Wow, that intro was really atmospheric. I enjoyed it a lot, sucked me right in. The graphics are pretty incredible as well. After I fixed the tree board, nothing happened as far as I could tell. I redid it a few times hoping that there'd be some sort of "thing" (like the tree lighting up) that would let me know I'd done it successfully, but I didn't see anything. After I fixed the board that led to the metro, the screen flickering really threw me off. I thought the game had bugged until I read the other comments here and realised it was meant to do that. Tbh, I found it a little bit obnoxious, hahaha, it was really messing with my eyes.

I killed a few dudes in management but I couldn't find anything (I see in the comments that there's a board there I can repair or something?) and even the mild flickering in the other view modes was starting to give me a headache, so I ended it there.

Beautiful world you've conjured and I love the mellow atmosphere the game has going on. A really great job for a jam entry overall!

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot! The tree should light up after you connect the tree board and it must have at one point since you got to the next part, which is the screen flickering (technically "there's an issue with the world's nEon supply").
I'm glad to hear about your comment on that, I wasn't aware that it could get to the point where it's annoying  to the eyes.
The solution is to enter the Hub Control building and push the button in the center there. That was put in there due to time constraints, since actually a boss battle was planned there. But I ran a bit short on time to add all that...

Looks fantastic. I'm amazed such 3D can be made with GMS2. Would like to see more guidance at the start. Great job!

Developer

Thank you! Yes, this is more than doable with GMS2, and it's not even optimized yet!
Yeah, there's a complete lack of tutorial for this game, I'll need to add that in a later version.

Well, artistic vein and ability to realize it for sure u have, Mr. Bart!
Yes, it must have been a huge project - which I cannot imagine as not well-versed in 3D.

Continue with it, the light switching is quite great.  Would recommend: allow full screen mode, and somehow I couldn't fasten the seatbelt with E, so had to walk into city (run mode next time). There I was ca one level higher than the passangers.  Nevermind, it is a great attraction, and you r gonna conquer Demoscene :)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you very much! Yes, I overscoped quite a bit. Originally four areas were planned of which only two are in a fairly playable state (not counting the starting area).
The interaction with the context using the E key is a bit lacking indeed, even buggy at certain points.
The idea at the start is that you go inside the train cart, then push it forward until it starts moving on its own. It doesn't matter if you're connected to the cart using E or not.
Ah yes, the Demoscene :). Definitely looking forward to that!

Please keep on working on this project. I just want to spend more time in this world that you crafted. I was so mesmerized by the combination of color and sound. I think that triggered some hidden childhood memory of me playing some weird jrpg. What a great entry! Thank you!

Developer

Thank you! I might just keep working on this since the world isn't finished yet. And I've grown fond of this game world myself a bit, really :)

Very cool world!

Really enjoyed reading all of the dialogue from the robots, and I liked how the welding gun pushed you back as you shot so you could kind of use it to "fast" travel. Would have liked to see the different noble gas shaders/filters to be used in the gameplay or world, perhaps having different districts utilize different gases, as I found myself sticking to one of them (Krypton, baby!). And I noticed the slight lag on mouse movement, which didn't hurt the gameplay. Just pointing it out, as I could very easily tell since I normally play alot of fps games, and Im sure most people have.

Overall, I enjoyed exploring the world, and its quite impressive seeing 3D games being made with gamemaker!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I considered using the elements for something but couldn't come up with anything useful during the jam period. I like your idea of the districts, though! And I must admit I'm a fan of the Krypton too! :)

Great visuals, it's an interesting concept, we loved the robots as well!
Maybe a little bit more of guidence at first would help too!
Congrats!

Thank you! I agree with that bit of guidance. Going to add that in a newer version!

I got to get into this more, but still haven't reached the ending. I got 3 panels repaired. Then a popup brought me out of your game and when I went back in, the 3D started flickering bad, so I had to start over. Not your game's fault. But so far it's gorgeous. I love all the detail and care you put into the town. Great job!

Developer(+1)

The flickering's not a bug, it's a feature! :p
After you repair the three panels there's an issue with the nEon supply. The town characters will talk about it.
You can always switch to another element (display color) using the Space key to get some improved vision.
From there on you're supposed to take the metro to the Mgmt District and press a button there, to "fix" the nEon.
After that you can take the metro back to Grand Central where the characters will say something differently again.
And that's basically the "ending" (there's no actual party or anything).

Oh, ok. I'll check it out! And nice job on the game. I think the welding could have been a bit prettier, but it worked just fine for me.

Wow the world in this game was so cool to see! Loved exploring stuff. Flora Gardens seemed like it would be cool. I also liked you had the light flicker on just some of the colours. Otherwise I'd have a hard time playing having those flashing lights. The world design is fantastic. I think more signposting could have been helpful. Main issue was the welding game had a sign for "completed" and "finished". So I think just one sign would have been helpful. Otherwise I wasn't sure whether what I did was right or not. I went back and talked to the robots after. They're awesome. I felt bad when I was welding them them and they told me to stop. Atmospheric game with a great environment!

Developer

Thank you! I agree with your remarks on the signposting. The game's really "here, go explore and figure it out".
I should add some more indicators in an updated version.

Very great game! I found the look of the game very original and beautiful. The models are neat and interesting (I loved the robot). The different colors are cool. Congrats!

Thanks! Technically it's an edge detection shader applied as a post-processing effect. After that the color is multiplied by a factor, depending on the element (He, nE, ...).

The E doesn't work for the elevator if it isn't powered yet and you need the device before you can weld the boards. I should've made that a bit more clear in the GUI... :)

(1 edit) (+1)

I'm almost giving this top marks because there is so much work going into the art and easthetics. You even made a 3D game in a 2D engine. That amazed me! Only drawback is that the welding mini-game is confusing or isn't working.

Developer

Thank you! Greatly appreciate it!
The welding minigame needs some work alright.

Amazing visuals and town! I loved the little robot guys. Sadly, there just isn't enough here. I did the welding but once I got them all connected nothing happened. :( Overally though, so good looking! Your artistry is advancing spectacularly! Amazing stuff!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks a lot!
Did you also complete the board near the metro elevator? Once that is powered you get access to the elevator that connects to the metro and  two other areas become accessible.
When all three boards in the downtown area are completed the screen starts flickering and you should make your way to the Mgmt District via metro to push a button that fixes it.
I should've made that welding minigame a bit easier though, really :)

Submitted

oh, non I didn't even realize there were others. Haha. After I fixed the one the little guy just kept saying the same thing. I will go back and try again! Haha

Nice map. I like the attention to detail like the floating neon atom, different elements for the different screen effects, etc.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah, all those little things. A lot of time was spent on those.

Submitted(+1)

Looks really cool! I'm always so impressed when  people do 3D in gamemaker :D Great job!

Developer

Thank you!

The visuals look cool. When the game goes full screen on a 1440p monitor, the game looks like it's rendering to 1080p in the upper left corner of the screen.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Hm, you're right about that. The game only supports one resolution, I didn't make sure other ones would be supported as well.

Submitted(+1)

Lovely game, the intro was very exciting. Gameplay is a tad underwhelming, but everything else was great. Thank you for the experience :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! More than welcome :)

Submitted(+3)

I absolutely love the visuals. I'd be thrilled to see where the game goes when it's finished. The welding minigame was pure torture sadly :')

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I agree that the minigame could use some changes to make it more playable.
