Great game! Love the character design, the constant need to switch between melee and shooting is a great use of the theme. The stages are designed pretty well. Overall really fun. I did find myself missing and taking damage more than actually hitting the enemies when try to melee attack.  Towards the end, I  ended up just using it more as a dash to escape or platform than fight. Maybe I just wasn't using it right. Other than that great work! Keep it up!

I love how you can play like crazy or be calculated :D The parallax effect is really nice and i love the character design. The game definelty needs some strong  feedback when killing and getting hurt i often found myself getting hurt without noticing :d Other than that i had fun with this one great work :D

The boss design was very clever, a large boss would have a large hitbox, making it just an alternating right and left click boss fight, but with the "real" boss you actually have to aim, move, and dodge while alternating attacks, definitely would like to see this concept expanded, the animation and the character is great, and theres some nice lasting particles with the lightning bolt, the only thing missing is some music to listen while slicing and throwing lightning at enemies, a very great job for your first game.

Nice game, good design, visuals and was quite fun! some background music would be nice though. Amazing Job!!!

Really cool game, nice design with putting fun first, quick restarts, the option to turn on invincibility etc. I found the slash attack quite hard to use but the lightning bolts were awesome so I mostly relied on them haha. The floaty guys at the end were tricky and I'd say the difficulty was just right! Nice art style and responsive controls, nothing to fault here.

Great work :)

What a cool game !

I had a blast playing it ! This is arcade gameplay at its purest form

Congrats on the game !

This might be the best jam game I have ever played

Developer

That makes me so much happy! This is my first ever game. I am really happy you liked it.  ðŸ˜

That a cool game! Attacks are awesome! I love the player's sprite! But I need more impact on attacks and hits - maybe more smashy sound.

Developer

Thanks for your feedback. I added some impact on the attack but the original idea was completely different but by the time I was done with levels, I didn't have much time left. I will surely plan better next time. Thanks for such valuable feedback. This is my first game ever that I completed. I have really learnt a lot. You guys are just amazing!

My favorite part is how I can infinitely dash back and forth, be it I start to fall slowly, but it makes it for a fun effect. I have a wide monitor so all the UI was completely hidden to me and i had no idea how strong an attack was or how much health I had. I ended up trying to just switch between the two constantly which seems to work but without seeing if there was cool down or some other indication that the "attack was not at its more powerfulness"  :) Very cool

Developer

Hey! I am so sorry I didn't have any idea that the wide monitors couldn't show the UI. I am planning to buy a cheap one so that I can test games on that in the future before causing someone any inconvinience. Thanks a lot for your feedback! I honestly wouldn't have known this issue if it wasn't for you.

Was this a unity game? (Sorry, can't remember and I'm not at my desk at the moment)

If so there are two things you can do to see what it looks like without the need of a new monitor.

  1. in the game view set the resolution to be custom and try (3440×1440). I labeled mine (UWQHD)
  2. Try updating the anchor points of the ui to be fixed to the corners of the screen and then move it from there. Leaving things anchor to the center and moving them outward tends to make the ui go off screen of certain resolutions.

If this was Godot or Construct or GameMaker or something else then sorry for useless advised ;)

This was really fun, the animation behind the melee was especially fun to just mess around with and feel like a badass murdering enemies.  The lightning was cool for use as a ranged but honestly I just used the sword mostly.  As for some clear feedback tho:

  • The feedback for actually hitting enemies, which does seem to be there somewhat based off the "real" boss is a little lacking in my opinion because early on (and I'm still not entirely sure if this was just hit detection) I had a few times where I seemed to kill an enemy with the melee attack, but it ended up having no effect.  Even after multiple attacks.  And on the majority of enemies the feedback indicating you actually managed to land a hit isn't all to clear, maybe some sort of flash or slight stun animation could help?
  • The lightning attack feels a little too strong, personally as I said I enjoyed just hopping around with the melee, but the spammability of the lightning and the fact that it seems to knockback enemies means that you can essentially just spam it at them and either insta-kill or keep them back until they die.  Maybe making it so the abilities can reach 0% could help?  That way if you spam either you end up having to switch up your play style.
  • Invincibility frames seem to be sort of lacking throughout.  There were quite a few times where I would attack an enemy and as it ended get hit back and since I was still moving in the direction I attacked I would be knocked into the enemy again after being knocked back.  Maybe adding an extra frame or two to the melee attacks (I'm assuming) invincibility frames at the end could help, it could also help with people attempting to chain them, and if you added the fact it could reach 0% I feel it could balance out how spammable it is.
  • The concept of forcing you to mix up your playstyle by lowering the effectiveness of the opposite ability sounds interesting, unfortunately though since it changes anytime you actually use the ability I basically ended up spamming the opposite of the ability I wanted to use (ex. spam lightning to use melee) so I didn't have to worry about the mechanic basically at all.  So maybe making it only drop/raise on an enemy hit, or possibly only when in combat could solve it?  Either by designating combat areas or by checking a radius around the player?  That way if you leave one fight with near no melee power and go into another you're going to be relegated to using the lightning until you get melee power back.
  • The seeming lack of a cooldown, more specifically on the lightning makes it essentially endless damage without any danger, especially considering you can refill it's energy so easily.  A slight cooldown could help with that possibly?  Or I guess it could be solved with the 0% part I mentioned above.
  • "Converting"/Getting energy back feels a bit fast which in combination with the spammability allows you to, even if the ability only changed on enemy attack, get back your abilities a bit too fast in my opinion.  Though I'm only guessing since the game doesn't currently have the suggestion I made about energy only changing on hit so I can't test it.  In general though how fast you can switch back or change the balance of energy feels a bit too fast, but that may just be due to their being little feedback on how much damage you're dealing so I can't directly compare specific energy levels easily.

Okay... wall of text over.  Overall this was one of the most polished games in the game from what I've seen and I really enjoyed the feeling of just blinking and slashing some enemies up.  The only thing I'd ask is more levels!!!

Hey i like the way you make such a big detailed review! Would be glad if you could review mine as well https://itch.io/jam/blackthornprod-game-jam-3/rate/899679, thanks

The visuals in this game are amazing and I love the character design. That looks like a really iconic main character. The feedback on hits was also really well done. Great work!

Great game! I have very few complaints about it. The movement is by far the best part, dashing around with the left mouse is just so much fun. I also like your idea for the mechanic and make the player balance out the two attack modes. My one suggestion for improvement is to only exchange power if you hit an enemy, so that you can't just charge up the lightning attack by spam dashing around. It would reward the player for riskier gameplay. Overall, great job!

Great game!
The art, music, and atmosphere are incredible!
The only problem I saw was that if you spam the melee attack, you can fly and bypass the enemies.
Overall excellent job!

Awesome game! The movement feels really fluid and fast-paced! The art style was cool as well!

I must say this is one of the best games I've tried in this Game Jam. I like the aesthetics and how everything feels. It was tough at the beginning but got used to it fairly quickly. I managed to defeat the hardest mini-boss and boss it felt rewarding as hell! Very good job my friend 5 stars.

Wow, this game is awesome! I really enjoyed the silhouette feel to the levels but with the glowing red to contrast. The best thing was the polish to the movement and animations of the main character. It just made the game feel great to play.  Awesome entry!

I really liked this one. Visuals and mechanics are great. I liked the wallsliding and the way that you could only "fly" and easily win the level. This gives nice variation to beat levels. Made with great professionalism.

This was awesome. Nothing else to say. it was both ambitious and super polished, which I don't think many other games here can say.
