Did you work in a team?
Technically I've worked alone; But I actually got a log of good advice from the discord and twitter community. Also a few friend for playtesting. It was great !

Was the resolution a challenge?
It's a city builder; the biggest challenge was being able to convey information without having TOO MUCH information on this tiny screen. I had to keep some designs simple just because I could not feedback them clearly. But the constraints gave me nice ideas, as you can read in my devlogs

What did you learn?
I've learned Godot again haha !

But I also learned to talk and share with the community, write devlogs and tutorials to help everyone. This was a first for me.

Pretty fun and relaxing. Took a bit to understand everything but wasn't too bad. Art looks great and everything is distinct and recognizable. Cutting back the darkness and adjusting based off what gets revealed was fun. The game starts slow but can get pretty fast once you get a bunch of buildings running.

Thank you for your feedback Phil !

Chill town builder with a great idea of exploration!

Thank you Mango ! Did you manage to play in the end ?

Nice game. Seems like a nice cohesive package. I like the mood ambience going on through the game, music gives it a feeling of being relaxing but also of sadness.

I managed to reach the day 197, with different RNG I could probably make it until the end.

One thing I could understand is the hunt ability. It seems like it's an ability of the forests, but I was only able to use it once to get food from the forest. After that, the only thing I could do with forests was to chop them.

Developer

Thanks a lot for your feedback, and congratulation on making it so far !
You're right, you would win next time for sure.
Oh sorry for that, actually there is a small deer appearing from time to time on the forest. This means you can hunt ! But it seems that it's not visible enough, thanks for letting me know !

Very relaxing game with intuitive controls and great sound design. It took me a couple of retries but I made it past 200 days!

I think the part when the dark comes back was a bit too long and repetitive, all I had to do was a cycle of pray and rebuild a house/farm. The main challenge for me was to remember what tiles to rebuild during the last 20 days.

Other than that I had a lot of fun, I could see this being expanded with more objectives, buildings and types of terrain generation.

Thanks for your kind feedback.
And congratulations on beating the game ! It must have take some time so thank you for your investment.

Awesome strategy game, making art in 64x64 is hard but you certainly made some cool stuff, this game could be a fun mobile game

Developer

Thank you very much !

I played it on my Steam Deck till the end plus a bit more on a new game, I enjoyed the opening text screens very much and the wind rustling in almost complete darkness as you start sets a great mood but I really had a tough time initially parsing and understanding what the hud elements meant and how to progress forwards. Once I got the gist of the game and its resource management down I enjoyed my stay in your game quite a lot.

All things considered it’s a really beautiful game graphically speaking and the audio as well as music are really atmospheric and match up with the gameplay exquisitely. However the gameplay itself felt a bit unintuitive for me personally and is perhaps limited by the nature of the jam. A short explanation of resources and such on the itch page might help a bit.

Developer

Oh I would love to try the game on steam deck !
Thank you for your nice feedback.

Awesome little resource management game! I really enjoyed trying to outpace the encroaching darkness. It really adds urgency to the decisions you have to make in a way I enjoyed! Great game!

Thanks for your nice feedback !

This is amazing ^^ I drew the map down and played it a second time to try remove all the darkness before 200 days, I had a million churches but I couldn't do it ToT This game reminds me of Stop The Darkness, but in reverse, so this could have been like a sequel to it I guess :) really good game!

Developer(+1)

Thank you ! wow I would have loved to see how much darkness you removed. Great job on beating the game twice !

Amazing! I've said that about a few but I haven't played any of them as long as I have this one. The ending was painful. Great job!

Developer

Thank you !

An interesting idea and implementation, I'm just stuck in this game. It's especially cool to find combinations of buildings and develop faster through them. The darkness perfectly gives a limitation that forces you to plan better.

Developer

Thanks for your nice feedback !

That's awesome. Very sweet gameplay, nice music and mood. Played with great pleasure.

Developer

Thank you ! I'm happy you liked it.

Really cool city builder! I guess it's kind of the point but I found it a bit dark, haha, rather eye-strainy. Otherwise everything is very clean and clear and the curve is learn as you go which I like a lot. And the context sfx were a neat touch.

Good job!

Developer

Thanks Jack, I'm happy you like it !

Absolutely gorgeous! I didn't play for all too long, but from what I've gathered there's a lot you've managed to pack into this jam!

The game did feel quiet slow for me at points, I was just waiting for resources to generate. But everything else, from the sounds to the music to the art, were so so good!

Great work!

Thank you very much !

Amazing little game Darenn!

The light system is great, though it is sometimes hard to distinguish between a normal dark tile and a tile that was reclaimed by the dark.

I really appreciated your sound design, the music is great and the fact that you hear different sounds depending on the tile you are highlighting is great attention to detail! 😁

I build so many churches! But alas, I lost at day ~190 😅

Developer(+1)

Thanks Sander !
Yeah day 190 seems to be the day of defeat for most people. Might have a balancing problem here.
Only two people won so far.

Thanks for playing !

Submitted(+1)

Just amazing 5/5. I loved every second of the game. Even though I lost on day 190... sad. Now I am starting again. This game taught me that I need god. Amazing work! btw, how did you do the animation for the screen before you click "Run Game" ?

Developer

Thank you very much !
When you edit the page visuals you can add an image as background for the webplayer (if you did not check the "Start automatically" in page settings). I just put a gif in there !

Game was awesome. My favorite so far. The mood is perfect and I'm a sucker for these kind of games. How did you implement the fog of war?

Developer

Thanks ! Happy you like it !
It's a simple particle system ! Pixels going in random directions, with a short lifetime and a color gradient over their lifetime.

Submitted(+1)

Honestly a really pleasant game. Receiving the initial goal at the start piques curiosity really well. Some of the buildings are a bit obscure but by the end of the game I knew how everything worked through experimentation. There's lots of wiggle room, but it gets really tense near the end.

Developer

Thank you very much for your detailed feedback !
Yes balancing you could a little work !

Submitted(+1)

Loved the exploration and building aspect of the game. Really relaxing music and sound effects, congrats for the game, you really nailed it!

Thank you very much !
