Omg the humour XD, had a good laugh with some of the jokes here ! Also i liked the gameplay, the top down combat felt simple enough to handle quickly, and very responsive, i like how you have the temples double as healing zones as well as save zones with the legacy system you have, i also like that you made different races with different attack methods hp counts etc...

Regarding the wildcards i guess that the general humorous tone of the game counts as a snarky narrator, i found the hidden dog :D, which doubles as a hidden passage, and passage of time is there with the aging/legacy mechanics, so good job there on implementing all 4 cards :o

So congrats overall, solid game :)

Developer

Glad you liked our sense of humor! Hey, you are the first person to say they "found" the 4 wildcards, congrats ;)

Thank you for playing!

Enjoyed this - the narrative made me laugh. Well done! Nice music and overall style too :)

Developer

Thank you! Glad you liked it ;)

Good game. The idea it's interesting. I was playing the first Legend of Zelda before I tried the game. And I think it affected badly on my experience. Don't get me wrong, the game you made it's good. For me the bad thing, that I can't go and explore the world of the game, the game don't focus on that, it focus on the idea of babies, and I have to find some one to laid with and get a baby, so I can have more time to find anothing one, and do nothing with the world of the game. I hope you add more life time.

For the other things in the game (art, music, narrator), are wonderful.
Congrads for the submission.

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

Hehehe, don't worry, we won't be offended if we come up short against Legend of Zelda! Yeah... we didn't really put much focus at all in the exploration. We extended the life time just enough so you'd be able to kill the enemies and get to the next house. If we ever expand this idea past a "jam game", we'll probably extend the life-time so you'd be able to explore more :)

Good graphics and sound. I like the time mechanic, it's an additional layer of complexity to include in the game entry for the jam. The time bar had minimal detail yet I fully understood it's meaning, great design! Enjoyed playing. Great job! :-)
(I think I crashed on the dragon)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the aging ui! We were worried it was too "abstract" to understand.

(It's possible... the dragon is a bit... crash-able)

Submitted

I fully understood it and I love how clean it looks. The battle between making sure UI is understood and remains stylish and uncluttered is difficult. For me personally you got it perfect!

A very interesting idea! I love the core concept of having a timer for "lifespan", in addition to your health bar.
I completed the game, and the ending punch line genuinely made me chuckle. (the dragon was also bizarrely scary. Something about the proportions.)

My main issue would be with level design/structure. I think this idea would work brilliantly with a "Hub" that the player returns to, and the Hub changes as time/generations pass.
So a town/village/commune the player could visit.
This would change the current design (corridors/paths/linear progression) into an "octopus" structure (central hub, with many paths in different directions that intertwine). This would force the player to spend their lives creating shortcuts/an easier time, for their offspring; mimicking real life a little.

Controls were a little stiff, but as a working proof of concept; it's fine.

Very good start, and potential here!
Definitely revisit this "lifespan as a timer" idea.

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the idea. I think this one definitely goes into the "maybe extend into a full game" list.

We hadn't thought about that kind of map, to be honest. In such a short game, we wanted to somehow "guide" the player through the levels. But you are right that some sort of town the player could revisit could work in a longer game. We'll keep it in mind!

Submitted

Interesting take on the theme. Controls could be robuster, but this is fine for a hummor game.

It would be awesome it thus supported "halfbreeds" gradually melding the differen races/tribes/peoples together one generation at the time.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah... I guess testing often gets left out in a jam... :D

Submitted

Wow. So original idea. And age changing is super fresh mechanics. Old orc with the club looks still cool :D

Developer

Thank you! We had fun designing the characters to be fast to animate and to fit in all three ages :)

Submitted

I like the idea of getting old and and when you die the player can control your child and you can just run straight to the exit without fighting anything so you might want to change that

Developer

Thank you for playing! We spent 2 hours brainstorming just after the announcement and that was finally the idea we liked when we were half-asleep at 1am :D

Yeah, with an orc, or even with a human or gnome, you can run past the enemies if you are good enough at avoiding the projectiles... but well, I hope that's fun in a way too.

Submitted

This was a lot of fun! Had quite a bit of content too! I'm not sure if it's intended or not... I went with the Orc and just ran away from everything, and tried to only take damage when necessary. I think that strategy made it much easier than intended?

Design and balance of these things is quite difficult, some people will try to kill everything, even when there is no reward for it, taking massive damage in the process. Others will only take the risk and kill when it is incentivized by some reward.

I ended up playing it much like you would except a speedrunner to. Frantically running around until I found the boss... Who was much larger and cooler than I expected! aaaand that's how I met your mother. ;)

Great entry guys, very fitting of the theme, had fun with it!

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! Yeah, we wanted the diferent characters to feel different but we didn't want the game to be too hard... in the end, it was way too easy if you picked just the right ones :D But maybe that's part of the fun ;)

I think the way you played it, is the way I tested it... just runing through everything with the orc until I got to the part I wanted to test xD

Submitted

Absolutely loved this game. The concept of growing old and passing on the journey to your child is very cool and I'm impressed with how fleshed out you were able to make the game in just a week! The controls were a bit clunky in the fact you had to be standing in exactly the right spot to read a sign but a minor con compared to the many things I enjoyed about this game.

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked the concept ;)

Yeah... the sign's collision box could have been a little larger... might have been a last-minute addition to clear up some mechanics :P

Submitted

Nice job, I really liked this one! Interesting concept, the pixel art looks great and the music fits in well. The only issue I had was the controls - I'd really prefer there to be an option for WASD because I have to hold the Fn key when using arrows on my keyboard. That's just me though, the majority of players I'm sure are fine :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm sorry the controls were unconfortable :( I thought about adding the WASD option at the beginning of the jam (although my keyboard has arrow keys, my fingers automatically go to WASD), but we never got around to it.  We'll make sure to do it in the next one, though!

Orc OP. I just face tanked that dragon without any issue.

The humor in the game really tied it all together. Explosive gnome sex, sure! I think improving the combat could be nice, as I had no real indication of whether I hit the enemy or not. Improving the range at which the rangers shoot might make a nice improvement as well.  As for the dragon,  making the fireballs larger, and giving them more damage might balance this out, but this is really a solid entry.

Developer

Hehehe... he really is. Both orc and elf are OP in their own way... but we didn't want to make the game too hard :P Still working on finding that sweet spot.  We probably need to work on finishing the main mechanics earlier so we have more time to playtest and balance.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the humor! We really ran with that wildcard :D

Submitted

Had lots of fun with this one :D

Like other said a better indication of the exit and some damage indication on the end boss would be nice. I wasn't sure I was actually doing damage to him :p

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad you had fun ;)

We definitely need to work on giving more feedback to the player when something works and doesn't. We thought the hit sound would be enough, but I think it was too chaotic to really stand out...

Fun game, I've not played this style of game for a long time so was pretty bad at it (perhaps I shouldn't be taking the shortcut!). The music adds a really nice atmosphere, keeps me on edge.

I agree that the exits could be more well signed, I wasn't sure sometimes if I could go a certain way.

And yes child rearing to keep the game going is a nice idea. :)

Developer

Thanks! The shortcut cuts on some "training time", that's why its the only place you are warned and can go back ;)

Yes, we tought about adding some way to make exit points more visible, but we didn't come up with something fast enough, so the feature was cut :P

Submitted

Good concept, and good job getting in 4 different types of characters! I managed to get to the end, but I think you can hit the boss off screen with the elf and not worry about it fighting back, haha.

One suggestion would be to make the exits of areas easier to see. There were some places where it didn't look different from other borders that I couldn't travel through. I also kinda wish I could go backwards, since I'd get the baby that could hit a lever or break a fence, but I was already past the area that contained it.

I also enjoyed your pop culture references :)

Developer

Thanks! We tried to make the characters as different as possible, so it ended up changing the difficulty of the game a lot depending on which races you choose. The elf is definitely op against the boss!

Thanks for the feedback! We thought about adding a way to walk back, but in the end we cut it just to force the player to keep going :D

Hey,

nice little game you made, really like it. played and rated. really like the idea of the child as a way to save progress.

please feel free to play and rate my game:

Developer

Thanks! That was the seed of the whole game, even before we decided on the genre :P

Enjoyed the game a a lot! The aging mechanic was a neat idea that I enjoyed. The art style fit the game, as well as the sound effects.  The various enemies added some variety to combat.

Combat was simple, but felt good enough. Using the bow added a bit more difficulty as I had to coordinate shooting backwards then move forwards.

Overall felt like a solid game.

Developer

Thanks! We had to make lots of sprites for the combinations of ages and facing directions, so I'm really glad it all was worth it!

Pro tip: the game is actually easier if you tank through it with an orc... it's a bit broken :D

Submitted

Fun game ! I liked the aging mechanic :) The game is so hard (or I'm just bad) !

Developer

Thanks!

Yeah... we need to work on balancing difficulty better. I'm usually so bad at these kinds of games, that when I can beat my own game, it seems too easy... but it's really that I've practiced too much while testing :D

Submitted

That ending line though.
