cool game!! the music is relly cool!!

The game is a solid foundation but needs a fair amount of work. To start I love the music and the menu screen. Great work! On the other hand, the player's ship is very jittery whenever it moves, its, its very distracting. The movement is also a bit confusing it follows the WASD even when the player isn't turning in those directions. Using W should propel the ship flying in the direction it's facing, that's a bit more intuitive.  Some SFX would be nice just to have feedback whenever you hit or are hit. Like I said really solid foundation just gotta keep at it! Great work!

man, that intro screen is totally misleading!! i was expecting a 3d bullet hell, or something like starfox 64, but the game is in top down view (not that i dislike it but again, is a little misleading ),  im coming from your post, so i will stick to the format that you proposed :

before i begin, i'm going to tell you that i'm writing this because you wanted feedback, and if the feedback is not sincere you will not have the chance to improve, i could just have wrote,

great game! ,i liked the music, and that's it but where is the learning in that??

it may seem like im trashing the game, but no.  one thing is to say you did this wrong or i don't like what you did, and  other thing is to say , you did this, but you can improve it in this or that way...

- AI :  the enemies just ran into you, i only lost health when i hit them myself, i would have preferred just one well done enemy type, that the generic ones that are into the game (at least put a material into the models lol), their movement was ok, but they not presented a challenge, maybe you could improve that by making the AI movement with predefined patterns, like pac-man,  whatch this video to know what im talking about

it has a little intro, but around the 5 minute mark it starts talking about the AI and its patterns.

- Player movement :  i'm really curious about the code for the player movement, the ship moves, but at the same time shakes a lot, like if there was some clamped value or you had left out a variable that resets every time you move, anyway, you could move , but the movement was not smooth (the aim with the mouse worked perfectly), if you show me the code i can help you with the movement.

- Weapon system :  i really didn't see this in the game, i picked up some power ups but most of them were health or the level up one. my advice is that you can instead of putting spheres that look like the enemies  with illegible text (again, you could just drop a material into the spheres), you could have used a SPRITE to communicate what the power up means (since you are in a top down view, it's almost 2d basically)  i mean, you do had an artist in your team right??

to quote you in  a reply form other post "Yea our artist have unbelievable talent. "  then why  didn't  he/she use it??

- Theme :  i maybe have missed this, so i'm not going to talk about it.

- Overall visuals (Main Menu, and Player ship) : ups,  i already mixed this with the other answers.

i really liked the music of the game, no complains there, serves the purpose and fits the intention of the game.

Very reasonable points, thank you for your honest and soulcrushing feedback! Lmao just kidding but I do appreciate the criticism. Time was honestly our hardest constraint. We only spent a little over 4 days working on this and that was only for a few hours after our day job was over, but if given more time, I know we couldve crushed it. There were so many things we wanted to improve and throw in, which a lot of, you have mentioned. Totally agree that the enemies should have been color coded. Though compared to the things on my list of requirements, this was pretty low on the priority list. My other programmer couldnt participate on the last day so i had to continue working in all of the mechanics at the last minute and there ended up being way more than i thought needed to be done. There are actually 5 different enemy types which i unfortunately didnt have the time to balance. Lots of the behavior for these enemy types actually feel pretty cool, and in the editor, the player actually feels so much smoother. I had no idea how big of a dynamic change the player's movement would have until after the jam, because i didnt really get to test anything since i was busy throwing in a lot of last minute mechanics and features that were necessary for the theme of the jam. All this just to realize that i made a mistake in the code and in order to truly see the potential, you have to reach level 5, and of course, in this build you were not able to. On behalf of my artist, he spent a great deal of time working on the player model for the ship and at least 5 different variations so that the player would have a new ship each time you scrolled up to a new level. On top of texturing and all of that other artsy stuff he created the phenomenal intro screen that you saw in the main menu and probably worked harder than everyone on the team to make the model look good along with the main menu . Sadly because the model was so small in-game, you arent able to see the details of his hard work.  And yea, the powerups and all that stuff were super last minute so i couldnt give them the best visual let alone any visual at all. I was desperately trying to make the deadline. Check out the updated version which  i believe is way better. Could use more tweaks of course, but i think this is how the game should have at least been polished up to this degree. https://gamejolt.com/games/starfighter/581320

i get it, having a job and get together with other people is difficult because everyone has their own things to do besides the jam, at least you managed to finish the game conquering all this challenges, that's a great way to learn how to adapt to the circumstances, and to  keep working no matter how, that 3d model of the ship (the one in the title) is awesome, i do  a little of 3d modeling and i can tell you that doing that is hard ( I can't do that ), the player model is small and certainly one cannot appreciate the little details, a low poly version would have worked better, anyway i will check the new build , thanks for not getting angry about the feedback, i was trying to point what could be improved, in your next jam you will do this a lot lot better because of the things you learned in this one.

Developer(+1)

No worries. In this industry, you have to have thick skin haha but thanks again. I will check out your game later today!

ahaha, it's true, maybe beacuse i'm used to criticize myself a lot when i'm making things , there are a rare occasions  in where im' satisfied with what i have done, but most of the time it's always a feeling that there is room for improvement in what I have done.

Developer(+1)

oh totally, im the same way. Ive tweaking little things about the game here and there and i have my friend playtest it and seeing them notice the improvement feels so awesome. What also feels great is that there are some things im noticing that needs more of a fix and it excites me because  the next time they playtest, theyll be like "Ah man this is way better". Btw its not letting me download your zip file. It just brings up the .rar which idk what that is

Submitted

in the  page i uploaded a .rar file , i leaved a link to a zip file that i uploaded to my medafire account, i  made the zip fiile with winRar i don't know if that has something to do (i believe not but anyway) here is the link , i just downloaded in another pc and is a .zip file, in the name says winrar zip file https://www.mediafire.com/file/u7vhek4e37p9fg2/BTP_GameJam_Hope_GameFolder.zip/f... maybe you download it and see the .rar icon?? idk

An intense shooter, for sure! The intro screen was very intense, definitely made me expect a lot of action. The game feels packed, intense, which is supported by very intense music (good job on that front!) There are a few different enemies, which adds to that sense of fullness.

There always is room for improvement though.
The level-up powerups are a bit bland - could use a lot more colour, impact and shiny-ness. The player ship movement is also a bit strange - it's jumping very quickly from place to place instead of moving smoothly. The intro screen also showed a very detailed 3D ship, which was kind of misleading, because the in-game graphics are very different. You would want better graphics in menus than in-game but this feels like too big of a difference in my opinion.

Developer

Thank you for your valuable feedback! Ill definitely take this into consideration within the next iterations!
Will totally check out your game in a bit.

I rly like it but it's a bit glitchy

Submitted

The musics really cool! And the gameplay is really cool. But I think it could use some more sound effects

Submitted(+1)

Great soundtrack though I think there should be more sound effects.

Submitted

That main menu screen is super dope. You should make a game from that perspective instead of the top down.

Developer

Thank you. Yea our artist have unbelievable talent. And that definitely is an idea worth considering. Thanks for your feedback!

Submitted

The game is a bit crude but have potential. I think making the player smaller and his bullets bigger would make the game feel better as it would make aiming and dodging easier (then you can increase difficulty by adding more ennemies if needed). Also, as previously said, sound and particle effects, even basic ones, have a huge impact on the "juice" of this kind of game and instantly make it feel better.

I made a similar game, if you want you can have a look at it (rating me back would be appreciated too!)

Developer

There were 5 enemy types but unfortunately i was at a loss of time and rushed the end so i completely forgot to color code them. Thanks for trying out my game though! Just left a comment on yours!

Adding some sound effects and particles when killing enemies would be better, also controls felt unresponsive as MONSTA games said.

But music and upgrade system was nice, keep it up!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback!

Submitted

I like how you waited the camera with mouse movement, felt like just the right amount. Would have loved some more "serotonin" in my feedback for when I kill things!

Developer

Thank you! My buddy worked really hard on it. I quite enjoy it myself

Cool game with simple gameplay. Some things that can be improved are the controls which are a bit unresponsive and the speed of the ship should be a bit bigger also.

Had problems with spotting the power-ups and also collecting them since the controls were a bit hard. But overall pretty good game, keep it up!

Developer

Thank you!

The game fits the theme and it have a nice music. The start menu is cool, but the gameplay needs to be improved. Movement is a bit jittery. Its hard to find the power ups because the color is the same as the enemies. Explanation of the power ups would be nice, i stick with LV2 power because i dont know what others do.

Developer

Thank you for your feedback! Will definitely take these things into consideration

Submitted

Like the music and the powerup mechanic fits the theme! My feedback for you is maybe make the movement and controls tighter as it would be a cool fast paced game

Developer

Thanks for you feedback Mark!

Hey! Great little game! My constructive feedback is:

Add more force against the player. I know it's space and there is no force to slow you down, but most games like this have that built in so it feels weird without it.

AI Seems to be a bit jittery.

Needs more sound effects!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! Really wanted to add cool sound fx and particle systems but sadly didnt have the time. Appreciate the words though! :D

Submitted

not sure how this fits in with the theme. but I like it. especially the music.

Developer

Thank you! So the idea is that the player is able to get upgrades for their space ship, but by choosing to upgrade, they are also forfeiting some of their health. There are five levels, so the more you upgrade, the stronger your weapons will become, but the less health you will have. You can juggle between levels, so if you choose to remain on Spaceship level 5, you will get the best weapon in the game, but also die in one shot, whereas if you remain on Spaceship level 1, you will die in 10 shots.
