ive noticed now for 2 days new gifs are not playing on this site any idea why
Hi! We experience this issue as well on our game page (NSFW)
Previously the animated gifs in screenshots were still working (When most of the other gifs stopped working), but now even they don't load.
Excluding the issue with the screenshots, we noticed there was a difference between old and new gifs:
— The old gifs that continue to work are the ones that have /original/ right before the [name].gif in their URL
— When you try to upload a new gif it has /originalm/ before the name and when you open such gifs in a separate tab they are not animated
The new gifs when donwloaded seem to have a way smaller size than the original file, seemingly now only including the first frame on gif. Here's the same gif (SFW) uploaded late September and now:
September — img.itch.zone/aW1nLzIzMjk0NTAwLmdpZg==/original/W89scw.gif (2.9mb & animated)
October — img.itch.zone/aW1nLzIzNTQwMjA5LmdpZg==/originalm/6O7%2FmX.gif (77kb & static)
Same here! All my pages stopped loading gifs!

Do you mind sharing what pages you expect to see what on? List the URL and what images should or should not be animated.
We pushed out some changes to our image processing server that caused some invalid image resizes to get cached. I want to spot check any problem pages to ensure that the functionality is working as before.
Note that some caches may take some time to get refreshed.
Thanks
Basically all my asset pack pages had some animated screenshots and banners that aren't working. Some old content is still animating, but all new animated gifs I add aren't working.
In my latest project (https://franuka.itch.io/elemental-dungeons-fire), the banner should be animating, the background image too, everything below "Objects & Decoration", everything below "Character sprites", and screenshots 2, 3 and 4.
Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks!

So all the older gifs on my page are working fine, but if you scroll down there are 4 animal sprites that are just still-images when they should be animated. I never had the banner issue tho

Sure!
I was referring to cover images specifically in my message (the 630x500 images that represent a project). All my project cover images are animated GIFs. In the past, these would show their static initial frame until they were hovered over, at which point they would animate. Now, only the cover image of my project Top Down Sprite Maker is animated (strangely by default, and then stops on hover), and all other project cover image GIFs are being displayed as static all the time.
You can see this on my profile page.
Strangely, I sometimes see them as animated in my project dashboard, but then they go back to being static if I refresh the page.
Many of my other GIFs hosted by Itch.io aren’t animating either. On the Top Down Sprite Maker project page, both the banner and background are animated GIFs, but neither is animated right now. Similarly, all of my screenshots are animated GIFs of program footage. Right now, it seems that only 2/6 (the first and the fourth) are animated in the right-side preview panel. The only GIF on the store page that I see as animated in my browser (Chrome on Windows 10) is the “Please rate the program” GIF with the moving stars, which is hosted on GitHub.
I have similar issues on my other project pages. For example, on the Pokémon Gen 4 Trainer sprite style page, the page banner isn’t being animated, but the animation preview GIF in the page body is, because it’s hosted on GitHub.
GIF cover images in project widgets also don’t seem to be being animated. You can see an example on the Pokémon page linked above.
I hope that helps. Let me know if I can do anything else to help diagnose the issue.
P.S.: Means a lot to be talking to the man himself! I think this site you’ve built is a monumental service you’ve done for creators and players, which is why I’m so passionate about its future. I’ve watched your XOXO Festival talk several times and always go back to it as a source of inspiration. I’ve been a bit frustrated by the lack of communication and clarity from the team recently surrounding the various issues the site has been having in recent weeks, but I’m rooting for you guys to get everything sorted!
Banner and background images uploaded as animated GIFs via the page theme editor are still static. Reuploading them also results in static display, so it doesn’t seem to be a caching issue. As far as I know, this functionality has consistently worked until about ~2-3 weeks ago.

I've tried with another cover GIF for my game "Endless Escalation", only this time with the recommended size (630x500). It now animates in game lists but only when hovering it, not by default.
This is the GIF:

And here are the pages where you can see the cover not animating unless you hover it:
https://itch.io/games/genre-strategy/tag-clicker/tag-idle/tag-incremental/tag-si...
Cover images have been “hover to play” for many years now. There was a bug from earlier this week that caused them to automatically play, but it has been fixed. (Note there may have been some exceptions where gif cover images autoplayed, but we’re trying to normalize how covers are rendered everywhere)
Do you remember them automatically playing somewhere previously?
Glad to hear it should be fixed soon- Will be keeping tabs on it! Here is my report regardless:
All GIFs on all of my pages do not work, although screenshots do play if you click on them. This is a pretty big deal for me, because I've found that people are lots more likely to buy my assets if they can see them in motion. (For example, effect animations.)
Some affected pages (banners + screenshots):
Also- Before coming here and finding this thread I also checked the subreddit for any news on itch.io GIFs, and found this post reporting a bug with image uploading which may be relevant to what you guys are working on: https://old.reddit.com/r/itchio/comments/1o0fxok/my_profile_picture_randomly_reverted_colors/
If this is just a caching issue, why does it also occur with newly uploaded GIFs? I did a test post here with a new animated GIF that I've never uploaded to itch before, and it's completely static: https://itch.io/post/14464770
I have the same problem for all sidebar gifs uploaded to any projects page. When I click on them to open the "gallery-view" they start playing. Reuploading them doesn't fix it. Gifs that are embedded directly via the html editor of the page and also project covers still seem to work.
Sadly this really affects the presentation of the pages :/
Same on my games, cover image works as intended (hover to play) but the banner, screenshots and gifs in devlog posts don't animate.
Old gifs embedded in the game description work. Screenshots animate only if i click on them and it opens them zoomed in.
Here are affected projects if that helps:

3 days ago or so screenshots animated, but now even they don't.
Can confirm yesterday and today - .gif uploaded to page don’t play, even upon opening the specific image in a new tab.

• Page: https://fudgelfox.itch.io/foxhole-high-visability-tech-materials (Password protected at the moment - but admins should have access)
•Expectation: The only image in the text body should cycle between the two images present in the .gif.
•Link to .gif from page: https://img.itch.zone/aW1nLzIzNjAwNTY1LmdpZg==/originalm/%2F5uV7N.gif
Thank you for your continued work and hosting!
Can confirm the issue with importing gif today. Previously imported gif still work without issues but it seem like the new ones are not.
page: https://maxime-nourry.itch.io/64x64-pixel-knight/devlog/1085422/the-rest-update
the two images from this devlog are gif but do not animate as expected.
Thank you for your time as always.
Much love
This is a long lasting issue and it is starting to get really frustrating for us as this really affects the presentation of the pages. How should we promote our new animated additions to the packs if the previews/images are not animating at all?
The miniatures previews (thumbnails and screenshots) are not animating accross all our assets packs (both new and old ones), some older assets included in the text are animating though:
For example here:Gifs are not animating even in devlogs, for example here:
https://atomicrealm.itch.io/mini-dungeon-tileset/devlog/1069178/animated-garden-tiles
https://atomicrealm.itch.io/pixel-art-characters/devlog/1084116/meet-veronica
Please fix this ASAP
Just pitching in that new gifs dont work for us either at https://savagebenji.itch.io/boars-in-rome
4 gifs in the body between the text. Old gifs were working and the new ones we uploaded dont.
I have a partial solution:
Store your animated GIFs in a public GitHub repository and link the raw content URL in the HTML/Markdown with an <img> tag (HTML) or a ![]() (Markdown).
Here’s an example:

This works for GIFs in project page and devlog bodies, but it doesn’t work for banners or background images, since those have to be uploaded via the theme editor, and thus they rely on Itch.io to be animated and rendered correctly.
Same here :( My product page hasn’t been displaying the animated screenshots since the recent changes. They only animate when you click to view them individually. Since this pack is heavily focused on animation, not being able to showcase it properly makes it much less appealing (as other users have also pointed out).
I really hope this issue can be fixed soon!

Did some testing on one of my project pages that has an animated gif: https://cobaltdragon.itch.io/hellsniper
Checking the <img> tag shows 2 gif source files:
img.itch.zone/aW1hZ2UvMzQxOTEwNS8yMDYwNTU5OC5naWY=/347x500/M8Cgy6.gif
img.itch.zone/aW1hZ2UvMzQxOTEwNS8yMDYwNTU5OC5naWY=/794x1000/COX6gh.gif
Checking both files revealed they are single-frame images.
Clicking on screenshot opens the image viewer, in which the gif animates correctly. Checking the source reveals a different image:
img.itch.zone/aW1hZ2UvMzQxOTEwNS8yMDYwNTU5OC5naWY=/original/vDct5H.gif
Using devtools on the project page to insert this image source as the target for srcset="" causes the gif to start animating immediately and the project page appears as expected.
This is speculation, but it seems there is a backend image transcoding system that is rendering single frame gifs from animated sources. I'm sure the itch team will sort it out soon.
So, I tested and works with both gifs in the description and screenshots, my question is why? Using devtools you can see that the gif file was indeed uploaded, but it refuses to show it in the page, just the first frame instead. It's annoying, I'm starting to making assets to sell in the platform and I can't show properly my animations without the gifs working, I know itch's team is small, but this issue is taking too long to fix...
(Before you ask, I'm not a English native speaker :D)
Hey there! I'm also facing the same issue. Has there been any progress on the fixes?
On my end, most, if not all, of my GIFs across my pages (banner images, screenshot sections, and cover pages) have stopped working. It’s been 30 days now, and I still don’t see any functioning GIFs, even when browsing assets in the store. This issue is really problematic, as I’ve been unable to upload new assets or update my older pages because of it.
i'm worried that uploading new assets without working GIFs might impact sales and hurt the overall presentation. If there’s been any progress or update on this, please let us know. :((
Hi!
I have the same problem here! And it's kind important to show the animation for the users
Hi,
Same problem here as everyone: newly uploaded GIF are not animating. It seems that the image server is simply keeping the first frame and "discarding" all the other remaining frames when we upload it.
Here for example, this GIF of my latest game weight about 328kb. After uploading, it's now a 8kb GIF image with a single frame. So the issue seems related to how the GIF are processed when uploaded to itch.io.

Thanks for your hard work, I hope you'll be able to fix this, as is this very annoying to not be able to show players how the game "moves" in the description post.
