In what way does your game fit the theme?
You can split your soul at your current position, and at any point rewind to it by pressing space.

Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yep. All of the sound assets are third party except for the music which we made during the jam. All of the models and textures were made by me, as well as all of the code.

Nobody was online when I tried, so I queued up with myself. It worked pretty well! I don't know if you're familiar with Ibb & Obb, but the two-person co-op puzzles in this reminded me of that. The art was simple, but very good. The puzzles were pretty easy (probably because communication is the real challenge), but there was a good difficulty curve and the final challenge was a good brain-teaser, The audio assets you used were implemented perfectly so it fell like a professional game in that department. Great job! I'm super impressed you implemented multiplayer for a jam game.

Developer

Thanks for the review! Yeah, the playerbase kind of died down a few days after the jam ended, which was a shame but pretty much expected. Ibb & Obb was actually one of the inspirations for the game!

I had a lot of fun playing your game. First of all: The Graphics are amazing. How did you do that? Everything is smooth and fits to every other parts of your world. I had to play alone with two windows opened but after some levels I had to quit since they I wasn´t able to play them alone. The levels I played were great. The sounds and the music fit very well. Perhaps I´ll try play your game again with a friend.

I´ve submitted a local multiplayer game: https://itch.io/jam/brackeys-4/rate/722755. I would be happy to get your feedback on it. :-D
I´ll also post a comment on your topic.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the rating! I did the smooth graphics using gradient textures and sume UV mapping, as well as some gradient height shaders and to top it off an outline image effect. I'll play your game as soon as I find someone to play it with me!

Submitted(+1)

Sounds interesting. Do you mean this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_zY3iv1PIw  with gradient textures and UV mapping? And what do you mean with a gradient height shader? For me it would be a dream to be able to create games with such a smooth look.

Developer(+1)

Yep! That's the tutorial I followed. It was my first attempt at such an effect too, so I was pretty proud of it. The shaders I'm using are from Flat Kit on the Unity asset store, but the default unlit shader should work fine too.

Submitted

Did you use a custom renderer for the outline effect or another shader?

Developer(+1)

It's an image effect shader. So it goes on the camera.

Sadly I couldn't find anyone to play with even from discord, luckily I found playthrough video and can say something by what I saw: This game looked fun, reminded me a little about portal 2:s co-op mode. Graphics are nice and simple and puzzles are well thought for 2 players.

Submitted(+1)

A simple puzzle game but with a great twist. The audio and visuals made the game feel satisfying to play.

Very nice game, i like a lot the theme of the game, is really fun and have a great feedback ! I rate your game, take a look in mine. :)

Wow, multiplayer is amazing! The idea of being able to set your soul/rewind point at will is very interesting. The jump feels a little too slow, but it's a great game!

Yo’ Templar here,
Very fun game, the movement feels a bit janky with the whole teleport with momentum but is fun nonetheless. A few levels seem to be skipped tho.
Also, doesn’t really feel like it fits the theme, feels more like teleport than a rewind.

Submitted (1 edit)

The game doesn't fit exactly into the theme imo, but it was extremely fun to play with a friend, it has a lot more content than what I expected from a online multiplayer co-op made in 7 days too, great game.

Almost forgot to mention: when we were playing there were level skips, where a level would appear for a split second and immediately get changed to the next one, I think about 3 levels were skipped because of that bug

Developer(+1)

Really? I was sure I fixed that bug... sorry about that. :(

Played this game with my friend and we were so impressed with the quality of the game. Loved the music too!

This game looks very polished! I would love to try playing this game but unfortunately the online function was taking too long for me to find another player to play with. So I'm basing this review based off some youtube gameplay, and I'll do my best to translate my thoughts of just observation alone:

1) The walking sounds are funny and adds to the charm - I'm going to just say it first. It's so cute and amazing. I love it. It's like tiny singing voices. (I still hear them in my head)

2) Co-op/multiplayer games are largely determined by possible interactions that can be done between players (the best co-op games arguably are tabletop where everything affects everyone as a result) - and from here, there is a healthy amount of interaction from the puzzle design and the interactions between players.

Some notable things I particularly like and I think contributes is how you can jump on top of one another - but also walk pass through each other. I think this just makes it easy to manuever around each other without bumping and stuff. Very nice attention to game design in being very particular with how you handle player-to-player interactions, I admire you skills in this!

3) I think this is highly subjective territory but I'm generally unsure on the rewind aspect of your game - which I assume is the teleport back to your soul. I can agree that it does add to the puzzle aspect of the games but its quite loosely connected to the rewind theme.

Nevertheless, a loose connection is better than no connection - especially for such a smooth, polished game - I still enjoy (watching) it!

4) You have good priorities set, focusing only on primarily pretty much 3 mechanics : buttons and respective gates, rewinding to souls, jumping on one another - to create a few levels and using the rest of the time to fine-tune/polish these mechanics that will go to round up your game.

5) Your cartoonish art direction adds to the charm, refer to part 1. Kudos man.

I don't think there are much cons to list - if anything, I only wished there were more levels! If this ends up becoming a bigger game, naturally you'd want to introduce more puzzle elements, voice chat system.. etc etc. That will certainly make this a big project. I very much like how you approach this theme, very unique and very strong to your identity.

Looking forward to more from you and hey - if you did decide to expand on this, I'd want to follow it and maybe try looking for an online partner again!

Cheerios.

Developer

I agree, I wish I had more levels! But designing good puzzle levels took way more time than I expected. I would love to expand on this game, but in all honestly I have a few jam games I would like to expand on and it's hard to pick. Thanks for complimenting my art style! This is actually the first time I attempted a cartoony style and I was very happy with the result. That's very encouraging to hear. Thank you so much for your detailed review! Wow that's a wonderfully polished game! The graphics are amazing and the player walking sounds are on point. I was really curious at first when I saw it was an online co-op game made for a jam, didn't known what to expect, but you definitely nailed that part! Would totally love to learn about how you made the communication work between players with the online chat and emotes :D.

Developer (1 edit)

I used Photon Networking to sync data between players. The chat is just a RPC function where I pass a string over the network, and the emote function is the same but with an integer index which grabs a sprite from an array. Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Reminds me of stuff like Piku Niku. The co-op 2D puzzler is one of my favorite genres and this hits its mark perfectly! Extra levels and some polish would turn this into a $15 game.

Cool game! Made much fun!

Submitted(+1)

One of the best games I played!! I can see this as a game some youtubers would play. You could add more levels, more game mechanics, etc. and release this

Developer

Thanks! I'm planning on it now, people really seem to enjoy it <3

Submitted(+1)

Pretty good game. I will say it does make it hard to coordinate at times but that's just me not using chat correctly. Nice work guys!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks!

Amazing game! I really liked that I had no idea who I was playing with but we both had the goal of completing the game, and splitting your soul to then rewind to that place was a very well executed theme interpretation. Loved the emotes too, and the puzzles were fun (though that last one sure gave me a run for my money). Great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing! And thanks for the kind words too <3

This game was amazing! I just played it with my brother, I can see it become a full fledged thing, adding way more levels. There are a lot of possibilites with this game, I'm excited to see if you plan to keep working on it in the future!

Developer

Thanks! I'm tempted to add some more levels and release it to steam, people seem to really like it.

Submitted(+1)

What an amazing game! I gotta say, that last level took me and my brother a while, but the whole experience was great! Congrats on the game

Developer

Thanks! Glad you had a good time.

Submitted

cool game overall

Ton of fun! That last level made me consider if I was actually stupid. Love everything about this game

Developer

Thank you! That last level had me stumped too when I came back to it the next day...
