REALLY well done! Very challenging until you learn the CHEESE/SPOILER/PRO TIP: Keep running toward the beast until you get under him. He can’t hit you, but you can hit him. keep slicing him until you pop back out front, then repeat!

LOVE IT! The animations and art style are impressive.

While rough around the edges, still very impressive character controller for a jam like this! Super ambitious, great job

Lots of love put into this project! The monster feels overwhelming because of the sheer size difference! Great art and animations too! ✨

Submitted

You are kidding! I hope people realize how much effort has been put into this. The animations are crazy smooth and there are a ton of them. It wastes no time, and puts you right in the action which makes it excel in the fun category in my book.

Definitely very impressive for a game jam game! Loved the presentation and aesthetics, and bonus for controller support. I repeatedly got my butt beat, but this one is great. Hope you guys keep it going.

whoa the game looked so cool! the beast is a little scary but definitely fits the vibe!

Hi! Very awesome adaptation of the Souls games. I found myself getting stuck in the boss though and couldn't move. this both granted me near immortality but just genuine confusion. I also agree with the others where sprint and roll have too slow a reaction time to the buttons, I had better luck pressing W. Otherwise, very well done! congrats on the submission :3

Hey I just tested your game with my 4yo daughter and haha wut... Straight to the boss? no story behind? And the name of the boss is LOOOOOOOOOOONG :P

Anyways, great attempt to create these mechanics! I still feel like there's much you guys could have done with the main character. There's no need to jump - and evading doesnt really evade... So beating the boss is a mix of monotonous and hard.... Like too short range, and he is op. :P

The game looked promising at first (specially the music) but after dying 12x times and just using a knife... Meh... That promise vaniashed pretty quickly.

The idea is great! I can imagine a longer game and flowing gameplay curve if you guys had more time to develop it further. But I guess thats what it is for a game jam...

We also did a dark souls - like game so take time to check it out!

P.D. kudos on doing it on 3d! That is lovely to see :3

Impressive presentation overall!

Like others have noted, the dodge roll is a bit too slow to actually be viable. The attack is also quite delayed
which is fine for this sort of game, but I did find myself getting locked into a double attack from not realizing the
first input had been read but not yet acted on. Overall our mouse hero sort of feels like he's fighting under water.

Hi! I'm sure as hell very bad at soulslike games, but can definitely appreciate one that is made good! Character design and animations are very cool! UI and overall game feel are on the professional level!

I tried a few times but was unable to defeat the wolf, although that's more to do with my lack of skill at souls-like games than any criticism of the game itself. It's a nice game well done.

nice game, assets look good, honestly I've never played a souls like game so wasn't very good but Xbox controls worked well in the browser good job!

Very courageous choice to try and recreate a souls boss fight!

The hit boxes were working surprisingly accurate and the art design is great. Great choice of music and SFX.

The slow roll animation though, I mean it's possible to use, but it's such a crucial part of the fight that I felt it ruined it. I think that if you could nail the roll, this is a very good project!

Cheers!

Overall - Badass shot at making a soulslike game! Really nailed the rage I felt playing through every Fromsoft installment haha. The art and characters were really cool and I think with a bit more love, the mechanics could be right up there with the best of them! Awesome job and I'm really hoping you continue to develop this!

Fun - Super fun, but super challenging! Once I read the reviews down here and got the tip about smacking the back, I was able to take the beast down. But it was tough going with how slow that roll is!

Theme - Nailed the theme for sure.

Aesthetics - Very cool - were these handmade assets? They looked so cool!

Music - Epic, but not overpowering. Nice and soulslike

Sound - The little mouse sqeaking after being smashed made me feel bad, but that's the sign of good sound design!

Mechanics - It might just be my playstyle, but I always went dex builds in the souls games because I love speed! So I was struggling with how slow the attacks and rolls were in this game. I would LOVE to see this game continued in development with some classes that might fit the styles of folks who like to scramble!

Story - I'm not sure if there was one, but it was badass nonetheless!

Thank you so much for this detailed review, very insightful. Our character artist modelled, rigged, and textured the mouse hero while also completing her final exams, impressive stuff! She also did the village houses of Mouseholes (btw Mouseholes == Mouse Souls).

Those mouse hits are painful so I wanted the SFX to hurt a bit too. There's a story blurb on the itch page, but mostly I was just going for a vibe to not interrupt the action.

I absolutely loved your guys' game. Drop me a message here or somewhere if you all decide to expand it, I'd love to be a play tester or somehow involved.

Managed to beat it after a few tries, my winning strat was to sprint near the butt, stopping for a moment, then moving forward to get 1/2 attacks in from behind, ended up not using the dodge. I would say forcing me to find a way to cheese it is very soulslike though, so good job.

Developer(+1)

Cheese seems appropriate for a mouse too 🧀 😊

Very Souls like, i.e. designed to cause rage quits, the mouse’s movements are slow and unstoppable, but skills issues aside, I managed to exploit the fact that the wolf doesn’t attack when you’re on its hind legs the whole time. The setting is nice, you can see the inspiration. Keep going!

Developer(+1)

Oh no! You discovered the secret strategy! Our character artist told me she does exactly this tactic, so in my cruel depravity, I went and added a little behavior AI where he tries to move and quickly turn out of the way if you come at him from the rear angle, but it's still sort of possible (it has to be possible, after all).

Submitted(+1)

Roll feels un BEAR-ably slow and unresponsive other than that good fun!

Developer(+1)

skill issue git gud

Just kidding i just always wanted to say that. I tried speeding the roll up but it made the whole thing way too easy - ultimately boring. Making this, I sometimes felt like I was choreographing a dance, where each move and its response was a set of animations. Surprisingly tricky stuff!

Really cool(nice to see another dark souls inspired game). The mechanics feel nice and I like the style. Good work!

Developer

We talked a lot about the game Grounded while we were concepting. I bet you guys were too!

I like how easy it is to just launch from browser.  I couldn't kill the cat tho.

Developer

Ah, I know you can do it. It's not that hard when you get the hang of it. Here's my Prima guide:
Don't button mash, only press Attack and Dodge one time and do so deliberately.
Don't be greedy. If he attacks and misses you, get in there and land one (1) attack on him. Then run away again. You're just a tiny mouse.

Do that just enough times to find the rhythm and you've saved your village.
