Quite an interesting game. Perhaps a bit too easy to spam 'infect' though; I took over a vast swathe of the map like that, barely needed to produce infected ants or move mushrooms around
Not having the movement keys behind a menu would be nice, but that's a minor gripe~
Nice work

Developer

Yeah infect is OP. Definitely something to fix in the post jam version.
 Thanks for playing!

It's a very cool game idea! Are you planning on further working on it?

Developer(+1)

Someday we will. I'm the guy who had the basic idea, even if I wasn't able to help as much as I would've wanted to :P

Submitted(+1)

Very original game idea and the visuals have a nostalgic feeling! I'm not very familiarized with this kind of game, so without a tutorial was very hard to understand what to do, maybe you could give some love for the UI later and include a brief instruction/help page to guide players through their objective ;)

Developer

Yeah we will definitely work on those in the post jam version.

Quite a weird and original idea! Controling an expandable ant colony as only one entity definitely fits the theme.

Of course, the execution could be far better with keypad controls, an easy-to-read font, more feedbacks on what's going on, etc. But it's a pretty interesting concept nonetheless, and your work is enough to convey its potential. Well played.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! We'll work on all that in the post-jam version!

I definitely liked the idea here of all the ants moving as one and taking one action a turn. I wasn't 100% sure what my goal was and how the rules worked (sometimes infect gave me new ants, sometimes it didn't) but I was able to grow my army to like 14 or so ants so I considered that a win. The font was really hard to read but there's something here, great job!

Developer

Thanks! The goal is to infect all ant hills as you get a victory animation. The game does have health right now and you have to hit an enemy twice to infect it. We will definitely be working on these issues in the post jam version.

I have several negative things to say about the game, the balance is non-existant, there is no direction and the controls are rage inducing. On the positive, the game is unique, with better controls and balance it has potential. I see it as an attempt to do an ambicious game with not enough time. Keep going at it, there is something good that can be found inside this game but its not being shown here.

Theme, sorry, i dont really see it.

Originality, what i mentionend earlier, there is a nugget of gold hidden inside the game, its truly original and it can become a great game, as Mark would say this has potench and its unique. Dont be discouraged and pursue this concept with a better aproach.

Developer

Hi, I am the maker of the game. I agree completely with you and I will be making a post jam version of this game.

One of the things I wanted to do is make proper keyboard controls for moving and producing ants.

By the way, it tried to fit the theme by making all units act as one. It was suppose to have a story about a fungus infecting ants and controlling them which gave the limitation/advantage of all your ants moving as one. Hence the "only one" part of the game.

Submitted(+2)

Oh thats right, i skimmed by the fact that you move as one, ill update the rating now because the theme is there and i was just being dumb.

Developer

Thanks! I understand not catching it right away lol.

Developer(+1)

I agree that it's an ambitious game with not enough time! Maybe if we did it in a month or two it'd be a really decent game. We didn't even have time to add music, even though I did at least one tune for it.

If you didn't see the theme it's because you move all ants at once, but looking back that doesn't work too well with the gameplay; we only did that because otherwise the game would get a bit too complicated for the theme. That'd get removed in a more developed version in the game, though.

I personally feel that the only one action per unit is a good idea. We just have to build the levels for it.

Developer

Not just a good idea, it's what every good strategy game ever does...

Developer

I think I said that wrong lol. I meant one action for all your units.
Doing what every other strategy game has done is boring lol.
We just need some good ideas for moving all your units as one.

Like others have mentioned, it's rather difficult to get into, but it's quite streamlined for an RTS made during a 2-day game jam. Very well done!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Any suggestions on how to make it easier to understand?

Submitted(+3)

Well the way I suggest to do it would be to start with a controlled, pre-created game scenario where the player's only option is obvious, and that way the player will figure out the mechanic on their own, for example, putting the player in a scenario where all they can do is gain control over an ant, and not worry the player with other more advanced mechanics and such. Once the player successfully comprehends this mechanic slowly escalate the game to introduce other mechanics, perhaps with a simple guide to each mechanic somewhere on the screen. I know that's much easier to do in a level-based game like mine, but perhaps there's some way to do something similar in yours :) good luck!

Developer(+1)

Good idea. I tried to hint towards what you are suppose to do with the lone ant right next to one of your own.
And I kinda just hoped the player would understand what the enemy ants were doing with picking up mushrooms to take to their hills and reproduce more lol.

Submitted(+2)

You need to work on showing the player how to play. It felt satisfying getting close to a group of ants and starting a chain reaction of taking them over. Well done and keep up the good work :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your feedback!
Will definitely work on that for the post jam version.

There's definitely a lot of potential for a fun and addicting experience, maybe even multiplayer, where two parties have to infect each other or something. At the moment, it was a little difficult to follow, and I managed to infect way too many ants just by mashing the Infect button over and over for a while.  But it's a very cool idea!

Developer

Yeah the infect button is a bit overpowered. I tried giving the enemy ants more damage but that was way too hard to deal with lol.
There will be a post jam version of the game with improvements made.
If you have any more ideas for improvements, please let me know.

Agree with the last commenter that it seems like an interesting idea, but I don't really get it. As far as I can tell, I can basically spam infect (and occasionally move up to the next bulk of red ants) to add all ants to the hive. But then what exactly do the fungi do? And what do the numbers over the holes indicate? And what does produce do?

I'd recommend explaining what each mechanic does on the game's page. Let me know if you do and I'll give the game another shot and rate it when I feel like I understand it better. :)

Developer

Thanks for trying it. I added some for the actions in the game jam page.

Submitted(+1)

Ahhh okay, this time I understood what I was doing. :D Yeah, I can definitely see the potential here. As it stands, the game needs a bit of rebalancing to make collecting resources and producing actually useful. In my first attempt when I had no clue what I was doing I initially started dying and then recovered from having only a single ant to winning by only spamming infect.

Also, you might want to change the resources from mushrooms to something else. Since the infection is a fungus, I thought these were related to the infection as well.

Nevertheless, it's a cool idea and an impressively complex system for a game jam that just needs a bit of tweaking. (and maybe juicier  visual feedback ;)).

Developer

Thanks for the feedback!

Quite interesting but I didn't quite get it. Felt like having to click move then picking a direction was a little hindering.

Developer(+1)

I am one of the makers of this game and I agree with you. Before the deadline I had planned to include keyboard actions but ran out of time.
Maybe in a post jam version I can address the issue.
 Thanks for playing!

This was fun to play!

It is really satisfying to infect ants and I felt really happy when I infected all the ants on the screen :D

Hey, we made a godot game too. Check it out!
