In what way does your game fit the theme?
Tiny Kingdom is a cute tower defense game of currently 3 levels. It was created within 1 week for the Brackeys Jam 2020.2. It offers a rewind button to send back the enemy hordes for some seconds, in time, then they move forward again to reach the exit gate. In the beginning we thought, come on, how hard can it be to build a tower defense game... uhm 1 week later... we thank whoever brought us to this final version in time. It was insane... but fun.

What is special compared with other tower defense games? You can rewind time to send back enemies for some seconds in time, the isometric tiny room style is unique, you can grab a tower from the playfield and place it somewhere else and we included evil rainbow unicorns!! Take that...

So what is this game all about... Definition of a tower defense game, taken from Wikipedia

Tower defense or TD is a subgenre of strategy video games where the goal is to defend a player's territories or possessions by obstructing the enemy attackers, usually achieved by placing defensive structures on or along their path of attack. This typically means building a variety of different structures that serve to automatically block, impede, attack or destroy enemies. Tower defense is seen as a subgenre of real-time strategy video games, due to its real-time origins, though many modern tower defense games include aspects of turn-based strategy. Strategic choice and positioning of defensive elements is an essential strategy of the genre.

Thank you Wikipedia.

So, how to play this game... the only tool you need is your mouse and some strategy. When inside a level you will get some coins for free to build your first defense system or tower, you can choose from the cheap archers tower, or the canon tower who shoots mines on the playfield, which of course are detonating with enemies near by, to the magicians or ice tower who can slow down enemies. Find out which tower is most effective against the enemies.

With your left mouse button you grab a tower from the right sidebar, in case you have got enough coins available, you get more coins by removing enemies from the playfield, no they are not killed, they are now in a safe place... for sure. Move your mouse cursor over the playfield and release the tower by releasing your left mouse button, if you found the right spot, the tower will snap into an available spot. To place this tower somewhere else, just click and grab it again and move it somewhere else. If you like to remove the tower from the playfield, click, grab and move it over the trashcan in the lower left corner of the screen, by the way, you get some coins back, how great it that...

To call in the next wave, in the right lower corner click on the play button, when one wave entered the playfield you can call in the next wave. But we sure and prepared that your defense system is build up perfectly.

If you built up a good defense system, you can fast forward a wave by clicking on the fast forward button. Wait, what for is the rewind button over there... as the topic of the Brackeys Jam 2020.2 is REVERSE, send back the enemies where they came from, but you only can do that three times per level.

The game is over when you lost your life, how sad is that by the way... do not let that happen! Enjoy the game and look out for more soon. Good luck!

Did you write most of the code yourself and made all the assets from scratch?
Yes, all code is written by our team, also all graphical content and music was also composed by us.

Played your game in this video here at 01:15:35. Didn't get my audio settings quite right so my feedback is a bit, quiet, but hopefully it's still helpful feedback.

Developer

Thank you very much for checking out Tiny Kingdom in your let's play-video, the how to play page was included into the game instead of a short tutorial, because lack of time, I wish we could had more time to make the game for the jam as in our vision, so much was not included also the SFX, with the next update those strugles are gone, would be great if you could have a look again in one of the next updated versions, but also wonderful to see how people are reacting and taking there time to understand and play the game, that's precious info to us too. Thanks!

Nice game, like how the art and music sets the mood

Developer

Thank you very much for your positive feedback, more to come with the next update :-)

Submitted(+1)

Really nice game, love the cute "boxy" art style and the music is really well suited to contribute to the ambience of the game. If you guys continue to develop the game it would be nice to have a grid overlay, to be easier to identify where you can put towers. Also the tower info seems a little bit misguidind: i started with 75g and the first tower had two numbers indicating 50 and 25, i was not able to identify which one was the price and when i purchased it spend 45g.

Other than that is a pretty nice game, keep it up!!

Developer

Hi, thank you for your feedback, yes, we will include a shadow or at least an indicator where you can see if a tower can be placed there when you release the mouse button. The green number left to a tower icon is the purchase price and the right, red price is the money you get back when you grab a tower from the playfield and sell it over the trashcan in the lower left corner. The tutorial and better UI will improve that in the next version. Already working on it :-)

Submitted(+1)

Really solid entry! I loved the art you made and music was nice addition to the game theme. The only thing I miss the most were the sound effects of towers shooting, nonetheless I really enjoyed playing.

Developer(+1)

Yes, thank you for your positive feedback, we produced over 60 sound effects but were not able to include them into the jam version, really sorry about that, but they will come in the next update :-)

Submitted(+1)

The game seems really pretty and fun to play but I couldn't pass the main menu because the play button didn't appeared like in the first screenshot.

Developer

Hi, oh that is curious, first time I hear of it, is it Windows 10 you are using? Would be cool if you could send a screenshot to me please, as this should not happen. Thank you very much.

Submitted(+1)

Just normal windows 10 version and as you can see there is no play button.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much, we will look into it and try to fix it in the next update version. Our programmer already is looking into it. As we will not use 3D buttons as UI in the next version, but 2D this should no longer be an issue at your side.

Developer (1 edit)

By the way, which screen resolution do you use? We developed the game in 1920x1080px.

Submitted(+1)

My monitor resolution is 1680x1050 (16:10 aspect ratio). This could be the problem as it isn't a common resolution.

Developer(+1)

We found the problem, it is the scale of the 3D objects, it is a setting which is missing on every canvas object in the scenes. If you run Windows at the resolution of 1920x1080px the display problem should not exist, until the next version of the game. In principle that is missing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95q79j0lNYA

Submitted(+1)

Ouch, that is a nasty bug to find lol. I will try your game on my notebook after work. There I have 1080p resolution.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much, yeah, what a dilemma, we will use 2D sprites on the canvas in the next version, else we must program a responsive solution to fit all screens, but we are not fully happy with the 3D objects to use as UI, 2D will look better.

Submitted(+1)

This is incredibly cute and I love it. Some more towers, enemies, and levels would make this a worthy indie game! Great work! I'd appreciate if you could check out my game and rate it too :)

Developer

Yeah, thank you for your positive feedback, 8 additional creatures already are created, 60 SFX finished, 7 more level designs finished plus 3 more towers, but time was too short to include everything in the the jam version, but we are on it :-) also more atmosphere will come to the levels, intro, outro and everything what makes a game playable over and over again. Please follow me for news, thank you.

Submitted(+1)

Very beautiful graphics! I love games in this style, very well produced. Congratulations!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much, I'am proud about my small team member Blaise who created those nice characters, towers and levels, we keep on producing more content with the next update. Thank you for playing Tiny Kingdom.

Submitted(+1)

Graphics were great, and screen transitions were smooth. I couldn't stop playing the level and enjoyed it.  I was curious though as how it fit into the theme but still was fun.

Developer

Thank you for playing the first version of Tiny Kingdom, our small team is working on way more content currently. I hope you will check it out when released.

Submitted(+1)

Oh yeah there was feedback I forgot about. The hand's shadow, really throws off where you're placing the item. The item is placed at the hand but the shadow makes it seem like you're floating above the town. So thought maybe the item falls and lands on the shadow spot. That really messes with the brain. I suggest taking the shadow of the hand off.

Developer

Yeah, thank you for your feedback, our programmer thought it looks cool, but yeah, we will remove it from the next version.

Submitted(+1)

Well if you kept the shadow, then a cool effect would be where you let go, is where the item drops from the sky and lands where the shadow was.  So I learn that it's the shadow is where it will get placed, but then make it the shadow of the item. OR no shadow. Just an idea.

Developer

Yes, already talked to our programmer about a tiny shadow over the tile were a tower can get placed (or the shadow of the tower itself, right), good suggestion, thank you.

Really liked the isometric graphics! Were the models created with Magica voxel? A more clearer tutorial instead of a block of text in the help section would have been nice, but otherwise it was a fun  tower defense game!

Developer

Yes, the models were created with Magica Voxel, ported to Blender and then animated in Unity. Intro, Outro, more levels, enemies, defense system, most of it were finished also the SFX, but time was too short to include everything. A tutorial will be part of the game in the next version. Already working on it with my team, glad you like the game. Stay tuned for coming updates :-)

Submitted(+1)

I like the artstyle. Gamedesign is also good. Nice game. Well done! :)

Developer

Thank you very much for your positive feedback!

Submitted(+1)

Graphics and overall feel are great! Missing sounds for shooting...

Developer

Yes, we prepared 60 SFX but time was too short to include them into that version, next update with full SFX. Thanks for your positive feedback!

Submitted(+1)

very nice characters. cool art satisfying building my tower defenses. very nice overall :D

Developer(+1)

Thank you for your positive feedback. Wait for more to come, already have so much already created but we were not able to put everything into the game within 7 days, haha... stay tuned.

Submitted(+1)

staying tuned!

Submitted(+1)

Lovely! I love the mood, and the character design is really really cute. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for your very nice comment and thanks also go to Blaise for her great job as talented level designer.

Submitted(+1)

Nice graphics and the controls work very well, a quite chill game

Developer

Thank you, yeah that is what we wanted to reach at least, great you liked playing the game.

Submitted(+1)

Really cute, beautiful graphics and music! :) I really liked the ability to rewind the hordes!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for your positive comment :-)

Submitted(+1)

Loved the Graphics and Music . Well polished .

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much for your compliments.

Submitted(+1)

Great graphics and music.. cool job for a week of work.

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much and thanks to Blaise for being so creative, she is in charge for the great level design, for the first version we were just able to create 3 out of 10 level designs she created, more to come real soon with the next update.

Submitted(+1)

It's a great game with great Voxel rendering and I love the audio, good job.

Developer

Thank you very much for your positve feedback, yes Mayra and Ste Fandy did a great job on the score, they produced way more songs plus 60 SFX, but 7 days was too less to build everything into the first version. More to come real soon, with the next update.

Submitted(+1)

Nice isometric styile its good side of game. Can you look at my game? It lasts about 15-20 minutes. Thank.

Developer

Done :-)

Submitted(+1)

The game was very well polished, and you took the theme and turned it into a unique game mechanic that I wouldn't have thought of. In terms of overall innovation, it's nothing radically new, so I gave you a  3/5 there. Awesome job, you guys did great!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, we see the current state as the beginning, already we created 7 more level designs, 12 enemies and 3 more towers, yes it is tower defense, but we also thought about how we could bring a new style to the genre. A lot of ideas spinng around in our heads, so we can bring tower defense to the next level. Promised. One week is too short for a complete tower defense game with so many variations, it is great you liked the current state. Thank you again.
