This is a neat little rogue-lite game. It's a little bit finicky to play, but I loved the dungeon crawling parts of it! This is definitely really replayable. Good job!

Developer

Hey thanks for taking the time to play and give feedback! And yes, it's tricky, I'm definitely not very good at my own game haha. With a bit more time we'd have liked to have introduced a smoother difficulty curve and made earlier floors a bit simpler, but 48 hours is a killer! Glad you enjoyed :)

I like the dungeon crawling element mashed with the shoot-to-move mechanic and the artistic component is solid.

Developer

Hey thanks for taking the time to play and leaving feedback. Glad you liked it!

I was excited to find a shoot-to-move game that really felt like it nails that out of control theme. It's cool how different the gameplay feels with such a simple tweak, where I start trying to get myself stuck on walls to regain control. Awesome job with it, it's a very solid execution of a cool concept!

Developer

Hey thanks for the feedback and taking the time to play. My best results easily come from the sticking to the wall strategy too! I'm glad you enjoyed the game :)

I really liked the music, art, and gameplay! It was fun to figure out how to move and avoid enemies while still trying to hit them.

I also died randomly when I hit the stairs down while holding the key and had the bazooka equipped. Didn't see what happened there.

Overall: great, fun, little replayable game!

Developer

Hey thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed playing! I'm thinking of updating the game post jam as there is a ton of bugs in there! Thanks for letting me know about the random death, I'll try and find out why that happens!

Submitted(+1)

I got a solid chuckle from the movement mechanics as soon as I booted up the game. Shoot to move but you can't control the shooting? I'll definitely take it. :P The art style works well to make sure that everything isn't too cluttered on the screen, considering the wall of bullets that you inevitably have to face. The world remains readable even among the chaos, which is always good. Was I good at the game? Absolutely not. Did I still have fun? Absolutely. Nice work! :D

Also, here's some bad fan art for you:

I've been waiting for this, it's made my night! Thanks so much for taking the time to play :)

Very tight controls and enjoyable to play! Various weapon and item types means there's also a lot more to think about when your movement is tied to your shooting.

Cool little game! I really dig the simple graphic style!
I'd love to see what it'd be like in local multiplayer too, do you think it'd be interesting?

Hey, thanks for the feedback and taking the time to play!

That's actually a really great idea and not something we considered whilst making it. I'd love to give it a go! We're looking to do a post jam update as there was loads of stuff we didn't get to put in due to the time limit.  I'm definitely going to see if I can get it to work, sounds like it would be great fun!

Submitted(+1)

Thanks for taking the time to do that! I'm looking forward to trying it with some friends hehe

Oh boy, my first "shoot to move" game for this jam, though, since the character pretty much always moves this label doesn't really fit... So, cliché avoided. :D

I like this game. It has a pretty steep learning curve but when you get more comfortable with the controls and general mechanics you already feel like you mastered something and feel super cool playing it. So that's a plus. You really need to think differently for this game so that gives a huge potential for the player to improve and get better.

It didn't really feel like the levels got harder as I got further. But that's okay since I think the first level is plenty difficult.

Next thing that I like is that the different weapons aren't only upgrades but also change how you play (at least some of them).

So this game was great fun.

And the graphics as well as the soundtrack rocked as well. :)

Developer

Yes we found this theme quite difficult, in that all the innovative ideas we came up with just sounded miserable to play haha. In the end we opted for the fun over originality approach :P Even so, I like to think we tried to put our own spin on it!

A better progression curve was something we wanted to look at but we ended up running out of time. We especially wanted to make the earlier levels a bit more immediately acessable. Would have been good to change enemy spawn rates by floor or something!

I'm really glad you enjoyed some of the powerups. We wanted these to significantly change the way the game was played and to also augment/detract from different playstyles. So far the feedback on these has mostly been pretty good! It's awesome you liked the presentation too. We had alot of fun with those.

Thanks for taking the time to give such great feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed your time playing :)

very good game

i like the arts used for the guns

good work

Developer

Hey, thanks so much for the feedback :) Glad you enjoyed playing!

Combining movement and attacking is really clever, it simplifies the gameplay but also creates a high technical skill ceiling. The monochromatic pixel art helps with readability and gives it a style all its own. If you're good at twitch roguelikes, give it a shot!

Developer

Thanks for the comment :)

Also, I believe I saw your game being played on stream yesterday, if its the puzzle one with the cells? I really wanted to have a go (love that kind of stuff) and was going to try and find it haha. Seems you came to me instead!

The "shoot to move" mechanic is nothing new, but there's so much on top of that that makes this game stick out. It's extremely well polished with a great art style, has great music, and always feels responsive. The variety of weapons is really awesome and it's cool how some of them even change how your character moves. I'm not sure if the game is randomly generated or not, but if it is then there's infinite repeatability as well. The only issue I have is that the difficulty could be turned way down. It would be awesome if there were more and harder enemies on later floors, cause right now it's hard for me to even get past 2. Overall great entry that fits the theme.

Check mine out and drop a rating, if you have the time :)

Hey, thanks for the feedback!

Yes, we found the theme quite a difficult one to innovate with this year so we went for the fun over originality approach! The game is indeed randomly generated, which also made tackling difficulty a bit harder than we anticipated. With more time we'd have liked to be able to fine tune this a bit more, but unfortunately we were rushing to submit and didnt quite get round to it! Im glad you enjoyed it nonetheless :)

I'm out at the moment but I'll be sure to have a look at your game when I get home!

I was assigned to review this game from the reviewing discord. Unfortunately the mac build doesn't seem to work, once I unzip it and try to run, my computer just says it's broken and needs to be deleted.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Hey, sorry about that and thanks for letting me know. My mac exports always give me a bit of trouble and I can't work out why :S. They seem to work for some people and not others. I'll take a look into it

I feel ya, been there plenty fo times myself. Good luck!

A very nice take on the theme, with the classic shoot to move theme - the downwell vibe is nice!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I love the red in downwell :) tried to emulate the visuals!

It is a really fun game. I liked the composition of arts and songs and how it gets together. I also like how the description on the page was and wasn't necessary for me.  I thought I was good until I have no ideia what do what and decided to read it haha.
Overall I had a lot of fun playing. Well done!

Developer (2 edits)

Hey, thanks for taking the time to play and give feedback :)

I'm glad you had fun playing it!  I'm also really glad you managed to get a feel on what to do without reading the insutrctions at first. I think for the most part it's not too hard to work out what's going on, with the exception of the powerups, as these change the rules of the game quite significantly! We wanted to put a tutorial to explain what these did in game but ended up running out of time!

Nice music and game mechanics. Liked it!

That's great to hear :)

First 5 star I gave on 'Fun'

Kinda wished there was a titlescreen. I also wished I could stop shooting but I began to understand and respect the decision. It was fun moving around and there were times I wished I could move faster and times I wished I could move slower so overrall it seemed like a really good pace for gameplay.

You didn't put too much descriptions on what stuff was but you didn't really need to because you used classic videogame tropes and things were really clear. I didn't know what those white 6ish things on the were.

The part I had the most fun was when I just decided I was a pro at your game and started playing really recklessly and let adrenaline take over and that was a great decision because I had a ton of fun doing that lmao.

Good choice on music also bc it matches the pace of fast segments and raises tension when things die down.

Very curious on how u did the specks on the floor. I couldn't notice a pattern and Im wondering how U did it.

Overall, well done.

Hey, thanks for the really great feedback!

We also wished there was a title screen :( We had some really great art and a cool little back story we were going to put into a small cutscene before you got to play but unfortunately we ran out of time! I'm really glad you felt that way about the movement, we wanted it to be a bit unmanagable in order to fit with the theme, but not so much that it wasn't fun to play.

Again, we wanted to put item descriptions in game but ran out of time (48 hours is hard!). The white square items are different powerups that changes the rules of the game quite significantly. We put descriptions of these on the main itch page for the game, but the jam submission page doesnt let you be anywhere near as detailed :(. I suck at playing this recklessly and my best results usually come from picking off enemies one by one and using the walls to slow down the movement haha. It's great to hear that you had fun playing in a different way! One of the powerups was 'Vampire - Become invincible. Health drains slowly over time. Kill enemies to reset the timer and keep yourself alive'. We put this in specifically for players that wanted to play like you!

Regarding the floor,  when the room is created there is an invisible object that randomly walks around the blank room for a set time. We used a DS grid to record each tile this object had been to as "floor".  We had 4/5 different speck patterns and then just assigned each "floor" tile one of these patterns at random. Hopefully that makes sense! If you'd like to learn more the basis for the code was Heartbeast's video on random level generation. Check it out on Youtube!

Thanks again for taking the time to play and rating :)

And I agree 48 hours is tough lmao I pressed submit w 15 seconds to spare :((

But np man I can tell you put a lot of heart into ur game

Developer(+1)

Haha 15 seconds is cutting it fine!

wow i LOVED this!!  I'm honored to be the first review haha.  This is a really clever mechanic that I instantly clicked with.  And it works flawlessly, AND there's a ton of content (love how the powerups change the way of play so much).  I love the art style, it's both retro and stylized uniquely.  Most importantly though it's really interesting and challenging and fun at the same time, which is a hard combo to pull off.  Best game of the jam I've played so far!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Hey, thanks for the awesome feedback. I'm honored to have you as the first reviewer!

I'm really glad to hear you clicked with it easily.  We were rushing to submit so didn't have time to do instructions/item descriptions or anything. We were a bit worried it might be confusing at first and ended up just having to put all these on the main itch page,  however the jam submission page doesn't give you as much scope for description!

Thanks again for taking the time to play and rate :) I'm gonna go take a look at your game in return!
