I'm impressed by how much you achieved graphically with the different fades and the darkness, good job! It's obvious you care deeply about presentation. Modifying the sprites for the joint running animation was such a sweet little touch 👌

I think for the platforming you might check out adding some more polish to the mechanics by adding coyote jumping. And the whole cutscene being replayed after dying to the flames would be better made skippable, though I do understand that's the level scene you're reloading!

This may also be my favorite credits screen in this jam, I really loved how you went showing the credits in a super chill yet interactive format.

By the way, for sharing your source, most developers use GitHub or another git platform.

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you noticed the sprites! I'm severely lacking in any artistic ability so I often have to make the most out of the sprites I have. Trying to introduce abilities or mechanics to a character without the matching art is very limiting. And sprites with a wide range of poses are (justifiably) more expensive than I can currently afford. This simple modification gave me something to work with. :-)
I will check out making a better controller and including coyote jumping. It's not something I have done before and will require some study before hand.
I understand the cutscene being annoying :-p I just hadn't noticed how annoying since I had gotten very used to completing that section quickly. I opted for the quick scene reload as you say, this would change in a full version.
I'd be happy to try and work out how to use github if there was interest in the source. (all be it a bit of an embarrassing train wreck)
Thanks again for your kind comment! :-)

Lovely game! Especially for a first Jam. It was short unfortunately, but everything included was very polished: the title screen, the atmosphere of the first level, the light/shadow effect of the second level, etc... The second level was especially well done.

I noticed a little bug: you can let go of your sister just before the transition (the second level still proceeds normally).

I would have loved to see more, I hope you will be doing a post-jam version (it seems you will looking at your replies), so I can check it out. :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your comment! :-)
Yea, I have an area2d which checks for if you have your sister with you then moves an invisible collision to let the player pass.
So you can use her as a key and leave her for dust as things stand :-p
I will try and muster the motivation to complete the project. Thanks again :-)

Nice game! I really liked the art style. I also liked how you showed and hid the platforms.

Developer

Thank you :-)

It was a very nice experience! Good combination of music, art and a good use of the theme. Great job!

Developer

Thank you! I really love your game! I need to learn a similar leaf effect to yours for this game when the seasons change (in a full version)

Really nice art and sound :)

Cool game I like it!

Developer

Thank you very much :-)

Great job on the graphics and audio, to create this atmosphere. I was really into it, too bad it didn't go further.

The animations, mostly the running with your sister and pushing water onto the fire, were impressive.

One remark is that it's a bit too dark, at least on the characters' location. I played around myself with lights but never managed to find a way to fix that, so I wouldn't be able to help on that. But the characters we a bit difficult to see. Maybe a warm light on them, to show the fire reflecting on them or something?

Anyway, great work. I hope you'll continue!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your comment :-) I will make a full version :-)
I'll look into the issue with it being too dark. Of course it's part of the theme for the early levels to be dark as this is a tragic displacement event. However I do want it to be playable. I found it to be ok for me, but I guess that could be my set up or simply my familiarity with it.
I'm certainly going to look into fixing that :-)

The mood is really sad and yet hopeful. I would have liked to see more of this.

Developer(+1)

Thank you, I'm considering completing it.  :-)

Short but super well made ! I like the presentation overall, pixel art is really good, the music is really well used to convey the emotion, don't want to spoil for anyone who hasn't tried it yet, but that one time, very clever use of lighting.

Just wish the game would have been a bit longer but hey, gamejam deadlines XD

Other than that pretty solid and i liked it quite a bit, well done ^^

Developer

Thank you I really appreciate the comment :-)

Great game! I really like the art

Thank you :-)

Really nice entry! I like the idea of using fire as a mechanic, everyone instinvitely knows "fire bad" XD

The platforming was pretty decent, not too easy but not too difficult as well, and I think I found someone else who uses darkness as a mechanic too, haha.

The art and music were really good as well, however I was playing with headphones and it seems like you are using AudioStreamPlayer2D for the music? It is positional audio, meaning at times the music was only in one ear. Very simple fix and no big deal.

Overall a really nice entry, good work!

Developer

Yep guilty O:-)
Yes I did indeed do that with the AudioStreamPlayer2D, even though I had the mind to place the sound effects I totally blanked on how it would effect the music! I'll fix that!
Thank you for your comment :-)

Very nice looking game, love the art and atmosphere. Good job with the lighting, and the music / sfx also fit very nicely with this. My only complaint is that I really wish you had WASD controls in your game, I have to hold the Fn key on my keyboard to use the arrow keys so it's pretty uncomfortable to make those jumps and stuff. But overall good job! nice animations too

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'll keep the controls in mind for the future. :-)

I really liked the game. art and music are good.

The start was good, and I wish that all the game was like that, you may add puzzels between the characters. The second level dosn't have a good platforming controllers, they feel not responsive. You can check out the code source of my game, you my find somthing helpful.

I'd like to see the finished game. Good luck!

Developer

Thank you! :-)  I will certainly look at my controller and thank you for the offer of looking at your code :-)

Hey,

nice little game you made, really like it. played and rated.

please feel free to play and rate my game:

Wow. It's short but so polished. Rarely you can meet cut scenes in games made for game jam. Perfect job. I enjoyed and war ready to continue playing.

Developer

Thank you :-)  I appreciate it.

Pixel art is great, well done. Fun to play, even though its short. Like others said, one play of the fire animation is enough. :)

One thing which confused me on the first level was they I think needed to put out the first fire, but then I was just able to run through the second fire? Or maybe I missed something.

Would be interesting to see if you develop this further.

Well done on the submission!

Developer(+1)

The first level is intended as a playable intro, so more for flavour than challenge. The scope was bigger but I failed to fulfil it for the Jam entry.
Thank you for your feedback! I fully understand about the fire animation.  :-)

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the pixel art. The controls felt good and responsive, especially when running away from the fire in the dream.

The whole game felt immersive.

Developer

Thank you, I appreciate it. :-)

A nice, engaging game! Loved the pixel art. Thought the platform part was very clever. It took me a while to get to the top! Great job - well done!

BTW at the beginning, it says to press ctrl to start. Only enter worked!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the comments, I'll look into the issue with the Ctrl button. :-)

Excellent game ! The art is just... wow !

The game is a bit dark though (I couldn't see very well what was happening on screen).

Developer

Thank you. I never thought about how dark it is. Something to think about...

Submitted(+1)

Super well done. Having to re-watch that fire animation over and over got annoying though :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I understand that complaint, I took the quick solution of reloading the scene, but I think if I just reset the second animator and reposition the character I can avoid that. Thank you.

Submitted(+1)

This was so well done! Art, sound, and movement. It all worked really well together. Even with the game being super short, I actually felt immersed for that short period. Very impressive!

Developer

Thanks very much :-) I'm considering completing the project.
