow keys allowed me to turn, but since I couldn't accelerate, I had to accelerate with W and shoot with space. I also tried my controller and was able to shoot with it, but not move. Would've loved to be able to use the controller. Still that was my problem and WASD is common in these games so I didn't ding you for it in the rating.

Developer

Thank you so much for the comprehensive feedback. The lack of instructions regarding controls was actually a design choice - I wondered if I could get away with just telling the player they could rotate and accelerate without actually telling them which controls to do it. I was hoping the Unity input system would just kinda handle it but I've had a couple of comments about so obviously not lol.

Submitted(+1)

I haven't used Unity or Unreal in years. I've been using Godot for three or four years now, and I love it so much more. There are so many things that are so much easier to do, like controls. It's not built (yet) for AAA titles, but that's not what I'm working on. It gets better literally every month or so. It's come leaps and bounds since I started using it, and it was good to begin with. My favorite part is the GDScript language. It's built for writing games. It literally is my current favorite language and I've worked professionally in over a dozen in the last 3 decades.

Submitted(+1)

wow, this was really good. the maneuverability was satisfying the shooting was fun, I could have just flown around adn done that for a while without ever carrying out the mission. sound great , great, cool spin on the standard asteroids style game that made it way better for me.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I've been really surprised by the number of people who said they actually just enjoyed flying around, rather than actually shooting the asteroids hehe

Submitted(+1)

Wow, awesome graphics and perfect feel & look!

Submitted(+1)

Had a lot of fun! It could be nice to have something different happen between each of the planets to change things up a bit.

Developer

Thank you for playing! Yeah I had to abandon the concept that I wanted to implement so I added in the planet shielding mechanic in a rush towards the end of the jam!
