I never thought I would be so scared of a few high-speed, floating A's.

In my opinion this game fit the theme of the jam perfectly. Dying isn't necessary or forced upon the player, but still provides helpful information for future attempts to navigate the maze.

The minimal visual design is nice in its own right, but I think the lighting is truly wonderful. Being able to see just far enough around myself lead to many intense, heart-pounding moments as I raced towards the exit and could see enemies flying past or chasing me just on the edge of my vision.

The most exciting moments for me were when I could spot an enemy passing one of my lamps, guess their position, just barely juke them by suddenly changing my path, and then race to the exit taking many twists and turns before they could catch me. In general, the level design facilitated these exciting moments. There were many alternate paths to take, and while some turns took my to dead ends, most of the time I was able to keep twisting around corners without worrying too much about taking the "correct" path.

The exception to this was the last level. It seemed like, in an effort to make it harder, there were more dead ends and several long corridors with no alternate exits that made it easier for enemies to trap me. This felt kind of frustrating. Having the freedom to move around in the previous levels was much more fun in my opinion.

The sound effects fit the visual theme, but weren't too special. I thought briefly that adding a sound to indicate approaching enemies could increase excitement, but I realized I actually liked the surprise of seeing the enemies appear in my vision unannounced.

I hate horror games and jump scares, but overall I loved playing Beacon of Light. Good idea, and good execution!

By the way, I'm curious how you programmed the enemies. It seemed that at the beginning of my life they would ignore me, but the longer I lived the more they would hone in on my scent and chase me down. Is that true? Also, sometimes I saw a small red circle drawn on the ground. What was that?

Developer

Wow! Thank you very much for such a detailed feedback. Much appreciated! I'm glad that you enjoyed it.

Yeah, the last level turned out to bee too difficult indeed. I guess it needs some alternative paths.

The enemy AI is pretty straightforward. We used A* pathfinding to generate paths. And enemies have two states: patrol and chase. While they are patrolling they wander around the level, shooting raycasts in front of them to try and spot the player. Also we added a little ignore state, when enemies kill the player, doing that we tried to minimize the chance of players getting killed right after the respawn.

As for a small red circle - it is an indication of place where certain enemy currently is. It is an attempt to warn the player about enemies.

Your feedback is very important as we want to continue the development of the game!

Thank you!

Developer

Thank you for your amazing review. We are very happy that you liked our game. We continue to work on it and hope that soon you and the rest will be able to see an improved full version of the game.

In answer to your questions, the little red circles are something like footsteps in the dark, they are added for the atmosphere. The enemy behavior is actually a bit random, we didn't specifically create the enemy behavior to become more complex, but it sounds like a very good idea to me.

nice. its like a more intense, slightly horror version of Pac man. could have used a soundtrack for the game but overall pretty good. nice touch that when you die it lights up that area.

It's like a super tense version of pacman. Wish there was a little more sound to regular movement. But I love that it's still doable without dying, really gets the theme and doesn't become a game about dying for dyings sake. The lighting effects are really cool and it's amazing how you've made what looks like the letter A into these super aggressive roaming packs of dogs. I'd find myself tucking into corners hiding from them. Super tense with real responsive controls.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback!

'a super tense version of pacman' -- YES!! That's what was exactly in my mind while I was playtesting the game. I guess the game would have been more satisfying if we implemented some kind of 'the predator becomes the prey' mechanic, like Pacman's cherry.

Anyway, your comment is much appreciated ^_^

Great concept and really well made, this is a legit horror game and I jumped more than once. Completely nailed the lighting !

I usually try to give a constructive criticism in those comments but I really don't find anything to say but "give us more of it"

Thank for your feedback! Much appreciated ^_^

ooooooh its got them thriller feeels and I am not gonna lie I'm a bit freaked out. Which is a good thing! You got the atmosphere down perfect. The visuals are so mystifying it really ties the whole game together. Wonderful game, good job!

Developer

Thank you very much for your feedback. I'm glad that you liked the game ^_^

This felt awesome. You want to talk about Jump scares, I dont want to give it away, you will jump if you play this game with any sound. The movement is smooth. The lighting is masterfully executed. It plays into the mechanic so well. The simplicity of the graphics. I loved this game! Keep up the great work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, a bit more sound effects would definetely push the gameplay further)

This was really good and I played it more than other submissions. Simple but very fun. I also really like how you use the dead bodies as light sources. Clever! My only suggestion is to signal the player that the enemy AI has detected you or just let the player know what makes them find you

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback!

About signaling - our thought was to change the color of the lighting when the enemy detects the player. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to implement and test it)

Creepy and surprisingly difficult! Great visuals, love the gameplay and the way enemies chase you down. I wish there were no dead ends  though, it makes for situations where your only choice is to die. Or you could remove the death limit so that dying is no penalty at all. Anyway great game! Had lots of fun running away from the creepy As in the dark. :)

Thank you for your feedback!

Yeah, I see now that limiting players' lives was not a good idea indeed)

This game is gorgeous. I am in love with the lighting and the minimalist design, and it fits great with the gameplay. When the first enemy killed me, I almost jumped out of my seat! I would definitely get some slower, more ominous retro music in there, and maybe a redesign on the character/ enemy sprites, and this is ready to publish on steam. I'm impressed this game is so polished in such a short amount of time, nice job!

Developer

Thank you for your detailed feedback!

We'll consider continuing working on this game after the jam, if we get enough positive feedback from the players)

Minimalist and elegant, i liked the way you handle the illumination in game.

I dont know if was my resolution but my character was going out the screen. (it was my resolution)

I like the bodies leaving light mechanic. I do feel that the lives system was limiting and frustrating. I would experiment with a scoring system where less bodies is a better score if you change stuff post jam. Graphics were pleasant. Some kind of creepy background music could really push the atmosphere further. Nice work over all.

Developer

Thank you for your detailed feedback! Yeah we would definitely experiment with the lives system to make it less frustrating)

Climatic, dark, and theme of carrying a light, love it.
very polished, enemies AI is quite nice, but action is a bit slow paced.

Yet, was fun, avoiding enemy was rewarding :)

Awesome work!

Thanks you for your feedback! We made the gameplay a bit slow intentionally to try and play with your emotions)

I like this game! Great gameplay! Good job!

Please check my game as well ;)

Thanks!

Sure, I'll check your game)

A very beautiful and addicting game! So far the best I've seen on this jam!

Developer

Thanks ^_^

Realy nice mechanics the only is that you never see how many levels there are, and the end is also a little frustrating but still cool game

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks!

Could you tell me what do you mean by 'the end is also a little frustrating'?

I was instantly kicked out of the game after beating i think the 5 level

Developer

Seems to be some kind of bug. The game has 6 levels, and after finishing the last level the main menu should have appeared for you. We'll have a look into it, thank you)

Ok really nice mechanics there. gg!

Your game needs music and there's a resolution bug that you need to fix.

I like how after you die your body gives out a bit of light.

Fun game I like it

Developer

Yeah, you're right, a bit of music would definetely make the game more enjoyable.

Thanks for the feedback!

Visuals are quite good, but that's about it. Sound effects are almost nonexistent. It's not very fun to wander around in the dark just waiting to die. There is almost no skill involved, mostly luck. You can evade the enemies, but your vision range is too short to react when you run into one. It does follow the topic okay, but doesn't really do anything interesting with it.
