Really cool game - was fun racing against the AI to get my barrels and timing them properly. Super polished arcade style gameplay - really taps into what makes those games great!

Developer

Thanks so much! And it didn't even cost a pocket full of quarters to play!!

Great Game!  Enjoyed being on the other side of the barrels this time around!  The Graphics were very well done and overall its a familiar game design with a switch in roles.  Very good job on this project and i appreciate playing such a fantastic game!

Cool twist on donkey kong !
Was fun and challenging once I understood the bum to kill red ones. I didnt get what the bannas were for tho.

Cool game !

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing. If I could go back I think at the start of the second wave I would have sent out a lone red zookeeper and not started the wave again until the player took him out so hopefully they understood you have to bam the barrel into his jump. That's what's so great about feedback in game jams. You learn a ton. Thanks for sharing.

The yellow bananas increased your barrel armor, so one barrel could eventually take out three zookeepers before bursting. The sprite for the barrel even changes, but I don't think it's nearly noticeable enough. The green bananas reduce your recovery so you can press the action buttons quicker. Again, should communicate more clearly to the player. All great feedback and things to think through if I want to update or for future jams!

Classic idea done well, great job! I really appreciate the small details, like the day/night cycle and the flavored game over text. And of course the art is fantastic and a really good fit for this game. I'm also always appreciative of people who used the "My Own Noise" diversifier :) [I think technically this is a one-button game too?]

For constructive criticism, I definitely agree with the comment below about being able to use additional control schemes rather than clicking. I'd also add that I wish the BAM cooldown was desynced from the barrel- at a certain point the red zookeepers were unstoppable because you couldn't throw and bam them in time (only one or the other) and that doesn't feel great when you're stuck in a losing situation

Developer(+1)

Ever had a total facepalm moment? This right here:

I wish the BAM cooldown was desynced from the barrel ...

It's so obvious now! And simple. I just needed a different timer and variable for that action! And I agree it would make the game so much better. Thanks for playing and for the excellent feedback.

Hey, cool game, works well and is like an arcade coin machine game indeed.

While it is donkey kong -like game, it has it own nice spices on the playable banana split.

I would change the monkeys sounds to fix 8-bit theme, and then make the barrels more weighted and heavier on rolling. This could be playable on the mobile devices, while you can click the edges of the screen to roll barrels and by double tap to bam.

Good luck, this is a great Jam game. Hope to see it somewhere in the future. Don't make it to remind too much the Donkey Kong though (yeah, well... - lol)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing and enjoying the spicy banana split!

For some reason, itch.io isn't displaying your entry under your reply like the other commenters, but I see you entered. I'll check your game out and rate it today!

Super cool recreation of a donkey Kong game! I love all the copyright free versions of the characters and that you get to put an end to those dumb jump men. Excellent work!

Submitted(+1)

Game is cool and I really like how you have to"Bam" at the right times so the barrels hit the red guys. The game also looks great and the audio fits really well!

Monkey go BAM ! Very nice game ! Nice take on the theme !

I had fun playing it :)

Submitted(+1)

I really enjoyed it! I would recommend adding keyboard or gamepad controls, it felt intuitive to use the arrows and space bar. I liked the concept and how crisp is the screen shake.

Developer(+1)

I agree. I really should have implemented the keyboard ... it makes so much more sense. I could have had the right half of the keyboard trigger the right throw if you hit any button and the left side do the opposite, then save the spacebar for the BAM. It'd let the player stay focused on the zookeeper onslaught, but also mimic Chonky's actions.

I think I got tunnel-vision and was just so focused on making a mouse only game. I considered updating at the 11th hour, but focused on trying to optimize all exports instead. If I could go back I'd have switched it, but this is what jams are all about. Learning, sharing and growing with a great community. Thanks for being a part of it and for playing my game!

Submitted(+1)

First off, what a great response, thanks for taking feedback so politely. I'm looking forward for your feedback on my entry.

I like the idea of setting your own goals, like a mouse only game, and setup a jam within the jam. My personal challenge is to find a strong mechanic and try to explore it. I understand completely where are you coming from with the way you designed your game.

I really enjoyed it, it's perfect at this point to make it mobile.

Developer

Yeah, it's hard to know when to say no to an initial idea. That's a tough one for any developer I'd bet, and I'm pretty new to it! I'm calling it a night, but Hero's Edge will be my first play tomorrow!

Submitted(+1)

This is great!
The music is super chill, which is a nice balance against what becomes quite frenetic gameplay :) The art is gorgeous, and I appreciate that they're quick games.

This is the jam game I've replayed the most so far :)

Developer

Your last sentence made my jam! I had a great experience, but it meant a lot to read that. Thanks for sharing!

Submitted(+1)

I love the game, brings back good memories! It felt really good to lay as the boss. The game was very intuitive and the controls were really easy to pick up. The opponents were also really fun to play against since their actions were unpredictable. Good job!

Nice game! like the DK feel, nice idea to play as the boss, felt good to play overall. Nice job :D

I thought Chonky needs to step out to take the bananas, it turns out he only need to roll a barrel to them.

It was fun and tricky :)

Developer

Thank you for playing! A couple days away from it and now I think I could have made more risk/reward with the items. Maybe not leaving the platform, but having  the player lose them over time, so you have to keep watching for them and making the choice to hit the zookeepers or not. RIght now once you're fully powered up, you can sort of cheese barrels like crazy.

Thanks for your feedback.

great idea to reverse the roles of the original Donkey Kong. Love the death animation :P

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much and I'm grateful you took the time to play. I missed the first weekend, but I couldn't get the idea of being the original DK out of my head. I love the way this jam is structured. I figured if I kept it to a single room, I could finish in time ... barely!

This is a big shame, I can't open it on Mac I just get "Unable to find game!!:" prompt. It looks very good regardless

Developer

Yeah, it was a bummer of a discovery! I submitted early and when I went to record some gameplay to pull screenshots on a different Mac the build wouldn't run. Exported again as a dmg ... played fine on the machine, but not on any other Macs. I tried tracking down the Xcode and cert issue, but it was too close to the deadline by then. I'm glad at least the Windows build and the HTML version runs, even if you can't go fullscreen in browser.

Thanks for trying!

Submitted

I feel your pain - I tried the HTML version and found it such a fun game, unfortunately the game only plays in a restricted canvas instead of full-screen so I didn't get to appreciate the graphics up and close. You did a good job.

Chonky Bam is barrels of fun! There’s an addicting quality to throwing barrels at mad zookeepers trying to put Chonky back into captivity. I’m just not quite sure what that quality is because I don’t think I used any real skill while playing the game.

I would just toss as many barrels as I could, usually alternating from side to side, hoping I would send a zookeeper into oblivion. That seemed to work for a a period of time, but once the sky changed about three times I would get flooded by red zookeepers. The green zookeepers didn’t pose any real problems (maybe paying tribute to the skills of the green plumber that came before him) but the red zookeepers would often kill me before I could get the timing of bam down.  Luckily my strategy of throwing random barrels worked for cheesing the red zookeepers because they can’t jump right after they get off of a ladder, and I often had enough barrels on screen to hit them on one of the ladder exits.

Whenever I did nail a bam, it felt great. There would be moments with multiple red zookeepers and barrels on screen and the bam would take about five of them out. When you get into that sort of flow the game really shines. I just felt like when I did have those moments, I was there based more off of luck than skill.

The music and sfx are great  but I couldn’t hear them too well on my computer speakers. I did love hearing Chonky say bam and banana every time though!

Chonky has strong yet innocent look to him that definitely kept me rooting for him to escape captivity.

I’m still not sure whether I did well or not but something about this game keeps pulling me in. It’s easy enough to jump right into, but challenging enough to keep you itching to beat your own high score. There really is nothing more satisfying than seeing five red zookeepers get taken out by one bam and getting Chonky that much closer to freedom.

Developer

Excellent feedback. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this. You're right about the overall volume. I think I was scared off because on my last jam game I only had a single track and I had it way too loud.

With the time to reflect away from the game, I could have made a more engaging challenge by tweaking the enemy spawns and making it so that you lost the power-ups over time, but they kept spawning back in randomly, so you'd always be on the lookout and have to make a conscious decision to either take out the zookeeper or get past them to make it to the banana power up.

Congrats on the current world record score! Thanks for sharing, even if you knocked poor ol' Luigi! Cheap shot. He can jump higher!! Even if he is a doofus.

Cool spin on a classic game!  Loved his sound effects and I also had a chuckle with the "live in captivity forever" button.  Well done!

Developer

Thanks so much, Omniclause! I scrambled to record all the sfx with stuff around the house Sunday night. My first time doing my own sound. Glad you enjoyed it and I realized how cruel the captivity button is since there's no end game, just a high-score ... poor Chonk is doomed to the will of those zookeepers.
