nice game and good pixel art.

I really love the art, the gameplay is also interesting. I just love the art its so good :D

Developer

Aww, thank you so much! :D

Hilarious concept, definitely rage inducing trying to jump through and keep the flail alive. Music and pixel art is exceptional. Really well done.

Developer

Yeah it ended up a little on the mean side (tho I did spend a good few hours tuning the levels down to a more manageable state so it could have been worse).

Thanks so much! The music was thrown together in the last hour so I'm glad it came out alright :P

Really fun concept, gorgeous art, and I literally laughed out loud at the little animation of the word cursed sliding up when you pick up the flail. Excellent job!

Developer

Haha glad you enjoyed it!

love it

I really liked the vibe of the game! It was really hard, but still designed well. I really how you're tethered to the ball too, and how it drags you into holes with it. I also agree that the long room could have used a checkpoint or just be split. Otherwise, the mechanic was super creative and the game looked great!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much!
Yeah the long room is definitely tricky, and that was after I spend a couple hours just playing and refining it during development.  So it could have been worse :P

Very creative gimmick that's done well. I really like the addition of the jump button, it helps out a ton and it introduces another way to dodge the flail and the bullets. I also like that you have to use the flail to hit the switches and break the walls, so positioning is important. The graphics and presentation looks great too.

The game could definitely use some checkpoint in some rooms, particularly the big room before the enemies are introduced. I also don't think the flail should pull you down into the abyss - since you don't have full control of the flail it's pretty easy for it to go just a little too far then fall down. It's how I died the most. Plus, trying to dodge the flail and the enemy bullets is already quite challenging enough.

Overall, great game and great mechanic. I managed to get to the boss fight but couldn't beat it, but I had fun with the game.

Thanks for playing!
I definitely agree the wide pit room could use a checkpoint and some difficulty tuning, but I have to disagree on getting rid of being pulled into pits entirely. Part of the whole core idea of the game is to work around the flail's launching distance. It's always consistent (exactly far enough to slightly overshoot you at full extension), and I deliberately made it so that the flail stops at a wall on a direct hit so that you can control it. Keeping it from falling into pits would significantly reduce the challenge of the planning/routing aspect of the game. I could see maybe including an easy mode where it levitates all of the time, however.

Good job on the game, great idea with the weapon / enemy kind of system. Really nice approach and well done!

Developer

Thank you! :D

Well done Henry! Great mechanic and everything is presented so cleanly. I love how you telegraph the flails movements. Nice work

Developer

Heck yeah, thank you so much!

thought this was a really unique mechanic i havent seen yet, overall really solid, good job :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah I'm surprised how few people even toyed with the idea of being connected to an enemy; I've only seen like 2 others and they handled it pretty differently.

Unique game, always fun to see pico8 games as well :)
More games should try out top down platforming, it is always fun!

It would be cool to have a "flutter jump" by holding down the jump button, my reflexes of dodging stuff is not what it used to be :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! I've had the GBC Zelda titles on the brain a bit lately so maybe that's part of where I got the platforming from :P

A flutter jump might be a decent consideration, though it may also break the level design with the extra distance it gives (unless it drastically slows your movement while doing it). Alternately, it could be an addition to an easier game mode.

Incredible! I really enjoyed the visuals ( especially that death effect ), catch music, and concept of this game.  The flails design was cute, too bad it caused me tremendous stress when dodging hahah

Really enjoyed this game forcing you into difficult positions and not letting you just go about things slowly and carefully

You did a really good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much!
Yeah it's amazing how much life you can give something like the flail with just a simple eye. Also the music was literally thrown together in the last hour of the jam so I'm glad folks still like it :P

Loved the mechanics in play here. The visuals and audio were great. I especially loved how you had to be mindful of whether the flail would fall into a hole. I felt that the switches could have been a little better since they would sometimes go off even if the flail was just a little too close and was moving away from them. Either way though, nothing really wrong with this. Was really fun

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah the tech for flipping switches is a little finicky right now (it's technically just an extension of the block breaking detection logic so the range is a bit larger than necessary).

I love the art style and effects. It looks super satisfying. Flails are always fun in games :)

Developer

Thanks! Yeah as impractical of a weapon as they might be in reality they're definitely a fun visual and concept (tho I suppose this one doesn't really move like you normally see) :P

Submitted(+1)

super cool, really like this one! unfortunately the death noise is now stuck in my head.

Developer

Haha well at least there's technically 2 of them :P

Thank you!

This feels like a really well-realized game, I actually really like the level design and mechanics in play!

Developer(+1)

Thanks so much! Yeah this was an interesting one to design levels for since it was very much a case of just feeling out what interesting things you can do with the mechanic I made.

Flails are cool and I really like the cute artstyle.

Quite fun :) For improvement, I would prefer to have a classic life system and to keep the ships linked till the end, instead of destroying the ship.

Developer

Wait was this intended for my game? I don't have any ships :P
