Stuff you didn't do during the jam
The only thing I didn't do was the sound effects and melodies, which I obtained from royalty-free sources.

extremely charming.  sounds like you ran into the classic problem of Combinatorial Explosion which i guess i should've predicted when i picked fusion as the theme lol.  turned into a cool little toy though!

Developer

If by "Combinational Explosion" you mean the large amount of different parts for the slimes, that wasn't bad at all. On the contrary, if I were to add more parts, or a new Slime Level, drawing the new parts would be quite easy. It does take a bit of time, of course, but it's not difficult at all.

Now that the Jam is over I'm hoping to take this little interactive toy and turn it into a much better version of itself. Let's see what happens!

And, hey, thanks for hosting the Jam! It was super fun! (super stressing, too, but fun nonetheless)

very entertaining and surprisingly more...exciting than I expected. I'm obsessed with the slimy sounds and they're sooooo cute and I love the mechanics of fruit and genitals and making things really over the top or mixing a bunch of stuff together. also the scientist is epic

Developer

Thank you! The slime sounds have been a hit-or-miss thorough the reviews; some people love them, some other hate them. I've already added a "Toggle Slime Sounds" option to be done in the post-Jam update.

And Professor Lyme sends her thanks! ;-)

I don't know how you did this, but the game has exactly the right balance of "I understand what these variables will do" and "I wonder what will happen if I mix these together!" to make it feel like I'm an actual mad scientist growing slimes in a lab. Will this one avocado trait manage to express itself even when mixed with these fifteen banana traits? We must test it, immediately! Had a huge grin on my face the entire time playing. Awesome goofy fun!

Developer

So glad you liked it! Yes, part of the core concept was to make sure that every "Perk" had a proper evolution depending on the elements of the original slimes. In theory it's much easier to do, although in practice it required a bit of work in the art department (over 60 individual "Perks", to begin with). It's not as bad as it sounds, it just took a bit of time to draw and add each item into the game... ... ... which is also why I had to cut a few other game elements out. :-P But still, the end result is rather nifty, if perhaps also a bit lacking in core features.

This is really charming! I had a lot of fun mixing and matching those little critters, and the squelching sounds that they make are pleasantly slime-like.

Submitted(+1)

Awesome fun to see the different combos and try to min max the parts of the slimes you want to see more of. Pretty intuitive while having satisfying results from combining the different fruit slimes.

Submitted(+1)

Love the goofy energy, I assume this would be expanded into a sort of assembly line type game? Perfect prototype for that sort of thing.
I need to figure out a good way to separate sprites into parts so I can combine attributes like this

Would appreciate some toggles for sound, I'm the type of person who likes to play stuff on very low volume.

Developer

Thanks! And yes, this is the framework for something a bit bigger (which was supposed to be the actual aim for the Jam, but I didn't have enough time to finish the proper game).

I will definitely work on adding toggles for the sound. Several people have commented on that. Thanks for the critique!

Submitted(+1)

Partial to a lot of the transformations myself, very glad there is one for lips and vagina as they're often overlooked  ♥

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the critique! And yes, I wanted to add as many "Perks" as possible. I may add one or two more in the post-Jam version, so stay tuned for that. ;-)

I wish there was a category for silly because you’d be getting the full 6 stars. Genuinely charming, and as someone who experienced VioletDraggy’s nonsense back in SJ8, once again, I am very glad I don’t have misophonia lol.

I've heard that one of the best ways to create a game that's fun is to make a "toy" rather than a game - something open-ended that encourages play and exploration. And that's exactly what this is, and it is pretty fun. It didn't really click for me at first, because I was mostly just combining all the different colors together, but once I figured out I could combine slimes of the same color - and paid more attention to the differences between the types of slimes - I started creating my own goals and playing around a bit more.

Submitted(+1)

Also, I wish the combo colors were more appealing - You clearly put a lot of effort and thought into the art, and having all the combo slimes be a similar mucky brown color is realistic, but it's visually not very interesting and having them be the same color as each other makes me care less about discovering new ones.

Developer

I completely understand. The way the colors work is that the fruits give the Level 0 slimes a strict color scheme, and then the Fuser takes the color values of both slimes involved, and combines them.

One of the things I had to cut out from the game was a ReColorer, which was specifically to change the hue of any slime. That is definitely going to be added in a future, more complex version of the game.

Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Very cute! I can definitely see how, given more time, you would have used this as a base to springboard off of for more puzzle-like elements. As it stands it’s fun to see what combinations cause what changes! Definitely agree that it would have been nice to have a drag-on-top option, and the goopy sound effects were a little too much for me personally. What’s there feels great though, and super intuitive to interact with!

Developer(+1)

A couple people have complaied about the slime sounds. I understand they can be a bit too much for some. I am definitely gonna need to add a "Toggle Slime Sounds" option for a future update. I'll make a note of that.

Thanks for playing!

Super cute! you're a good cartoonist, really charming.

Submitted(+1)

Really cute and pretty game. The gameplay is a bit basic, but the squash and stretch of the animation makes up for it with the goofy sounds

Submitted(+2)

fun game! kinda wish you could just drag the slimes onto each other to merge them rather than having to put both in the machine but thats a minor complaint

Submitted(+1)

Great work. I enjoyed the mechanics and learning by experimenting. The slime audio could do with some tuning, and perhaps a broader library of possible sounds.

Submitted(+1)

I love how everything the player does gets its own splat sound and an emotive response from Professor Shirley! Gameplay is pretty intuitive. It may be fun to restrict the player's options in some way, either by adding goals to work towards or obstacles that prevent you from just mixing things in any way you want. The art style is cute, the music is fitting, and there's a big variety of slime bodies to discover!

Developer(+2)

Thank you! The sad truth is that the game was meant to have a more complex gameplay system in which Professor Lyme had to fuse specific slimes to satisfy the requests of clients. This would have brought cash rewards that she could use for her experiments, since, originally, creating new slimes and also fusing them costed money. These mechanics had to be cut out to make the game ready before the Jam's deadline.

However, I am planning on working on the game, post-Jam, to add all those features one by one, so there's still more of Professor Lyme to be seen!

Thanks for trying my little experiment!

Submitted(+1)

I like that the slimes all had a genetic factor. I didn't read the description of the game and just noticed two slimes were every so slightly different from each other despite being at the same stage.

Developer

Probably the hairstyle. At Level 3 each slime gets a random hairstyle, and, after you fuse two slimes with hairstyle, it's a 50-50 between both for the hairstyle of the fusion.

Or maybe you refer to the perks system. Feeding a fruit to a Level 0 slime grants it a specific Perk (a body part). If you fuse two slimes with the same Perk, the Perk level of the fused slime adds up both values.

Submitted(+1)

I'm always a fan of merge 2/3 games so this was already kind of a win for me. I like that the character designs are very cartoonish and cute, it just adds a lot of color to the idea, like it puts it in a tone that's just fun.

I liked this one!

Submitted(+1)

I need to ask.
Did you really made the 3125 convinations possible?
If so you are a mad lad and have my respect.
You still have my respect because all I did was contemplated so you did a lot.
Kudos!

Developer(+2)

If you mean every possible combination of Perks, that was actually quite easy to do: it's just a main "base" slime body that is decorated with specific parts. The really difficult thing was to make the whole grid system work flawlessly, mainly because I overcomplicated it from the beginning and THEN I wasted nearly four days trying to solve a couple of incredibly stupid coding mistakes.

Thanks for the kind comments!

Relatable...

Submitted(+1)

A very strong base for a more complex game, the art is delicious and the mechanic efficient and intriguing.

Submitted(+1)

The fusion element is really well done, and I love the protagonist's design! While it is satisfying to fuse slimes, it would have been nice to have some form of challenge/strategy involved. Also, I did find the SFX to be a bit too "squelchy" for my personal taste. But overall, I did enjoy the game. It was cool seeing just how many different sprites there are for the slimes.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! The sad truth is that the game was originally much more complex, but most of it had to be cut out to make it in time for the Jam.

However, I am planning on keeping working on this project post-Jam, adding all those extra mechanics and stuff, little by little. You have yet to see much more of Professor Shirley Lyme!
