How does your game fit the theme?
In our game, you play as a controller (a DPad, to be specific). It's bullet hell/rogue like, in which the location you take damage impacts which controls are available to you. Lose all four cardinal directions, and you're out of luck. (Look for those A and B button power ups, though. You can use them with LMB and RMB.) Additionally, the enemies you fight fit the theme of "controllers", especially the boss at the end!

The game was really fun to play. Sometimes it was maybe too hard, especially when there was too many enemies, there was no possibility to dodge them and on top of that you lost some of your controls.

Developer

yeah, we definitely struggled with balancing out the difficulty. it's something we're gonna work on going forward. thanks for playing!

Really fun game, you really went overboard on the theme "out of control" which I loved! Dodging enemy attacks was fun and there was enough enemy types to keep the game interesting for quite a while. The added layer of strategy when you lost the buttons to your controller felt like a core part of the game rather than just an after thought and it was fun seeing what you could do with your limited options. Overall the game was really enjoyable and there's honestly not much I can fault you on, maybe the player sprite could have been improved a bit as it wasn't quite as high quality as the enemies but that's really all I can think of. Overall, it was an amazing game and I hope you keep developing it some more, great job!

Developer

thanks so much for playing! glad you liked the game :D

Hey that was pretty fun! You didnt just fit the theme to fit the theme, that really served gameplay and felt pretty fun. I loved the art, especially for the joystick boss, and giving the player the ability to wrap around the screen is a nice way to not make the game completely unplayable when you're almost out of keys. There was some real juice going on here, maybe the music could have fit that a bit better. The UI could have used a little work, but it's understandable that you were short on time. Nice submission!

Developer

glad you enjoyed the boss, we spent a ton of time on it! and yeah, the music was all stuff I had previously composed not related to this game specifically, so i understand that. and for sure the UI, we're definitely gonna make everything clearer as we continue on this. thanks so much for playing and the feedback!

A nice concept, with an interesting (pun?) twist in the theme! The art was very well, and virtually bugless. Well done!

Developer

thanks a bunch! glad you enjoyed it :)

The concept is really good and fit perfectly the theme (at least the puns way). The execution of it is well thought out with the border of the screen being like pacman. Only thing was that it wasn't clear that you could collect A and B button as power ups. Only grasp on my third try.

The presentation is the weak point, but it's doing it job. Music fit and sfx are at the right place. Didn't encounter any bug. Overall, a nice game that fit the theme like a charm :)

Developer

i totally agree. in the future we're gonna add a tutorial of some kind because a number of people were initially confused by the various game mechanics. thanks a bunch for playing and for the feedback!

Quite like the visual style, solid presentation, and a good core mechanic, the wrapping screen helps a lot to alieviate issues that many "lose  input as you go" games have struggled with this jam. The only things I'd mainly say are one, the powerups spawn far too infrequently, and two, I feel like there need's to be something more going on, the pace feels to slow to be a survival-styled bullet hell, and yet other than the powerups the player has no meaningfull interaction with the enemies who just sort of wander about themselves. Perhaps a mechanic to lure enemies into damaging each other, would add some risk/reward gameplay to it while keeping the slower more strategic pace. Overall, quite a solid entry and there's definitely a lot of places you could take this project!

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing! i completely agree with the powerup critique, that's probably the most common one we've heard and is definitely something we'll be fixing. i also think you have a good point with the pacing, we have a lot more ideas for enemies and new powerups to spice things up that we just didn't get to in the jam. thanks so much for your feedback! glad you enjoyed :)

The core mechanics is great! And the theme about lack of control used well!

Developer

thank you for playing! glad you liked :)

This game does so many things right! The core mechanic is extremely creative and enjoyable, the game-play is fantastic, and the art is amazing! There's some small tweaks that could be made to make the game more enjoyable (like some way to regenerate your lost "parts") but overall it is a fantastic experience.

Developer

for healing, there should have been drops spawning every ~15 seconds, some looking like little gray bars outlined in white, others looking like red/blue circles outlined in white. those were healing items to give you directions/buttons back. not sure we made it clear anywhere those were to help the player though, lol. anyway, thanks for playing and the comment!

Overall enjoyable, but as several others have pointed out, there is a slippery slope where the game gets far more difficult to play as you lose directional inputs. I never got to try the power-ups because of how infrequently they spawned, which was a shame. Cute sprites and nice presentation overall, well done!

Developer

thanks for playing! we're working on making the game more forgiving by spawning more powerups/healing items, and having the drop rate be a function of the player's health. glad you enjoyed :)

I like the playable character and the whole look of the game and how it plays - it's still got a little bit of the 'lose a move and you're done' syndrome, but not too much due to the wrapping screen, which's great. It's a really fun one, love the little potion dudes.

Developer

thanks so much! glad you enjoyed playing!

You put so many small details into this! I love how the health/lifetime of enemies is conveyed through their red innards and you telegraph attacks amazingly. Incredibly polished and great visuals! My one complaint is once you get down to only having 2 directions you get kinda screwed but other than that this game was amazing!!!

Developer

thanks so much! yeah, we're working on making powerup spawns more helpful to save the player from getting stuck. currently, the powerups spawn in-line with the player to help them if they can only move in one direction, they will always be a key you need, are more likely to be a key instead of a button the less keys you have, and will always be a key for an axis you don't have (so if you can only move left to right, it will give you up or down key), but we'll also probably make it so they spawn more frequently the less keys you have (and in general).

Very pretty visuals! Awesome job!

This was a lot of fun, love the idea of losing controls when getting hit. Makes you be a lot more careful!

Developer

thank you for playing/streaming, i appreciate it! glad you liked the game :)

The idea was really nice, but really tricky to balance/develop . Anyway, nice job!

Developer

thanks so much!

Feels great to play and has a clean presentation! I wonder if there's ways to make taking damage less limiting though. Losing an entire direction is quite a blow. Maybe 8 directions? Would like to see this idea more fleshed out.

Also we had similar ideas! In mine you always have two options for each action though.

Overall great work!

Developer

thanks so much! and yeah, managing difficulty was a bit challenging. we didn't mention this anywhere, but the screen does wrap around (so you don't get stuck once you've lost a key).

Submitted(+1)

LOL. Our games ideas are similar. I don't have a PC though. Would like to play on Mac!

Developer

haha yeah, one of the guys from my team sent me a vid of yours. very cool! we'll do a mac/linux/web gl uploads once the jam ends, i just forgot to in the rush to get everything finished.
