Loved the atmosphere in the game! I think increasing the font or putting the storytelling more central, with a more pronounced sound effect, could have made that more immersive. Played through it multiple times but was kind of sad I got transformed in each ending, even when I did well according to the person in charge.
The shooting SFX was a bit too loud.
I think what I loved most however is the level you put together. While you used great assets for your game, it's clear you enjoyed yourself putting together the level with that tileset. I also see you made the cower animations of the creatures when you're close yourself. That really added to the oppressive atmosphere. Good job! One remark about the level would be that I didn't always get a good sense of direction on where to go and got lost at times, but I can definitely see that this could be by design :).
Really enjoyed the atmosphere and setting here! What are these creatures I'm killing? Why am I killing them? Why does the comms guy hate them so much? That little bit of mystery was enough for me to play multiple times. Great job!
I enjoyed this game. I like the pixel art and the sound compliments the atmosphere of the game.
I grasped the idea pretty quickly, played through for a different ending.
Good job! :-)
I felt terrified for the first half of the game, the music and atmosphere was just really scary. I was hoping the game would continue after you reach that final square, it would've been a really neat plot twist. Also, loved the narrator. The first time i killed everything (though quickly realized that they couldn't actually do anything to you), The second time i rushed through avoiding all of them and loved seeing the changes in dialog. The third time i killed one and rushed through but the dialogs were mostly the same. Ah, and the switch in music in that last section is a bit abrupt.
Really enjoyed this one (though the music and atmosphere were scarier than the actual contents of the game ;) ). I'd love to see it expanded, perhaps as another exterminator comes and you have to lead your new civilization to safety or something. I'd also like to see the horror aspect developed more!
nice short game! The sprites are well done.
One issue I had was that the game was visually very dark. Even after increasing my display brightness, it was hard to see things clearly.
Very, very cool. love the atmosphere and art style. The music was great (where was it from / who did it?) The whole thing gave me a Space Station 13 vibe, in the best possible way. Would love to see this expanded into some kind of story to stop the exterminators - you change into one of those black things then need to stop or convince exterminators to stop killing the black things, then potentially get the exterminators on your side, and turn on the corporation that's hiring them....
Could be a whole thing! I'd love to do music if you end up expanding it, although the ambient track at the moment is superb :)
Hey, thanks for playing! Listened to your portfolio - I'd love to have you on a future project! I may expand this game, but I am moving from C# to Rust in Godot and I don't particularly want to translate it to Rust lol. But maybe.
Anyways, here's the credits: https://git.sr.ht/~kmdodrill/exterminator/tree/master/README.md
Ok cool, look me up if you ever need music for a project, looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!
Wow, that really came together. I loved the effect of the creepy music, the simple yet somehow also creepy tiles, the lighting... how everything was in shadow and then... pure white of the creatures' eyes.
The only nitpick I have is that sometimes, because of the low contrast, I guess, it was difficult to see if something was a "wall". Not a problem to walk around an object once you hit it... but it did take a little bit away from the atmosphere of it all.
I like the atmosphere of the game. Gave it a horror effect of the unknown. The music fits well, although after a while the music stopped for some reason.
Controls felt responsive and simple.
Overall I enjoyed playing the game.
Aaaaa. Man. I've transformed to that black victim-creature.
What I like here is how victims are hiding there faces. when EXTERMINATOR is near. Feels as part of storytelling. Also music is picked very suitable for such dark level. Great!
Very nice entry! The art style, lighting, and music set the mood so well. Had me anxious about what was coming next.
I did get a little lost at times, even after reading some comments below. I think also I entered the final room but missed the collision area (is that possible?) so I left that room thinking it was a dead end and back tracked a lot.
Great thinking with the ending (don't want to write any spoilers in my post). :)
Thanks for playing! It is actually possible to miss that last area, I wanted to get the player onto that square platform so the lighting / mood would be perfect, but making the collision shape bigger didn't seem to help. Wasn't sure how else to do it so I just tried making that block of flat square tiles look interesting haha.
As others have mentioned this was a really solid entry, played through it twice then read the spoilers. Not much else to add other than I enjoyed the atmosphere!
Also if you need help with pathfinding just ask in the Discord. I'd be more than happy to help! I managed to get 3D pathfinding working, I'm sure 2D can't be a whole lot different.
Thank you for playing, and thank you for offering help! I may have questions for you, but one possible problem (not sure what language you're using) could be that I was coding in C#, now I'm moving to using the Rust bindings for Godot. One of the issues was trying to translate GDScript over to C#, sometimes it can take a bit...I'm mainly a PHP dev - I can write C# decently at this point (having done multiple Godot projects), but it's still something I have to refresh my memory on when I start a new game project. :)
Ah I see, never used C# with Godot. However I've used Unity for quite a looong time, which is entirely C# so I'm very fluent in it. Should be no problem. Just let me know :)
I really enjoyed playing your game! The atmosphere and mood were really well done. Great job!
Thank you for playing! Your game is still my favorite out of this jam so far, the pixel art made me smile and the music was perfect with it! Made me laugh lol!
You're welcome!
I'm happy it made you smile. We wanted to make a funny game. That's great that the humor came though! lol
If some disembodied voice tells me to start killing a bunch of innocents, am I gonna do it? Well, maybe if they keep giving me positive reinforcement...
The game is really cohesive in terms of art, exposition, and sound. They really help each other build towards that feeling of creepiness you were going for.
Can I ask how many endings there are? I managed to get 3.
Thank you so much, I'm so glad it all came together like that for you :)
-- SPOILERS --
There are 4 endings, but 2 of them are a little obscure. Each one just gives a separate message at the end.
0 kills
1-9 kills
10-19 kills
20+ kills
I wanted to give the player the chance to "accidentally" kill a creature and not be punished as much if they decided to take a different path.
Ah, right on! I figured if there was another it was a matter of degrees. I think I got the 10-19 but missed the 1-9.
Awesome game. I really like the creepy vibe the game is set in - The music and the lightning especially.
Thank you for playing :)
Looks really cool. I wanna play it but I can't get the osx version to run. Not sure if it's just me
Hey, thanks for reaching out. I don't have a mac, but I have a friend who has one - he says that he used a program called "The Unarchiver" (I believe this is it: https://theunarchiver.com) to extract the files and it ran after that. I'm not entirely familiar with mac, so I'm sorry if that still doesn't work :(
EDIT: Updated the game page with info about this, lmk if it works for you :)
Finally got it to work! Very atmospheric. The sound design really adds to it. It was short enough that replaying to get different endings didn't feel tiring.
- Spoilers -
The endings could be a bit clearer. There are 2 endings that end with a message encouraging you to find the other endings but the ending where you do kill everything doesn't give you this message, I think? I kept backtracking and even restarted to see if I missed something and I'm wondering if that's the case or it really ends with the voice thanking you and leaving you to kinda just wander around
Thanks for playing! I appreciate the feedback. You're right, the way the endings are handled aren't the most clear.
-- SPOILERS --
Every ending should give you a different message at the end, depending on what you do. I made 4 separate endings, but they're all just different messages at the end :)
Odd that the "kill everything" path didn't give you that message...it should. Sorry for any confusion.
I love the narrative you created with this! As you said below, if you'd have gotten the pathfinding to work, the enemies running away from you would have been such a neat mechanic! I like the atmosphere you created with the lighting and audio.
Just wondering how many endings there actually are. I managed to get 3 :)
Thanks for the comment, I really appreciate it!

It is a pretty solid game! The controls are smooth; congratulations to make your game work with a joypad. The atmosphere is very cool and catchy. I like the "realm of the mad god"-like graphics! It also made me thing of doom somehow, but a doom you can do in pacifist mode ; pretty funny ! Overall : really cool and enjoyable.
However:
Well, don't worry too much about my comment: your game is globally very good, I'm just being punctilious because I see potential!
Hey, thanks so much for the feedback! Also, nice profile picture - dark souls 3 is probably my favorite game.
-- SPOILERS AHEAD --
You're absolutely right about the pathfinding, haha. Once I threw it out I decided to make a new project and really learn pathfinding so I can make more advanced games
Right, after finishing I did think that the link to theme might not resonate with everything, but to me - I made the game trying to take on a different meaning to "Family", something more like species or similar. I wanted the player to not only think about what they were doing, but also to be surprised by what they actually were at the end. However, I left the ending open to interpretation: Were you always this way and just wearing a suit? Were you transformed into the very thing you were told to destroy?
I agree about the different endings, they are way too short and my initial dialogue was much longer. However, I chose a resolution size of the original NES and had to make do with what I had :)
Thank you again for the detailed comment!
Really cool game with atmosphere, won't spoil it here but i also like the story's end reveal, multiple endings are cool when done well and that's the case here.
Small things that bothered me, the level layout itself feels a bit confusing, and i had some issues going through some 1x1 tile passages, but other than these the game felt really solid if just a bit short.
Also really like the graphics and atmosphere you pulled with the lighting, and the music is fitting to said atmosphere during gameplay and quite a banger for the ending music .
Good job on this one :)
Thank you for playing!
I was wondering when that might come up - the small amount of people I had playtest the game had a little difficulty getting through some of those smaller areas as well. I thought about reducing the collisions on the tiles, but there were only 3 hours left until submission time was up so I just let it go. Definitely learned for my next game!
Haha, well it seems i had to be that one guy to point it out XD more seriously though it wasn't really game breaking, but it could be an issue when navigating and accidentally thinking"welp if i'm stuck i can definitively never go that way"
But it's an understandable oversight considering the time constraints and all, and the game is really well made overall so it's more of a nitpick ^^
Oh no, not nitpick-y at all! I'm super grateful for any feedback. :)
very nice game. played and rated.
Thank you for playing my game!
I finished the game 3/4 times to check out if I missed anything.
I don't think I understood that well the endings. Apart from the visual thing, which can be interpreted in different ways.
I was really eager to know more about the world you've set up.
I really like the audio, and graphics. The music and your use of the lighting made for a great atmosphere. Even though sometimes it's maybe a bit too dark there.
Maybe a small idea for improvement: make the enemies move toward you or do other things (that still fit your world building) that would make them more lively and intriguing too I think :)
Good work!
Hey, thank you for checking it out! Cool to see that you played it multiple times.
-- SPOILERS --
I think the text at the end mentioning multiple endings was mostly me thinking that the majority of players will play through and listen to whoever is talking to you by killing all of the creatures and getting the "bad" ending. I wish I could have done more with the different endings but a little message was all I could manage with the time restraint. :)
You're right, it is perhaps a bit too dark. I would definitely at least add some more lighting to give the player more of a sense of where to go. As far as the movement of the enemies, initially I was going to have them run away from the player, but I couldn't get the pathfinding working very well. I was also going to set up some static turrets that shoot at you, but decided to focus on story and atmosphere instead.
Thanks again for playing :)
Yes we can see that. The game is well polished overall anyway. Good work!
