Remembers me to overcooked and I love that shiet ^^ The pixel artist has a lot of taste <3 Cannot deliver every order but I think the strategy is just ignoring some of them hahah.
Very well done, congratulations and keep pushing forward!! ( :

How does the game fit the theme?
In This Game you are meant to Cook While the appliances you use to cook and prep the ingredients keep breaking... I thought nothing was supposed to go wrong.
What code and assets did you not make from scratch during the jam (if any)?
The assets for the background are slightly modified from Modern Interiors tileset. Audio clips/music was sourced around.
How many people worked on the game?3

Thanks for your review! Overcooked was for sure a source of inspiration for our game.
Glad you liked the art! The creator sells his assets here on itch! Here's the link if you're interested: https://limezu.itch.io/moderninteriors
Surprisingly complete game for a 1-week jam, congrats! Mechanics, visuals & audio.
The difficulty surprised me, though maybe it's a skill issue.
I found it particularly hard to complete the bun-cutting mini-game, since there seems to be an offset between the green area and the actual valid range. Considering everything else that's happening, I believe it could be made a little easier.
There's a bug where you stop moving when grabbing something, so you have to release & press again the movement keys.
Regardless, the level of polish considering the amount of mechanics is admirable. Congrats to your team.
Haha, definitely not entirely a skill issue! The difficulty is not balanced in the slightest. The sizes of the "slider" minigame was changed to fix a bug, and I think the alignment wasn't set correctly. It was close enough to not be noticed during the bug-fix window.
The bug where you freeze in place when interacting with ingredients was by far our biggest oversight. We shrimply forgot to fix that, but if we continue work on this, it will absolutely be fixed!
Thank you for the feedback, and I'm glad you found the experience to be polished (for the most part) and mechanically deep!
This is an interesting Overcooked-esque game. It's a surprise that you've managed to pull this much stuff off in 7 days! The pixel art graphics are very nice, and it seems like you got a pretty good gameplay loop going too! Nice one!
For some criticism, I'd say the difficulty and balancing really need a bit of tuning. Given the large size of the kitchen, the relatively slow walking speed of the chef, the amount of time needed for each interaction and such, I think it's way too tight if not impossible to complete every order. The worst offender I think is the dishes, as you can only take one dish at a time. This means it's essentially one more step for each order. The customers come in quite quickly too, and I think in my runs, it takes only the time for about one firefighting action until another customer spawns. That's just too quick. One last thing is that it's very easy to be not in the correct position to perform the action, or the inputs not being detected. It really hurts the game a lot when the core controls are not entirely reliable, and it will cause frustration in this already chaotic game.
Anyway, this is still a nice entry! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for playing!
Difficulty was something I spent a vast majority of the last day tweaking, and even with all the changes, I still didn't find a balance I liked. A little more time would have done wonders there. I've posted before about the plan for dishes, but they were not always intended to be the run-killer they are lol. Hitboxes for the appliances definitely need to be more generous. If we continue work on this project, all of these issues would be completely ironed out. :)
Chaotic and suprisingly fun, and very polished for only 7 days! Personally, I thought it was a bit too hard, but it still was a fun challenge.
Really cool game, i've enjoyed it a bunch, It would be really nice if the interactable item, like a grill, burger etc would highlight when we walk next to it, so that you know you can interact with it. Besides that really good game
This was very enjoyable!
I was very impressed by the amount of polish, the juicy sounds, and the amazing video-tutorial. Amazing work!
I absolutely love the hissing sound from cooking the meat :D
Only issue I had was that I missed the instruction on where to find the meat. I looked for meat in the ingredient-room (because there were visuals of meet), and had to go back to the tutorial, to realize it was in the fridge :D
I love the art and audio and design, but I ran into a situation where it seemed like I couldn't put a burger onto the stove, with no obvious reason why (at least to me).
The video tutorial is great too.
Nice little game. Lovely graphics, but the controls were a bit fiddly -- some places I had to be pixel-perfect to get the game to react (e.g., placing patties on the oventops). Great fun though, excellent work!
The game is immensely fun and I enjoy it greatly, and would likely play it more!
The only thing that really bothers me, is that hit boxes of interaction with appliances are very fiddly. It always takes me way too much time to find the sweet spot to place a patty on the grill or to pick up sliced buns.
Other that that, all the mechanics are there, everything works as it should, and playing the game is actually fun and very engaging. Kind of like single player version of Overcooked.
First off, great game! It was definitely cooked to near perfection. Well done for making this all in 1 week's worth of time! Great job team!
AUDIO
I found that the audio was really nice and soothing. It definitely complimented the chill but not so relaxed gameplay!
MINIGAMES
Another big thing that i think was the best implementation of was the minigames. The feel of actually like DOING the actions like chopping stuff up or cleaning the plates made it really immersive! Absolutely no complaints there! It was the best part about the game for me. It was also really responsive too, no jankiness about it.
FEEDBACK
Now, for the feedback.
MAIN MENU
I think the main menus ui could definitely use some polishing up. I have a feeling it mightve been rushed due to time crunch? Who knows :> If it had the sameish aesthetics as the artstyle did in game, the main menu would look and feel great! In its current implementation, it just feels disconnected from everything else and like out of place.
TUTORIAL
I personally think the tutorial videos were definitely a great idea, being able to see all the actions visually shown instead of only walls of text was good, but it unfortunately still fell into a bit of complexity and my brain just couldnt soak up that much info in such a short time :)
I think that if there were some playable tutorial levels just going through each aspect of the game itd help ease the players in more. As of right now it still took me a few games to figure out exactly what each thing did and where to find everything.
MOVEMENT
Another small thing that i encountered was the movement of the player, arrow keys are nice but id also love the option of having wasd. Its a small thing but definitely would feel nice cause i rarely use the arrow keys so was kinda sluggish :>
But thats just a small thing, the bigger more prominent issue was lining up to do the tasks and actions, itd very often feel like i needed to be insanely lined up to be able to interact with certain items. would love if itd be smoother by being able to interact with certain actions like taking orders and more without having to be basically pixel perfect in the same grid square cause thats sometimes hard with how much the player moves in a one button press. Makes doing things feel more clunky when you struggle to interact with them despite being right in front of them.
DIFFICULTY RAMP
Now finally to conclude this wall of text. I think the difficulty of the game could be mildly lowered. I found it hard to even get a consistently good rating of over 3 stars throughout the game. It felt like the amount of customers was just overbearing compared to how long each action takes. Perhaps the waiting time for each customer could be increased, maybe shorter action times for fixing appliances, or maybe you could even have more prep time during the closing hours. I liked the idea of being able to quickly prepare for the next day while the place was closed, however it just felt too short. Especially when the dishes start piling up :] Ah we love doing the dishes dont we! Doing them one at a time especially having to walk all the way to the counter for each one felt a bit too long though :(
WE DONE :)
But that concludes the feedback! Don't worry, game isnt as bad as i mightve accidentally made it out to be in this comment! I still loved the game a lot and sunk in a decent amount of time having fun :> Really wonderful game for a week long jam, if yall ever decide to continue working on this post-jam i think itd be a banger! Love the thumbnail btw, friends definitely got u >:)
Wow! Really appreciate the depth you went into for this review! You pretty much hit every issue dead on. UI and Menus were a late addition and very rushed, hence why they dont match. The range / hitboxes of the appliances was something we started tweaking to alleviate. The tutorial is absolutely information overload, and in a full / real game it would be delivered in-game as opposed to a powerpoint lol. The movement has some issues we noticed too late to make changes to, especially with animation locking. Lastly, the difficulty was something I personally was tweaking to find that perfect balance. What you played here was the "easy version" if you can believe it. Definitely still a lot of work there to get balance right, probably by reducing customer spawn rates and / or increasing how long they remain in line, or at least adding an indicator for how long they'll wait.
Again, thanks for playing and thanks for the detailed feedback! :)
Great game!! Playing games like this its always nice when its well done, was fun and was very intuitive, i didnt read the tutorial and i could play withouth problems >.< nice art and music too!
Nice game! For 7 days this is awesome! Will there be any further development?
I love this game and concept! At first you feel like it's a cozy pixel game until you realize your kitchen is prone to fires, customers are lining up, and my Welp rating is going down! Overall the game is great, just needs some more polishing that its all smooth and its not too hard to get orders through - perhaps an easy level that gradually gets harder? Would love to see more assets added, keeping the game on my watch hoping you guys continue to work on it post jam!
Also, thanks for playing Midnight Munch. Managed to watch your playthru and it was extremely insightful.
Damn this game doesn't mess around. I had trouble with the gameplay mechanics initially as I found them rather unintuitive; For example, you can't pick up the knife, you can cut bread at the place where the knife is, but you cannot cut a tomato. And you can cut an onion, but it has to be done on the cutting board next to the knife. To name a few unnecessary hiccups in my initial experience. But nothing that can't be ironed out with some feedback gathering and refinement. Other than that I think it's a very polished experience overall and a very fun game to play!
What a well made game! Really impressed, especially with the creative tasks for every job, I did like that. Having to managa a kitchen that wants to set itself on fire was fun aswell.
I would say the game needs to be a bit more forgiving, maybe make tasks quicker to do or like some others mentioned have all the dishes be cleanable in one go, as I found myself just finishing the last order, trying to put out the fires and fix the sink, got to wash 2 dishes and it was already the next day! I do get the intention that is being aimed at with this game and I do like it, but I feel like the things mentioned just now take away from the actual fun.
I'm not sure if this is a bug aswell, but my movement gets locked everytime I pick up an ingredient, which just slowed down the pace of the game in a unfavourable way, making the "GAME FEEL" feel more sluggish.
This is still a really well made game especially for a game jam, well done!
we love bashing burgers! but you guys really should employ some mroe staff or at least give me a raise, i cant be doing all this myself. also whats with these sinks and grills, they must need maintenence as they wont stop leaking and setting on fire?!?
I love how quickly everything spiraled out of control! I also appreciate that each object had a different little micro-game attached to it to keep the gameplay fresh. I think having to do the dishes one by one was a little too harsh, it would be nice to be able to grab a stack of the dirty ones to allow for more time to prep the food.
It was also cool to see customers ask for different cook times for the meat, a nice variation.
Good stuff!
It's really fun, once I've gotten familiar with the controls. The issue i had are like walking that sometime felt like a wall is blocking my path, and the bread cutting timing is not accurate. Need some time to get familiar, but i recommend others to give a go, and try to slowly read through the instructions. Really like how you guys added video in it too.
