How does your game utilize the limitation and theme?
Collectable Sheet Music and a Musical Dream Journey that both starts and ends within the little boy's home. (Also you have to travel back and forth between Crystals and Music Stands)

What was your team size?

Solo

You worked alone

Which of the following content in your game is NOT 100% newly made for the jam?

Affirm you have followed ALL jam rules. (Select all below or your entry will be disqualified.)

We have credited all assets used in the game including our own name(s) or team name(s)

All original game code and original assets were made during the jam period

The game does not include NSFW or hateful content

The game works on the web or as a Windows 10 download

We have answered all submission questions honestly and completely

If your game includes any of the optional challenges, select them below:

Theme Party

Use a theme and/or limitation from one of the past 8 Bits to Infinity jams in addition to the main theme

In a Song

The game is as long as a single backing music track

If you did any of the optional challenges, explain how they were used:
I just realized that this game applies to the easy jam! It's more of a musical story journey so there's technically no win or loose state.

While the game takes place in a looping track, the idea is that it's the song the little boy is playing on the piano from the start to the end. So in theory, the game would be within one piece of music.

Super cool game! One of my favourites of the ones I've seen so far :)

Awesome work!

Developer

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I wanted to try to double out the theme with the story line and also going back and forth between crystals. I hope that it was enjoyable to play.

This game is a masterpiece made in a week.  Great job on the game everything is super polished and well thought out.  I think the only change I would want is the movement binding to the arrow keys instead, because it felt more natural having my left on on 1-5 and my right on the arrow keys instead of switching between.   Great work, I would love for you to play my game aswell.

So nice. I really enoyed it. I was so satisfying getting the correct sequence of notes after endless attempts of trying. Great concept and the opening scene was beautiful. very well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm really glad that you liked that concept  of trial and error. It honestly helps to contribute to the  story of the boy learning how to become a pianist and composer, which was completely intentional. Also I'm glad you liked the opening scene, because I spent the first two days trying to get that right, since it really is a super important part of the game.

you nailed it. It was great.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I also thought that the little bit of rush of getting a note right was a fun mechanic, which is why this stuck out to me in the beginning of development. Those little quotes are also there to give the player a little something as a reward for getting the puzzles right. Overall, I appreciate you playing the game and enjoying it!

This game is great.  I like the core mechanic of the game a lot.  I am a pianist myself and a middle school music teacher.  You should check out my game in the jam, I made a game where you go back in time and have to type musical vocab to play an organ and guitar solo.  Love the idea of the musical locks, it was really cool!  Also great music and graphics.

Developer

Hey, I'm glad you liked the game! I'm hoping to make it into a full thing eventually, but it depends on  if I can figure out what other mechanics to add, and how to go about adding them. I'm glad that you liked the game though! I wanted to create a game where I could lean into my strength.

Also I did play your game and leave a rating and comment so you can check that out if you want.

As I musician (violinist and play some piano) I enjoyed a lot playing the game. Liked the concept so much, this is exactly how i feel when i play: transported into the clouds, into another world, it's beautiful.

The background music was beautiful too.

Great job! 5/5 !

I'd love to know what do you think of my game!!

Submitted(+1)

It's awesome the way you worked the concept so well, and really well done on the music! So creative!

Submitted(+1)

Amazing music, a really unique concept, and with really great art with better animations. The only reason I stopped playing is because I honestly started having flashbacks to band class again.

Feel free to also check out our game and spread the reviewing love!

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I'm curious as to how far you got in the game. How many of the  sheet musics did you collect, because there are only 12 in the game. Also   I'll have to actually rate your game because I played it right when the jam ended before submissions were open. :)

Submitted

I think I got to the 5 or 6 page before I really had troubles to playing the notes by ear.  Also that sounds good!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, this was an excellent game! The music and graphics were great and I found the gameplay to be unique and fun.

Developer

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! I'm glad that you liked both the music and graphics. I tried really hard to center the game around the music so I'm glad that you liked it. I'm also glad you liked the visuals because that was the hardest thing for me.

Developer

For those of you who have played so far, I'm curious, how long did it take you?

Submitted

Hard to say, I think I had to go back twice because I forgot the tune on the way ;D so maybe a bit under 10mins?

Submitted(+1)

This was an amazing experience! What a different approach to the game jam, well done.

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad that you liked  the  experience. I really wanted to take the theme in a completely different way, and I hope you got it!

As a music lover myself I was so happy to see this game! Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank You! I'm really glad I actually pulled through and finished it now.

Well done! Music is amazing and I love the idea behind the game. The game feels really polished, especially for a week.

I had a bit of trouble matching the notes sometimes but was able to eventually figure it out. As you said below though, I think giving an option to make the keys at the bottom to light up could make the game more accessible (similar to Ocarina of Time's ocarina mechanic).

Another very minor nitpick is I wish I could move after pressing the note. Maybe I'm a bit impatient but a part of me wanted to start immediately running towards the platform after pressing the music diamond thing instead of having to sit and wait. This might just be me though!

Super impressive work!

Developer

Thank you! Yeah, I really wanted to add the ability to move away from the crystal once you listened to the pattern. I just had to do with a programming issue I ran into and I had to create a workaround. However, even so, I still would have put a spatial 2d audio in so that way the sound got more quiet as you walked away.

I'm really glad that you liked the Music and overall plot. That's really what I was riding on to help improve other areas of the game, so I'm glad you liked that!

This game is  very good and would spend a lot of time in it. I love it because it i just so relaxing witch most games are the opposite. Only issue is maybe other people might have an issue matching notes but i didn't find problem with it.

Developer

Hey thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I wanted to try to go for a more relaxing game since I was also trying to encompass the theme from the Easy Jam of making a game where you can't loose. I'm glad that you liked the relaxing feel, and I hope the music track helped to contribute to most of that. I focused a lot of time on making it feel relaxing and fitting the art style!

Submitted(+1)

this game are awesome but you need to make the music value lower while listen to the notes.

and play my game if you can!

Developer(+1)

Oh yeah for sure. I totally ment to do this before submitting the game but I completely overlooked it. I've even have some people who have perfect pitch play and struggle. I'll definitely keep that in mind though if I come back to working on this idea in the future!

Also don't worry! I'm gonna try to play the games for everyone who has responded for sure. I will obviously play other games, but I will try my best to play people who have gotten to mine first in appreciation!

Submitted(+1)

I loved the concept and visual of it. My only complaint is I guess I have no musical talent cause I found it hard to match the notes. So maybe a visual of some kind. Loved it tho :D

Developer

Hey, thanks for the feedback! I'm kind of beating myself up for not doing that because I had  my friend test it and they  suggested that as well. If I every come back to this game, I will likely wire the Music  Crystals to the keyboard on the bottom so you can easily see which notes are flashing and the player could also choose to memorize the number combinations. I'm glad that some of you had the problem as well though and are pointing it out, because it shows me where I should have focused a bit more for next time!

Submitted(+1)

Yea I loved the idea and noticed people musically inclined were able to do it so I felt dumb lol XD

Developer

Don't worry about it at all! I had two people playtest it who really struggled as well. Even some of the more musical people here struggled because some of the intervals are pretty difficult. That being said, I appreciate that you still played and enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

This was amazing! Especially as a musician I really liked the piano playing mechanics and it was super fun to listen and play back melodies. I loved how you went back to the piano at the end, which really fit with the theme! Awesome job, it was great

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I really enjoy hearing the feedback from everybody, but it's cool to see how other musicians interact with it. I'm really glad that you enjoyed the game, and I hope you liked the little musical journey I created. I'm excited to play your game now!

Submitted(+1)

Great opening animation! peeked my interest right away. the game play was also very fun  with the musical hearing practice. The art was also very cute and matched the style. You pretty much hit it out of the park with the art and audio. The story that is there is also very nice and it is clear you put your heart into this game! Great great work!  It would mean a lot if you could check out my Jam submission if you get the chance. Thanks!

Developer

Thank you so much! I'm actually super happy that you like the art, because I was trying to create a music based game with a nice little story to distract from my lack of art abilities. I really appreciate that though!  I also did spend so much time on that single track, because I wanted it to sound beautiful but also simple enough that it was convincing that the little boy was playing. All and all, I really appreciate it a lot!

I will for sure check out your game by the way!

I thought this game was great! As a musical person myself, I appreciated the ear training practice. I haven't done that in a while. I thought the platforming was good too. Snappy controls and I liked the double jump. The only thing I would suggest is, I found the background music a bit distracting when I was trying to listen to and play the notes back. It might have helped to lower the music during those actions, or make background music thats more ambient or something. Thoroughly enjoyed your game. I made it to the end. Good job!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. Yeah, I was going to lower the music but than completely forgot to at the last minute because I knew it was too loud. I'm hoping that doesn't cause too much difficulty for some, but I hope the other parts of the game help it out.

Also, I was gonna have three different areas with different piano tracks to show the emotional journey a bit more but I  just ran out of time. I hope I can add that if I ever come back to this idea in the future.
