How does your game fit the theme?
Bounce Again is inspired by some board games like Monopoly or Aeroplane Chess, while the movements in those games are decided by the Roll of the Dice instead of the player’s will. They are usually tile-based, and different tiles have different functions (some are good and some are bad). I try to apply this random and uncontrollable system to a 2D Platformer, which brings me this game.

The random floor is a nice solution to bring randomness to a 2d platformer. I'm also a fan of the health system. I just wish there was a bit more feedback with particles and sound that you really know: YOu got hit! You know?

Developer

Yes the feedback is too little for now. For example, there's only one SFX, which will be played when brouncing happens. In the future I will add more feedback to the game.

Thank you for your suggestions!!

Very good mechanism based on rules that change randomly but that is less frustrating than other games with the same concept as the rule change linked torebounding on colored tiles is an good way for the player to understand what easily what will happens next. The controls were a little confusing at the begining but when I understood that the ball was loosing its horizontal momentum after each rebound it was fun to play. The difficulty is challenging but may hard level happens a little too soon. May be making the ball less sensitive (going to the left/right more slowly) could smooth the diccifulty.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Due to my poor programming skills the ball will lose its horizontal momentum for now. In the future I will make some adjustments to make the gameplay better and build more smooth levels.

Thank you for the suggestions!!

The heal / damage mechanic was cool! My guess is that the relation to the theme was the random nature of the floor changing?

Developer

Yes! The relationship is the "random nature of the floor changing". Usually when people roll a die they would randomly get a number from 1 to 6. In my game the tiles have 6 colors with different functions. They switch between the 6 colors randomly just like "Roll of the Dice".

Thank you for playing my game!!

This is a nice take on the flappy bird genre. I struggled to connect it to the theme, and I found the controls a little challenging at times. I liked the neon visuals

Developer

About the connection to theme, I consider "Roll of the Dice" a representation of randomness, while the physical form of dice itself doesn’t need to be appeared.

Pretty fun overall, and liked the presentation. One issue I had is that since the ground tiles don't have a consistent order they switch between, it's often impossible to know what the tile below you is going to change to the first time you see it, which can result in damage that feels unfair. Maybe some sort of signal for what the next color a tile is about to switch to would be good. Aside from that, this doesn't really use dice at all in any way that I can tell.

Developer

Thank you for playing my game!!

I totally understand the unfair feeling, which happens a lot during my play testing. I will absolutely add some signals in the future.

Really like the gameart and really good Idea too. Also could you please check my game out if you dont mind?

Developer

Already done. Thank you for playing my game!!

The controls felt a little floaty, so I didn't always feel fully in control of where I would land. Also, it might be nice to make it more apparent when the floor is going to switch colors so the player can prepare for it. Still, the idea is really creative and intriguing, and a little bit of work could make this super addicting!

I will make improvements in the future. Thank you for the suggestions!!

A creative and fun reaction type of game, the chosen colors and the UI really helps a lot in making the game mechanics clear to the player. It's a bit frustrating as I wouldn't know what block I would get next, but I believe that that is part of the fun.

Congrats on finishing the jam !

Thank you for playing my game and the congrats!!

The game is full of juice! I really liked the glow effect. It was a fun take on the theme too. Very well done :)

Developer

Thank you!!

Ayyy this is such an epic game!

Love the gameplay loop!

Tho i suggest adding some indication when the floors changes (background flash or maybe a dice sound!)

Still! pretty solid submission!

Developer

I will add some indication in the future. Thank you for playing my game!!

This is a really fun idea - where your abilities depend on what you jump on! I wish I could have seen what all the colors you have in the photos mean, but it is crazy hard and I couldn't get past the third level! But with some minor adjustments to the movement and adding some warning to the block changes, you've got yourself a mighty fine game!

Developer

Yes It is hard due to pure randomness and zero warning. I will definitely make some changes in the future.

Here are the rest of the abilities:

The blue block gives the ability to double jump.

The purple block gives the ability to dash.

Thank you for playing my game!!

Nice music and good simple visuals. A little too random for my tastes.

Developer

Yes it is too random. I will definitely make some adjustments in the future.

Unique take on. Great Job!

I like this concept! I do feel like the randomness can sometimes lead to unfair deaths, but it definitely fits the theme and also makes the game more chaotic.

Developer

Totally agree! After the Game Jam I will  add some forewarning mechanics to make the game more mature.

Thank you for playing my game!!

Really clever interpretation of the theme! I think this would work really well with some sort of rhythm aspect tied to how the blocks change, similar to a lot of those levels from recent 3D Mario games. That, plus tightening up the controls a bit would make this something I could totally see myself grinding out levels on riding the subway or something!

Also, one minor design critique is that there's no disincentive to keep bouncing on green zones to max out your health, but I can't think of a good solution to that problem, and given the time constraint there probably wouldn't have been a chance to implement one anyways.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

When the idea of this game came to my mind, I had a one second thought that to make it rhythm based. However, I gave it up immediately because I had a lack of experience on both playing or making music games. Maybe one day I will have the ability to do that.

About the green zone, in the future I can switch it to yellow (yellow zone is like the default one) after the player touch it once. For now, it is OK because the mechanics and levels are not mature, so the green zone can help balance the difficulty. (I even use it frequently just to pass my own levels hahaha)

These suggestions are quite valuable. Thank you very much!!

Fun game! But I would suggest some sort of forewarning to show when and to what the tiles will change to. Just so the player doesn't feel too blind to what's going on. Good job on your game!

Developer(+1)

I've thought about a few ways to add forewarning too. However, due to the time constraints none of them has been implemented yet qwq. Thank you for the suggestion!!

Great concept !

Developer

Thank you!!

This is definitely one of my favorites so far! The art is nice, the music choice was great, and the despite how unfair the RNG got at times, it was a nice challenge. I stayed around long enough to finish the game!

Developer (1 edit)

Sometimes even I have to try many times to complete a level. Thank you very much for finishing the game!!
