Nothing but a huge HTML/ITCH.IO error popup for me. Firefox 138.0.4 (64-bit). on Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS

Developer(+1)

Yeah I saw someone mention that it doesn't work on firefox. Works on chrome. Sorry it didn't run for you!

Beautiful game! I just couldn't stop until I saw all the butterflies and plants! My favorite is the one from the hanging plant - such grace and elegance! Loved the game! But I wonder - is this a clicker or an idle game? Either way, I liked it a lot!

Developer(+1)

haha good question. I meant for it to be a clicker, but I have to admit that I don't play that many. A friend playtested the game for me during the jam and told me that the best part of a clicker is when you buy the upgrade that makes it so you don't have to click all the time. So we changed it to have butterflies passively generate points (plus you can sell them and sell the hybrids for lots of points) So glad you liked the bugs! That's lovely to hear :)

Super cute little game that fits exceptionally well with the theme I think! I love these kind of idle "grow-your-own-little-thing" games, because you can play and engage with them on your own time :-D

Submitted(+1)

The game is literally good , unique concept and hand fun playing , Good job!

The game crashed on firefox. Managed to play it using chrome. Anyway a very cute and lovely game. Having the hybrids is a very nice touch. I would prefer less clicking but it was worth it at the end when I have a beautiful terrarium (didn’t know that was a word!). Here’s the error if it is of any help:

I got pretty far! I loved this and loved the breeding mechanic to make hybrids and make it more interesting! It became a lot to manage, but at the same time, it was awesome! I would love for there to be a way to both right and left click since this is kinda a cookie clicker type game. I wish they would stop eating my plants!

One bigger piece of feedback - at the beginning, sometimes it was easy to click on moths, sometimes it was hard, sometimes it started easy, but got hard, so I'm not sure what was going on, but other than that, no problems!

..unless you count the lag spike for having more moths than I should... super fun and would love to see more!

Lovely game, very in keeping with the theme. I made a Ton of butterflies before I even realised I could sell those lol.. they absolutely decimated my plants even when I re bought them haha, good fun.

Like the art style a lot

What a lovely game!  Simple but satisfying, and the bug hybrids are a nice extra touch.  Chill music and SFX that adds to the atmosphere and isn't annoying or out of place.  And the moth designs are beautiful--it was fun to hatch a new one and see what it looked like!

I guess the only critique I can think of is that it wasn't clear if clicking on the eggs was making them hatch any faster?  I think clicking on the worms was helping them turn into moths faster, but I might have been making things up.

The Windows version took a little while to shut down which might mean there's some significant memory overhead there as well.  It shut down fine after a few seconds though.

Great work all around!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for the kind feedback! Yeah I'm totally stumped with the memory issue. I've been trying to pinpoint its source but have had no luck. All objects in the game are created in object pools at the start, and any getComponent calls are handled when populating the pools, then stored in dictionaries. I do have a lot of dictionaries to store everything, but once everything gets created at the start it's only at 2% of the memory capacity on web. So I'm totally lost as to what is suddenly eating up so much memory late into the game. But thank you so much for playing!

*edit* also yes! sorry clicking eggs and caterpillars does make them hatch faster. I wish I'd had more time to really balance all those numbers though. Attempts at optimization ate up all those final days.

A memory issue is probably happening during runtime, creating or saving things that aren't getting cleaned up automatically.  Your initial data structures are probably fine, and there aren't THAT many moths being created through the course of the game.  Is it possible that the clicking particle effect or something to do with adding store currency is creating objects that aren't destroyed?  Those are the only things I can think of that happen at a big enough of a scale to cause an issue.  Or maybe something meant to manage the creation of hybrid moths?

Love seeing another Maya Carter jam entry, really cute chill game... although I did turn it into a clicker game to try get everything as quickly as possible, got everything before the browser memory issue though so can't complain 😂

Developer(+1)

Thanks! This was a very different kind of submission for me as I was the dev here (usually I'm just on art and wiring up a couple systems) and my cousin did the art. I tried to be really thoughtful about optimization from the start (object pools, event system, caching all components in dictionaries so I never need to call getComponent in game) but alas... I could not figure out how to resolve this weird memory bug! Very sad because it comes just as you start to really get into hybrid bugs.

I did originally design this to revolve around clicking, but a good friend gave me feedback to put in more ways to passively gain points. I'm glad I was able to get that into the game, at least! So if you like clicking, by all means haha :D but it's also possible to sit back and watch your bugs make points for you, breeding hybrid bugs and selling them for the big bucks. Well, it would be possible. If the game didn't crash x)

Big Maya Carter fan! Cool to see a you on the coding side for this project. I liked this project. I feel bad for my mouse with all the clicking games this game jam lol. I didn't understand that the bugs gave you points until near the end. I like insta sold them as soon as I got them so I think I definitely could've gotten to the end a little faster. Enjoyed it felt a little few stuff didn't feel as polished as the rest of the project. The UI but I liked it aesthetically with what was there :)

Loved this a whole lot!

A really nice, relaxing game. I like the introduction to the mechanics. I also really liked the anticipation of seeing what would emerge from the eggs - that was a good incentive to keep playing. Great work!

Hello fellow terrarium enjoyer!

Love the aesthetic, I couldn't keep all  my plants alive. I must become stronger! Q.Q

P.S. We almost had the same game name haha

Submitted(+1)

Nice little game. I really enjoyed building my terrarium and filling it with plants. I could not figure out if I could move plants but other than that a solid game.

Well done.

Cute game! The Sims meets Bug life and the jam theme :).
A lot of work to maintain such. tiny world :D.

Great entry for the jam, well done team!

Excellent job! Cute vibes. My team was actually THIIIIIS close to making a similar type of game before we settled on our current game. I liked the particle effects and felt like the game had pretty good UX overall. The economy seemed well balanced too. The Bug art was top notch - seeing what kind of butterfly would emerge was a big motivator to keep playing!

Submitted(+1)

another delightful entry. the art gene seems to run strong in your family. I could totally see this concept grow into a full cosy game like sims but in a terrarium - but I also enjoyed my peaceful 10 minutes of the game as it was right now.
extra shoutout to that background color, btw, what a delicious color.

oh, by the way, the game crashed on me after I bought all the plants and had lots and lots of bugs flying around.

Developer

thanks for playing! Yeah we see this crash happening only on the WebGL build and not in the editor where we did most of the testing, unfortunately. It's some kind of memory bug, but the weird thing is, up until it hits that error, the game is only using like 2% of the memory capacity. Then in an instant it goes to 100% and crashes. Tried desperately to fix it in the last hour of the jam, but alas... Could not pinpoint the issue.
