I spent 2 hours addressing the most prominent problems and tweaks that were suggested below. I have left the original files submitted at the original deadline for transparency as well.

CHANGELOG:

  • You can now see plugs through the hedges
  • Added ambient sound effects + music (most of this was already done I just missed the original deadline)
  • Reduced number of keys required for party skip cheat
  • Fixed shadows being invisible
  • Added !!! warning when plugs disconnect
  • Clarified instructions at the start to say "Plug all the lights in"
  • Made it more obvious to click the bottle at the party
  • Made this version downloadable in hopes of preventing the black screen crash
  • Increased range of being able to pick items up

EDIT: I've just noticed that the tables are going underneath the hedges, that will need fixing.

Submitted

An absolutely great concept and lovely visuals!
Unfortunately at one point I got a black screen and the game seemed to have crashed. Not sure if that was the game causing it or my computer. I decided to not start over since I'd have to start the wiring from zero but I might play again later.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm glad to hear that you liked the visuals. I'm sad to hear about the crashes and loss of progress. If you wanted to skip to the party, there's a cheat to do that in the game's description (if you wanted the full experience!).

Do you have any suggestions?

Submitted

Yes, the visuals are adorable! I tried playing again but kept running into a black screen unfortunately. Also, I couldn't get the cheat to work for some reason (I held down the buttons simultaneously).
I think what could work better, next to the browser-based version, is an executable download. Since I'm thinking it could perhaps be related to this entry being run in the browser?

Developer

Unfortunately many people have reported this black screen but I am unable to reproduce it my end. Perhaps it is to do with it running in browser, that's a good point! At least an executable file would provide a more useful error message that would help me track down the error much more clearly. I'll look into that! That's a very good idea.

Strange that the buttons didn't work for you, there has been 1 other report of this too. Maybe it's a keyboard thing? That it only supports say 4 simultaneous keys? If you were to try it on a different keyboard it may work?

Thanks for the suggestion of also providing a downloadable, I'll get on that!

Submitted

I noticed there's a downloadable version now and tried to play it. That one runs very smoothly!
All in all it's an absolutely adorable setting that you managed to create. I really like the piano playing in the background.
In the end I got most of the lamps connected to the generator but I must've done something wrong since I couldn't connect all of them.
Highly enjoyable game, though!

Developer (3 edits)

Thanks for playing again! Glad you liked the piano, I was concerned it was a little too sad to fit! Interesting that it runs better for you as an exe than it does in browser. What spec of computer do you have?

I changed the cheatcode so it should work now if you wanted to try skipping to the party! (See description).

Sweet and gr8, loveable idea!
Some brain activity at last and not motoric skills - that was my purpose too, so check out my entry, if interested.

Very cool rope physics!  My favorite after about 30 entries

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yes, less about hand eye coordination and more about your brain for puzzle solving!Glad to hear you liked the rope physics. Do you have any suggestions?

Difficult to find and grab the connectors when behind the bush.  -> silouette or x-ray their contour when pointer is near.

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Wow, I love the concise way in which you presented your feedback - straight to the point and with a range of possible solutions to counter it! Would you be interested in testing future versions / products? Your feedback is very much appreciated.

I completely agree, it has been the most made complaint that reaching plugs behind bushes is too difficult. When a new version is released, this will be the first thing that I fix!

Thanx for the offer. Well, I sit too many hours behind monitors, and just struggling to become a full-time indie, so a quick tester (who sees only the greater opportunities and threats) or brain storming partner perhaps I could be. :-).   As bunnies and bushes and their party is so compelling, and so is future... :-))
Btw, I am also on GMC forum, u 2?

Developer (1 edit)

I am on GMC forum too, also as PelicanPolice.

Submitted(+1)

This was a cute game. When I got to the party, I didn't know what to do to get the zoom out. When I roll the mouse wheel it just scrolls the HTML page. I wandered around the whole party and nothing happened. Still, it was enjoyable hooking up all the lights. Good job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I'm glad to hear you had fun!

The party was more of a "reward" for completing the puzzle, and less about gameplay. But clicking the bottle on the table in the center of the party will give the zoom out. You can skip to the party by using the cheat in the game page description if you wanted to try it out!

Do you have any other feedback?

Submitted

No other feedback other than that I agree that your cute character could have used a little tune while he was working, but you accomplished a lot as is. Great work!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks! A tune while he was working... That reminds me, it's possible to imagine that the bunnies are whistling constantly, and that the black spot is not his nose but in fact his mouth. It's quite hard to unsee actually

Submitted

An interesting idea. Beautiful graphics, it's a pity without music.

  • I tried to go through a couple of times, the error crashes:

  • It is difficult to get an object when hiding behind a hedge.
  • Found an invisible wall to the right, which can be bypassed from above.
  • "Party" cheat code didn't work.

Good luck in development =)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, and the concise feedback! I'm glad to hear you liked the graphics!

I completely agree that music should have been added but I ran out of time. I am aware that there are crashes as I've had numerous reports, but I am unable to reproduce them my end, and that error message is obfuscated so even I have no idea what any of it means, but thanks for sharing it!

I think the strongest complaint has been to do with not being able to see things when they're blocked by a hedge, it was next on the todo list to fix this.

An invisible wall? Do you mean this

And when you say the party cheat code doesn't work, what did you try? Did you press all the keys together or one after the other?

Submitted

Invisible Wall: It looks like this is what I found.

Cheat code: when you press R, the level reloads, so it makes no sense to press in turn (although I tried), and tried to press everything at the same time.

Developer(+1)

Perhaps your keyboard only supports up to 4 keys pressed at once? I've seen that before very occasionally.

Yeah, R should only restart the game if you're not holding the other keys!

Strange! Thanks for letting me know anyway, next time I'll make the cheat use less keys!

Submitted

Impressive! Nice graphics, presentation, ending and the rope simulation is fun to play with though the clickables may sometimes feel small and hard to handle.

Great job!

Developer(+1)

Hey! Thanks for playing, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the ending! The rope simulation was so tough to set up (see here!), so I'm happy to hear that the end result was fun for you.

What do you mean by the clickables feel small and hard to handle? Is it to do with the collision only working when you're right next to them? I agree that this is not optimal but the reason it's like this is because when I had collision enabled from further away, the velocity at which the item you picked up would accelerate towards you to appear instant was too great and I didn't have time to deal with this. In a more polished version of the game without time constraint, this is definitely something I would ensure was in place.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Submitted

The hitzones are small and sometimes my character gets in front and I can't pick them up. Since you can't pick them up from afar, maybe using a button press to pick them up would feel more intuitive? (Closest pickable object could be highlighted when close enough)

Developer(+1)

I agree button controls would be good but it gets a little more complicated when you're near a plug bank with multiple plugs. It's quite hard to guess what the player intends to do upon pressing the action button

1. Pick up entire plug bank

2. Disconnect plug 1

3. Disconnect plug 2

4. Pick up nearby plug (?)

So that's why I went with mouse controls in the end!

Submitted

Makes sense! You went a long way for this jam, congrats!

Developer

Thanks again for the feedback!

Submitted

This is the most unique idea I have seen so far! The visuals are very cute! Love the paper animation effect! I'm surprise the wires managed to hold so far. That's some amazing physics engine right there! I just wish there was some nice music while I was plugging the lights. I like the ending. Took me a while to realize the maze spells out the GMS logo

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for playing! I'm flattered to hear that you found the idea to be the most unique! That means a lot. The paper animation turned out surprisingly well, it definitely looks its part.

I agree that it is definitely missing music, I would have added some but I ran out of time. Next time! When you say it took you a while to realise the maze makes the GM logo, do you mean you figured it out while you were playing? Or were you looking at it zoomed out wondering what it was?

Also do you have any suggestions?

Submitted (1 edit)

I only figured it out once I zoomed out. I thought to myself, there has to be something important here.

For the suggestions, the glitch with the hedge shadows don't show up. I tried refreshing the page but no luck.

Speaking of hedges, I'm sure many have said this before how the hedge blocks the plugs. There was a time I lost the plug so I had to restart the game. If you can maybe make the hedge slightly transparent when the rabbit is behind it, make the white highlight go over everything else, and add a pick up and drop sound so the player will have an easier time knowing when they picked up the plug.

That's all I have to say. Hope that helps!

Developer (1 edit)

What do you mean by the glitch with the hedge shadows doesn't show up? Is that not the glitch?

Yes, I agree that the hedges were a little too blocking as many people did indeed lose things behind them. It was next on the todo list!

It does help, thank you!

Submitted

An absolutely outstanding entry in the jam! Very polished even though the controls were quite finicky but nothing that would detract to much from the overall experience. A bigger problem for me would be that - and its hard to describe - I had the feeling of there being an even better game hidden in there if the idea was just fully explored because the actual level I was playing felt quite random ? Does anyone understand what I'm saying? Anyway, great entry! Congratz!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Which aspects of the controls did you find finicky?

Interesting that you found the level to be random. Actually quite a lot of effort went into making the maze as "long" as possible without seeming "pointless" if that makes any sense? I tried to design it in a way that wasn't a bore to navigate while also not being too quick as well. Also I'm unsure if you discovered it but the shape of the maze makes a GM2 logo (check the screenshots!).

What do you mean by a bigger game? Perhaps a game that wasn't just a puzzle game but more of a narrative game focused more on the party goers? Perhaps a mystery game, figuring out a murder before it happens or something?

Would you say you had any suggestions?

Submitted

the sockets would sometimes hide behind the hedge and sometimes even though I felt I was hovering over the correct object it wouldn't react and sometimes it would be hard simply because two important objects are so close together, but like I said: nothing too bad.

And about the other part: I really didn't mean that it's bad level design in any way, just that it made me feel a certain way. I think the reason behind it is the following: to me, this game looked like a puzzle game. thus I had certain expectations. one of them would be that upon solving a puzzle with the main mechanic I would realize a new way in which said mechanic could be used. Having one of those Eureka moments that define the best of puzzle games. In this game, this moment never came, but it always felt like the mechanic should be able to create such a moment.

I didn't think this through from a design perspective, that's just how I felt as best as I can describe. I hope that helps : )

Developer (2 edits)

Thanks for clarifying, that does make a lot of sense, I think if I understand correctly, a puzzle game usually builds on its design elements but here it was just 1 puzzle so you miss out on the satisfaction?

Sockets being unreachable through hedges has been the number 1 request made to fix, so I'll definitely get on that.  It was next on the todo list and I regret not implementing it beforehand deeply!

Your feedback has been really useful to me, I would love to continue receiving your feedback.

Submitted

Sure, thanks for the invitation!

Submitted

This game has an interesting problem. To have enough gameplay, you made the entire game in just one big puzzle, which also makes sense narratively, but unfortunately takes away some of the fun, at least for me. The perk of having more small puzzles is that you feel a sense of satisfaction after each one, while if you have just one, that feeling only comes at the end and may be hidden by annoyance from the player. There isn't a real sense of divided puzzles either, like that there's one big puzzle but you have to solve smaller ones to make solving the big one possible, if that makes sense. As a result, the player doesn't have much impact until the very end. Here's a good video on that.

Sometimes, objects didn't highlight when I hovered over them and I had to move to a different position, or they were under the hedges so I couldn't see them (try fading out the hedges where there's a plug or giving it a permanent outline), and it didn't help that the triple sockets sometimes just moved out of the way for no reason.

The art is cute and excellent and 5-star-worthy but everyone else probably already said that. Just a shame there's no music or background ambience, the sounds made it feel eerily quiet.

FYI I sound negative because I tend to only focus on constructive criticism because that's what really helps us grow. Besides, everyone else seems to be doing the job of praising you just fine.

Do I sound angry or stubborn? I don't mean to. Well done. This is a trainwreck.

Developer (2 edits)

Hi, thanks for playing! I completely agree that 1 giant puzzle doesn't allow for a paced experience with small dopamine hits along the way, but as you said, from the narrative's perspective, it made the most sense, and as you can probably guess, the game started its development from the narrative component.

I also am sad to hear you found issues with the collision system, I agree it didn't perform the best. It's most likely to do with the range. I had to cap the hover range because if you picked up an item from too far away, the velocity it would accelerate towards you caused some problems and I didn't have time to fix that so that was the next best thing. It seems it was at the cost of the user experience.

What do you mean by sockets moving away?

I agree that the hover should have shown through the hedges, it was next on the todo list (also one of the most requested features). I agree it's missing background ambiance and music, I actually made a build with way more sounds in but I missed the deadline by a few minutes!

Don't worry about sounding negative, all feedback is useful, I completely agree with what you've said. Do you have any other feedback? By the way this has been very useful to me, I'd love to receiving more feedback similar to this in the future.

Submitted

very fun and calm and has well graphics

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Glad to hear you enjoyed the graphics. Did you have any suggestions?

Submitted

Really cute!!!! I never knew plugging together power bars could be such a chill experience! Well done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you found the game to be relaxing, and not frustrating! Do you have any suggestions?

Submitted (1 edit)

The only suggestion I have is a small one. A few times I lost a plug behind the hedge and it was hard to pick up, but when that happened I just dragged the other side so I could grab it again so it wasn't much of a problem. You might be able to make it so when you are hovering your mouse over a cable it shows where it is behind the hedge kinda translucent like (or outlined). They say that with game development the criticisms are usually right, but the suggested solutions are almost always wrong. So you might be able to come up with a better idea than my suggestion xD The game is really good though, it's one of my favorites of the jam for sure!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks, that means a lot!

And yeah, your criticism is spot on, most people made that as their first complaint too. Your suggestions to fix are also both perfect, I cannot think of a better solution! It was next on the todo list.

Btw would you be interested in helping test future projects and builds?

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely, I'm always willing to help a fellow game dev. I just followed you on here and twitter :D

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you, that's amazing!

Submitted

Art is very impressive. I love the wavy paper and the first person view when the bunny is holding up the invitation. Immediately made me feel that this was a game I was going to enjoy. It was so full of character! Gameplay wise, I think I'd have preferred there to be less plugs. I wasn't sure if what I was doing was "right" or if I was just going about it the wrong way because there wasn't really positive feedback. I think maybe having you start out in a smaller room with a smaller plug puzzle for players to know what is "right" when it comes to the plug could have helped out before moving to the bigger area of the hedge maze. At that time, I just wasn't sure if I was meant to plug everything in in a specail order or if there was an end plug somewhere I had to find first. In any case, art was amazing, the physics implementation was pretty cool too! Made it feel pretty dynamic. And the neon light party was a lot of fun. Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for playing, I'm glad to hear that the first impression of the game took a good hold on you.

I agree that having there be one huge puzzle was not the greatest, but I only wanted there to be one party so I figured I'd rather have too much content than too little. I agree that there should have been more feedback. Perhaps it was too subtle (or you noticed but weren't sure) but the lights do turn on when you plug them in.

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed the party too.

Do you have any other feedback?

Submitted

What a great game, your game concept was my favorite in the jam by far, super creative. I can imagine a lot went in to the logic in this game. and it looked great. My only feedback is were the controls were a little finicky, and the game crashed (black screen) a couple of times for me but I was so keen to see what would happen in the end (I would love to see a gameplay video of its completion). Fantastic job!

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Thanks for playing! That means a lot! A lot of the effort went into getting the physics engine working correctly yeah! See here.

Which part of the controls did you find finicky?

I've been told that it crashes sometimes but I am unable to reproduce it, even doing exactly the same things. Very strange. By the way, you can skip to the party using a cheat (check game description) if you were unable to get to the end!

Do you have any other feedback?

Submitted

Just checked out the end with the cheat, that's great. Love the little details you added like the bunnies holding glow sticks, awesome work.

Main things is that when the power board and plug are near each other its tricky to click on the correct item, especially if they get hidden behind the hedges. I was also thinking that mapping these to buttons on the keyboard could help but saw your response in the other comment.

Others have also pointed out maybe background music for the main game would add to the atmosphere.

Overall its a great game and think its cool that you added extra powerboards and the cheat code so everybody that wanted to could enjoy the ending.

Developer(+1)

Oh you mean trying to pick up a plug bank when it's full of plugs? I knew this was going to be a problem but I spent so long getting the collision boxes to work I didn't have the energy to redo it with some extra space at the ends of it for you to pick it up with (I discovered it was a problem afterwards, of course).

I agree, background music / ambiance would have been wonderful, but I ran out of time! I had a version with ambient sound effects but I missed the deadline by a few minutes with it.

I read something somewhere that pointed out that if you want good votes, people have to have fun, and for them to have fun, they need to be able to play in a style that suits them. As it's not multiplayer or competitive, cheating doesn't matter, so I figured why not. I saw another game in a different jam had cheat codes, and I thought that would be a great way to allow players to customise their experience, and also serve as a restore system to anyone that lost progress from any bugs!

Also, if a player never makes it to the ending, they may wonder what the relation was to the theme and lose me points there too.

Submitted

Very unique game! I absolotely love your artstyle and the general idea. The gameplay was a bit frustrating to be honest when plugs disappeared behind the hedge and sometimes it was hard to click on stuff. But I made it to the party :)  Very creative entry, nice job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the artstyle and that you made it to the party! Your kind words mean a lot, so thanks for that too.

I agree that there needed to be better indication of plugs disappearing behind the hedges, the best solution I can think of would be to show the white hover glow through the hedge.

Other than that, do you have any feedback?

Submitted

Maybe add some different tasks to make the gameplay more interesting. I mean it's a cool idea but just connecting plugs for 10 minutes wasn't really fun for me :P

Developer

Fair enough! What kind of other tasks would you suggest?

Submitted

Cute! Can I confess that I tried the cheats after I couldn't get the 3rd plug where I wanted it to go? xD Also, I am playing the HTML version (I am using Chrome) and it often blacked out while I am in the middle of the game. So, sadly, even with the cheats (both the extra plugs and hold P A R T Y keys tgt) I couldn't complete and see the party. Also, really like the wobbly paper and the way the bunny hugs the plugs - hope he enjoyed the party! :)

Developer

Haha thanks for playing, I hope he had a good time too. I'm sad to hear it was so unstable for you that even the party struggled. Very strange how different everyone's experience of it has been regarding crashing.

Other than fixing the crashes, did you have any other feedback?

Submitted

Yes, it does seem strange how people experience the bugs differently huh :/. But I think you did a great job for this short amount of time! I've never played anything like it :)

Hmm... let's see.. if you would like to take this up a notch, with regards to the gameplay, I think that perhaps having like a progress bar or some kind of rewards for the player at regular intervals will help players stay engaged to carry on till the end? I understood the main objectives but perhaps some minor checkpoints or mini quests can add some variation before the player meets the main objective? My point is that because it is a maze and there seems to be unlimited ways to play it, it could be good to have some structure or guidance along the way :)

Oh, or even like, maybe after the 3rd plug then there is a cut scene and some unexpected blackout happens or like some thief came to steal some of the cables etc. as the rabbit is portrayed as a very cute and innocent lovable character, the player will feel that sense of "aww" and inclined to commit and help overcome the adversity and continue bunny's quest. This would be my take on using a story-telling approach :)

Looking forward to ver2.0 if you decide to continue working on it after the jam! :D

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks, and that's great to hear! I also had not played anything like it so I hoped it was original.

That's a good suggestion. It's funny you say that, I very nearly added a counter at the bottom that said "5/10 lights" but decided against it to minimise the GUI, and try to explain it using graphics, so instead it would show you by physically turning the light on (but only slightly because it is day after all).

Haha a thief? Perhaps a fox? I wonder why he would do that, maybe he is angry he was not invited to the party... That opens up many questions for a backstory of a supposedly "innocent and lovable" character. I agree that there's so much potential for additional narratives, and a spiteful gatecrasher sounds like quite an interesting one.

Submitted(+1)

Glad that my suggestions were helpful or at least gave you some possible ideas :) I haven't been active on discord, but have followed you on itch ;) Cheers!

It was fun to play, nice idea!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, I'm glad to hear you had fun. Do you have any suggestions?

I would add some music and audio fx and maybe some sort of achievements that make you feel you're progressing in the game, also more "stability" while we're plug in the wires because it gets a little bit frustrating when the sockets moved from their place but other than that I think you've got a great game right here, also I love bunnys so you're in my mind now haha. Congratulations!

Developer

For sure it definitely needs something more than just silence. What kind of achievements are you thinking?

And when you say there were issues with wire stability, what kind of issues were you experiencing?

I love bunnies too, you can't really go wrong. Would you be interested in testing future versions/projects?

Submitted (2 edits) (+1)

Very unique game concept! You should put a warning that it's dangerous to plug so many power strips together ;P  I had a problem where the plugs came unplugged randomly, had to go back and replug some in. I really liked the physics and animations though! :)

Oh, and a couple times when something was behind a hedge, I had trouble clicking it. I was just guessing and spamming click til it grabbed. haha

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Very true, but I think most people are either oblivious to the danger and do it anyway, or already know and avoid it! I think a genuine need for "don't try this at home" should never be necessary, but I guess this game acts in a way that implies there's nothing wrong with this and perhaps that's why there should be a warning?

As for things unplugging, perhaps this is what you were experiencing?

If a plug cannot reach the socket after 2 seconds of trying, it will unplug. But if it makes it, it will be permanently stuck, unable to come out.

I know this behaviour is not intuitive and it definitely needs changing, as you are not alone experiencing this problem. But it was just due to my lack of understanding how the physics engine worked!

Submitted

first off, I was totally kidding about the warning. I just thought it was funny. As for the plug coming unplugged, it seemed to happen even when the cable had slack, but to be honest I can’t say that with certainty at this point. Anyway, it was definitely a very unique and fun experience. :)

Developer(+1)

Oh I see! It is a valid concern though, wouldn't want an impressionable audience thinking it was a safe thing to do.

(+1)

Very good game idea and amazing art, congratulations!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I'm glad you liked the art, do you have any suggestions?

(+1)

Actually I have,

I believe the mouse control is getting in the way, maybe it would be better if the player approached a cable and pressed a button on the keyboard to pick it up, if there was more than one, there would be a switch between the assets and when the player would connect to a socket, the same switch would be shown through a button to know where the player would fit.

That's my suggestion :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the suggestion, I completely agree that keyboard controls for plugging stuff in could have made it much more streamlined. However I could not settle on an intuitive way to pick which socket to plug/unplug from, so I never prioritised it on the todo list.

I like the idea of using a button to toggle through all the options, but that would require a second button (one for toggle, and one for apply selected), and it was really important to me for it to be as simple as possible, and mouse was the most intuitive way to do that. That's the reason behind the decision for mouse over keyboard!
