Using the robot as platform and for movement is cool. And the background looks so beautiful! A solid game overall!

Submitted(+1)

Nice work all around! Far more than a level, controls felt real nice - and I highly appreciate the good design in relating the primary character colors to the text box popups. Even had a whole little story and everything. Well done!

Whoua this game is not a game jam game i thing we are just play testers. Cuz that have to be released as a full game. That's impressive game mecanics, art styles everthing.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! That means a lot coming from you and your amazing entry. I tend to overdo it on the first round of GDKO and burn myself out. I did for sure last year and said I wouldn't this year, but I just love this unique jam and the awesome community around it and this one in particular was a lot of fun to work on.

I'll have to scale things back in future rounds for sure. It was perfect timing with round one. My wife had two different 4 day trips, one during the jam portion and now the judging portion, so I pulled all the late nights and free time I wanted to work on it and then to stream a ton of entries, but I won't have time like that for future rounds. I am already thinking of a dozen other little mechanics, obstacles and adventures for this duo and hope to pursue it later this year! Thanks again for playing.

Submitted(+1)

Really loved this! it was awesome flying around on your robot!! Looking forward to getting to this point of gameDev one day! haha

Developer

Thanks for the kind words, but you have an awesome entry and GDKO is a great place for us all to keep growing and learning.

I enjoyed the different mechanics and the level design uses them well. The graphics and animations are great, I also liked the attention to detail on the text box. The effects you put on some of the words are really cool.

A couple of nitpicks:

  • I don't know if this is intended but the parallax backgrounds only seem to parallax on the X axis, they all move at the same rate as the camera vertically
  • It would be great to be able to use the analog stick for movement, I find it more comfortable than the D-pad on my controller

I know this wasn't a focus of this round but I also wish the game was a bit longer, looking forward to seeing what happens next!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the excellent feedback.

I will incorporate parallax on the y axis. I wasn't sure how strong to make it and then I think I never revisited it.

Adding analog stick controls should be simple enough! Thank you so much for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Submitted(+1)

Love the variations in gameplay with your little robot buddy, also a fan of the parallax, particles, and tiny animations like the stars. The location itself is quite cliche but a great game nonetheless.

p.s. something fun happens if you die to the very first laser :)

Developer(+1)

Ah! The first to find it or say something about it at least. I realized 15 minutes after submission that I never set the initial respawn checkpoint to the original janitor space. I set up checkpoints all throughout and missed the first. Was kicking myself. At least it’s kind of funny though. Glad you liked it!

(+1)

Really nice entry. The environment is interesting and the art is great. I know this isn't a gameplay round, but the gameplay is also really cool, I love using your little robot buddy to traverse different obstacles.

Submitted(+1)

Great game and story, I did find the space controls a bit sluggish and clunky, but since that wasn't the task I didn't let it affect the rating. My only complaint would be the fact that sometimes the text goes outside of the screen. Overall It's a great entire and I hope that you get to round 2!

Developer

Thank you for playing and the feedback. I need to do some work on the text for sure. One question, when you say it goes outside do you mean the dialogue goes outside of the text box, or is it the section right before you ride the RescueBot where it goes outside of the camera view? Just trying to narrow down the issue to fix it. Thanks again!

Submitted(+1)

This was great bud.  Very well thought out and executed.  Loved the gravity flying mechanics primarily.  One small item I would say is when you need your follower friend to jump onto etc is that he snaps / lerps into position faster so that the player doesn't have to wait.  The one point I really noticed this was when he was needed to jump over the laser horizontally.

One of the best entries, nice work.

Developer

Thank you for playing and the great feedback. I think I might rework the pathfinding on the RescueBot all around, but you hit the main issue ... I hate having the player waiting around to keep moving. Thanks again!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, I'm amazed by all the mechanics you've implemented in this short amount of time ! programming is still a kind of magic for me so that makes you... a wizard. And on top of that, art is really cool, there is a beautiful dialog system, cutscenes, juicy animations ... I'm jealous ! Very well done !

Developer(+1)

Nothing to be jealous of. Your character could wall slide, wall jump (across and up), and moved incredibly smoothly. And that level was excellently designed. I'm flattered by your kind words. Thank you for playing!

Submitted(+1)

I love the art, but the If I remember correctly the "mop" riding section is a bit slippery and I would have liked to see a unique riding animation and not just a static player, The last two things I have to say is the shine animation on the helmet  I don't think should be there in some parts because if there is light it won't go away in the same room just because you move but I guess its an artistic choice, The wall climbing is a bit finicky sometimes when it works it's great but when it does not it's a minor annoyance. The art was overall great I love the bounciness of the player the mop was cool just a little static lol,  I would love to see more of this.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and the solid feedback. I put the tiniest of animation in when you’re flying space, but it’s so subtle. I could definitely improve that. And carrying over the helmet shine no matter the sprite pose is a good idea and wouldn’t be too hard to implement. I’ll tweak the grab range for the ledge grab. All solid suggestions. I can’t thank you enough.

Submitted(+1)

great use of the robot for some cool varied mechanics. clean movement and control, very very nice gameplay.

Developer

I appreciate you taking the time to play and comment. Thank you. I’m hoping to play your entry on stream tomorrow.

Submitted(+1)

I am amazed on how many uses you found for the robot companion! Very cool!
The art style is sick, well done, that shiny helmet and the way you grab on to edges is so cute! (great inclusion by the way mechanic-wise)

Can't wait to see what else you make with mr Mops!

I hope to hear your story of switching to gamemaker, how did that happen? :D

Developer(+1)

He’s a nifty little rescue bot. A compliment on art is high praise from you, spoonsweet. More Mr. Mops would be cool. I hope we do continue this entry in round 2, but mostly because I want to see more of Scrapyard! I’ve used GameMaker ever since first trying my hand at dev life. Or, I used GameMaker Studio 2, but they simplified their name last year to just GameMaker when they were bought by Opera and have been making regular, welcomed updates and improvements. Come on, join the GameMaker Gang!

Submitted(+1)

hehe! We witnessed Mr Mops orogin story, next round cant wait to see him prevail against the Great Spill of The Milkyway!

Truly the mechanics of space flight vs ship's platforms are a nice combination of the scifi experience.

Thanks for the info! I did use GameMaker(studio? I dont remember what it was) years ago as well, with visual programming, but then read all the stuff about versions that you had to pay to publish your game or they would take a cut etc, so in my naivety I thought why not start with GODOT which doesn't want any of these things, and stick to it. (I'm still sticking to it, begone temptator!)

Jam Host(+1)

Thanks for letting me know about this on Twitter <3 I appreciated that you had some dialogue at the start for flavour and investment but then eased off it for the actual gameplay.

Developer

No, THANK YOU! I appreciate you streaming and even more that you called out areas for me to improve. I had a blast watching you play.

Submitted(+1)

Great game! Very well-designed level, satisfying controls, and just enough difficulty.

Developer

Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to comment. I’m hoping to stream your entry tomorrow!

Submitted(+1)

Such a clean game! it feels super polished and nice, and the art is super cool. the dialogue is also really fun

Developer

I appreciate you taking the time to play and comment. I’m glad you liked the dialogue, because I really liked the writing in your entry.

Thank you so much. I think there’s some other unexplored mechanics that would work, so I’m hoping we continue with this entry.

Submitted(+1)

love that, waiting for next part

Developer

Thanks for playing and the kind words. I appreciate it. Maybe Mr. Mops will track down some of that Hell Kitten elixir!

xD

Very fun! Obviously would like to have sound but I understand leaving it out for round 1. Controls were very intuitive and smooth, and the ledge grabbing felt very satisfying.

Developer

Every jam I remind myself what a difference sfx and bg music makes to the total polish of the game. I even picked out some sfx from Kenney assets. But I hit that make or break point and never put them in. The bummer is adding sounds isn’t that difficult, just kept putting other things first. You’ve just inspired me to move audio up in my dev timeline for the next time! Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Submitted(+1)

This is the first game I played in this jam and I think it is really cool. Love the little bit of humour at the start, the art is top notch and the way you traverse the level is awesome, especially with the other character being a handy platform that never gets in the way

Developer(+1)

GameFavorites! Great to see you again. Thanks for the kind words. I was hoping to keep building on the two characters’ relationship, but that deadline hit quick!!

Submitted(+1)

Good to see you in GDKO again too, still remember your games from last year. Love the interactions between the two characters, and the way the ledge hang works is perfect. You got some really good technical stuff in there and I will be looking forward to seeing how your game evolves
