Game is pretty good, music and art is nice but could be improved a bit, minor things like non shooting npc doesn't have walking animations, story is fun, and i really like the part which told you how to pickup stuff, gameplay is fun and only 2 things it's lacks are minimap and better balance, overall solid entry

Developer(+1)

Thank you Noel!

I know the music is definetly lacking, no hiding that.

I had a blast playing your game, thanks again for coming over and trying out mine!

This game was much more fun than I expected it to be judging from the thumbnail :) Animations were a bit clunky and the levels could use a bit of work, but can all be done with a bit more time. Overall, this game has its own charm to it. I like it :)

Good effort. I enjoyed the game mostly.

The shooting was fine, but the dying on a single touch was a little too much. The enemies have double the durabilty by comparison.

I like your game, the art work and audio are very nice. However i would change the colldier box only to be on the players feet because right now i fall intot he holes even without stepping on them.Keep up the good work.

Hey Marlo, good job with the game! I will admit tho, I don't know how to stop the black holes. I gathered the three pieces and went to the workbench, but I couldn't find any way to stop the black hole. I tried a total of three times without any results. Restarting was kinda slow, but I kept myself entertained by shooting in beat with the music (oddly satisfying). Perhaps if the character was to make some sort of remark as to what to do? The corridors were pretty long and empty, you could perhaps add some decor (which would help people with remembering where they are and navigating) or maybe some interesting environmental challenges like perhaps traps or some classic doors and buttons. The enemies were also a bit plain, there were some with guns, but they never seemed to shoot? Perhaps I killed them too quickly to even give them the chance, but the enemies never felt like a threat.

I really liked the character art, and whilst the animation was simple, it was effective. I was pleasantly surprised by the black holes; I hadn't realised they were growing, and then when I saw they'd consumed an entire room, had a bit of a panic moment, good stuff. The opening dialogue was also nice, the little sounds added some interest. All in all, the game was good, but perhaps needing a bit of polish. A bit more variation in the world to keep it fresh, and maybe some extra hurdles to promote the goal of the game from a fetch quest to something a bit more challenging. Nice work!

Developer

I definetly get what you mean, decor to show the player where he/she is, is very critical, but I ran out of time and with that reason, I didn't get to implement it.

Right now I am actually working on an update for when the jam is over that is going to fix a lot of bugs and make it feel a little bit more alive. This is also going to implement upgrades to keep the player playing and coming back. I will also go ahead and add some extra UI elements to make it more visible what the player has to do.

Thanks for the reply!

Great job on your first game! As with nearly any game, we can all benefit from some polishing right? I don't think there was any game-breaking issues, but some proper animations could be nice (top down sprites are usually viewed from an angle like the old Zelda games or completely top down) and skipping a line of dialogue in the beginning could end with spelling the whole sentence out immediately first before going to the next line. I hope you can see that these are small things. Your game is really solid and is completely playable, I guess it's just that any game could be polished over and over again to make something even more appealing. Still, amazing work, especially for your first gamejam!

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

I definetly get what you mean and I will for sure implement it in the next update once the jam is over :)

Fun game! The story elements at the beginning were a nice touch. The controls felt pretty good, but I do have two complaints that I think both would be good changes. The camera is a little tight on the player, so you often don’t see enemies until it’s almost too late, pulling away a little big would be nice, and secondly sometimes I couldn’t tell how I was getting damaaged. I think the enemies with guns were shooting at me maybe, but they didn’t have bullets like the player does, so it was hard to tell.

Even with those complaints I had a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing!

Please check my game out if you haven’t yet. https://ntwiles.itch.io/black-hole-flyer

Thanks Nathan!

The camera problem I am definetly aware of. I actually moved the camera out quite the amount before release, but I am going to move it out a little more, as this is something not only I've also had problems with, but also other people that have been playing.

The spawning system might be the reason that you died sometimes. I didn't have time to implement a little line of code to make sure that the position of the spawner isn't less than 3 - 8 tiles away from the player, but this is something I am working on getting to work flawlessly.

Thanks for the reply!

Good start, couple things I could improve:
- There were no up/down animation so just using the same animation as when going left and right felt bit weird.
- The areas were bit too big in my opinion. Smaller corridors with branching room areas could've worked bit better.
- Maybe add some clip size /reload thing to mitigate the constant shooting?
- Music was okay, but as it looped so frequently, it became bit dull.
- The rooms felt pretty same one after another, even slight variations in tile sets give whole new personality to the gamescene.

But as a first gamejam and after about a month of experience, It's a good start to go with.

Developer(+1)

Hey man,

first off I want to say thanks for the reply!

I see that you mentioned the up / down animations not being implemented. This is purely because I didn't really know how to animate it, as I've never actually animated other than platformer games before this one, but in the next update after the gamejam voting is over, I am going to have it implemented.

The area situation was actually not intentional in the beginning. It was supposed to be a small lab but in a village on the outside, but I didn't have time for all of the tilemap designing for houses and stuff. As said above, this is also something that is going to be implemented in the next update.

Also, I tried making a reloading system, but it got a little clunky and didn't function very well, so I decided to remove it to save time and to fix a lot of bugs.

I don't know a lot about music, but I tried and it will certainly be something I want to become better at (Just need to figure Bosca Ceoil out a bit more).

Glad you liked it! :)

Great little game. I think you should ad an sprite switch so the character turns to the left and you don't shot through yourself.

But overall great work, i love the art style :)

it's not something photo realistic graphics but it just get to me so much 😁, loved it, awesome game man.

Thank you!

I believe it is pretty impressive with the type of feedback I've recieved, as I've only been using Unity and learning game dev for about a month now, so I am so thankful for ALL of the feedback I've recieved! :D

Good Game ,quite innovative and audio is good too :0

Plus the happy face is quite good ,once he picks items .Made me smile too :)

Developer(+1)

Amazed me that you think the audio is good, but thanks! I am so happy that more and more people actually started noticing the face swaps, glad it made you smile!

Please check my game too ;)

Thanks. Generally quite nice game, but I am dying very often even after "kind of upgrades".

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Yeah, I was planning on implementing upgrades for the character like extra health and stuff, but the time limit had me go another route

Submitted(+1)

Nice job, had fun playing it

Great for your first game jam ever! It is quite challanging (wich is - kind of - a good thing).

I was a bit confused, what I should do, after I collected all items, and the rooms where too big (to the point, where I had the same floor pattern on the whole screen, with no point of orientation).

And I love how the character gets happier and happier the more Items he collects. Made me smile.

Heyo! Nice work finishing. Lots of good things already said. The thing I'd re-up is the text in the front. Particularly in jam games, get to the fun asap.

Hi there!
First of all: Congratulations for your first game jam ever!
Here's some room for improvements:

1. Don't insta-die when you hit an enemy.
Plan some death animation and a graceful "retry" screen, an instantaneous interruption is kinda rude!
2. Play with font, color and spacing to improve readability on dialogs.
Also, put a border over your buttons, to tell the player that they are buttons!
3. If you plan to start your game with a long dialog, put some clarification screenshots/images under that. A black screen is not pleasant and can be a little annoying.

Top points:

1. Arts are very good! They reminds me some sort of Blackthornprod style with a personal twist.
up!
2. The overall mood is ok and the story behind is clear and focused. You got a nice take on the theme!

Thanks for your work and go on with gamedev, destroy your limits and improve yourself! :D

Developer(+1)

Hey there memel06!

First and foremost, thanks for the congratulation!

I see that you've got some feeback on the dialogue system in the beginning of the game. I was actually planning on making some small animations in between the different sentences, but the time wasn't there to do it. In the full game I plan on adding in images and some little animations that fit the sentences nicely and display the message really clearly.

I am not that good at picking fonts, but I will try to improve it, only problem is I don't exactly know any good websites where I can get free fonts. I also tried to make my own cartoony font to fit the art in the game, but that failed horribly, as I don't have a very good handwriting, but that is something I'm working on at the moment.

The death animations I will try to implement and find a place for, maybe even make the buttons in the menus pop out when highlighted, instead of just setting the color to be a bit darker.

And as you said, the art does look a bit like Blackthornprod's but I just feel like it is the most fun to draw, one of the reasons being that it is so flexible and rewarding to draw. It is not something highly detailed where you get frustrated when the lines wont match up and be as straight as you want them to, just my opinion tho. Glad you liked it!

Thanks for the feedback, I really do appreciate it!

(Wow do I feel like I just wrote an essay lol)

Was Boxhead your inspiration? It would be a lovely reference!
Nice game, liked the drawings and the funny  look!

Developer(+1)

Sorry to disappoint you if you are a big fan on Boxhead, but I don't know the game I am afraid. The title reminds me of something, but I can't put a finger on it.

Glad you liked the artwork and thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!
