The game I wished I made!

Submitted

Wow, what a game! Very impressive what you did in this jam: Beautiful graphics, amazing sound, challenging and innovative game mechanics and very cool level design.

The only thing I would improve are the controls. I would have prefered [UP ARROW] for jumping and for example [SPACE] for the mirror effect. I think this is a bit more intuitive (or maybe just personal taste). However, when you design a game with [Z] as a control, always keep in mind that there are some QWERTZ keyboards out there :). It was possible to play but added an additional level of complexity for me :D.

Developer

Thanks, I never accounted for so many people with a QWERTZ keyboard to play my game :D
If/when I decide to make a full game, I'll make sure to include customizable controls.

For me it's a rare thing in a jam to play the whole game through! Good job, like it 😎

Amazing Game! Good Job!

Wow super fun and polished game. Played through all the levels and didn't encounter any bugs. Fun art styles and lines of dialogue too.

Submitted

Finally finish all 10 levels. Really like the dynamic and the color scheme. Hardly find any bugs while playing. Good works!

Submitted

I forgot to ask this. What game engine do you use?

Developer

Construct 3, been using it for years. It's quite flexible when you know what you're doing.

Submitted

But most of the time I don’t know what I’m doing 😂

Developer(+1)

I'll be completely honest, my first few years in Construct I find to be a waste, because I didn't learn the fundamentals. I did everything in the worst way possible: no structure, didn't use layers properly, ignored most features.

What helped me a lot is looking closely at tutorials and breaking down what and how they're doing. For example, Viridino Studios are putting out a lot of great game templates, I learned tons from them.

Well, I have dilemma with using proprietary software. Mostly it’s hard for me to track down the current bugs they have and I can’t inspect how they implement some features. It’s quite crucial for me to know how the rendering engine works and the limitation of their physics engine.

Submitted

Wow! A really polished one with great mechanics and smooth controls and animations ;)

Submitted

Well Done! This is a great puzzle game! The dialogue is fun and the art is really nice. Although the puzzles are pretty easy, they are fun nonetheless.

Great Game! Had fun.

amazing game design, I'm in love with the bright colors! I had a lot of fun playing it, the levels were challenging and creative. Really like it :)

Love your game. It is professional.  I'm a professional programmer and I'm also a one-man studio. If you have any plan to make something bigger, free free to let me know.

Submitted

This looks really slick, is easy to pick up. I suspect how you finish a level is not how was intended, but the mechanics work really well. Like this one.

There is so much to like about this game. The puzzles and mirror mechanic were really smart and well implemented. It was not to hard or too easy for a game jam and I felt you went for quality over quantity. The graphics were great - Mr. Flips was cute and well animated (I like how he "bounces" when he lands). The cutscenes and dialog were great and functioned well to introduce the core game ideas. The visual contrast between the normal and mirror dimension were well done too. The music and SFX were cool and I loved the low-pass filter that gets added when you're in the mirror dimension.

Very well done :)

That's some sweet pixel art

great art and music, I liked how the music changes, good job

Submitted

Normally, I don’t play platformer, but this one lured me in! I like, that the music did not stop even if I fall into the clouds. Nice work!

Submitted

Great game! Love the concept, nice art style, and a good difficulty progression.

One detail I loved was the change in the music when you enter and exit the mirror world. Very nice little immersive touch.

Developer

You're right, applying this sound filter for the first time felt like finding the final piece of the puzzle. I spent half an hour just jumping back and forth between dimensions :D

Submitted

Yeah, I don't think I would have consciously noticed it if I hadn't just implemented something similar for a slow motion effect - but it makes such a big difference. I'd love to know how you achieved the sound technically. How did you filter it? In engine or did you preprocess it?

Developer(+1)

The type of filter itself is one of many that are included in the gamedev software that I use (Construct 3). Once the condition if fulfilled, the filter is applied.

My friend  -- he's an amateur musician and wrote the music for this game -- told me that what I'm looking for is called a low-pass filter, and also gave me a few pointers on how to configure the parameters (frequency, detune, etc.). I fiddled about with it until I got a satisfactory result.

Submitted

Wow Good game , entertertaining and funny , good game

Submitted

I like the game. Don't really like jump on Z but the mechanics are nice! And also I like  the music! It fits tight in!

Developer

Thank your playing! My friend did the music, he'll be happy to hear you liked it.

What would your suggestion be for the jump button? I though using Z and X was pretty standard for platformers.

Submitted

Idk I used to SPACE, W or Arrow Up.

Submitted

I agree. Using a QWERTZ keyboad made reaching for X, Z and the arrow keys quite a challenge.

Submitted

The concept is implemented VERY well in this game with challenging and interesting puzzles to solve and the graphics are also great. I would rate this a 4 - 4.5/5!
