1. I'm Drew! I'm a sophomore in high school. I'm rather busy but really enjoy playing games, and have always wanted to make some fun, simple games.

2. Nope! I was probably ultra busy back then, and I wasn't really heavily involved with gaming back then. Right now I feel more in control of my life and want something productive to spend my free time on. This seems like a good way to organize myself, etc.

3. Generally casual or lifestyle games catch my fancy. I enjoyed a lot of the concept behind Dandelion by Cheritz. I really like designing Sims! There's also various RPG Maker games that I really love, such as Homework salesman. In terms of popular games, my main favorite right now is definitely Undertale. I can't particularly pinpoint a game that has made me want to make my own, though. ;;

4. Not much! In the past I've mucked around with free versions of RPG Maker, but I haven't done anything close to game development before. I do have a ton of experience with programming, though not for games.

5. Ah I'm passionate about a lot of things! Related to this in particular, I'm really passionate about animal rights and programming in general. I really love cute things? I don't know. Unrelated, I love reading books and drawing. ??? I'm not really good at stating my likes, actually.

Hey everyone. I'm Elaine, a graduated art college in Spring 2016 as a concept artist. I've had some work in the industry, spread out on indie game pitches, a VR experience and animation. Here's my portfolio.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I did! It was an idea I had, which I named "Home". I think the uploader in the previous jam called it "fox game". My portfolio actually has some of the art I did for it. But hmm, I think I learned not to take on too much for a short jam. Also communication is very very important to finishing tasks in the first place. I would really love to join a team that's interested in meeting friends, not to just finish a jam.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

Journey, Shadow of the Colossus, Inside, Monument Valley, to name some off the top of my head. Really love the vibe of games without dialogue but what matters most to me is a self-reflective end of some sorts, even if it's a vague one. I want to give players, who wouldn't even call themselves gamers, a place of meaning to explore. I'm not that crazy about competitive gameplay, I think I'm more of one to offer playable illustrations.
I'm also just interested in game dev in general but I prefer learning with someone. Tutorials aren't that fun for me. Would love to collab to learn and trade secrets of trades :D

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I've had some experience with the previous jam in Unity, but just the bare basics.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Other than drawing, I love taking care of plants. I find it inspiring to watch them grow. :) Talking about philosophy is nice. I also love Naruto. *cough*

6. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

I wouldn't say I'm a veteran but advice I would give is:
1) communication is the foundation of teamwork
2) trust your team
3) be enthusiastic and supportive!

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I participated in the last jam by trying to finish a dating simulator and also being a part of the truly wonderful game '22 Cat' and it was amazing. What I've learned from the last jam and the jam before that is that I need to SCALE BACK!! A LOT!! I tried to do an entire game on my own AND also work on another game as part of a team and you know what? It was a freaking mistake. You live and learn, babes.

3. What games are your favourites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I love a big bunch of different games, probably too many tbh but I'll keep this brief. Currently playing the heck out of Stardew Valley. Games that will forever be in my heart include the Ace Attorney series, Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, the Zero Escape series, and other stuff. I love picking up engaging games with interesting stories and/or themes. Quite frankly, I am a VN ho and it's the many memorable VNs and text-heavy story-rich adventure games I've played that first inspired me to try making a game, including my "baby's first game" Cloud Mage from the first MFGJ that ran in January of 2016.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

Aside from previous game jam games that were done in Ren'py, I've done freelance illustration work for Battle Chef Brigade as an ingredient and item artist. I've had the pleasure of playing a recent demo that showed my assets in action and I've fallen in love with seeing things I've made come alive in the video game medium. Which is why I'm here WINK ;)

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I'm passionate about cute shit and screaming incoherently into pillows.

6. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

Anyway my advice is, make your project small. Decide on a scope that's manageable and then don't make it any bigger. Resist the urge. Shelve all your fancy new ideas that would add work to it. Trust me. Don't fucking do it, just keep it manageable. See the finish line? Sprint across it and hold your reasonably-scoped and finished project/demo over your head, you beautiful creature, you.

Hi! My name is Kim, but I mostly go by Destry online. I went to school for Illustration and some Animation, but I've been stagnating a lot in the couple of years since I graduated, so I'm trying to get back into making things! I'm most passionate about making games, but I have little experience so far.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?]

I did! The game that I made for the last game (Xylia's Curse) ended up being very rough and kind of incomplete, so I want to try making something even simpler and with a clear, small scope. I'm hoping to do something mostly text based this time, to save on time. Maybe a kind of interactive short story with a few illustrations?

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I like all kinds of games! But lately, I have been very inspired by games that try to take atypical approaches. (Especially the more recent trends towards non-violent games or games where you interact with the world in unique ways.)

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

Very little, mostly in GameMaker. I've played around with making a couple little games, but nothing yet that I think of as a real complete project. For this jam though, I'm going to try using Unity for the first time! I've been taking some intro courses on it recently, and haven't gotten far into them yet, which is why I want to aim for something simple and text-based.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Art! Also, animals/plants are very important to me!

1) Hey! I'm Yobob....Kinda want to use this name lol I'm a composer and a story writer....and also a physics major. Why am I making games...Backup plan LOL

2)I didn't participate in the jam but i want to join since this looks interesting.

3)I love the FF series! They inspired me to make music and as i made more music and started to love writing stories and then video games.

4)I do have a little game development experience and i worked with some people but it's been a fail since one of the artist had a major ego problem which made it very hard to communicate with him. We didn't talk about ourselves which i felt no connection with the artist. My other artist that I had (Which was stupid of me to do) is that i dropped that artist for the ego artist. UGHUGHGUHGUHG The ego artist knew what he was doing and i thought i could learn from him...I did a little bit. Market, market, market.

5) I LOVE music. Especially classical music. Or video game music. AND anime lol because some anime just make you cry!

6)I don't know if i consider myself a vet but i do have enough expereince to say this. Expose yourself early or else it'll bite you in the butt when you release your game. Make blogs or something to create a fanbase.

2. I've never participated in such an event before. I joined this jam because I really enjoy hackathons and I think that I will enjoy making games in a limited amount of time just as well. I also want to focus on and improve my gamedev skills.

3. Some of my favourites: Cave Story, Sleeping Dogs, Age of Empires II, VVVVVV, Zineth, FF VII, and a lot more.

4. I have some experience in cloning old arcade games (I pride myself on creating a Pong game which runs in cmd in plain C ^_^).

5. I love acquiring new knowledge and experience. My biggest passion is music. I'm also keen on gamedev (obviously) and computer science in general. My favourite activities are cycling and hiking.

6. I have little to say but the best advice I can give is to move in small steps but continuously.

This is my first ever time making a game and participating in a jam.

I love open world rpgs such are the witcher 3 and skyrim so these are the main inspirations for my want to create similar games.

I have a little experience in 3D modelling and the Unreal Engine (most of which is now long forgotten) so the jam is a chance to develop experience.

I'm extremely passionate about art of most kinds; drawing & painting, guitar & singing and writing poetry.

2. Never participed in any jam ever, my friend Crouton decided to participate this year and i said to myself "why not, it's only for two weeks after all", i don't really know if this is a good idea since i already have a project (a game all made in C++, didn't really start tho) for this year, but yeah it's only for two weeks so why not ?

3. There are soooo many games i love, the first that comes to my mind are Dark Souls, Super Mario 64, A Link To The Past, Super Metroid, the Metal Gear games... And i don't really have inspirations for the game i plan to do for the jam, i just said to myself "how can i make a game about cats and/or dogs in only 2 weeks, knowing that i never really made a game before and that i don't really know how to use GameMaker ?".

4. Like i said, i never really made a game before, except crappy rpgs on RPG Maker XP and 2003 when i was a kid. For this jam i plan to use Game Maker, never really used it, just tried it a bit, it seems nice.

5. Oh boy, OH BOY, there are so many things i love, i can't list all of them there. I mostly love video games, but i also love old animes and tokusatsu.

Nope, didn't participate last time. I'm joining this one because I want to make a game, and I think a structured community event will be interesting and help me with my goal.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

My favorite is Stardew Valley. I've logged so many hours on there. I love the addictive, intuitive nature of that game. Mostly the games that have inspired me have been pretty experimental-- text-heavy, lo-fi, parsers, Twine, etc.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

Yes, but I'm rusty. I used Scratch to make games back in 2009 or 2010, and I think I dabbled in Stencyl and RPGmaker around the same time. Beginner games like pong, basic platformers. I stopped about 5 years ago.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

Oh man.... I love music. So much. I play several instruments, sing, and I love listening to music. It fuels a lot of my creativity.

hi! im ace. i was in the first my first game jam but i couldn't complete my game due to lack of motivation and resources, but i have many more resources and a lot more time on my hands so i definitely plan to do better this year!

my favourite game of 2016 was definitely stardew valley. an incredibly inspiring and fun game. i'm usually more into indie games because they aren't afraid of trying something new and they have a lot of heart. i'm interested in telling stories and i'm hoping making games will be one way i can do so. i did a few classes at university about game development but they were very basic and i've forgotten most of it, so i'm pm starting fresh.

i'm passionate about diverse characters and being nice, and i hope my future projects reflect that. as someone who has participated before but didn't really "participate", i'd suggest at least checking the forums quite frequently, but also participating in the forums/discord chat if you can. it helps to motivate and reading about everyone else's projects really inspires me.

Hi! I'm Sio! I studied Environmental Science and am maybe thinking of studying Library Science (I work in the children's area at my library and I love it! Kids' books are the best). I've never been in a jam; in fact I only heard about this today! I wanted to try it out because game design always seemed like one of those things I could never do, but since this is for completely new beginners also, designing a game seems feasible. And why not try it out?

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I grew up playing point-and-click Adventure Games like Myst & Riven (Riven's been a big inspiration to me), Day of the Tentacle, Nancy Drew, etc. and I still really love those games. Most puzzle games will catch my eye haha. Some of my other favorite games are Okami, the Dragon Age series (especially DA2), the Legend of Zelda games (especially Wind Waker, another big inspiration), and Mass Effect (I feel like I'm forgetting some hmm.... :T). I really like Journey and Undertale and how different they are from standard games: Journey's storytelling is so unique and different, and Undertale makes you examine RPGs and how you think about them.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

No experience at all, though in college I took a class on Processing and really enjoyed it.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I really like art! I mostly work with pencil and pen, but I've worked with a lot of traditional media and I'm learning how to paint and draw digitally. This year I hope to try out a lot of new techniques in new and familiar media. I want to make more paintings, try out new ink techniques, learn more digitally, and sell more things consistently (like setting up a shop maybe?)

I also really like breadmaking, science (especially ecology and related fields), reading (comics!!), playing video games, and watching cartoons :)

6. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

Not a veteran at all haha but I'm really looking forward to learning a lot (and probably making a lot of mistakes haha)

This is actually my first time joining a jam, my goal in this jam is to get experience and to actually share it publicly with people.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

Hard question.. My dream of starting to make games came from a ps1 game named Grandia, which is one of my all time favorite. Other games that I love are Zelda (MM, Wind waker, Oot & Twilight princess), Salt and Sanctuary, Blazblue, Star Ocean till the end of time/Second story, The legend of Dragoon, The Long dark, Dishonored, Okami, Tales of Symphonia, Elder Scrolls (Skyrim and Oblivion) & Fallout (3,NV and 4), Final Fantasy (9, 10 & 12) and so on..

Kind of hard to chose a favorite when there is so much good games but those are few that have inspired me/ given my daily dose of games.

I have some, not that I have really published anything, which is why I decided to join this jam. I started with game maker when I was at my second year of vocational college, after that I tried Rpg maker VX Ace and have after that moved to Unity, but probably planning on using Game maker on this jam.

6. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

Not a veteran, but based on what I learned from making games at school is;

Keep it simple!

Communicating with teammates is really important. On this I recommend having some small document you can update so all see your plan/ what your working on/whats done. It doesn't need to be big but helps a lot in my opinion. // I usually use google doc or a scrap paper.

If you have time/are able to then try to not forget to add some kind of sounds. (I actually kept forgetting this while making games at school but it adds a lot to the game)

1. Hi there! What's your name? Want to introduce yourself? Hey everybody! I'm Luis (or Ludipe) and I'm a game designer. I'm working on "A Place for the Unwilling" at AlPixel Games. I make games, travel around, participate in game jams and give talks.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining? I won't be participating on the jam, but I'll be around in case I can be of help.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own? I'm a huge puzzle-game nerd, so "The Witness" would be on the top of the list. I kinda got into gamedev because of "Braid". I spend quite a lot of time playing small games, I don't usually put several hours into one single game (except for "The Witness", "Dark Souls" and "Rocket League").

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine? I've been making games for over 3 years now. I've published over 40 small games and even got one on Steam. I'm a full-time indiedev. When working alone I use Construct 2, though in "A Place for the Unwilling" we're using Unity.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about! I kinda like a bit of everything, which helps a lot when making creative work. Books, music, tv shows, comics, movies, etc. Love them all.

6. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)? This is going to sound silly but I swear it's not. The best advice I could give to any of you (after taking part in about 40 jams) is to have fun. Jamming with friends IS fun. Crunching and not resting ISN'T fun. Sharing your progress with others IS fun. Giving up ISN'T fun. If you want to use a certain tool or technique (like hand-drawing all the art) then go for it, because if you want to do that then it'll BE fun. Do the fun things, avoid the others :-P

Hi my name is Logan, I am currently a Junior in high school. I love playing the guitar and enjoying the snow in winter. I started learning to make games a few years ago but never really did anything. I was always playing video games instead of making them. I just released my first game just last summer on the App Store. The game is called Sqwared and can be downloaded for the iPhone and iPad (iPad version doesn't really work). I never got the game to work perfectly on all resolutions, but it was more for the experience of putting a game on the market.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I love making games however I often find myself getting distracted with other things and never finish the project. I'm hoping that by entering a Jam that I will focus more and be able to get the project done. I also love challenges.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

My most favorite game series of all time is hands down the Jak and Daxter series. My brother first introduced me to this series a while ago and fell in love with it. The story of the games were so amazing, the relationships you build with the characters in the game and the incredible plot twists that unfold later in the series were and still are some of the best I have ever seen and experienced in a game. Anyhow I remember thinking one day that "If I love playing games so much, why don,t I make one myself?" So I started learning to program and and make some art and a few years later hear I am entering my first game jam.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I currently use Unity as an engine for making games. I have taught myself various programming languages, however I mainly use C# when using unity.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I love playing video games, playing the guitar, and skiing.

This will be my first game jam, I am super excited and can't wait to get started.

I didn't - I think I signed up but the project just fell off my radar. With this being the new year, I'm motivated to create something new :)

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

The Final Fantasy series really got me into gaming, and then World of Warcraft made me consider myself as a more "serious" gamer. I love RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I enjoyed BioShock, Portal, Fallout, Overwatch, Diablo, Life is Strange, and a few indies like Stardew Valley, Stanley Parable, Beginners Guide, and Gone Home.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

None! I'll be using Twine.

There would be way too many games to list but I enjoy most Nintendo games and classic Playstation (like Crash, Ape Escape & Parappa). Mainly games with bright colors and funny dialogues catch my eyes (and heart). I also love rhythm, farming, simulation, puzzle and adventure games a lot. I love games. They all inspire me in some way or another, really.

I draft my ideas out on paper a lot but have only really worked in Twine for actual game development.

I'm really passionate about learning new things and creating stuff. It's amazing to have an idea and then execute it; I love seeing things I conceptualize in my mind come to life through various mediums.

I'm no veteran but I do want others to know that scope and scale is really important to dial back during your planning stages. Also to have fun with your idea! It makes a great difference!

Hi! I'm Classo, but calling me Mika is fine as well! I'm actually kind of making a game with a much larger scope (and more complicated things to do for it), but I thought that joining this jam would be great practice in coding for games!

I didn't; like I mentioned above, I thought this would be practice for coding for my other game in the future!

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I've got so many favorite games, but a few of the ones that will always have a place in my heart are the Spyro the Dragon games, the Fire Emblem games, and the entire Mother trilogy! I'm also quite attached to games like Rune Factory and/or Harvest Moon because of farm simulation, and games like The Sims and the Virtual Villagers series because of the 'playing god' thing going on around there.

A little! I mess around regularly with RPGMaker2003, and sometimes with RPGMaker VX Ace.

I adore writing and bringing to life any characters I've drawn out/conceptualized! Placing them in scenarios, imagining things they'd say and do, and designing themes after them and giving them a 'soul' - that's what makes me really happy!

Try doing what 3d animators do and 'block out' your game, work on the gameplay mechanics and worrgy about the assets later. I would rather play a finished game jam game that's made of rectangles and squares than a game that looks pretty but doesn't work.

Hello everyone! My name is MagicDoogies! I'm a 2D character artist and Illustrator that has a focus on game development as a career.
While this isn't exactly my first time participating in a Game Jam- it will be my first time participating in this one.

My favorite franchise of all time is Pokemon. No questions asked. However when I'm not playing that game I tend to really enjoy platformers, RPG's and JRPG's.
Games that currently hold the most inspiration for me would have to be Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The atmosphere, soundtrack, design, atmosphere, and tone hit all the right notes for me.
I don't have any experience in game development when it comes to coding, programming or using game engines. But I do have some experience in creating character sheets and guides that will help inform 3D modelers and animators down the pipeline.

One thing that always fire me up though is being able to create all sorts of monsters and creatures. I loved doing that even in my early childhood. So anything that allows me to go wild with that is a + in my book.

I've never participated in a game jam - this'll be my first. It'll be my first real game too! Last year I did a lot of fiddling with GameMaker and had some ideas for games I could make, but lacked the drive to follow through. Starting 2017 by finally biting that bullet seemed like a great idea, so I'm happy to have come across this jam.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

Shadow of the Colossus is my all-time favorite. Other favorites are FFXII, Kentucky Route Zero, Read Only Memories - many, many more. Recently, I played through The Last Guardian, and while I still prefer Shadow of the Colossus, this game completely blew me away. Atmosphere in games is really important to me, and Fumito Ueda and his teams have nailed it each time with architecture, music, character design, and everything in between. Those games, perhaps more than anything else, have inspired me to pursue game development.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

The only experience I have is the aforementioned fiddling with GameMaker, which, I think, resulted in enough know-how to make the extremely simple game I have in mind. Hopefully I'll learn more in the process! I'm also interested in Unity, but that's a little ways down the road.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

I like comics, movies, anime, boxing, ice skating, and fishing, but video games are really what I'm most passionate about. Games like The Last Guardian or Kentucky Route Zero are breathtaking experiences for me - I love taking my time and getting lost in that eerie atmosphere.

I did but I didn't finish. I think I just burned out last time and got distracted. Using this one as an excuse to work on a project and possibly help out other people using the same tools I am.

I'm a fan of most games. I got into gamedev mostly cause I like making silly little things.

Mostly have experience using the Godot engine, and a little bit of Unity.

I like swords. I do a lot of HEMA cause I'm a nerd about it.

6. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

Scope as small as you can while still having what makes the game tick.

Because the jam is a relatively long period of time, you have the opportunity to scrap things and start again. You will do something twice as fast the second time you do it so don't be scared about having to repeat stuff if you do end up starting over.

You will spend 90% of your time making the game and then another 90% polishing it, so don't expect immediate results.

  3. I don't have any specific game type as my favourite. I play everything that's good in my opinion:
    • RPGs (Baldur's Gate, Elder Scrolls, Witcher)
    • Action RPGs and MMO (Diablo and Guild Wars)
    • Strategies (Heroes of Might and Magic, Warcraft)
    • FPS (Quake, Doom)
    • TPP Action (GTA, Red Dead Redemption, new Batman, TC: The Division)
    • Racing (Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsports, some Need for Speeds)
    • Sports (FIFA series)
    • Simulation (Flight Simulator, Train Simulator)
    • Retro (Super Mario Bros, Super Mario World, Pokemon on GameBoy Color)
    However, I've always been a single player. Except Guiild Wars all my favourite games I played solo.

  4. No, I'm completely fresh. Unless you count a high school project back in year 2000, when I made a 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' clone. It was written in Pascal, using graphic mode, running in DOS. Long time ago, seems like a Stone Age nowadays.

  5. I'm passionate about everything that's related to gaming. Both video games and more traditional ones (tabletop, card games). Sometimes I love to dive into a good book, movie or TV series. Except that, I have a family and a wonderful son that I'm slowly starting to introduce in the world of games.

Welp uh... hi there! I'm Nine, or Ren, both names are acceptable. ^^; Guess I should introduce myself. I've never participated in any game jam before because...

I'm pretty much entirely new to coding! I've been dinking about with Gamemaker Studio pro since I got it on a humble bundle for ridiculously cheap, and have been having a pretty great time muddling through things with GML and learning to code (I set myself the task to never use the drag and drop interface, or use it as little as physically possible, since it's not as much fun as puzzling out code for some reason! Yeah I don't understand it either ^^; ), and then a friend indicated this jam to me, and I figured I should give it a shot, for multiple reasons.

First: It will help me learn to code.
Second: It'll teach me good time management and goal orientated behaviours
Third: I'll be more motivated to keep on task and not let myself get distracted. ^^;
Fourth: coding games seems like it could be a lot of fun!

I've always liked shmups even though I'm usually terrible at them, and I really enjoy most games to be honest. I crave good storytelling in videogames, and I'm of the opinion that whilst good graphics are a great thing, I'm happy for stunning beautiful backgrounds and eyecandy to take a back seat to an actually playable game and great engaging characters and worldbuilding, though there is always a place for more simplistic, less cerebral and more pure fun oriented games as well, such as abstract puzzlers or weird esoteric stuff :)

I think the only prior experience with gamedev I have other than super recently, is way back when I messed around with BASIC on my Spectrum 128K+2a years back when I was a little kid (for all of a sum total of a day or two maybe), or the brief stint I tried Klik & Play and The Games Factory out (again, many years back as a teen). Neither of those attempts ever got anywhere nor did I make anything that was functional, fun or well designed, and I grew bored of it very quickly. This latest attempt I seem to be having way more fun with, mostly because I'm actually coding? GML's surprisingly fun to use!

as for things I'm passionate about, um... Cats, being a good person, human rights, and really nice cups of tea. Oh and cute things. ^^;

Hey, I'm razorsharpsmile! I'm very new to coding and making video games but I've dabbled in various "creative" stuff over the years like drawing, creative writing, writing LARPs and GMing tabletop RP.

I've never done a game jam before but I'm very excited! :D I got the GameMaker Humble Bundle and that sparked my interest in trying my hand at making games. All I've done so far is a tutorial and the beginnings of a clicker game about bees, so I'm looking forward to attempting something a bit more advanced (and actually finishing something of my own).

My favourite games are probably ES III: Morrowind (and not ES IV), Dishonored, the Zero Escape series and Analogue: A Hate Story. I love exploration and world-building.

Nope, first timer here! I found out about this through the GirlGamers subreddit and the more I clicked through those beautiful lists of engines, resources and tutorials, the more I wanted to participate.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

I've been playing Stardew Valley since Christmas, so there's that. Otherwise I really enjoyed the worlds of Bioshock or Dishonored, and hugely enjoy story driven games like the Walking Dead series, Firewatch, Dr. Langeskov and that super huge long title, Oxenfree, Her Story. I like to take my time playing a game, that's why I like turn based strategy stuff, especially The Banner Saga and the new Shadownrun games. And Wesnoth will always have a special place in my heart. <3

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

Nope, no experience! I've played around with the Shadowrun Editor, but never finished anything. I will try to work with the free RPG Maker Version, because it seems to be the easiest to start with, having no experience whatsoever.

hi my name is zodi! i love to draw and write stories! i'm also a front-end dev. i'm currently in art school but haven't been able to keep up due to my physical health. i'm still trying to work hard everyday which is why i decided to join this jam!

i've been thinking about developing a game for a little while now... i was talking about it on twitter and J pointed out their jam was coming up and that i should participate!

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

i like a ton of different games! i really like splatoon a lot because it's cute and colorful, but above everything else it just feels really good and fun to play. also bloodborne is a really satisfying journey (the animations and art direction are top notch), i also love journey and monument valley... they're very quiet and beautiful and make me think of games like ico and shadow of the colossus. i'm actually thinking of drawing a lot of inspiration from monument valley, since my game is going to be a puzzle platformer. i thought about 3D zelda dungeons at first (twilight princess is my favorite lol I KNOW I KNOW.. but it's so pretty and midna is the best companion), but i'm thinking isometric view would be more practical to solve platform based puzzles. last but not least, i think her story is one of the best indie games out there! most of these games were made in unity, my engine of choice.

i have very little experience with game dev, but as a web developer i do know a thing or two about javascript or php. their syntaxes are very similar to those of C languages, so it hasn't been too hard learning how to develop in C# (i use unity). game dev does not have the same purpose as web dev though, so there's a lot i still have to learn!

a lot of things!!!!!!!!! i think mostly drawing, writing, and interface design, and programming...... i just love designing things in general LOL gamedev is very appealing to me because it involves both technical knowledge (everything related to programming) and creativity. these are two sides of a project i enjoy doing and i want to see them be complementary to eachother even if it means twice as much work.

6. Any advice to new jammers (if you're a veteran)?

IM NOT EVEN CLOSE TO A VETERAN but here's a tip from me to you based on all the learning i've done when it comes to web dev: small achievements are best! don't set your goals too high. i think a lot of others said this but it's true! small victories will keep you going whereas aiming too high will feel discouraging, and if you don't get there by the end you will feel disappointed in yourself... so, even if it's something tiny like getting a script to work or finding out how weightpainting works be proud of yourself and keep going!

also: make a list of all the games you like (or things you like in games you don't like) and write down why that is, try to understand what makes it good/satisfying/etc. try to analyse what media you consume as much as possible. this is more from my experiences with writing. you can even list games or stories you dislike, and try to learn from writing down all the reasons you think it's bad! you might even come up with ideas in the process!

Oh wow, so many. I have a soft spot for RTS games (Warcraft 3 being my personal favourite), but I'll play anything as long as it does something interesting. Recently I've been sinking a lot of time into Duelyst.

Kinda. Most of my real experience is actually in making and running tabletop/live action/real-world escape room games. My current job is running escape rooms. That being said I've barely touched video game dev in quite some time (mostly due to developing mental health problems at University).

Aw man, there are too many to list. Off the top of my head, a few that have inspired me would be Stardew Valley, Terraria, Paper Mario: TTYD... the list goes on and on, though.

I decided late last year that I want to make one new game every month this year. This seemed like the ideal way to kick my own ass into starting.

I typically play MMOs or Pokemon games, but smaller older games are what really capture my creative imagination. Old-school RPGs and shooters really make me think about what I can do.

1. Hi everyone! I write, I make interactive fiction, I study literature and classical antiquity, and I sleep a lot.

2. This is my third round of MFGJ! A year ago I made a demo for my first real dev project, and last summer I learned some skills in a new engine. This time, I don't plan to create a solo project -- I'll be here primarily as a mentor! You can email me, DM me, or find me on Discord now and then if you need help or advice. Unfortunately, I can't be on Discord a ton, but I'll still try to pop in from time to time, and I totally encourage you to drop me a line elsewhere if you need to. I'll also be hanging around the forums hollering happily at all of your projects throughout the jam! I'm so excited to see what everyone makes!!

3. Silent Hill, Soulsborne, Drakengard & Nier, Shadow of the Colossus & The Last Guardian, Baten Kaitos, Okami, and Sunless Sea are some of my absolute favorites and I could sing their praises for years. I love horror games (especially indie horror and classic RPGMaker horror like Yume Nikki, IB, Ao Oni, etc), but I also have a huuuuge soft spot for games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing. I just really love video games in general; interactive fiction of all kinds has always inspired me.

4. I have experience primarily with Twine (2.0 & 1.4), Ren'py, and RPGMaker (2003, VX Ace). My projects are typically 2D and narrative-oriented. In the last year, I've worked on about a dozen games and prototypes! I'm currently focusing on WDYTYA and a couple of visual novels.

5. Writing! Narrative structure! Character design! Art! Horror fiction! Weird old stuff people dig up in the Mediterranean! Petting cats!!!

6. Don't be too hard on yourself! The initial vision of any project is usually your ideal vision, and being flexible about its outcome is vital. Everyone's said this, but: keep your scope manageable to prevent yourself from getting overwhelmed or discouraged. Don't be afraid to cut, scrap, or rework things. Like if you start thinking you need to switch engines, give it a try as soon as possible. That fresh start can be daunting, but it'll probably make you more productive, efficient, and comfortable in the long run. Remember that developing a new skill takes time, and what you end up making doesn't have to be perfectly polished. As long as you've learned something new, you're doing great.

1. Hi, I'm Innes! I'll be posting about my game dev on my Tumblr.

2. I didn't participate in the last one, though I've done multiple game jams before. I've never actually FINISHED a game to the point that I'd feel comfortable putting it on Itch. This is a kick in the pants.

3. I really liked Sims/MySims when I was younger (and I still glare at Sims 4 longingly cause I don't have it). Christine Love's Digital: A Love Story and Analogue: A Hate Story opened my mind to what a visual novel could be, and Porpentine's various games (especially With Those We Love Alive, with its analogue elements of play) have had a big impact on me.

4. I have the most experience with Twine, I've made prototypes in Construct 2, Ren'Py, and RPGMaker VX Ace, and I have passing experience with Inform 7. If I've worked with something else, it has slipped my mind.

5. Accessibility, especially as it relates to games. With my disabilities, a lot of games are (usually accidentally) rendered unplayable for me -- the developer expects that the player will be able to understand spoken English without visual aid, react to text/images in a short time frame, or perform complex hand movements quickly and precisely. Which are things I can't consistently do, lol. I'm not saying EVERY game has to be accessible to everyone; that's unreasonable. But there are a lot of games that would just need small tweaks to be more accessible than they are.

6. Use the resources at your disposal; that's what they're for. It's a waste of everyone's precious time, including yours, if you're fretting over how to make snickerdoodles, but you haven't looked at the resource list, which includes "Ten Easy Recipes for Snickerdoodles." Or some other example more suited to game dev. I speak from experience!

I did sign up for the last jam, but I didn't actually do anything. This time, I'm going to actually make something, hopefully. I just hope school doesn't get in the way.

I've always been inspired by indie games that are mostly made by one person. Stuff like Cave Story, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Stardew Valley, etc. Those types of games always make me want to try and make my own game.

I have practically no experience in game development. I messed around a bit with Construct 2 in the last jam, but that's about it.

5. Tell us about something you're passionate about!

A couple things that I like are music and visual art, but above all else, I love video games.

Don't be lazy like me. Actually submit something. Even if you didn't finish it, you can still be proud of the fact that you made something.

Hey, I'm Jyzavi. Most people call me Jay. I participated in the summer version of the jam last year and started with a twine game to get my feet wet. This time I'm trying out Game Maker Studio. I don't have any experience with it so wish me luck, haha.

My current favorite games are Overwatch, Kentucky Route Zero, and Job Simulator 2050. There are more, many more. I'm not sure if any of them in particular inspired me to make my own, I'm just madly in love with video games as a form.

Other than games I'm really into theatre, specifically the behind the scenes parts like set design and tech crew and all that. Food is also just...so important to me ok. I love cooking and trying out new recipes, I love experimenting with spices.

I'm not sure how much of a veteran I count as, but my advice to other people would be: Give it your all and don't worry about failure! Even if you don't really have a game at the end of the jam you will learn a lot and maybe even make some new friends along the way. Especially if you hang out in the voice chat.

Hello, everyone! I am David, but I go by the alias, baportabo, online. I am an 18 year old computer science student, but will study game design after graduating.

This is my actually first time, so I am very excited to see what everyone will be crafting!

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

Some of my favorite games are Dungeon Souls and Nuclear Throne. There is just something about roguelikes that captivates me. I mean, their pixel art is freaking gorgeous!

Well, right now, I'm just beginning my journey in game development. I'm currently using Game Maker Studio as my engine.

1. Hello. My name's Joe. I work in a supermarket, making pizzas.

2. This is the first game jam I've attempted. I joined because making games is a kinda fun thing to do, and it would be good to have a deadline to motivate me to finish something.

3. The game that made me want to make games was The Stanley Parable. The game that made me think maybe I could was Undertale. Neither of them are my favourites really, but they got me into this in the first place.

4. I once made a half-finished Gamemaker game for a live performance about the film Alien. I talked and performed while someone played it on a big screen. It wasn't a game that would work on its own though. The most complex thing it did was move left and right, and other things moved left and right and up and down when you reached certain bits, you know. Sometimes sounds played, but never when I'd wanted them to.

5. I guess I'm passionate about making things that tell stories, and also reading things that tell stories, and watching/playing/listening to them.

Originally my boyfriend and I planned to participate in this jam last year, but we found we didn't have the time. We've been wanting to collaborate on making a game for a long time now so when I saw that the jam was happening again, I really wanted to join!

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

My favorite games are Paper Mario 64 and TTYD, Okami, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Legend of Zelda (Majoras Mask and Twilight Princess are my favorites), Super Mario Sunshine, Persona 3, TWEWY, Katamari, Monster Hunter, and recently Hyper Light Drifter and Undertale. They all inspire me in certain ways which I could probably talk about for hours if given the chance.

Not at all! I'm not even the one doing the coding for this project, haha...I'm collaborating with StumpCricket for this jam! I'm just doing the art for it, but in the future I hope to mess around with gamemaker and other programs on my own.

Hey, I'm Jadon, not much else to say other than that! I also study Japanese in college, and I'm planning on becoming a translator, though originally I intended to study computer science. I've been wanting to make games for a long time and I'm finally doing it!

Nope, this is my first time! I wanted to participate with artisticazurite in the last jam, like I am now, but as she said there just wasn't enough time. Like I said, I've wanted to make games my whole life but I never really found the motivation. Actually, since I can't draw at all a lot of it has to do with having someone to do the art now. Seeing the actual graphics and not just solid color boxes makes the results a lot more tangible!

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

Pretty much all of my favorites have inspired me both to make my own game and in general. They include Pikmin, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, Zelda (especially Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time), Undertale, Earthbound, LISA, Dwarf Fortress, Paper Mario, Morrowind, Metroid (favorite 2D is Super Metroid, favorite 3D is Metroid Prime) The Metal Gear Series, Yakuza, Nier, Ape Escape, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Monster Hunter, Okami, Super Mario World, Katamari, and a million others I'm sure I'm forgetting to list.

None! I have extremely basic knowledge of Computer Science when I took it in high-school and briefly for the semester-and-a-half I was a computer science major in college, but even then I've never made or attempted making a game.

Games are probably the thing I'm most passionate about, but I'm also very passionate about music, making stories, etc. There's a lot of things I would say I'm passionate about to varying degrees!

2. I didn't attend the last jam. In truth I didn't even know about this jam until recently. The atmosphere here is fun and inviting, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to join. I also want to create something to add to my portfolio.

3. My favorite games span all sorts of genres. I love S4 League, Borderlands, Transistor, World of Warships, Overwatch, Duelyst, Hyper Light Drifter, and Skyrim. Yea, I'm all over the place x). S4 League stands as my one true inspiration. It was so good before it got taken over by hackers :/

4. I have experience with game development. I'm in that weird middle ground where I'm not a beginner and I'm not a veteran.If veterans were level 100... I'd say I'm level 30 or 40? Some of the engines & languages I use are Unity, GameMaker, Processing, Java, and JavaScript.

5. I LOVE to design. Getting the core concepts and theories down, then improving them. I'm also really good at coding and can do some art (I made my avatar :P).

6. I've only done a few jams before, but I can offer two extremely important pieces of advice:
a) "It's dangerous to go alone". and unnecessary. Find a friend or someone from a forum to join you. Find two (or more)! A jam is much more enjoyable with friends.
b) Beware of scope creep! Write down your idea, list the essentials of it from must-have to it-would-be-nice, boil that down some more, then make the game. Start from the topmost necessary parts, and work your way down.

Yes I did! I'm getting out of my comfort zone slightly and trying a new engine I've never used until now, GameMaker. Hopefully I can get a decent game working!

I have so many favourites. I'm a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda series, Pokemon, Portal, Tales of series, Fantasy RPGs in general, RPG Horror games such as Ib, The Witch's House, Mad Father, Misao, etc. I also love various Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing-type games, and plan on making 1 or 2 (though maybe not for this jam ^_^') As of late, Undertale and Grim Fandango have been my obsessions!

And yes, most if not all of these have been huge inspirations for me, and quite possibly elements from all of these might go into my newest project!

Have fun with it! Don't worry, and don't sweat it! Have little stepping stones set out for you along the way (ex: make player sprite, then have them walk around in the environment, have some water and/or a snack, make character interact with something, etc. etc.) and don't be afraid to reach out to fellow jammers for help or just to chill and talk with, I failed to do that last round and I missed out on some stuff ^_^'''

Hello! I am Plum, and I keep changing my handle on every website I sign up for so it's kinda hard to keep track of me. I'm currently making my way towards some sort of degree in college. I really want to work in game design/development when I get out of college, but my college doesn't really teach that kind of thing, so I am trying to teach myself? College is weird.

I'm joining up in this jam because I live in a desert in the middle of nowhere, and there are no cool gamedevs around for me to talk about games with. That said, if you wanna make a new videogame-developer friend, please message me! I am always down to talk about game design. ALSO I work best when I have a deadline, so hopefully this jam will make me finally finish something.

I really love the Dark Souls series, but I also like all sorts of smaller indie games, such as Undertale, the Beginner's Guide, stuff like that( and also I love all of the stuff that comes out of this website as well.) I've had powerful experiences of many different flavors through many different games, so I guess I just want to recreate that feeling in my own work.

I really have no experience at all! I've always been interested in game design and development, but I've never taken a real swing at it. I'm two weeks into teaching myself Unity and C#, so we'll see how that goes!

I'm really into the radical potential of video games! They're a huge form of media that millions of people consume, but it's rare to see games approach diverse or complicated subjects in a mature way. I'd like to try doing that myself, when I have more experience.

I am not a veteran at all, but it never hurts to save ALL THE TIME. And have lots of backups of your files. On different hard drives. In different locations.

The identity I use for game development is Glutamate Dehydrogenase (GDH for brevity). I'm a 25 year old biological science graduate student, if the name didn't give it away.

2. Did you participate in the last jam we held? If so, what do you plan on doing better this time? If not, what's your reason for joining?

I've never participated in a game jam before, I've got about a month off where I'm basically a NEET until the semester starts. Figured I may as well finally go beyond tutorial projects and unfinished prototypes.

3. What games are your favorites? Did any of them inspire you, or made you want to make your own?

The original Deus Ex has always been my absolute favorite. I also enjoyed the System Shock series, earlier Fallout games (and New Vegas), and the Elder Scrolls series. I've also played Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 since their release. I've always wanted to develop a game fully, but I've never gotten around to it properly - doing the programming equivalent of writing chapter one and then forgetting about it.

4. Do you have experience with game development? What did you do/with what engine?

I've messed around with Unity tutorials, and when I was a child I played around with QBASIC and DarkBasic. I managed to make simple games, even a very simple FPS (one room, constantly spawning enemies), but never anything large scale.

Science in general, mainly. Get a few drinks in me and I will not shut up about the minutiae of molecular biology in particular.
