I should mention I took this screenshot in mGBA, the colors may vary based on emulator/system

Good news buddy! We found an emulator for mobile that runs the game on the Play store:
GBCC by philj56
It's in early access, but its a very cool emulator!

probably going to add a poop tracker now lol

Thanks for the feedback fizzlymike!!
The menu cycles by pressing the SELECT button to rotate between items, rare items and map screens.  There is no tracking for the poos because its only that one scene where you can find them.

Thanks for letting us know, we'll see if there's a solution to running it on those emulators.  We were able to play it using Retroarch

here's an update for fans of the game:

physical release coming soon!

We put in some efforts to remake the game in color with a lot of extras. check it out! And feel free to post in the community forums https://monstrous-entertainment.itch.io/unknown-space-gameboy-color

This is our web version for pre-release testing. Please give it a try and let us know any feedback or critiques you may have.

And stay tuned for the physical release on cartridge, playable on Gameboy Color!

Thanks for checking it out! Good news, I've got some in space contents for the post jam version ;)

Thanks for playing! Thanks for the comments, I'm happy to announce there's a lot more dialogue in the post jam version coming soon!

This was short but super sweet. It brought me back to playing smash tv back in the day. I think you did a great job with the difficulty level and having a variety of items was a real treat. Chicken Buddy for the win!

Siege warfare in space, what's not to love? I especially enjoyed looking at the stars in the background, it has a nice parallax effect when moving. Nice job on the artwork too, it didn't have to look this good, and I'm glad it does!

Thank you for the review! That is so great to hear, I was aiming to recreate some of the same feeling from playing those old school rpg and adventure games.

Stay tuned for the post jam update, Its going to have some cool features and upgrades added to it ;)

This looks and plays really different from anything I've seen on unity before, nice work creating the game mechanics and style.

Nice work, its great to see a wario-like in the jam! it was fun ransacking the place.
Regarding the items remaining counter, did you try pinning it to the screen?

This is awesome, nice level design. You got the difficulty feeling pretty good and the controls were quite nice. Impressive work for a one man team!

Thanks for checking it out and for the kind review, we appreciate the feedback.

Good news, I'm working on fixing the cave lag in the post jam version!

This is one heck of a game jam entry, it's a little tough to get the hang of  at first, but its tricky in more of a good way. This game feels like a complete package, congrats!

Thanks for the kind words and detailed feedback!
You make a good point about the dialogue window, I will have to see if I can override that behavior in the post jam version.
The final level was intended to be difficult so the victory will be sweeter, but I'll definitely consider tuning it based on the reviews as well.

Cheers!

Good news! We've been discussing an upgraded GB version for after the jam and potentially a Godot remake ;)

This game is so promising, this has some of the nicest art in the jam. I'll be watching for updates!

Thanks for playing and thanks for the feedback!
You may have missed the target at the far left of the first cave screen. You are right an indicator would be a good call.  Town music is on the ticket for post jam updates!

Truly out of this world! The artwork and music in this one is downright inspirational. well done!

Nice level design, I can tell a lot of care went into crafting this.

Thanks for playing! We have discussed some future plans for the project. We are considering rebuilding it in Godot and expanding the world and gameplay mechanics.

hey thanks for the feedback! Yes our composers worked hard to deliver within the constraints of GBStudio's music maker for an authentic GB experience.  I think we had town music in mind at one point but it was out of scope by the end of the jam.

I do find the break in music can be a nice break between the action, to give the mind some breathing room but also I do think some laid back town music might hit the spot in those situations too, or some ambience even.

Thanks for playing, I'm so happy that people are enjoying this game, it justifies working like madmen for days on end lol

Cool game! The parallax effect here is great. The heat mechanic was a cool idea and color palette changer was a nice touch.

just finished this, LOVED the music. Great take on the theme too. after I got an F on the first house I managed to figure out how to deliver quality design work for the rest of the clients. This definitely felt like a gameboy game.

Thanks! It was a pretty crazy 10 days. Working with the GBStudio engine and using kanban boards helped a lot.

Nice work, this has a lot of satisfying gameplay elements. I'd love to play a larger version of this with more enemies and powerups. I'll be looking forward to post jam updates!

I wonder what kind of animal produces space milk?

ah snap, I was so excited to play this and ran into the same problem as others where the level doesn't load. This looks very promising and I will be looking forward to future builds!

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you like it! The character's projectile is actually a magic bolt spell inspired by D&D spells, which I probably should have mentioned somewhere lol

YUMMM corn on the cob!!!

Thanks for the kind words! The top down move speed is more or less coming from the default settings of the GBStudio engine. I would love to take a deeper dive into the  code some time and try what you have suggested, thanks!

I really dig the vibe of this game and the music slaps. The enlarged version was definitely easier to see, would definitely like to play more of this.

Nice job for a first jam, the gameplay is pretty good all things considered and having checkpoints was a good call that a lot of people miss. Great idea for the concept too, its quite different from the rest.

Loved the concept here, the characters are hilarious. Being able to customize your ship is a great feature. Nice job overall!
