So cute! love the art style and the interpretation of the theme was unique.
Thanks! I’m very glad you understood my interpretation of the theme! :D
such a fun game i like it ...
i gave it 5 stars on fun :)
i with that the start button is space so my hands is on the keys and ready to play ...
also you can manage the sounds a bit more so it's balanced coz it's too high.
however that doesn't mean that it's a bad game ore something, these things is just my feedback to enhance it a bit more
This was a fun little platformer, I love penguins so I clicked through to this out of the blue xD
The core mechanics were good, although I seemed to die a lot to some of my spacebar pushes not registering quickly, perhaps that was just me! I also spent a confused couple of minutes trying to work out why the <> buttons didn't do anything before finally realising you meant the arrow keys - might be something to label a touch more clearly in game in the future, but it's in the description so I can't fault that! My own common sense working against me there, really...
I liked how the fish played with the instinct to collect collectables, and made you larger so obstacles were harder to clear, and how the speed of the levels made dying almost an act of scouting ahead (failure is progress!) even if my memory is pants enough that I wasn't benefitting from it much.
Ultimately I quit out around Level 6 because I was really starting to feel the gameplay repetition, but I'm not a big platformer player so I wouldn't take that as a negative! The art and music worked well together, and the whole game has an air of polish which is quite impressive for the timeframe, on the whole, nIce Job!
Thank you very much for the great feedback! :D I am working on a lot of the elements you mentioned. Thank you for taking the time to play!
good & fun concept, i liked the game, its a cute little platformer game, nice music & sound effects, its a bit sad that i have to give it 3 stars just cause the topic (Failure is progress) is not emplemented at all ):, & i also liked the studio logo lmao.
Thank you for the feedback. :D I didn’t go the obvious route on the theme. Winning and losing were also part of the concept and tried my best to include that.
This is a fun game, tho I think it can use some change:
- The camera is zoomed in real close, which doesn't give the player time to react to the incoming hazards, or plan his speed relative to the platforms. This leads to a more careful approach of play, which isn't something bad - you just want to let the players who are good at the game and want to go faster do it. And the game wouldn't play different if the game was zoomed out.
- There might be some coyote time and jumping quality of life fixes, but I tested it quite a lot and I don't think there are. In a game all about jumping you should add coyote time for the jump, and also letting the player press jump a couple tens of a second before hitting the ground and still jumping. Jonas actually have a video all about this. Jonas' video
Other than that, really good pixel art and audio. Fun gameplay.
Well done!
Ok thanks for the feedback! I didn’t add coyote time in yet but thanks for the reminder! I’ll definitely make sure to add it in! :-D
Very nice game! I love the music!
Really lovely cute game, the music and art is amazing!!! Really fun :)
I’m glad you enjoyed it, thank you so very much!
Very good art and I love the musik . It s very fun to play! ;-)
Additional things you could add:
It would be nice if you added an auto restart function or the spacebar to restart the game. An endless mode would also be very nice!
very cute and fun. the gameplay loop is solid and fun. though I not sure why I making the penguin miss the fish, penguins love fish, he is starving, let him eat. :(
Thank you so much for the feedback! Eating what he loves will make him fail. He can eat when he gets home safely! lol
but he is starving! :( lol, good job, i enjoyed it
Great, I am looking forward to seeing more different scenes after the game jam!
Thank you so much! Feel free to follow my page and I will keep you updated on when the full game and mobile version will come out!
You made this in 72 hrs?! It feels so smooth and complete! I mean, I literally died in the tutorial, but it was great fun. All the mechanics made sense and had a purpose, and that WOWIIEEE when reaching a checkpoint is very satisfying. I don't see how this ties in to the topic, but a solid submission notheless.
edit: level 6 is gonna give me ptsd
Lol Yay! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Yes only 72 hours, I would have loved more time to add other things but I will leave those updates for the full version. My interpretation of the theme was to have the penguin make it home safely instead of collecting the fish. His overeating causes him to be heavy or slow and causes death with results in failure. Where normally you have to collect items like coins or rings to pass a level. I thank you so much for your feedback :D
This is a fantastic application of the theme! Sound design and visuals are fantastic! Such a well polished game!
The progression was also smooth.
But most importantly of all... WOWIE!
you're most welcome! I'd say this game is good as is, and any updates should be bug fixes (although I didn't run into any) or ui improvements mainly.
Song is stuck in my head, along with the sound effect of hitting the wall.
Nice clean visuals. Responsive controls. Fun game.
lol! thanks for the feedback!
For some reason my browser doesn't want correctly focus on the game, meaning that spacebar scrolls the page which makes the game unplayable for me. I don't know why this is, so far your game is the first where I have this happen.
(And no, I didn't rate your game that would be kind of unfair.)
edit: pressing `F` will get it into fullscreen mode. HOORAY! I CAN PLAY!
So, feedback time:
First, what I think is a bug: when in this mode the character jitters A LOT.
I like the visuals, music and sound effects. I am not sure of the theme though. The idea is fun and all but in a way the fish is just a normal thing to avoid. Replace the sprite for something that is normally bad and you have a game that works exactly the same but doesn't follow the theme.
Ok! if you didn’t know already you can press the F key to toggle fullscreen mode but if not I added the little fullscreen button in the corner so make sure you refresh your page!
already found that out right after I wrote my comment :)
Haha, that silly penguin really likes fish.
Simple, yet fun! I don't know what else to say, the idea works very well, balancing speed is already hard when I don't have to worry about being too stuffed to move. The art is very cute and the music reminds me of the good old days. Loved this!
Nice!
Thank you so much :D
I loved the cute visuals and the animations of the penguin were very nice and the general aesthetic was very pleasing to look at! The particle effect of he snow added some nice visual interest as well as the semi pixel art "wobble" and "bounce" animations and the black outline on the player.
The sound effects were also nice and added to the experience too and the general controls felt fine tuned and responsive to use!
I'm not sure how the game tried to fit the theme really worked as if the fish were replaced with some sort of "slow-potion" sprite the game would work perfectly fine as they are essentially another type of obstacle. But the theme was evidently there though! The camera could have done with being zoomed out a bit more too just so you can prepare a bit more for upcoming jumps, that might just be personal preference though.... or maybe the camera could zoom out more the more you die?
Overall, this game was very addictive and played really well, I'd definitely recommend giving it a go as the gameplay is extremely fun!
WOWIE! Thanks for such an honest review! :D Yeah I get that a lot when it comes to how its related to the theme its kinda met to take the concept where the more collectibles you collect the higher score you get types of games and flip that on its head but I know that may be confusing, I’ve also been getting the camera issue a lot as well and I get it now especially when it comes to the faster levels I see that it can be very frustrating.
I really appreciate you streaming the game that really meant a lot to me! :-)
How can I not love a cute penguin game!!! Wonderful art, great execution. Movement feels good and the music is just wonderful too :) Great game through and through!
Thanks! :D I’m very glad you loved Pingüino!
I really like the pixel style of the game, but the character looks a little shaky when picking up speed. Anyway, good job :)
Yeah I noticed that as well, its weird cause when I was making the game he wasn’t really shaking at all but now he is? I’ll try my best to fix that. Thanks for your feedback! :-D
I really liked this game and how you organically included the theme of the jam into the game. the visuals and the music is charming. One feedback I have is that the current input scheme is a bit confusing as I was reaching WASD by default.
Good job!
Ok! I’ll make sure to add WASD support! Thanks for your feedback! :D
Please change controls to WASD, this would make it so much more intuitive to play. Otherwise I like it, a lot like the Google dino jumping when you have no internet, even the sounds are very similar.
Ok I’ll make sure to add multiple ways to play this game! I’m even thinking about adding support for wired controllers! Thanks for your Feedback!
