Now that the jam is over and the results are in, we wanted to thank everyone for playing, rating, and giving feedback on DRILL BILL. This was our first jam, so getting ranked #42 for Theme/Limitation, #45 for Fun/Design, #88 for Music/Sound, and #91 overall feels amazing! We both had a blast working on the game, so we'll definitely be entering more jams and working on new projects in the future. Look out for more GAME JOY!
We also plan on updating DRILL BILL in the near future. Nothing crazy, just some minor fixes and additions we think the game could benefit from. Expect improvements to the web version and more control options.
Congrats to everyone that participated in the jam! Hope you're all as proud of your games as we are of ours.
Hahaha. The Edge Lord! Well done. This was a fun puzzle platformer with an engaging final boss battle. I'm glad I saw your tweet with some gameplay, because it made me want to try this out. I wasn't sure I'd have found it otherwise. The thumbnail doesn't really do it justice. I think if you replaced it with a gif of the same small bit of gameplay you shared on Twitter, more people would be interested in checking it out.
I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 minutes with the game. And although the boss wrecked me about six times in a row, I was always happy to jump back in.
For such minimal art style and animation, all of the movement felt really fluid and your collisions were on point. The bounce back felt just right and the dash was fun to do.
A few thoughts on alterations:
- Swap the orange color drill. Doesn't have to be metallic looking, but I couldn't stop seeing a spinning carrot. I like that it's a pop of color, orange in a cone shape is just too close to a carrot.
- In the boss fight, there was no real reason to dash, because you can spam the projectile attack as fast as you can press the button when you're close to him. Maybe put a cooldown on it? That forces you to use both attacks.
- I was going to say you could use the same particle effects you used for the dropping lava balls to put on the gravel throw and cannonball blasts to give them more life, but I realized that might just be the sprite animation itself. Either way, a few more sprites, or have the object randomly spitting out similar colored chunks in its wake and it would help sell the weight of those attacks more. Even if you just had it coded so the gravel chunk got thrown out at a random x and y scale.
I gave this one of my top ratings in the fun category. Each little room was a great experience. I only wish there was more to explore. It seemed like right when you were beginning to give more complex puzzles to solve, it was time to take down the Edge Lord ... again. Great boss name!
Good work, you two. I really enjoyed it.
I enjoyed the gameplay, it started off easy but then the boss was super hard. I couldn’t managed to push him off, but overall it was a good experience.
This really fun game... Thanks for add the timer...
Great game! the controls seemed a bit outdated at first but when you get used to it they are pretty good! The games was very easy but the boss fight was hard, would be better if you put some enemy's that you have to throw like in the boss fight, so the player knows what to do and is a bit more ready. Other than that, is a very good game for a jam! congratulations!
WOW ! This is a game I really really enjoyed playing ! The level design was really great and the boss battle was fantastic ! Also really loved the soundtrack and soundeffects:D
Any chance you two participate in future jams ?
Thanks for playing and giving your feedback. We both had a blast working on this, so we'll definitely be participating in future jams!
May our paths cross eachother again in the near future ! :D
The levels are not very challenging but the boss battle was great. Great game.
Really fun game! I love the two versions of the attack with the drill! Great work! :D
Pretty good game! I enjoyed the puzzle aspect to it and the use of your drill on objects and the boss! I was thinking i could drill through some stuff but no worries, i enjoyed it anyways! thanks for the good time
This was a fun game! Other than that I don't see any problem.
Really dug this one alot. Loved the boss battle and having to push him off of the edge was a brilliant way of implementing the theme.
Very well done. I like how the dash was used for both platforming and hitting things. The platforming was okay, but the boss is so much better. Different attacks and it looked like he got harder as he got closer to the edge? It just works so well.
I'm upset there was no actual drilling in Drill Bill :)
Great game! That boss fight was some of the most enjoyable ones I've been able to play. It was challenging but not frustrating. I love how the abilities work and how the limitations or drawbacks tied to each activity are in the control of the player (e.g. if they dash they can get hit). The integration of the theme was also spot on for me since it made the requirement of boss and on the edge tied together as the central point of the game. Amazing work you guys!
Great job! Congrats on completing and submitting a game! I thought the mechanics were well thought out, and that the puzzle on the third level was really interesting, I would have loved to see more puzzle design! That said, the boss fight is very well put together and shows y'all put a lot of time into it. The boss was tough, and became a bit frustrating until I started to use both the "shoot" and "dash" mechanics together. I thought it was awesome that y'all were able to get multiple boss stages, and three unique attacks implemented!
A very good game concept.
Good musics.
Graphics would rather to be something like SNES, Atari or 8-bit, or more stylish. Boss is more harder than it looks like. I like to see more bosses while the game itself was very short; knocking the mean boss out off the ledge were really challenging, but actually is the real fun core of this game which is enjoyable. Frustrating feature is while the boss does all moves randomized; it should be at least pseudo-randomized with short patterns. Waiting for the new bosses - and maybe to see this, for an example, in an old but stylish arcade-coin game machines.
Thx for the nice game experience though; beaten in 09:12 sec
