Super well crafted entry. The controls are responsive (Even though, if you are holding the shotgun and press the action button, it shoots. My poor chickens...), and this game hold myself for a good 30 minutes straight.

And there is something that I think I notice as well: Is the map random generated each time? It looks like, but I need to know if that is actually true. Congrats man!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed yourself (unlike those poor, poor chickens). The map is procedurally generated each game - it wasn't part of the original plan, but I did it in the end and it's probably my favourite feature, despite how subtle it is for most people who only play once. Thank you for playing and for the kind feedback!

Submitted(+1)

This is impressively polished. I think I would have preferred it as just a cosy chore simulator without the wasps. Or to have that element of danger more integrated, I think it could be good either way but in this version the fights felt jarring and a bit tacked on.

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! We see the combat as a core feature since it's the upgrading of weapons to survive the increasingly difficult nights that gives the money and materials in the game a purpose, however we did consider adding a peaceful mode and it's very interesting that you've suggested it. Much appreciated!

Submitted(+1)

That makes sense. I'm always interested in non-abstract games that find ways to develop purpose without violence. But running around shooting stuff is fun too.

This may or may not be useful feedback since it's about totally subjective preferences but here it is anyway: Stress ramp mechanisms make me, you know, stressed. So the increasingly horrible swarms of wasps isn't really a thing I enjoy. I do like the exploration/dungeon crawl structure where difficulty ramps the further you go from home but home is always safe so long as you can get back. I can imagine a game where the farm economy -> upgrades mechanism is used to allow trips deeper and deeper into the hinterlands to collect more valuable seeds or capture rarer animals or something. But that starts to be a completely different game...

All that is mostly to say, your game has me sitting here still thinking about it a couple of hours later so thumbs up to you.

Developer(+1)

I love this feedback, and I think I agree with you - if we had a lot more time to think and consider, we probably could have come up with something similar that is violence free, but still depends on the gathering money to progress and keeping the overall chaos of the game. In the end, Scunthorpe Scavenger was originally meant to be a chaotic farming game where there is always something to be thinking about, and we chose to implement the ramping fight as a way to progress each day. If it's not your style, then that's totally cool, "stress" games aren't for everyone!

Either way, thank you for your feedback and consideration, it is seriously appreciated.

Shooting is very satisfying, well done game :-)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I like getting 100 shot speed upgrades and having a rapid fire shotgun

Submitted(+1)

Really nice game. The music creates a great atmosphere. The tutorial is a bit overwhelming but you made an impressiv game for 48 hours.

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the music, sorry about the overwhelming tutorial, it is a bit of a wall of text

Submitted(+1)

You made so much in only a week i'm impressed man!

This is like a small Stardew Valley Game

Keep it up!

Developer

Thank you for the kind words! That's what we were sort of going for before we started adding exploding wasps and the sort

Submitted(+1)

Performance of the web build worked great for me. No issues here. There is a lot of stuff this game does great: The music is really good, animation are simple but totally work, the sound effects are nice. You can already see at the beginning of the game that there is lots of stuff to do in this game. I was also positively surprised when enemies would attack at night. Good stuff! One thing that could be improved:

The tutorial was a bit too much for me to read through. And that's mostly because you can and have to do everything right from the start. I think a more relaxed entry to the game would have worked better. Like if you could only do crops for the first few days and would have to buy the animals so that the game expands the longer you play.

Anyways, good entry. Had fun! :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for that feedback! You're definitely right about a lower barrier of entry; rather than a linear wall of text I think a day-by-day informational would be better, a little bit like you suggested. Glad you had fun though!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, there's a lot to this game. Nice job!

Developer

Thank you, much appreciated!

I'm not gonna be original in my comment, but: Woah! Impressive work!

I'm blown away by the amount of work that you put in this game!

I'm not a big fan of farmer game, but I had fun, especially during night when we have to protect our farm :D

Overall nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks man! No need to be original haha, any and all feedback is much appreciated :)

Submitted(+1)

Not really my cup of tea when it comes to the genre, but it's quite incredible that you have made this in such a short period of time. As other have complained, my only real issue (besides maybe a little lack of originality) is that it needed a more expansive tutorial instead of just a big wall of text, given the variety of the things you managed to put in. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Totally fair, thanks for playing either way!

Submitted(+1)

Wow! This is really impressive for a game jam. I'll admit I didn't have enough time to play for any length but I would love to sit down for an hour and really get stuck into this. It's very well polished and the music was very nice.

As others stated it does throw you in fairly fast and the tutorial did feel like a wall of text a bit, although I completely understand with the time limitations. If you took this project further a tutorial level which eased you into each mechanic would be awesome.

This is a fantastic entry and as someone from the UK I got a great laugh out of the Scunthorpe name and 'Rural Hellscape', well played!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback! I would love to add a tutorial level - if I update the game after the jam that's probably the first thing I'll add - but thank you for your understanding.

I sincerely hope that nobody who actually lives in Scunthorpe comes across this game...

Me: I can't find cows.

Also me at dawn: You monster!

Very very good game!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

At least meat is worth 150 money right?! Thank you for playing :)

Submitted(+1)

This game is insane. Super well polished and just such a nice feel. The music and the sfx are great and the juiciness of it all, super job! :)

Developer(+1)

That's very kind of you to say, thank you! I'm happy you liked the music and SFX, it was all homemade to a certain extent so was a little nervous about it!

Submitted(+1)

Really comprehensively made. Good job. There's a lot sort-of 'put on' you at the start but once you get into a groove, it's a very engaging gameplay loop.

Developer

Thank you so much, the tutorial is very heavy at the start, but I'm glad you found the way in the end!

Submitted(+1)

Wow This is really well done and feels like a game that could be played for awhile! Really engaging

Developer

Thank you so much, super glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

The game is really fun! It's admittedly a little hard to get into at first, but once you get into the swing of things it's really fun! I really like the exploding wasps idea to give the game some variety with the gameplay.

Developer

Thank you for playing, I'm really glad you enjoyed it in the end!

Submitted(+1)

Felt like a "real game", good job

Developer

Thank you for the kind review!

Submitted(+1)

Me playing the game:
> "Mhm, okay, yeah, barn, got it. Growing crops... okay. Cows... exploding, wait what? Okay, there are chickens, too. Uugh, what was the first thing you said? Wait... Exploding Wasps!?..."

(some time later)

The Game: "The cow has been teleported to your barn"
Also the game: "You monster".
Exploding wasp: "explodes"

Okay, so, joking aside, this looks like a really well polished game. There are many systems involved and I feel like I could get into this. I also really appreciate the humor in the game.

However, it's really hard to get into at first, with all the tutorial happening all at once and no real way to refresh how I'm supposed to do things. I only played a minute or so before I kind of gave up, not really knowing what to do next.

I'll probably come back to this, though. It has more depth than I'd expect from a game jam game, so it has a lot going for it, I'd say.

Developer (1 edit)

I'm super glad you got something out of our game! I think it would have been good to include a separate tutorial stage on the menu, but alas, no time. The game has some replayability if you lose the first time, but I appreciate that there are many other games to review. Thanks again for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

It is a little bit much information at the beginning. I had problems finding in. But then it was a solid game. Nice polished. Well done! :)

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! Gonna add a few basic pictures to the itch.io page just to make it clear what certain things do. The polish comes from being a perfectionist, which definitely isn't ideal in a game jam!

Submitted(+1)

Very well polished but right clicking to place stuff in the barn doesn't seem to work? Watering the plants doesn't either. This could all just me being stupid so I would appreciate some guidance so I can play the game more

Developer

Thank you for playing our game! The tutorial doesn't really make these things clear, I agree. To place stuff in the barn, it's left click (right click to take stuff out). To water the plants, you need a full watering can (see the 3 bottles next to the sprite in the hotbar), which can be refilled at the well while holding it (to the right of the farm).

Submitted

I also left clicked but it didn't seem to work,I'll fiddle with it and let you know if it's a me being dumb thing or something with the game. Oh yeah, that makes sense with the watering can, I remember there being a well but I thought my can was full since the icons are slightly ambiguous. I'll have to check out the game again!

Developer

I just gave it a test in the web version and it seemed to work fine, make sure you're clicking on the items in the barn menu rather than on the barn itself or the items in your inventory!

Submitted(+1)

ah I see, that was my issue I was just clicking the barn itself. Thanks for the tip!

Submitted(+1)

Ok so I went back to the game after your tips and I ended up enjoying it! It is a very well polished game with a cool gameplay loop. My issue with the game is the controls. It is strange having to use both clicking and the spacebar to interact with things. It is unintuitive and I often kept pressing the wrong buttons, and I once accidentally shot my cow while trying to get milk. I feel like all of the interactions should either be controlled with either the mouse or the space bar, having a mix of both made it really hard to get into a rhythm

Developer

I'm glad you liked it :D thank you for your criticisms, if I update the game I will make it so you can click with every tool rather than just the shotgun

Submitted(+1)

Yes that would be great! And also a step-by-step tutorial and the game's golden

Submitted(+1)

I like your game very much! It is very polished, and has a lot of working systems for a jam game! The only issue I have is the lack of some tutorial level that would explain everything in small chunks of information, because I've got a little lost in the beginning, even with tutorial turned on. I would understand more if, for example, there was a cow in front of me, and big letters on top of screen said "THIS IS A COW, YOU CAN TAKE HER TO FARM FOR MILK OR KILL HER FOR MEAT" :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I completely agree about the tutorial, it's something I would have like to have done differently, but given the time constraint, by the time I'd finished it I had to move on to other features. Thanks for the feedback!
