In what way does your game fit the theme?
We wanted to think outside of "two-gether," and instead combine all 26 letters of the alphabet together... because letters only have a greater meaning together than when they're apart: from A to Z, or i and ü. :)

We also wanted to challenge ourselves with our own secondary "theme": introduce a new mechanic, one that seamlessly combines story and gameplay together... to change the meaning of things, and find love <3.

Did you write all the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yup! Everything's from nothing to something on our own (2 people), including music + art

Oh my... this is basically a love letter, what a beautiful game :')

I (heart) it so much, I think its already one of my favs (inside and outside the jam) Its so emotional, the way you managed to write the narrative is gorgeous, and the music makes my heart feel so warm <3

You both made me remember that games are more than just moving a character around, they are about what the whole experience means for the user, just like every other art form <3

I just cant express how perfect and beautiful this game is, thank you so mcuh for making it <3

Developer(+1)

Aww this is such a kind comment! We smiled from reading this one. :)

A love letter indeed! And I'm so happy to hear that this game was a great experience for you and touched you, that's probably the best thing any creator can hear! In the end, we wanted to do that through combining our story & gameplay, and I'm glad you were positively moved by it. :)

And I hope you continue growing and developing your game as well! It's always nice to know there's awesome people out there like you within our community. <3

Loved the game, the really nice piano soundtrack was my favorite part of the game (I love writing music like that myself too!).

It really reminded me of Baba is You (especially the later parts of that game where you have to assemble rule words out of individual letters), which is probably my favorite puzzle game of all time.

Couldn't get past level 4 as I may have managed to bug the game (couldn't work out how to break the bricks, tried what worked in the previous level and spawned no object.)

Like other people said, I can understand why they might have had issues with the controls, but I did not find them "unplayably bad", maybe took a couple of minutes to get used to that's all. I am really happy you implemented the swap with letter mechanic as a nice QOL thing, made the game way less annoying than it could have been.

Definitely would "love" to see this continued (get the pun? :P )!

Thanks so much for playing!! :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the music, I appreciated the music in your game too!

I'm honoured to hear it reminds you of Baba is You!

Sorry to hear about Level 4 -- that's strange. There's always the restart button (P), since we may have missed a small bug due to having to code & design the mechanic from scratch. Though we also understand starting over the level is quite a lot to do again lol, so we appreciate you going that far still into the game :)

We'll be working on smoothening the control scheme even more -- we had a solution during development but ran out of time unfortunately to fully implement it :( since we wanted to flesh out the new core mechanics for people to experiment with.

I "love" (or should I say, "heart") your pun as well. <3

Thanks for playing, and I hope you continue growing & developing your game too!!

Thanks for playing!! And yeah, that is indeed the correct pronunciation for the umlaut u / ü. :)

I know a little German, but we can pretend it's still pronounced "you". 😉

This was a lovely experience
The music is very simple, but fits perfectly with the tone. It's specially nice to know it was made by yourselves
Likewise, the gameplay becomes very intuitive after the first 2 levels and the difficulty increases at a good pace

Like some people said, you need to get used to the controls, but it didn't bother me too much
Something small I would've liked is to have a button to manually continue to the next level, since the phrases went by before I had a chance to read them whole

Nice job overall
A lot of effort went into this and it shows 👌💕

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing!! :)

I'm glad you found the experience to be lovely, and that you enjoyed the music (I focused on a more closer, personal feel / emotions of the music instead of an orchestral-like production complexity when composing these, yup!), and also glad that the game design allowed your gameplay to go smoothly!

Yup, we're focusing on smoothening out movement controls for our next updates as we focused on fleshing out the new core mechanics and ran out of time to implement our solution for movement. We'll add the button for scene transitions as well, as I agree it would improve the experience even more -- we just ran out of time since showcasing the level design & new mechanics were our primary focus for the jam.

Thanks again!! <3

Submitted(+1)

Very pretty visuals and wholesome concept. I take issue with the controls, though, as they are very clunky and annoying to use.

Developer (4 edits)

Thanks so much for playing! :)

I'm sorry to hear about the controls -- we set it up to allow for turning (for interactions) and careful movement for the player on the gri system; we had a better solution to smoothen the movement even more, though ran out of time unfortunately to fully implement it as we focused on ensuring the core mechanic was fully fleshed out for everyone to explore; it is our first priority for our future updates!

Thanks again. <3

Submitted(+1)

Awesome puzzle idea! Those move mechanics sure are a pain though. I also preferred the simplistic levels, and think it would be nice if the trouble were move of finding out what to break and spell as opposed to how to get them everywhere. I honestly saw the last level and just couldn't attempt it.

Developer (5 edits)

Thanks so much for playing!

I agree the movement can be improved -- we ran out of time focusing on perfecting the core mechanic unfortunately. :(

We're working on that as our first priority and expanding levels to allow for a smoother progression, as we did quickly set up the last level to experiment with & test the limits of our new game mechanics (maybe by a bit too much!) We're glad you were able to get up to the second-to-last level and figure out the core mechanics nonetheless, as the last level is better for those those intrigued by the mechanics and want to finish the cute story. :)

Thanks again. <3

It took me way more time than I'd like to admit to figure this out, but overall, amazing concept. Lovely story and music. Nice job!

Thanks so much for playing Mayra!

And I checked out your portfolio, you have lovely music! So glad to see another music person, we definitely need more music people in this community haha.

Thanks again, and I hope you continue to grow & develop your great game as well. <3

Really nice game, it's relaxing but require you to think. I really like the idea of your game, and graphic, and music. :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing our game! I'm glad it was a relaxing experience and that you enjoyed it. :)

The music was fun to compose too! I'm glad you enjoyed that. <3

Lovely game, like Baba is you :)

The sound is good, gameplay also.

My one complain would be you end up having a hurt hand after a few level by walking all the way from a place to another, again and again, to search letters and form words. But I don't know how to fix that...

Oh and I am glad not all words were working, I would have ended up with weird red and purple butts (might have been funny though).

Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing! And haha, I formed a couple of Red and Purple "Butts" too when I first played it. :)

I agree with you on the keyboard controls! We had a solution during development but ran out of time in the 7 days unfortunately. :( It's what we're priotising for future releases!

And I'm honoured that it reminded you of Baba is You! We love that game. <3

Love the idea, would like to see more of this.

This game is ❤️ touching

Aww, thanks so much for playing ❤️

Great idea I too got "the ham moment" lol. Would love to be able to just hold a direction tho instead of mashing my keyboard.

Developer

Thanks so much for playing our game! And LOL I'm so glad you got the Ham moment.

I agree with you on the keyboard controls! We're going to work on that now that we have time and we're not constrained by the jam's 7 days >.<

Submitted(+1)

Really beautiful game, surprisingly emotional. I thought it was a good spin on the idea behind baba is you. Was funny trying to write hammer and suddenly having a ham appear. I don't have any constructive criticism to give that hasn't been given by other commenters. Good work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing! :)

And I'm glad you got the Ham moment LOL, definitely a favourite of ours too.

Solid puzzle game, with fun word play!

Fun:

This deserved a solid score since the unique mechanic of building words to solve puzzles was fun. I know you only had a week to build this, but I think if you implemented more possible solutions to the puzzles then you could really have fun with the mechanic.

Innovation/Theme:

Another solid aspect. You combine letters, which on their own are useless, but together become useful tools. The main word building mechanic was unique which carries over into the theme very smoothly.  Only thing I could say about the innovation aspect, is there has been recent games with similar concepts such as baba is you. It's still a fresh idea of how you use the mechanic though.

Graphics:

The graphics were very cute and simple. You had a nice squiggle/wiggle effect on all the objects. The background was always a flat black, which generally made the levels feel empty. Don't take this as a negative, but all the art gave me the impression that it was made quickly in MS paint. If you are looking for breath taking graphics, this is not the game for that. This game sticks with a style and uses it well and stays consistent.

Audio:

The music was very pleasant and it changed for each level. The music reminded me of the 1950's lovey dovey diner scene you'd see in a movie. It worked very well for the game and didn't drone on. The only thing I can say here is even though the music worked well and fit the game, it wasn't entirely memorable to me. There was no hook to it that made me want to hum it my daily life. But still a solid experience!

Game Design:

To me, this is the most important category. This is taking every category here and combining them into a end product. You took a fun and unique concept of combining letters to make words that turned into usable tools/objects all with a simplistic art style that still stood out on it's own, with an atmosphere created by a decent story and music that added volume.  The only major drawbacks to this game was the slightly clunky movement. Maybe being able to hold down a key for continuous movement would have helped here, and also the generic black background became a little overwhelming staring at for a bit. The puzzles were very solid and all had a solution, just a strict solution, which once you got the gist of how the game worked, it made the rest of the puzzles feel a little too easy. I think utilization of multiple solutions via different words built could have really improved the game, but in all honesty the time restraint of a week restricted this area. What you created was strong all around and a fun experience!

I streamed the game here:

Developer (13 edits) (+1)

Wow! Thanks so much for playing our game, and watching you play the game on the YouTube video brought a big smile. :) It was nice to see other lovely games in the jam we also enjoyed get screen time on stream!

We're glad the puzzles were easier for you to solve! That was definitely a game design aspect we were trying to make sure to clarify for the player. We were hoping to ramp up more challenge as the game progressed, but couldn't fit in as many levels before the jam ended unfortunately. :( Similarly the clunky movement is something we 100% agree with -- we ran out of time on that unfortunately and couldn't implement our solution on time. : (((

Yes, we love Baba is You and its programming-like/logic mechanics! We actually started with the game mechanic of Anagram games, and we thought taking the broader genre of Sokoban-esque games and Text-based games and combining it into something completely new that subverts expectations (e.g., breaking your environment, redefining what the purpose of objects around you are) in an open-ended manner using 26 letters.

We also thought about creating multiple solutions like you said (a real problem-solving feeling), though also ran out of time to open our scope that wide too. We implemented several multiple-solution levels, but decided to remove it due to time constraints to focus on our primary mechanic. Lots of things were hit hard due to time, but I think we all were anyway! It was clever of you to think of BIRD instead of BRIDGE. :)

I'm also happy you enjoyed the background music! The 50s vibe actually is spot-on, the chord progressions we used are classic Doo-wop chords straight from the fifties. :) Striking the balance between an overdominating melody (that distracts from the gameplay) versus a fitting ambient/background music was an interesting challenge -- feel free to check out this more melody-heavy composition I wrote, maybe it's catchier lol

And I saw a comment about the wiggly sprites! Yup the "art" is all MS Paint lol, I had to hand-draw everything multiple times (and don't get me started on the the bricks and all those squares & lines -- oh my! haha). We're a team of 2 students, and I can't say we're anywhere close to artists, maybe doodlers at best :) We've been speaking with a friend who's an artist to start working on better art for the future.

Thanks again for the feedback as we love to hear new ideas as we continue making future versions, and we really enjoyed playing your game! We hope you continue developing & growing your game as well. <3

I really did enjoy your game! I hope you guys further expand the idea. And for the art, I do enjoy it, but it might help just to even get input from an artist. There are loads of artist in these jams typically, so try to network and talk with them!

Developer(+1)

I agree! We are newbies to game development lol, but it's so awesome to see how nice the community is here! :)

Submitted(+1)

Wow, what a cute game, I really enjoyed it! Excellent design all around, calling back to previous solutions to help guide the player in later puzzles was very clever. I never felt like I was being handheld, figuring out the puzzles was very intuitive. The art and audio are also very lovely :).

My only complaint would be what others have mentioned on the movement. It's not a dealbreaker by any means, and this game is very well designed in every other aspect. It just felt like I was pressing buttons way more than I needed to and made my hand a bit tired.

What a great entry, I hope you work on it more after the jam!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks so much for playing!! I'm glad you enjoyed the puzzles and the hand-drawn art + composed music :)

I totally agree with you on the movement -- we had solutions to improve it but ran out of time unfortunately :( Its' on our checklist for future versions.

I hope you continue developing your amazing game too!! <3

Submitted(+1)

I look forward to seeing what you all do with it! And thanks for the compliment :)

Submitted(+1)

Great game! Super creative to the theme & the atmosphere you set up with the art style, backstory, and sounds/music are perfect!

My only critique is while I do like the movement style, I don't think you need the directional arrow. It would avoid a lot of unnecessary double clicking on the keys (which you already do a lot of anyways just to move around.) Otherwise, really great game!

I'd appreciate it if you could play/rate my game as well! :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much for playing!! I'm glad you enjoyed our little game. :)

I agree with you on the movement, we wanted to smoothen it but ran out of time unfortunately :( We'll be working on that for our next version!

I'll add your game to my list for today! <3
