How does your game match the theme?
The game begins with a spaceship crashing onto an unknown planet, as well as using lighting and the Gameboy's inherent screen limitations to create a claustrophobic and unknown "space"

Nicely done! Really captures the gameboy feel and the goal of finding your gameboy was a nice touch too. Definitely nailed the claustrophobic aspect you were going for and surprisingly it didn't make the platformer too difficult either, so you pulled it off well.

This was a lot of fun but I don't want to shoot the garlic guys.

I want to be friends with the garlic guys.

Developer(+1)

I thought the same thing! So I put a "pacifist" achievement at the end if you can beat it without killing any :

Really nice art and I was hooked by the name alone.

You created a interesting garlic world with some nice features, would be very interested to see this expanded!

Submitted(+1)

That was interesting. The art is very cute!

Is the jump supposed to have a moment of input lag? That seemed like a very strange decision.

The audio is a tad loud; the combination of shooting and the jetpack often surpassed +0.0 dB.

Good work!

Developer(+1)

I'm still working out how to make a jump with variable height that doesn't feel floaty, but just used my own method for now. I'm planning to fine-tune this for the next project.

And I'm totally new to audio concerns, so I'll take that into consideration!

Great-looking game, controls well, and I'm a sucker for the classic Game Boy palette.

No music for the Jam submission was unfortunate, it would have been nice to have some tunes. Good SFX though. There's definitely potential here!

Great graphics! Very nice game.

I like the lighting effect for the game really helps the atmosphere of being stranded on a planet. The little garlic dudes were cute felt bad about gunning them down. Also it cool that you got procedural generation working.

The game looks cool.  The controls seemed a little bit sluggish.  I think some subtle tweaks to things like acceleration and coyote timing would help.  Nicely done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks, this is the first I've heard of coyote timing, but that would add some polish. I've got a plan to smooth out jumping but... too lazy/tired at the end of this one lol

I enjoy the great atmosphere and the art style. The lives as spacemen was a nice creative artistic choice. Good work.

Cool little platformer! I like how you have the levels randomized like Spelunky, where it’s just chunks of level that are in a random order. However, this did make things feel a bit tedious once you’ve seen all the variations. I made it to the jetpack but I gave up after I went far to the left and got killed by the flying alien. It’s hard to tell just how far you need to walk, and it’s a little odd that it’s random every time since I’d think the planet would stay the same since when you die you use the next astronaut haha. Overall though good job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, I'm mostly working on my roguelike development skill and this taught me a lot! Spelunky is a big influence for me too

Well done, I enjoyed it. I died several times, and killed all garlics -although I love garlic- so no achievements for me! But it is a very nice feature to have. The lack of music didn't bother me this time, as it only added to the suspense.

I would like to have had movement to the left hand as the handheld.

Cool atmosphere and lighting. I like how the remaining lives are  the spacemen standing by the ship. I wonder if there are any garlic stars out there...

It looks cute and I like the "circle of light" effect, it's quite cosy! The gameplay is missing something, there's just not enough action to keep the player engaged.

Great game :) I like the aim for a metroidvania! Use of color grading has a great effect, I thought it may already be quite limiting with the 144x160 aspect so I was a little surprised when that was shrunk even smaller with the character. Overall good job!

The graphics are very attractive, making good use of the palette, and remind me of Super Mario Land 2. Somehow they give off a very cozy vibe. SFX are also good, although the absence of music is also a shame (alas, in jams we never have enough time to do everything... I didn't manage to create music for the gameplay segments either). The controls are smooth.

My critique would be that the gameplay seems to be lacking something. The enemies are very basic, and there doesn't seem to be much by way of puzzles. There are destructible blocks, but they don't leave behind collectibles.

Good game! I like the overall presentation, sprite work , and color palette.

I like the concept, and the title screen looks really nice (that onion planet looks delightful!), but the gameplay felt a bit lacking. It felt like I was just walking in a straight line, sometimes shooting a box or an onion, until I wondered if the stage was looping. And I went the wrong way at first, so I walked down this really long corridor with constantly repeating obstacles just to find a locked door! I didn't want to walk back so I just jumped in a pit, which teleported me back to the ship instead of killing me.

I don't know if that colored my perception, but walking back and forth multiple times - I think 6 or 7, as I managed to die partway - in complete silence just wasn't fun. There wasn't enough variation in the obstacles, and while there was some kind of boss at the end, I ran into it by mistake and then it just kind of left. Any time I hit a wall I'd jump into the nearest pit just so I wouldn't have to backtrack, so I never fought the boss at all.

I applaud you for having achievements people can strive for, that's a nice replayability feature for those who want it! I just wish the areas were either shorter or more varied.

Good game. I like the graphics. But It can too easy for the player to just spam shoot and kill every enemy without even seeing them.

Developer

Yes, I swapped out some solid blocks for breakable ones toward the end, and didn't consider this. If you beat the game, there's also a "pacifist" achievement if you want a bit more challenge though ;)

Submitted(+1)

I think the idea is cool! Out in space, i felt the darkness and maybe some exploration? I would suggest making a key other than shift to shoot (spamming makes sticky keys hate my ears,) and unspawn bullets off of the camera. You can run through the whole game without seeing an enemy by spamming (and repetitvely clicking the sticky keys dialogue on windows). I felt that minus the music left more to be desired in the immersion aspect

Developer(+1)

Oof, I didn't even think about sticky keys. I banished the pop-up permanently long ago lol

Submitted

oh, that's the real meta! I didn't know I could banish this monstrosity xD

The gameplay is soo smooth and gameboy like. It's a space mario rogelike game XD. Simple yet really fun, well done.

Developer

Thanks, I'd like to refine the roguelike platformer idea for a bigger project down the road!

Submitted

good idea, I think the smaller sprites makes everything so good to see, what are the size of the sprites 8x8px?

Developer

It's a 16x16 tileset, with the player and items being 12x14, so there's some wiggle room in gaps.
