The Jam is over, but I just played your game and I should say, you really put a lot of work on the story, character's and dialogs. It's already possible to see a bit of the world and character dynamics that are there and you have laid a great foundation for an interesting RPG story.

I also like that the protagonist, or at least the player character, is an older guy. Usually JRPGs have young protagonists or cast in general, so it's a breath of fresh air to be in control of someone who's already seen his fair share of life and may dive into some different aspects of it.

I ran into a bug with how you transition from one scene to another, where I started a dialog event with a character and at the same time was taken to another scene and it soft-locked the game. That's the only thing I feel could be majorly improved on.

All-in-all, great story focused entry, especially amazing with you doing it alone and, apparently, coding every bit by yourself.

Thank you so much for your feedback! This is a setting I've been kicking around in my head for a few years now and I thought it would be fun to try to make a little game in that setting for the jam. I had never done a town scene before, and ended up fussing on so many collision and layer details on the town map I didn't end up implementing most of what I wanted to (like the entire action scene I had planned for the wagon duty second half). I Also ended up spending a lot of time developing the systems for both the town scene, as well as the entire action scene which didn't come to fruition, and as a result I ended up kind of teaching myself Ink and writing most of the dialogue during an all-nighter right before the jam ended.

I'm really happy with the response to the story, characters, setting, and dialogue, considering how much of that dialogue was written last-minute no-sleep. Getting #19 in Story despite my inability to manage my dev time and fully execute my ideas has inspired me, and I'm really thankful for that response. I agree that JRPG-style games suffer from a lack of older protagonists! It's not like we humans get (completely) uninteresting after hitting 25! Anyhow, I plan on continuing on and expanding this setting with these characters, and hope people look forward to it!

Loved the Game. This game gave me some ideas on an rpg im planning on implemeting. Great work

Love the subtle humor and jokes thrown in some of the dialog. Always love me a good lorem ipsum joke LOL! Nice start to a cozy RPG adventure! Well done!

Submitted(+1)

Cool intro with a classic JRPG vibe, the dialogues with the different NPC are nice.

Submitted(+1)

Thank you for the game!  Some of the transitions between areas were a little weird with sprite placement, but otherwise looks like a good start.  Maybe onto a battle on another day.

Developer(+1)

Thanks Airy! I'll definitely get some battling in post-jam, and maybe a couple guinea pig NPCs too.

Submitted(+1)

That would be awesome!

Dialogue and characters were great! I especially laughed at the business man who was enjoying the fruits of the cultists' labor XD It was relaxing walking around the world which is what I like about this style of game!

Developer(+1)

Aaww thanks man! It was my first town scene and I wanted it to have a Linda Cube-like feel to the NPCs, where the dialogue is both fun and world-building (and occasionally inappropriate or very silly), and where NPCs are worth talking to just for the sake of talking to. That's what I hope to accomplish with my town scenes moving forward.

to be honest i don't like that kind of games myself, but i saw the hard work behind it and the music/art dialge system was very good, Well Done! Great Game!.

Developer

Thanks I appreciate it! I would have had a bullet hell action scene but alas, overscoped and undertimed. Cheers!

Nice work so far. You've built a strong foundation here with some great worldbuilding and characters. I did run into a few issues with collision and controls but nothing that stopped me playing. Looking forward to seeing how this develops further, Jams can be very hectic.

Developer

Thanks man I appreciate the feedback! I did upload a version with fixed collision and controls for download but unfortunately I can't seem to get Unity to believe me when I say I want an updated WebGL version that actually loads.

Promising start and a game with lots of potential. Good job so far!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I ended up overscoping but I'm glad I finished what I was able to. Looking forward to coming back and continuing work after the jam is over for sure.

Great intro segment to a far bigger scoped game, assuming you'll be continuing to build it after the jam. Well done.

Developer

Thanks! It was supposed to be a much bigger game for the jam with at least one bullet hell action scene, but I ended up overscoping. Definitely coming back after the jam.

Submitted(+1)

You're off the a great start with your characters and worldbuilding. And there's a good amount of dialogue for a game jam. Keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks I appreciate it! I will definitely continue it after the jam where I can overscope without a time limit.

The world, the story, the dialogue: I’m impressed with how much content the game had. It had me hooked. Very well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm planning on continuing to flesh out this world and story, and it makes me so happy to hear people say they're interested in it. I'm really looking forward to continuing to work on this project after the jam ends.

"We are not forest cultists, you piece of sh-"
The funniest line and I almost missed it.

Really cool to see the beginnings of a JRPG. I think the setup is quite intriguing, and it leaves me curious about the world and how it works. I also think protecting a wagon is a great way to kick things off! Gives an excuse for action while carving out a clear-cut goal.

There are some things I'd probably reconsider - the letter "J" in the font you used looks a lot like a 1, or even an I, so it took me  a bit to proceed from the main menu (I'd just make multiple keys work, or at least Enter).
Doors in the middle of an interior space look...a bit odd. And the collision seemed a bit hazy.

But beyond that, you had me wanting to see what happened next! Well done.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I added a bit of a description for the major players and the world's setting, as well as a controls, in the game description. You're absolutely right about the letter J, as well as the collision. I'm planning on addressing those issues very soon. I appreciate the feedback and constructive criticism! It's really motivating me and I hope to continue to work on this project after the jam ends.

Nice little world.  I'd definitely like to see more of it.  I ran into two issues, one was getting caught in a stair loop in the two-story house.  I kept pressing up a little too long and looping between the two levels.  The other was game breaking.  In the first house, the npc pushed me out of the house as I started a conversation with her - all controls became unresponsive - had to restart.  I hope you keep expanding this - it is a great start!

Developer

Oh no! Frygga is just too powerful! I need to rein her in for sure. Thanks for the feedback! I'm really happy people seem to be enjoying the characters and the setting. Also thank you for the bug report, I'll check that out and see if I can get a fix going soon.

Hi! This Frygga lady sure has some attitude, hehe! Loved the level design and the interesting, in-depth world-building. The game has such authentic retro vibes - it's wonderful!

Developer(+1)

Hi! Yeah, she comes across as rude and demanding, but her intentions are rooted in good and logic, I swear! Thank you for the positive feedback! I've added some basic setting and character descriptions to the game page, which hopefully gives her actions a little more meaning. I'm hoping to continue working on this game and others in this setting after the jam ends, so hopefully there will be much more Frygga to come.

Submitted(+1)

Looking forward to it!

A good start to the story, and the exterior level design works quite well.

Excellent work.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind words! I'm really looking forward to continuing this once the jam is over.

Submitted(+1)

What a nice, tiny world you have! Love the characters and the beginnings of a story, I hope you continue to work on this in the future!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! I had a lot of fun with this even though I failed to budget my time properly. I will definitely be adding to it in the future!

Very cool game—and quite big for a jam project, with so many characters and dialogues! During testing, I got stuck once and couldn’t move anymore, but overall it was a great experience.

Developer

Thank you for the kind words and thanks for the heads-up! Those weird plants are unpredictable, it would seem. Must be how they get their nutrients!

Submitted(+1)

Nice work - loved the music and sound. Controls took a bit of getting used to but I got the hang of it. Great submission!

Developer

Thank you! I definitely think I need to give more options on the controls. I appreciate the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Cool visuals and characters, lots of dialogue and world building. Good job on level design. I had some issues with doors and clipping through walls but it is a game jam.

(Definitely did not know it is J to select and not E or Space or Enter) Haha, my bad.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the kind words! I definitely need to update the controls in future builds, and make the controls more apparent. I appreciate the feedback.
