This is really good work, it took a little getting used to but it was clear how to progress and it was fun to explore the dungeon. There were a lot of cool little things that added to the game too, like the minimap, the gradual camera slide back after you die. All adding up to a fun experience!

Developer

Nice! Thanks for playing :D

Fantastic presentation. Love the rounded screen effect, graphics, setting and level design. The snap movement on grid was a nice touch. Awsome job with that NES cover too btw.

I was a bit confused by combat at first, I thaught I was doing something wrong or not playing correctly when enmies would hit me after I attack and I couldnt do anything. Then I got a the shield and combat was more fun, and made more sense.

The only other thing is, I dont see the point in dying if nothing resets. There really was no conesequeses. All the cleared rooms just stayed empty, so there really was no threat or tension, when I died. I just went back to the room I was no problem .

Otherwise, masterclass stuff. This is one of the best of the jam and I hope you place highly.

Developer

For jam purposes we opted to keep the rooms from fully resetting (though I still have a to-do item to make enemies and vases respawn) The game takes some roguelike elements like enemies attacking you when they have more health than you are able to dish out which is why the shield is such a helpful item to have. Thanks for playing!

Awsome! Ill look forward to any updates you do. Yeah the sheild was great, made you stratagies more. This is still 5 stars a cross the board btw.

COOL GAME!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

Wow, what a cool game! Very polished, congratulations!

I just found it a bit too hard for me, but apart from that, it is an amazing entry :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Sorry that the game was more of the challenging side. There is strategy involve and often it might be best to flee or avoid enemies and come back when you feel you are in a better position to get them. Thank you for taking the time to play our game :D

Really incredible game, I loved it! The style is sick, and it's super fun! I defeated the Flesh! :D

Like a boss!

You made a game. It had challenges, progression - new mechanics were introduced over time, game play was very obvious, it required strategy, it was immersive; good use of sound and screen space, dialogue was light and at the perfect amount.

I had every item and still lost to the boss. I beat him the second time around at least. Think this will easily be in the top 10!

Developer(+2)

The boss does not want to give up his throne so he will do everything he can to stop you. ;)
Thank you for playing it all the way through and not giving up even after losing a few times.

Really well designed Dungeon crawler. So many small touches made the game feel complete. Having a minimap, and a rooms designed around unlocked gear made it great. Overall really fun, and great work.

Developer(+1)

Thank, thank you. :D

Very nice game, it looks really polished. I think it feels a bit unfair in the beginning before you get the shield cause you can't defeat certain enmies without taking damage how ever you try to strategize, since they take two hits. This leads to dying over and over, and if you go the "wrong" way first like me it and get the shield almost last it feels a bit frustrating to have to retrace every step you took over and over. But apart from that I really liked the different abilities and how they are used. Well done.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and for your feedback. I can see you know that there is not real "wrong way" as you can make your own way but there will always be a more optimal way to go once you find your style and get the knowledge on how the items works. The interesting is that there is technically, at least not currently, any real reason to kill an enemy therefore fleeing or avoiding them is still a very valid strategy but I personally to like to sweep the rooms clean and kill everything :P :D lol. Thank you :)

I defeated the flesh!

This is my current top pick of the jam with more than 20 games played. I loved so much about it. A full Zelda experience in a quick jam experience! Even though I died about a dozen times, it was never tedious to jump back in and the dungeon design was so well done I could get to where I was or a new path easily enough. Really well thought out design. I appreciate it. The art and overall aesthetic are fantastic.

If they gave out an award for best game thumbnail in the jam, this would have to take the top prize. It fits in perfectly with the NES black box collection. It's what made me want to play, but the writing and simple yet challenging mechanics kept me hooked.

I wish I had some constructive feedback, but this was a blast throughout. Maybe a boost to the boss, or a new mechanic to mix it up and keep the player on his toes. By the time I faced the boss I was powered up enough to roll through him.

Great work. Loved it.

Developer(+2)

Wow! That is so nice of you to say and I am so grateful you enjoyed it so much even though you had to restart many times. Glad it never got too repetitive or tedious for you. Yay! We love it when someone gets the NES reference in the thumbnail which I thought was both a funny throwback and a silly little easter egg.  Yeah...the boss can be a mix of hard or push over but we like that is all based on how well you've understood the mechanics of the game and how well you strategize. :D

Thank you for playing!

i really liked the game! and the pit mechanic especially because it was fun thinking how to align them in front and then walk over the pit to kill them

Developer(+2)

Yeah! That's one of my favorite mechanic too :D Thanks for playing

Such a cool game! I'm a huge fan of Enter the Gungeon, so this type of gameplay is totally my jam. I had a blast unlocking all the cool abilities and showing them off against the final boss who kept adapting to my moves. It felt especially good when you were able to trap a skeleton in a pit. That always left me feeling like a heroic mastermind. If there was one tweak I'd make it would be showing which enemies had more than one health.  If I  knew that I would have been able to create a strategy from the get go instead of resorting to trial and error, which ended up being pretty frustrating. Overall though, a fantastic entry. Great job!

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

I get the frustration and I did contemplate for a long time whether to include some sort of enemy health UI but ultimately went with the "Roguelike" route where you must decide whether to take the risk or not. However, I think that maybe the Belt could also reveal this information so that you can better strategize, Thanks for playing!   btw I like that you found the benefit of using pits to your advantage.

Submitted(+1)

by the way I feel embarrassed, I said Enter the Gungeon before and I meant crypt of the necrodancer.

Developer(+1)

i think I knew what I meant in the back of my mind 😉

Submitted(+1)

I liked it, only pushing away from the walls is sometimes annoying. A good product :)

Developer(+1)

Not sure of "only pushing away from the walls" but I'm guessing is probably related to accidentally bumping into the walls which I do quite often because I am moving to fast! lol :P

Submitted(+2)

Just finished up a stream playing a few games from the jam, and there's only one think I'm taking away from this game here... I'm clearly very awful at it, because it took me much longer to complete it than I'd like to admit! Incredibly well done and well made, really enjoyed getting frustrated at moving the wrong way here and there and dying because of it... Well done! :)

Developer

Awe sorry it took so long to get a feel for it but thank you for persisting on it! We tried to never make it feel like "you went the wrong way" because the dungeon can be explore which ever way you want it is just that some areas might be easier if you had some additional knowledge about the world revealed to you as you get some of the items. :D

Submitted(+2)

I really liked the game and the boss fight actually took some strategy to beat. Good job!

Developer

Nice! Thanks for playing it all the way through the ending :D

Submitted(+2)

Movement took a second to get a hold of as it felt a bit rigid, apart from that it was really nice to play, simple and fast to get a hold of initally and then it slowly scaled up from there without additional information needed. The retro visual and audio style go really well together for this as well. Nice going! :P

Developer(+1)

Think of the movement like moving a chess piece on a chess board and maybe that makes it make more sense ;) lol
Thanks for playing :)

Exactly that!
