Wow, I want this game on my phone :)

Well, realization is master level IMHO. Gameplay is like a quick snake game & little puzzles, I like it. (But my reflexes nowadays are too slow - seems. When the key would have had to be picked up, I failed miserably quite a few times.  Though I honed my skills from 8 bit era, strange.)

Developer

Thanks for the comment!

Really well-made game! But somehow it really didn't click with me; I think for me - and obviously, that's completely biased - it would have needed to be faster or slower. With the current speed, my biggest enemy was always me being impatient XD

Developer

No worries, in response to a similar point in other reviews we're pondering the idea of maybe having a speed setting in future versions. That way players of higher or lower skill levels can set the game how they want it - or even complete all the levels at various different speeds for replayability.

This was pretty fun and addicting!! I zoned out and next thing I knew I looked up and was at level 25. I love the simplistic and fast paced gameplay. There was variety of enemies and creative level designs. I also liked that I could play through the levels with one hand so that I could snack on hot cheetos with the other hand. Truly fantastic game!!

Developer(+1)

Haha, we didn't design the game for ease-of-cheeto-eating but we're very pleased to hear it came through as an unintended bonus! :P

Really enjoyed the gameplay of this very much! The polish was very good. I also just loved kinda lining up the moves I wanted to do while manoeuvring a ship that was soooo fast. Think it made for a fun challenge of part trial and error and part reaction time challenge. I think it'd have been nice if the obstacles reset when you died as well rather than kept going to make the route planning a little smoother for those trying to get through a run as fast as possible. Overall though, really fun game. Loved the rainbow effects and the polish and made for something really enjoyable.

Developer(+2)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

That feedback is useful, but it's also definitely a tough balance to achieve. Because the resetting the level every time comes with its own problems to be solved: everything snapping back to its start position at once can be visually jarring, so we could hide it with a fade-out fade-in... but then that adds time to the game between attempts which might be frustrating.

I do agree though that it seems just more universally "fair" if the player is presented with the same challenge every time they die, rather than all of the obstacles being in different positions every time. It's something we'll have to think long and hard about for a solution!

Submitted

Yeah definitely a big appeal of the game is the immediate respawn. Makes things less frustrating and encourages you to try again. Hard to find a balance!

TOUCHY CONTROLS AND FAT FINGERS DONT MIX! :D

Game is very fun, and looks great! its a shame I suck so hard at it, Very well done. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1066252250 @01:42:37

Developer(+2)

Thanks Evan - as I've just posted in a reply below it might be a cool idea to add a speed setting in future to make the game more inclusive / accessible and add some replayability (because players could always start easy and then play again at a harder speed later). Something to think about :)

Wow wow wow! - This gem has blown me away - I started testing it out, to review it, about 2 hours ago....

Before I knew it, THIS happened...   ;)

I'd say that's a sign of an incredibly fun, addictive game! - LOVED it...

Graphics (including the neon effect, and those BEAUTIFUL rocket particles (gonna have to try and re-create that effect, it's mesmerising!)), presentation, sheer amount of gameplay, GREAT (and devious) levels, and the professionalism blew my mind...

Agree with others that maybe a different music track would help the game, and I found the ship speed a little *too* fast for my liking (Made it a little too frustrating at times, although everything was silky smooth, and beautifully smooth and tight controls), but yes, an AMAZINGLY polished and addictive submission, I love it!

Well done both...    ....5-5-5!   My Jam favourite so far....  :D

Developer(+1)

Wow! Thanks, that's a particularly glowing review ;)

Yep music-wise we definitely need more tracks in any future version. I think it fits the game well but a single track on repeat over 40 levels / 2 hours is bound to get annoying eventually, so in agreement with you there. I also wonder whether we could add difficulty levels or accessibility settings in future... so maybe you could choose the setting of your ship's speed. It would add replayability too I guess - players might want to retry all the levels in gradually higher speeds!

Thanks for the review and the useful feedback.

Hey, no problem! - credit where it's due!  :D   ...and I see what you did there, ha ha!   ;)

Good point about speed! - You have a few options I guess? - Game speed - ie. everything slows down a bit, but the same solutions / strategies, albeit with a slightly more sedate pace...      ....or ship speed, and that would completely change the timings and strategies for certain levels, giving additional challenge / replayability - Maybe you could have different types of probe classes for the different speeds, maybe even slightly thinner, wider, longer etc too, affecting difficulty / easiness!

Again, a beautiful game, simple to pick up, very hard to master! - and those particles....   Mmmm!....  :D

Great game! Incredibly polished and with a great deal of content for a game made in such a short timespan. The level difficulty is a little irregular, but that's about the only complaint I have! The game looks great, sounds great and plays beautifully and has JUST the right amount of frustration in each level to keep you playing for "just one more game" as you try to get every diamond before progressing. Loved it!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! :) Yeah as with my reply to a comment below, will definitely be looking at re-ordering the levels in future versions based on how many fails made in each one when testing.

(1 edit)

I just saw this reply of yours regarding the difficulty, and what a superb way of using real-world data to allow you to re-organise the levels order!

I wouldn't have thought of that, but such a perfect way to analyse difficulty when you think of it  :)

Incredible as expected!! Great work Dan and Allison! Top-tier gamedevs doing what they do best! Loved it! Although the learning curve would skew a bit. In particular level 10 was much harder than some of the later levels IMO. Just moving some levels around would definitely enhance the curve and experience. Great work overall! I expected nothing less! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks - and you make a very good point! For future versions I think what I'm going to do is play the game through a few times and then re-order the levels based on how many times I failed each one... I'd have done that for this jam if I had more time. Heck, I could have implemented some anonymous analytics to pull that data from everyone's playthroughs if I'd had an extra week haha. Feedback much appreciated, cheers!

Either way it really wasn't the worst, even big games like candy crush and angry birds have weird curves like that so I dont think an average consumer would notice much. Just noticed a few seemed more out of place than expected. :p

Looking forward to it!! :D

Game looks and plays polished. I gave up on level 33, though :) The music was a little bit repetitive to my taste. Overall a good game. Rated!

Developer

Thanks for playing :)

Great game, very robust and smooth gameplay. Cheers!

Very cool, super challenging, looks great and a bunch of polish. Very impressive that you managed to get 40 levels in there and the gave saves progress when you exit too (bonus points). Awesome job!

Developer

Thank you!

Nice game! Feels very arcady and addictive :D I love the rainbow trail^^ An option for the music volume would be nice though

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yes we're hopefully releasing a more detailed version in future and it will definitely have an options menu with volume control :)

A  very enjoyable game! It's very challenging, has a great background tune and is highly polished.
It takes skill to do well in the higher levels but that's what makes this game rewarding to play.

Developer

Thanks Bart :)

This is awesome, and super polished! It's a little hard for my taste, but the idea and visuals are great.

Developer

Thanks!

An interesting, beautiful game! =)

My results:

I did not overcome the last level, I was already a little tired of the game.

What I noticed:

- when you restart the game (close and start again), the failure counter is reset;

- "locks" sometimes do not appear immediately, but with a delay;

- at the start of the level, the player's ship looks in a certain direction, when it loses and respawns at the start, the ship always looks to the right (direction = 0);

- sometimes it seems that the ship has not yet touched an obstacle, but has already lost, I suppose the collision mask is a little more than sprites;

- different types of obstacles are not synchronized (it is easier to see it at level 40), that is, over time they move differently than at the start of the level (room) and a situation may arise that 2 obstacles create an impassable place (but for a short time, of course ).

These comments are not critical and do not affect the fact that the game is good, but perhaps they will help in the development of the game, if planned. =)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback - it's definitely appreciated. We're hoping to add more levels and (fingers crossed) add this to our catalog of Nintendo Switch games in future. So we'll take on board what you've said.
