Funny (and cursed) take on the theme! The wonky physics reminds me of old school let's-play type games, it's pretty fun! I loved making the chairs spin like beyblades and fly all over the place, I am not sure how I got them to do it, but it definitely amused me.

Is the sandwich going to eat the chefs now?

Developer

What are chefs for? 😋

Submitted(+3)

This is a pretty charming game! The gameplay is a little glitchy (I almost got launched out of the map trying to drag a stool around haha) and there isn’t all that much to do, but it’s definitely amusing to hop around dragging body parts to the table in the centre.

If I have one recommendation, it’s to make it more clear which object you’re targeting at any given time, since it was a bit hard to tell sometimes when I’d picked something up and when I hadn’t.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! We will definitely do that after the jam :)

> (I almost got launched out of the map trying to drag a stool around haha)

Those are the kind of experiences we like to hear about! I replayed the game in the browser the other day and lost the last limb because it fell through the floor XD we deserve whatever ratings we get; for better or for worse T_T     :)

Hahah loved it! A very good game jam submission! A very fun idea and executed with great humour! Made me chuckle! Only thing off was the physics that didn't respond quite as I would have wanted. But ignoring that, playing this game was really fun!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! I'm uncomfortably aware of the several physics bugs we left in; but I think it's more to its charm :)

We wanted to capture 5hadowducks vision for the game since it was his idea. I think we pulled it off!

That said, after the jam we'll smooth a lot of the jank out while still keeping to its original charm.

Submitted(+1)

Hahah I agree! It reminds of all those simulators with jonky physics (goat simulator, toast simulator, etc.)

Developer

Oh good! Then I think we achieved our goal!

Fun fact: This was our first game made using the Godot engine. We used the latest 4.1 build that came out literally 2 days before the game jam started.

Submitted(+1)

Oh shit! Godot! Haven't gotten around to trying it out yet! Seems like an interesting engine

Developer

I'd say it's in its adolescent phase. It's coming of age, but still has some things to work out. I just got tired of Unity recompiling every time I made the slightest little change.. Godot is really nice to programmers, but it gave our 3D artist a bit of a run for his money :)

Submitted(+3)

Very funny game and an interesting twist, I had fun playing and platforming around! The sound effects are funny, the sandwich model is very well done and fitting for the games goofy nature! The physics were a bit off because some items clipped through the world haha, but I can't blame you since the game was made in under 48hrs. Good submission, had a good laugh!

Developer(+1)

Awesome! Haha, would you believe that it started out MORE janky? 5hadowduck wanted the physics to be janky, so I prioritized other mechanics :)

We'll definitely fix some things after the jam while still keeping to the spirit of janky physics!

Submitted(+1)

Good luck with that!

Developer(+1)

Thanks!

Cute game lol, I love the chef's dances :)

Developer

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. We had a lot of fun setting up the chef :)

Submitted(+2)

This game feels like it should probably be illegal lol.

I don't even know what else to say :O

Developer(+1)

🤔😏

Submitted(+3)

The game reminds me a lot of Goat Simulator. It's trashy but very funny and you enjoy playing the game. The chef is actually nightmare fuel. At some point the music stopped but the chef kept dancing, i guess he really liked the music. All in all i enjoyed playing your game. Good job.

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed! 5hadowduck knew what he was doing when he made the chef 😂

Submitted(+2)

Pretty funny game! The physics on some objects glitched out pretty much soft locking the game and the music did not loop leaving the game on silence. But overall I liked it, funny presentation and twist on the idea.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Were you able to reset?

Submitted(+2)

Great idea, super creative! I didn’t fully understand the dancing chef, but I absolutely loved him anyway :) Also, the sandwich character model is too good. The olive eyes are hilarious!

I wish there was more explanation for why we were making a chef, especially when there was one dancing in front of us already…..although, I suppose a chef might make a sandwich when there is already one prepared, and I they make them to be eaten, so perhaps it’s best left unexplained xD

Definitely found some physics glitches, but that’s totally fair for a 48 hour 3D game. The only one I noticed that might have caused problems is that if you jump and grab a stool, you can then drop it through the floor. I did this once but was able to make do with the remaining stools in the kitchen. One possible way to fix that (and introduce a whole host of other problems) would be to keep the colliders on the stool while it is attached to the sandwich, à la “I Am Toast”, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that you tried that and the ensuing physics system chaos was too much to contain in the 48 hours you had.

Great work, hope you expand on it!

Developer

Thanks! We plan to!

Developer(+1)

the chef originally was only going to dance when built. but we liked him dancing so much we just let him do his thing in the kitchen.

as for the physics, it was most of our first times doing anything 3D in Godot engine, probably would have been smoother if we had used unity, but we really wanted to give Godot a shot and we're pretty happy with what we got in the end given the time constraints and the learning curve.

Submitted(+2)

Ah, that makes sense! The chef dancing after I finished building him would have been a funny surprise, but I think you probably made the right call, to get the maximum number of eyes on that chef’s moves.

Bold move to try out 3D in Godot for the first time this jam, but it seems like you nailed it!

Developer

Wow, thanks!!

Submitted(+2)

Funny idea. Dancing Chef for the win. I was a little confused on what to do but I made my own fun out of it.

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Dancing chef for the win! You had fun, so that's a win for us!

You're supposed to make a sandwich chef, of course!

You assemble another chef on the table. We'll make sure to make that more clear in our next release :)

Submitted(+3)

I clicked this game right when I saw that title, haha really clever! The game was hilarious and super fun. I thought it was really cool the objective was laid out on the floor as a little todo list with "torso" already crossed out. That was a really clever way of informing the player what they needed to do. Also I love the chef animation haha!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Super glad you enjoyed it! Our artist had a lot of fun making the chef.

Submitted(+2)

The game is quite fun. But what the chef doing fr haha. On a serious note the overall is good, the art, the music and the goal it's trying to acheive, but the physics are like (WHAT THE HELLLL), no but they are really funny although It made me glitch through the map lol. Had to restart the thing to complete the game. Overall fun game though, definitely a solid Jam !

Developer

What IS the chef doing? haha. Congrats on successfully glitching through the map! And kudos for getting back on your feet and making yourself a chef!

Developer(+2)

"But what the chef doing fr" He's looking for the Lamb Sauce of course. He can't find it because the devs forgot to make a model for it in the game.

P.S. pressing R resets the game incase the physics start forming a revolution against you.

Submitted(+3)

really funny XD great physics stuffs

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Your game looks pretty cute! Looking forward to trying it out!

Submitted(+3)

What a game, i had a similar idea but i dropped it, i really love how you do this, is very funny and the bugs only make it better, really a piece of art.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm eager to try out your cat-owner game :)

What are these bugs people keep talking about? JK

Submitted(+2)

Unusual use of the theme, nice game. I like the sandwich model. There were some bugs with the physics, but overall great job team!

Developer(+3)

There were.. bugs..?

Developer(+1)

Just want to let you know that your game is the first one I'm going to review tomorrow. It's 3am my time right now. I've been reviewing all day, and I want to have a clear head when I check out Museum Night Watch :)

Eager to play it!

Submitted(+1)

Thanks for the interest in the game!

Developer

I review all our commenters' games :)

Developer(+1)

Super sorry but I'm on my laptop (it's a freakin' toaster) so I'll have to review yours when I'm by my PC. I WILL get to it though!

Submitted(+2)

a bit macabre but nice idea! nice graphics too.

Developer(+1)

Developer(+1)

Thanks. I really wanted to go for a slightly uncomfortable yet lighthearted tone sounds like I just about nailed it. (●'◡'●)

Submitted(+1)

you did nail it!

Submitted(+3)

Funny game I like the concept. The chef's model was 👌*sandwichkiss*. At some point music stopped for some reason. But in the end I did manage to find all the parts and cook my delicious chef. Nice game!

Developer(+1)

Chef's got the looks and the moves that make all the sandwiches swoon!

as for the music, for some reason the looping kept breaking after we thought we fixed it. but ce la vie.

Developer

Yeah, we'll remedy the looping issue after the jam. It was one of those things that we were scrambling to get working towards the end.

Sandwich Makes Chef is a hilarious twist on the cooking games genre. the face of the chef is what makes the experience way better xD, the sandwich looks hilarious, and the SFX make it funnier, the only regret I had playing the game is that I couldn't take some body parts from the dancing chef.

The game was surely short but it was still just a proof of concept for a game jam, somehow I'm glad you didn't push too much of it, this type of funny game can get boring if the amount of content/gameplay is given more than it should, even if the controls weren't smooth, I played it till the end and made my chef!

[ + + + + +] :: CREATIVITY

Perfect note for this one, you took the Jam Theme to a whole new hilarious level, and you made the idea even funnier with the art style you went with, the dancing chef with a creepy face, the sandwich olive eyes..etc. Great job on this one!

[ + + + + - ]  ::  PRESENTATION

I was honestly hesitating between 3 or 4 on this one, I think the buttons on the menu, the title screen, and the win screen, in general, can be way cooler/funnier, using the classic Unity UI felt a bit lazy/incoherent with the rest of the style, but it's a game jam after all, maybe you guys ran out of time, I decided to go for 4/5 just cause the sandwich looks cute

Well done, and best of luck for the rest!

Is this some kind of template? I am just curious

Developer

Yes! It's a template I put together :)

It makes me genuinely happy to see other people using it

Submitted

How can I use it?

Developer

You have to copy it and replace the text and stars; but if you want, here's the text the way it looks before I change it. Feel free to copy it. You don't have to use everything there, but this is how I do it:

Oh okay thanks. I thought it is some sort of API that automatically copy pastes this based on my stars. This is still useful I ma borrow that

Submitted(+1)

the developer of this game actually created it, so I thought it would be fun to use it while reviewing his game

Developer

Thanks for the detailed review! I'm flattered to see that my template is getting around :)

One weakness of the template is that it's easy to forget to update the stars in the review summary after doing the detailed review. I think you forgot to update the Presentation stars.

4 and 5 stars? We're honored! I'm taking this feedback to heart:
- Consider taking body parts from the first dancing chef
- Smooth the controls
- Improve the UI layout

Oh, and we didn't use Unity, we used Godot 4.1. We're particularly proud of that feat, because it was our first game in that engine :)

Thanks again for playing our game!

Hilarious game! Short and sweet.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks! It has a lot of 5hadowduck's personality. He did the art and animation. The whole team had a lot of fun putting this together with him.

Submitted(+3)

I love the idea. Hilarious result! Great job!

The dancing chefs made my day haha

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :)
