Really cool and unique idea. Impressive for 2 days!
I couldn't make it very far, I'm probably bad, but it would've helped to have some sort of locking mechanism to the ball when you're close enough to it and become a flipper. I couldn't go through the "tunnel" at the left near the beginning. Wish there was a reset button too.
Check and rate our game if you can :) It's a puzzler top-down shooter where you absorb and shoot back enemy bullets, there are strengths and weaknesses among the different enemies (and yourself after absorbing something). Try to beat every level with one shot!
If there's one game (besides our own) that I wanted to "win" the jam, it's this one right here! The game has a lot of charm, poor Mr. Flipper just can't catch a break. The art style reminds me of Toejam & Earl because of the scratchy & colorful sprites. I also like how the ball slows down when you pop off the board so you have more time to position yourself. If there's any complaints I'd have it's that the physics are a bit janky and inconsistent, and once the ball falls in the lava, getting it out is a pain.
Now this is a tasty jam!
Solid gameplay and artstyle!
Really liked the idea! My only complain would have been the camera, if you need to swap fast from moving and hitting the ball it's hard to maintain the focus with the movement. If you want to rate our game: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/462077
Excellent idea & was fun!
This is amazing!
I like how the lava both acts as a penalty and makes sure players don't fall all the way to the bottom. I'd love to see this more polished, there's a lot of cool ideas here. I imagine the lightning flippers were going to be checkpoints? I think I'd like some more control with hitting the ball, it sometimes feels random where it'll end up, and sometimes it ends up under the flipper after I hit it.
This was very well executed! Great work!
Rly good idea, i like it so much!!!
Thanks for all the awesome feedback! Yah, I would like to adjust the physics to make the ball a bit punchy-er! Less floaty = harder without a lot of tuning, and in the time for the jam I didn't want to risk not getting it uploaded in time :)
Also, I'm curious is anyone noticed that when you are in "running" mode, the time on the board / ball slows to about 40% normal speed. It makes it way more manageable, but does add to floaty-ness a bit. I went back and forth a lot on whether to slow the music speed or do some other indication of this, but since you pop in and out so frequently I thought it would get grating.
Anyway, thanks all of the awesome response and feedback, it feels awesome to get some love :)
I think speeding up the ball would indeed make it much harder... The thing that bothered me was not that it felt "floaty" but rather that the ball slows down a lot on obstacles, when I would much rather it slide through tubes like a pinball. When it stops halfway through a tube it can feel awkward trying to catch it.
Slowing down the ball when the paddle is running is genius, and for some reason I didn't really notice it. I just knew that it was hard to catch the ball sometimes but not too unfair.
Also if I may ask, is the ball's collider not a perfect circle??
Yes, the ball's collider is a circle, but the cured obstacles aren't perfect as I had to draw those myself. I agree about the tubes and such. If I spend more time with this after the jam, I would like to make it feel a bit more "pinball-y" and try to get some smoother physics on stuff like tracks.
The concept is amazing. The problem is that the game is too hard and the ball is a little too floaty! But that should be an easy fix! I would love to see a post version of this! Great job!
I was led to believe that I could be able to win the game Until I gotten to the end where theres a sign that Just said WIN while the lava pools up to my balls doom. I was very sad.
Game is great Btw. it was kinda hard to difficult to controll the ball.
I loved the very unique gameplay and art style, it kinda reminded my of some gba games.
In the other hand, had some trouble with the controls as I felt like the ball was at bit too heavy and floaty but that's an easy fix for a post jam version and did not really take anything away from this great entry !
Incredibly unique game! Never would have thought of something like this. It's pretty tough though
This is super awesome! It may benefit if the ball gained more speed when flipped, otherwise it's really awesome!
This was one of my most anticipated games of this jam for me after I saw a video of it on twitter, and it really lived up to expectations. The concept is so original and fun, and the art is so charming. You did a really great job on it.
This was really unique and fun! The concept is fantastic and the art is great! The only real criticism I have is that the game felt really unforgiving. It might just be me being bad at games, but the lava felt like it was going faster than I could manage, and the ball felt really heavy, both because it falls really fast and because I could barely give it any momentum unless I hit it perfectly. That last part might just be because that's how pinball physics work, but I fee.l the game could be a little more forgiving of mistakes
This is super cool!
Really charming and fun. I could definitely see myself playing this again and again.
This game is great, would be 10/10 if there wasn't occasional clipping and if there was an actual win state. Other than that, it's a really cool idea done really well :)!!!
