The presentation of the game is quite strong! Your art is great, and the idea is neat.

I did not learn that the direction the icon on the dice is facing affects the direction the attack/arrow/spell is facing until I couldn't hit an enemy in level 4 for about 20 turns. It took another 20 to finally get an attack roll that faced the right direction. It might be helpful to align the dice to the cardinal directions after they finish rolling to better indicate which direction diagonals are actually facing, or to show where attacks go on the board to better show what's happening. There's some feedback improvements you could make for sure.

I found it quite difficult to use any manner of strategy either, especially once I gained and promptly lost a wizard: the fireball/iceball spells stuck around and filled my rolls with unusable options.

There's some cool potential here for sure, but I don't feel the dice roll system is currently intelligent/forgiving enough to keep the spark for me .

Developer

What made you think that the rotation of the dice is somehow important? We're honestly very curious. We are stunned.

Both the enemy units and player units perform attacks on the Y axis(enemies attack down, players attack up) The only exception are archers that can attack any unit on the map.

You can right click on all dices and enemies to learn about what does what. That is stated right in the beginning of the game in the splash screens/tutorial. (Also you can learn how attacks work by looking at how enemies attack you)

As for the 'useless' dice, the decision of leaving dice in the pool of options after the unit's death is intentional

One of the best games ! I liked everything but i don't feel like i experienced the curse a lot. Or maybe it's not noticable or un-avoidable enough.

Submitted

OK, now that's a really great game! I think that it has a lot of potential. The mechanics are awesome. I liked the grid nature battle. Well done for making such a good game in a short amount of time.

Interesting take on the theme! I made it to level 4. The game is quite heavy on the RNG, while I would prefer the strategy element to come more into play. Perhaps you can change it so that you always get one dice for movement, attack, etc. Instead of competely random.

Developer

We thought about that. But the game became too easy to play. And it's not as RNG heavy as you think. There's an algorithm that generates what dice you get, it's not 100% random. Sure the dice rolls feel random and your perks feel random, but you don't need any more control to have fun with the game. Infact, the more we removed control, the more fun the game became.

It's a very simple concept for a strategy and there's not much depth to it. If you remove the randomness, the game would feel very simple and boring.

Thank you for your comment

Submitted

I'm not suggesting to remove the RNG. After all, that's the foundation of the game. I would just like it to be smarter/context aware. For example, at the end of my playthrough I was down to one archer and I kept getting movement dice and attacks for wizards and knights. That was quite annoying.

Oh man, this has a whole lot of potential. If I could make a few suggestions, one would be to allow the player to pick more than one dice (Maybe two or three). Also, maybe make the enemies completely predictable (like in Slay the Spire or Into the Breach). Lastly, consider making all of the dice faces do something deterministic instead of making it random. With those three changes, I could see this game becoming a serious strategy game. As of now, it's a little too random, but if you make it so that the player has a clear set of decisions to make, it would be incredible. Great job. Looks amazing. Plays amazing. Dice are fun. Awesome.

Whoa super cool game! I really liked how the dice decisions matter a lot more the further you play, perfect pacing and really fun!

Hey ! I just finished my queue ratings finally =D I tried your game, it's fantastic ! The idea is original, the art, the sfx are on point and the game feels great as a whole. Well done !
The dices are such a cool mechanic and the way they roll with the icons on them reminds me some boardgames or videogames/anime from the 2000's probably but can't pinpoint it again... This to say, it felt nostalgic x). Another thing, the tutorial is engaging and the way you explained everything ingame is nice of you and your team. Definitely helps.
The big hand is funny to use too.

Thanks !

I really enjoyed your game - its super fun ! this game is very different from other games, it requires tactics.
It feels like there is so much more to explore in this game., more depth, but I died on lvl 5 or 6, because I lost my warrior and there was no more hope..
- Characters are very unique, well stylized and funny! really good presentation
- very original
- Overall 5 stars !
only one thing I would like to suggest is maybe to add occasional possibility to choose which characters to hire after death, so I could get my warrior back
PS: the dice sounds is warm and authentic (I am boardgames fun)

Definitely a 5/5 for the originality! I love that the dices are actually thrown, its a perfect polish for the game. I think it has some great potential to become a successful game. Great job!

Your game is frankly amazing. Everything fits together so well, the art and the game-play perfectly mesh. The art is fantastic! The game has massive potential for exploration and further development.  For a team of four, this game is super polished and clean.

I'd love to see you continue to build on the game when the jam is gone. Showing the amount of curses I have would be nice. Maybe adding special tiles that have treasure to encourage lucky movement. Being able to pick my team entirely would be nice too. I could see a fun game mode where you pick a number of characters, their health roles over into the next level and you just see how far you can get. Maybe some sort of local multiplayer could be fun to.

I only encountered one  problem. The text would occasionally be to large for buttons in-between rounds and could stick off the ends.

Overall amazing game and I hope it appears in Mark's video. I will be replaying and hope you add more content in the future.

The art of this game is amazing :)

Thoroughly enjoyed the game, took me a few tries to fully understand it but once I understood it was surprisingly tactic-y and addictive. Had a few unexpected crashes

Developer

Yeah, sorry about that. We're working on fixing those :)

Submitted

Looks very nice! However it crashed on my doing the dual sword attack on someone and it wasn't clear which directions were possible. I sort of soft locked myself by only having the knight in the top row being blocked by the wizard, so I couldn't really move into a good position to attack.

If the kinks were ironed out it would be great!

Developer

Kinks?? What are kinks

We're working on fixing the bugs, Sorry about the crashes. It's a very sneaky bug and happens very rarely.

The mechanic is actually very clever. I really like the mechanic that give you choices but there are too many useless choices so the the game get from making strategic choices to just roll the dice to win. I found  myself spamming for the desired choice and you can't die as well so it gets boring. I do however like the art style a lot. I got the Katamari but in a fantasy setting and not being out of place.

Developer

What do you mean "you can't die" ? :D What king of build did you have and how far did you go?

Most people die on level 6-10

I also don't understand "..I found  myself spamming for the desired choice.."  This might work on level 1 or 2 but later there are a lot more enemies and specifically enemy archers. Of course on something like level 1 with enemies that don't really go out of their way to hurt you, you can wait for an "arrow" dice and just shoot the remaining enemies, but on further levels you'll get shot by archers and enemies will hunt your units down. This strategy will not work

This game is about making moment-to-moment decisions there are just as many useful dice as there are useless. The further you go, the more important every choice gets, because the playing field becomes larger and the enemy army grows and becomes stronger!

Seems like you didn't get very far.

Developer (1 edit)

We're working on an updated version of the game and we will release it post jam. We're doing a lot of rebalancing and bugfixing. Better dice rolls, better enemy AI...

Sorry if you didn't like the game, we're working to mak it better

Submitted

Sorry if I sounded too harsh. In fact i really like the game where the challenge is to work with what the game gives you, and there are possibly tons of choices to make. And I know balancing a strategy game is hard especially with heavy emphasis on rolling dice. One way I can think of is to limit the number of same type of outcome that can appear. That way you wont be getting four movement when you need to attack somehow. But then again the theme is Out of Control so it is up to you to balance control and randomness. Looking forward to your updates!

That was a bad review on my part. I am sorry. I actually rated you a pretty high score. Keep up your good work!

I really liked the game! despite the randomness of the dice there was always a way to make some sort of strategy. It has a really nice tutorial, especially when it comes to  a GameJam  game, and being able to buy different characters or level up characters you already have was fun!

I also like the concept and think it's pretty original! The graphics were lovely, the music was nice, and the coding was done very well! I think everyone who worked on this game did an amazing job at being creative with the theme, and making a really fun game. :)

Pretty neat idea and well executed mechanics. Good job!

Played your game, was quite fun :)

Thank you for the lets' play.

Your guys can only attack forward on Y axis. We now realise the maybe we should've clarified that in the tutorial. We also think that we should add horizontal attacks and backwards attacks. (not as a separate action, just an improvement to thie default attack)

You didn't really get to the part where the game REALLY gets out of control, eventually on level 8-11 the enemies get very powerful and they start to outnumber you. It's a shame that you didn't get to that part but I guess you get the point of the game. It has a lot of replay value, so you might want to go for another run after we update it post jam :)

thank you!

Awesome, I will definetly try it out again after the ratings period ;)

When the game said I could right click on things and get more information, I knew it was going to be a good game. It doesn't hold the player's hand, but it makes sure that the player has all of the information that they need to be successful, and I like that a lot. One thing I didn't like was the dice that didn't always do what they said they did, like swapping characters. I get that it adds some rng, but you already have that with the dice roll and the inability to control which characters swap with other characters. For a game about strategy, it felt frustrating when my decisions were meaningless. Other than that though, really great game. I had a lot of fun playing it.

Developer (1 edit)

That's a bug that I was aware of but didn't have time to fix. What is actually happening is, the hero tries to swap places with itself and stays in place, and also, sometimes when 2 heroes swap, the first swaps with the second and than the second swaps with the first... so they stay where they started. When you right click on the dice, it says "Swap all characters... sometimes???". Now it's fixed.

I think all other dice work as the game says. Please let us know if we missed some bugs

Thank you for your review!

Wow that's a pretty much complete experience for a jam game. Really nice, and YES quick and simple tutorials on the beginning :D

Submitted

A really fun idea that already has a good risk reward system and I could easily sink a lot of time into it already. The only think I think would be useful is more information about what the enemies can do or might do next turn so you can be a bit more strategic. But I would love to see a full version of this game really well done
