I enjoyed this! I played through three or four levels and didn't get the feeling of anything being out of control, but I see from other comments that things occur in later levels. The presentation is quite impressive, especially the satisfying sound and visual effects when swapping tiles and removing matches.

I agree with jermrellum's comment that no real strategy is required, and adding that is what would elevate this. In the levels I played I didn't see any actual challenge or way to fail. You could limit the number of moves (though that would require designing the levels by hand in a way you probably didn't have time for) and/or have consequences of making a given move that could build to a failure state. This would also necessitate some way to anticipate when and where the golden tiles would show up. But what you achieved in the jam's time constraints is impressive.

It did bother me that matches that occur serendipitously don't register. On many occasions the board would start out with a match or one would fall into place but it wouldn't disappear until I manually swapped tiles around just to cue the game. It takes away from the otherwise-stellar presentation.

All in all, very nice job, and congrats on finishing your project!

Oh, I forgot to mention that the mouse cursor got really sluggish and unresponsive when I switched the embed window to fullscreen, but when I exited fullscreen it was fine. Not sure what was going on there.

Stylistically it feels great, and it looks good, others have mentioned below how sometimes it seems like matching 3 won't work sometimes, but my main issue is I the player didn't really feel like I was making meaningful choices.  Really, every level was just swap the golden tile with the one next to it and get them closer to each other.  Now sure, some match 3 games are supposed to be mindless, but this game reminds me of something like Hexic (which is very strategic).  Though the main difference there is that you can only move a tile if there's a match.  I played through until level Taro where the screen was black, and I didn't particularly feel challenged.  I like the idea, and the rotation mechanic is great and the accelerators work well in introducing chaos, but I'd also like to have to think a few moves ahead, and it seems like the worst that can really happen in this game is the board turns and the golden tiles end up just a little bit separated from each other.

Really fun game, the sound design and general game feel were really nice! The gameplay itself did seem a little off, since sometimes you could match a row of 4 and other times not, and matches that fell into place wouldn't disappear automatically like in most match-3 games. It didn't hamper the experience much though, the game was still very enjoyable!

I saw this on GMTK's stream last night and had to play it. I really love the gameplay mechanics and mixing up the Bejeweled style game. Aesthetically it's great too with all the animation, sound and art!

Oh nice! Thanks for stopping by and trying it out for yourself!

I really like the art for the game. However, I was a bit confused by the match 3 mechanic. I would sometimes move a shape vertically and it would have 3 in a horizontal row, but it wouldn't do anything. Same if I moved a shape horizontally and there was 3 in a row vertically. I noticed it also didn't do matches going both vertically and horizontally very well either. If this intentional, that's fine, but I think match 3 games are expected to do that unless stated otherwise, so I that should be specified if it is intentional.

The rotation has fun puzzle and mechanical implications. That being said, it made me a little motion sick at times. I'm not sure how to remedy that, as I rarely (if ever) get motion sick from a game, but I definitely felt that throughout those levels, which made me stop playing sooner that I might otherwise have done.

Overall, I think this game is fun, I just wish it followed match 3 mechanics more (or communicated that it intentionally doesn't) and didn't make me feel motion sick. Very good job :)

The atmosphere of this game is beautiful. The sound design is so eerie - I felt anxious the whole time, and that was before it started getting out of control. Great job!

Awesome, thank you !

Of course! We'd love your feedback on our game as well, if you haven't done so already. SpaceBus

This is an excellent submission! Really clever puzzler that feels very polished and could probably be released as  full game as it is! An excellent addition to a very popular genre, good job!

I really liked how this simple "match 3" type of game escalated out of control with each new change! :) One thing is that matching the 3 golden tiles isn't as "strategic" as it normally would be, because in normal match 3 games, you can't swap 2 items unless it makes a clear. Here, you can swap 2 items regardless, so the minute 3 golden things were on screen, I just moved the 3 items close to each other so I could match them (instead of actually considering what moves to make).

But overall, this is very solid for a jam entry and it's good as it is ^^ But I would probably make it more challenging and introduce new mechanics faster if this were to get a post-jam rebuild.

Developer

Hey Aracade, thanks for the thoughtful feedback. We'll take a look and see if we can fix some of those bugs after the rating period.

Not a bad game at all, got all the way to AppleFruit to see how things would change, very solid mechanics! Certainly felt an out of control element once the spinny things started kicking in. Nice job!

Thanks pixelcometgames, we appreciate that you took the time to get a feel for the game. :D

Very nice submission, I absolutely love the graphics and the music. The gameplay was a bit too easy and it seems that i can infinitely move tiles as the tiles do not switch back when a match was not made, but other than that brilliant! Would make an excellent mobile game.

Developer

Thanks nulledwine, we appreciate your thoughts. Enjoyed your submission as well :D

Nice visuals and polished game, I had a pleasant time playing it

Awww, thanks Jujubito!

The visuals and audio are great!

I think the new mechanics are being introduced too slowly. At some moment I was gonna just quit thinking nothing else will really happen and then the rotators appeared. Other issue I have is that there is no challenge. I can just explode some random tiles so that the yellow tokens appear and then simple move them together.

For the positives, apart from the overall presentation and feel, I think it's really relaxing and the idea has potential. You should definitely create a post-jam version of the game!

Developer

Thanks for the thoughtful and valuable feedback! You rock Voycawojka!

A very fun game and it really did get out of control lol. I think you could have ramped up the difficulty quite a bit faster but the game did get more interesting as I played and I love the creepy atmosphere. The polish is what makes this game really stand out, it has a simple but really beautiful design. Overall a very interesting and fun game, great job!

Developer

Heeyyyy, thanks for the kind words BlackHammer66.

I wish you had added the Out of Control stuff faster. In my playthrough, the game took its time really ramping up -- I was on the base, stable grid for a good few levels without anything extra really happening.

I am curious if it was a conscious choice to allow what are usually considered "invalid" moves in other Match 3 games? I.e. it feels like a bug that I am allowed to make moves that don't result in at least 3 items being matched. It sort of undercuts the tactical considerations that go into match-3 games.

But as for positives, your use of sound is brilliant! The SFX are punchy and sweet, and the music is absolutely beautiful -- I demand to know the contents of your pedal train!

All things considered, y'all knocked it out of the park. Great job!

That is actually not even a mechanic we knew about in Match 3s. Thanks for the tip!!!

Great feedback, thanks modern_mail!

I really liked it! The art compliments the game's simplicity very well, the sound effects are very good, the gameplay is simple and easy, but quite fun! The only problem I have with it is that you can move the gold tokens without breaking any lines. Otherwise it is a very well thought out and executed game! Good job!

Developer

Thank you for playing! We'd like to tweak the design to make it more challenging. Thanks for the valuable feedback PepperBox!
